[Q] S4 Active software update? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Just received JDQ39.I537ucuamf3 OTA, anyone have any idea what it was? Probably just made it even harder to root lol.

I usually don't take OTA updates if I have any plans of rooting or keeping root.

U.S. localized versions of the latest MEA/MF2 branch of Samsung official builds.
Check over in the i9505 threads for more info. It's possible some things have been tweaked for AT&T, but probably not a whole lot.
That update will probably allow app2sd functionality, not to mention the "purple smearing" effect some have complained of, and a few other little updates.
But as the other poster said, I wouldn't flash it until it's confirmed that it doesn't patch the loki aboot exploit. Otherwise, you can say goodbye to custom roms and root.

Questions go in Q&A

Unfortunately the update is FORCED. In mine there was no way to not accept it. If you hit cancel it just reboots and installs anyway. So not much choice on not taking it...
It does include app2sd though. Which is nice.

Only forced if you're completely stock and un-rooted.
At a bare minimum, you should root, and freeze the appropriate OTA update apps to prevent that kinda thing.
Again, AT&T will eventually patch the loki-exploit, and possibly at the same time roll out "root defeating" kernels.
It's just a matter of time.

There isn't an option but to be completely stock and unrooted with this phone yet unfortunately.

Right. Thus my statement that we don't have a choice but to take the update on the S4 Active (right now at least).

It seems the update will only download on wifi, so if you want to avoid taking it in hopes that root comes out soon, do not use wifi.

God dang it! I wish I read this thread BEFORE accepting the update. Now I really hope AT&T or Samsung has not patched anything that prevent root.
I cannot NOT use Wifi since I have very limited data plan...
Has it ever happen in the past, at least with AT&T phone, that they send OTA update that PREVENT rooting the phone EVER?

Don't fret. We have some mighty fine developers here. You will be able to root it.

LCD screens don't suffer from the purple smearing anyway. That's just something that AMOLED screens do. No way around it except to change the colors a bit. Which was all they did for the GS4.

I never took the update (I didn't connect to wifi so it didn't force me to update) but now I want to update it. However, when I hit the update button it tells me that 'the software update was interrupted' and won't download the new FW. If I hit it again it says I have to wait another 24 hrs. I tried changing the date to a day ahead but it still failed. I was able to update the wifes phone no problem but I accepted it as soon as it notified me.
Is the above link the current FW? I see the name is UCUAMF1 but mine came with UCUAMF2 from the store... I'd rather just update the FW since it appears everyone else got forced to update but can still root it.
Edit: Phone fixed itself overnight connected to wifi.

Update message?

My wife's phone just said there is a new update available. I did not let it install. Anyone else get this update alert?
Not yet, no ota or via kies. I'm on Rogers, i know it's not ATT but since the S2, we had all updates a few days before ATT which is the sister company in the US and nothing here yet. Can you check and see if is this long awaited update samsung started rolling out 2 weeks ago?
I have AT&T version of S4 and did not get any update notice and nothing shows up on check updates.

Well, from what I've been reading it's possible in addition to the update, they may be trying to patch Loki, which is why I was hesitant. I was messing with it to get rid of the lock icon/custom boot up. I tried flashing the stock Rom with Odin but it only seemed to flash on top of the Rom already installed. Then once it boot up, the update management thing kicked in. It's possible it was just triggering the first update we got a few weeks back, and not a new one.

If this isn't about the "BMEA" update, please have it deleted or locked. Another Update thread that isn't about an update isn't helping anyone. Nothing personal, but people need to confirm what they are posting about before they post about it.
people also need to stop acting like moderators.
How am I going to verify it, if I haven't installed it yet? If it indeed was the new update with a patch for Loki, I am not the one who wants to flash it first.

AT&T SGH-I467 OTA Update I467UCAMF2

Hey everyone. I just got an OTA update for my Note 8.0 LTE (AT&T). It's a small update (16.3MB). The new firmware build is I467UCAMF2. This is probably just a bugfix update but OTAs are almost always a good thing.

OK so allow me to translate that into English:
"Because we're A, T and f***ing T, we decided to make Samsung replace Google's normal Android setup app with our own called AT&T Ready2Go. The problem is, again because we're A, T and f***ing T, our app sucks. If you have two-step verification enabled on your Google account, you won't be able to sign into your Google account during setup with AT&T Ready2Go. I guess we underestimated how many people actually have it turned on, so oops! Our bad. Here, it's enabled. Happy now?"
I manually updated a couple of hours ago. After playing around with the Note 8 with the update for about an hour I no longer experience the screen stutter/freeze/pause/etc. issue. I hope this in fact is fixed, but so far so good.

Would be nice if someone had the OTA zip, as it is possible a root could be made from it if the right images are included.

A little of both. The bootloader is encrypted and locked on the AT&T model, but also, very few of us on XDA actually have one. Let's be real. People around here thumb their noses at tablets with an LTE connection a lot of times. They just have no hipster cred in the Android geek community. The in crowd just buys a WiFi-only tablet and tethers it to their phone. It's the geekier thing to do, even if it's a pain in the @$$. You can talk about why LTE tablets are useful until you're blue in the face but it falls on deaf ears more often than not.
Unfortunately, I'm not very optimistic that we'll ever see root unless there comes a time where the WiFi-only root method works on the AT&T model.

Is it encrypted? I got this tablet 2nd hand and I may never even put service on it. If I can't root it, I'll probably trade it for a wifi version. I know AT&T and Verizon pushed an OTA to the S4's that prevented root. Luckily I was rooted/rom'ed prior to that. My GN8 doesn't have the latest OTA. I'm still hopeful for root and unlock/simunlock so I can grab a pre-paid card for this tab.

I saw this posted earlier. I think the big question is does he release it and thus burn an exploit or does he wait for 4.3 in hopes that it is still there and thus provides a root option for 4.3 as well. I'm not sure which is my preference. The only thing I personally miss by not being rooted is the tethering, which I only use in emergency situations anyway, so its not crucial for me. However, it is nice to have freedom from the carrier release cycle if we get a way to flash roms without an unlocked bootloader.

Just proving the version.
I would rather that he wait and see if the exploit is still available in 4.3. There's a way to go back to the first build from this update, so if you really need root that badly, you can always just do that. Once SafeStrap is ready, we'll probably see a zip of the update that can be flashed, so I find little reason for him to burn this flaw right now.

Hi again,
I installed the upgrade assistant in installer mode but for some reason it is not picking up the new NE9 update on my computer. See attached print screen. Very strange.. It sees the update on my phone to download though.:cyclops: Do you know why this is and how I can get it to see the update on the upgrade assistant as you mentioned?
Kind Regards
Can you explain why you want the update so bad? You do realize that rooting and accepting official otas is completely contradictory, correct? OTAs are generally what fix things like what towelroot exploits. If you accept official OTA, you will likely lose root.
But can't I just re root after the ota? I guess the reason I want the Ota because I heard of camera enhancements and stability fixes

No. OTA have patches for known security flaws as well. The flaw that towelroot relies on is closed after the new OTA. Meaning, no more root.
edit: in this case I believe folks have figured out a work around for keeping root with the update. In general though, if you value root and what it provides you do not accept official releases.

@ks3rv3rg I believe the links mentioned above provide a workaround for the Root to be kept after updating.
As for the problem nick, I can't help you there. I haven't personally take it as I see taking OTA's is silly with a rooted phone you can modify to be much more. Perhaps someone else who has done it will chime in...
Thank you both for your perspectives.. Plus, I can always just wait for a ROM that currently has the update installed.

Can someone grab and post the ota from your cache/fota folder.
Yes new update can be rooted
The official 4.4.4 and unofficial 5.0 can both be rooted with CF auto root

I wouldn't use that unless you care to trip KNOX and give up warranty. If all you want is root to remove bloat and tweak you can without tripping.
I can say I am now on the official 4.4.4 update, rooted without knox flagged (IE still full warranty).
Runs great.
The only change I don't like is before I had WiFi calling always set to on and it would be on when I turned my WiFi on and not when Wifi was off.
Now if I have it on and my WiFi off, it turns my Wifi on randomly or on reboots, even if it was prior off.
Oh well.
Anyway. For those that want to root and keep Knox 0x0 (not tripped) it's simple.
I used Kies to update to the latest release (OTA kept giving an error that many others on sprint forum are getting).
After this I installed towelroot (don't run yet). Next I used Odin to flash the NE5 stock kernel. Ran towelroot, ran Odin to flash NK4 kernel back, after installed SU and now all is well. Full root, good performance and not knox tripped. One thing to note is that while on the NE5 kernel you will get tons of errors, just ignore them, the original kernel will fix when all done.
I don't care for custom recovery and the stock kernel honestly runs great and I can manually do any tweaks I want but have the piece of mind of not having tripped knox.
Just wanted to share though that this work around works on sprint. I know other forums mention how to do on other providers etc.
**update**
I posed the files I used in another thread (as seems we have duplicate topics). So if anyone needs the kernels I got em already converted to tar and ready to go.

Nice work. I'm sure some would find this helpful! I tripped knox within the fist 20mins of owning my device ?

Yea, I've been fighting hard to avoid tripping it for the moment. I mean I guess when all said and done I don't care TOO much, but for now if I can root without tripping I will do it. (resale value also higher if not tripped so might get new phone in March).
I imagine this work-around won't work when 5.0 comes out as the kernel is changing too much so unless someone finds a new exploit to root without knox trip I will probably end up tripping it upon official 5.0 lol but until that time I have some piece of mind if anything stops working.
I'm actually fine with stock I just hate all the damn bloat they put on it so have to root to ditch it all. I don't know why they don't just make it so we can uninstall whatever we want...
Is there any reason to update to this? I might just skip and wait for Lollipop.

Performance, bug fixes etc. etc.
Remember this is already a skipped update. Sprint skipped 4.4.3.
It also includes new modem firmware among other things.
The wait game could be a bit. I don't expect Sprint to get 5.0 until around the time the S6 is releasing. Samsung is almost done with it but it takes months before Sprint will pump it out. Do you think they would have bothered with 4.4.4 if this was going to be out in a month?
I see no reason why one would wait? Nothing is lost, root is still possible. It may also be a prep for 5.0. Maybe they are using it as a firmware stepping stone. Who knows. I wouldn't bother waiting.

So you think we won't get Lollipop until April when we already have a leaked (pretty damn stable) build?? I'm sorry but that is straight up idiotic. We will have Lollipop by the end of Dec-Jan.
As of now there is no towelroot for 5.0 so you might have to. Xposed also doesn't work and might be a while before its able to run on the new platform.
I'm running the 5.0 leak now, we will definitely have Lollipop by Jan at the latest, I think more like late Dec

Might not be April but it won't be by February or probably March even.
The key word you said is "Leaked"...
Sprint had 4.4.4 builds in testing for months also, they just don't always leak out.
Just because you have a non-production version doesn't make it magically release sooner.
If you look around you will notice Sprint is generally a tad slower on some releases at times. This is because they like to wait and see what other providers do and also avoid having to do more releases.
Take Verizon S5 for example. It got 4.4.4 a lot sooner vs. we did, but the downfall was it had issues and security holes that they had to go back and patch again with more OTA's.
Sprint waited longer, didn't have to turn around and do all of this.
Waiting longer can often mean a more stable product as it allows other things to mature.
Sprint also generally doesn't like to update an phone right away if a newer model is about to come out with the new stuff also as it could cut into sales.
S5 will get 5.0 but based on how Sprint operates and historical events I don't see them doing it before a new flagship model comes out in which some people may feel they can now hold off longer. The leak FWIW is kind of like a marketing toy. It shows that they are committed to upgrading the OS so people don't do the whole "I'll never use sprint/samsung on sprint again cause they stopped updates". They are doing the updates, just doing it slower.
At the end of the day we are all speculating. You don't know for 100% just as I don't. I'm just saying (in my head at least) my thought makes more "sense".
FWIW I hope I am wrong because like you I own this phone too and want to have the new fancy stuff
