Is the Active going to be identical internally? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi all, this is a question probably meant for the devs. Will the Galaxy SIV Active be able to use the same Roms and such? Or will it be developed for separately?

Most likely separately since there r differences camera and screen u can't use the same device trees if it gets its own sub forum

it is different internally; CANNOT BE ROOTED (yet). Screen and camera on hardware side, firmware and ROM are different as well.

What is firmware different? I understand camera programming is different, but what beyond that?

built in hardware (cam and screen) are different; the ROM they come with is different; it would have to be; the hardware is different.

Updated S Pen SDK to make the “old” Galaxy Note new

Alongside the introduction of Galaxy Note 2, Samsung has announced the availability of a new Software Development Kit for the S Pen. The S Pen SDK 2.2 should help developers bring several features found on the Galaxy Note 2 to other S Pen-touting devices, the original Note included. The updated SDK contains new UX scenario, context awareness, and expanded drawing tools.
Of note is the tool that allows apps to recognize the S Pen even when there’s no physical contact between the stylus and the screen. In other words, you can simply hover the pen over the device to trigger certain actions.
Available only for the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Note 10.1 is the ability the launch preset features when the S Pen is detached or when the earphone is attached. As for the expanded doodling tools, a new calligraphy brush has been added to the list of pen input, and there are new color filling features, 33 image effects, an improved UI, and more.
With Samsung doing its part by releasing the new S Pen SDK, the ball is now on the devs’ court to try and create some more advanced apps for the Note series.

It can be. The only thing that can't is when you take the spen out. Like auto launch memo as soon as it's taken out

It's not an app that you can install on your phones. It's for developers who create apps for the note..
Isn't the New s-pen slightly bigger? How should it fit into Note 1?

You can't fit the Note 2 hardware into the Note 1. It is software that controls the S pen that is to be coded using the new SDK.
oo. thx for the info

i mean an official jelly bean update as in this video -
Hi guys, I have a gs3 international version. Recently I've been flashing over to the leak version of jb stock ROMs over at the other forum under gs3.
There are about 4 stock ROMs all under the leak ver for sg3.
The initial Leak ROM which I've flashed using Odin i9300xxLH1. While using this ROM I sign into Facebook , it recognize my phone as galaxy note 2. Wtf ?
That ROM does include s note lite which is the same as note 10.1.
My question is. Can that stock ROM be flash into our galaxy note?
Noted that the ROM is without kernel. Just firmware. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Can someone check that ROM out?
The new note 2 is fantastic! Ui look and feels just the same like the sgs3.:silly:
I think this update would worl on apps that call or import the thew new s-pen sdk package..
I am awaiting for new innovative approaches to start flowing in.
One great feature i would like is the i can hold the pen in the Contacts app side bar where the alphabets come it can switch fast to the corresponding names.. and further drill down .. on a particular contact it will hover a call or message button which i should click for action.

S Note Lite is just a taster of the S Note for the Note series of devices. It is not the same version of S Note found on 10.1 tab, I believe.
I am so boggled by the responses to this thread.

Will the S View Cover be useless on AOSP?

Lately I have been contemplating the purchase of an s view cover. It seems like it would come in very handy for me.
But seeing how I will most likely run AOSP based roms I wonder if it would even matter.
From my understanding, the most we could use it for would be to automatically turn on and off the screen.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
I don't see it working on AOSP seeing how its a Samsung feature

Yes you can...
Yo buddy... yes it can be used with aosp.... use Beanstalk rom series, not sure if its available for ur model... i use n9005

can you post the link, please?
S view cover can be used on AOSP rom merely for activating screen. The preview Caller ID and answer without open the s-cover function will not work.
I tried with Danvdh GE edition rom.

If we install stock android on i9500 ?

Hello,
Quick question. Can we flash stock android on S4 i9500 to make it identical to the one being released by google ? (To receive the updates directly from Google, and not from Samsung).
Thanks
It might be possible in future for snapdragon i9505 version since vanilla gs4 would probably get the same hardware but not for octa

What do you exactly mean by stock android?

He probably means vanilla AOSP, without any traces of Samsung's bloatware, interfaces or apps.
Non-Stock version
I'd rather go for a non-stock version of the galaxy s4 as it is more feature rich as compared to the google version of the same. It will essentially be the same phone except for some hardware changes but is otherwise much better to have. Also, after rooting I have the privilege to delete all/any bloatware I donot wish to have. As there are somethings I wouldn't want to miss out on.
It might be a matter of personal choice but buying a TW S4 gives you the option to go either way using custom ROMs.

Looking for a "Best of both worlds" ROM.

I eventually got round to rooting my i9505 the other day and now I'm looking for an AOSP ROM that has the Samsung camera, video player and other useful apps. Has anyone seen anything among the numerous options available that offers this?
Cheers.

not gonna happen... best you'll manage is a touchwiz rom with JB domination theme...
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
So at very best, a GE ROM or even CM10.1 with the Galaxy camera APK that I've seen mentioned would be a good start!?!?
Sent via telepathy
I will leve that. To many good features are does not exist on custom Roms that are already available in the ugly and not usable touchwiz interface

And that's the only thing putting me off taking the plunge at the moment. I think I'll just start with getting some bloatware off there as it is and see how that goes.
Cheers.

[Q] Replace the touchwiz settings app with standard?

Hello all,
I was wondering if it was at all possible to replace the severely annoying touchwiz settings app with the standard settings app found on aosp roms and the like, this touchwiz version is one of my biggest irks with this phone and if I can replace it would mean a much easier time waiting for an aosp rom
No you can't,
You are gonna have to wait for one of the aosp ROMs to be completed, sorry.
Keep an eye on Galaxy S5 original android development.

Once the Google edition drops then we'll get the chance to rid ourselves of touchwiz. I absolutely can't wait, coming from a Nexus4.

Forgive my asking, but why is it such an impossible or difficult thing to do? I was under the impression that the settings app just linked various settings components together and that they were not all actually contained within.

The settings is built into the Framework.res/other integral system apps and cannot simply be swapped out.
