On my S4 that was rooted with Odin and has TWRP installed, I'm getting ready to flash the BEANS ROM in it, but when I try to make a backup of my stock ROM, it says it failed due to not enough memory. I cleared a bunch of crap off of my memory card but it still failed. I can't find anything telling me where it is trying to save the backup to, my phone or my SD card. Does anyone know if I can edit the location it is trying to save the backup to?

I suggest to try OBackup from Play Store. The same issue occurred to me and I was able to backup successfully using this wonderful app. And yes you can change the backup location from the app settings.

Exactly what I needed... I thought. I was able to change the storage location to "Micro SD Card" and still comes back as FAIL. The bottom line says "Not enough free space on storage". There is 27 GB available on the SD card.

Philz Touch is the most stable recovery imo atm http://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j...oYgAjwGhpXgFeQpbRFsAaOQ&bvm=bv.50165853,d.ZWU. Flash with Odin or CWM/TWRP.

I'd been pretty happy with TWRP till now. Flashed Phils Touch and running a backup now. It sure is slowwww. At least it is working. Many times TWRP would take a while to even load. I still wonder if something else is going on there...

Is the only way to wipe the sd card is to use CWM? Is there any other way? Also, will this have any negative effects to the device? Does the system require specific folders to work/run?
First you need to make a backup of your rom using CWR, or i prefer 4ext ( mainly cause i can enable usb mass storage while in recovery once plugged into pc)....
2nd ..You should copy all contents from ur storage by connecting ur phone to pc
3rd. place existing folders from sdcard storage to a backup folder a.k.a Nexus 7 backup folder. This will also include your backup under clockworkmod/backup/xxxx_xx_backup.
4th...format sdcard in recovery(4ext) allows for multiple partitioning options..
5th..once formatted...download any ro and boot up..once booted up compare all folders in sdcard to those of backup on pc u created earlier and copy folders to new formatted sdcard..
6th.. note you created the backup earlier which is housed in the clockworkmod/backup folder on pc. Make sure u copy that folder onto sdcard along with i.e dcim, movies, pictures, gameloft..etc...etc..basically all files from ur pc folder that contains all the sdcard contents explained in step 3.
Hope this helps

I am not on any custom Rom at the moment. I'm currently running stock and stock kernal.
All I wanted to do was start fresh since my storage has become some what messy and unorganized. I already made a back up using cwm. I just wanted to wipe the sd card in the device. I already have my important files backed up including ePub, mp3, apk files etc
I'm just concerned that if I wipe the sd, the nexus 7 won't run the way it should.

I think you have the "Dead Space" that android commonly sees.
Like you already asked you need to reformat your tab etc, that is THE ONLY way to return the dead space back into usable.
Maybe: backup and restore->factory reset, is the option you are looking for?

If I do the factory reset, I have a few questions.
One, will it cause me to lose root?
Second, will it also wipe the storage card? ( I would assume so)
Third, I never heard of this dead space issue. Why does this happen?
Don't know about root. But that should be easy enough to get back. I was ballsy enough to press the option thought it would prompt me before wiping and it did .
See screenshot.

Thanks for that. I am currently trying to back everything up at the moment. I'm nervous but I'm going to give it a shot. Let you know how it goes.
I was thinking, maybe if I went in to staples and showed them that the storage card was showing me incorrect info, maybe they would swap it ouf for me for one of the newer 32 gb ones. I'd even pay the $50 difference if the 16gb drops down to $200
Might be worth a shot lol

Okay, so I reset the tablet and nothing really has changed. It didn't format the storage because pretty much everything I had it in there before is still there except for music and videos etc. i still have root access. I still only have 3 gb available so something is definietely wrong. I'm just not really sure what to do. The system even rebooted in tablet mode which I had it set to before. What does anyone think the next step should be?

If you've formatted your system you're not a noob so you've probably already done this too, but run ES File Explorer > Manager > SD Card Analyst.
Do you use CWM to backup you roms?

I grew the balls to just format the SD card using CWM. I was pretty nervous but it did reboot and it wiped everything.
I now have 13.0 gb free out of 13.2. Pretty pleased. Finally!.

No problem. I was really nervous. In all honesty though there has to be another way. I mean I have root access obviously. Lets say you get some regular user who doesn't know much and they just want to wipe their device clean. What exactly are you supposed to do? why isn't a factory reset wiping out the storage card? It is very strange.

Because the SD card is where you store pictures, music and other stuff, a factory reset wiping that would be a long process(copying it off then back on) and most of the time not required
and the space not showing up in storage settings menu, it only shows stuff in the default android locations, just a fyi

do you mean that you can acess internal sd card from recovery mode ? , I have done factory reset and when I boot into recovery and chose apply update from external sd card , I only see files on my sd card not on the internal memory , but from the tab itself I can normally read files on the internal memory , the problem is only with the recovery mode
If im reading this right, you are selecting to install from ext sd which is telling the recovery to open the path to the ext sd card....IF you want to install from internal sd card select install from internal sd card in the recovery menu.
Or do you not have the option to access internal?
Edit; Just checked my device, and there is NO option to install from internal on stock recovery. Only external and cache. So I guess the tab is fine. Maybe, like me your just used to custom recoveries

I can understand why Sammy have prevented the install to and from internal sd. They don't want people accidentally deleting an important file or overwriting something then complaing that Samsung have created a dodgy product.
I'm so used to working with custom recoveries and have access all areas to the inner workings it feels odd to suddenly have only a few options available I unrooted my device to reinstall the latest jb update. Not sure I want to root again just yet, for the first time I have found a device that actually doesn't need rooted and custom roms to make it better. This device is almost perfect as is. Plus, touchwiz is actually turning out to be pretty fabtastic on these newer devices. NEVER thought I'd hear myself say that lol.

How is it possible to have a custom system status if I did not root my phone? I tried to do a check for a software update, and it says "your device has been modified. Software updates are not available." I have not rooted my phone, so I'm not sure how the system could be "custom". I checked the Knox kernel and warranty void, both are 0x0. Any ideas?
UPDATE: I unmounted and removed my sd card, restarted the phone and it's fine. This is the same sd card that I used in my rooted Note2. I wonder if there's something left over that's making the Note 3 think it's rooted....

It works until you reinsert the sd card and reboot. I'm not sure what on the sd card is making it think it's rooted. I think I will try wiping my sd card. Will report back.
UPDATE: Ok, wiping the sd card works.
its because you have a 64GB SD card...note sure why, but i had this issue since my S4 and still have it today on my note 3. It sucks but it will come back whenever you start putting stuff back on your SD, there is no way around this, i've been working on a thread in the S4 section and have over 300 replies but no one was able to fix this

yes it looks like to be specific to a 64GB card...
but I've done a few tests one year ago on my S3 that also had the same problem...
it was working fine with a newly formatted card.
it was also working fine with a small amount of music file... but as soon as I filled my card (with at 5GB space left), it started to show custom status.
Today I found out that I had the same problem with my Note 3 when trying to detect/install the latest update. Sad to see that Samsung did not fix this problem.
it looks like that that process that scans the SD card at boot is causing some type of false identification...
I'm sure it would be an easy fix for Samsung... but you have to find someone to first understand this problem and work on it.
I've contacted Samsung support in the past and the only thing they told me was to use a 32GB card max.
I found something interesting today...
I synched around 50GB of music files today... And after a reboot, I got the custom device status. My sync folder had a few hundreds of files and subfolders.
I moved all the files in one unique folder and rebooted my device.
Boot was faster... Media scanner finished a lot faster... And device status was back to normal.
It's not a fix... But at least it's a work around that might help someone.

SDFix definitely fixes the issue if you are rooted. Android 4.4 changes the stock permissions, so apps only have read/write permissions to folders that they create and can't write to folders created manually or by other apps. SDFix restores permissions to how they were prior to 4.4. Its less secure, but it allows programs like Titanium Backup to function again.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Right now there isn't a way to change the folder where the Nova backups are stored (/sdcard/data/com.teslacoilsw.launcher/backup). What you can do next time is make your backup and then copy it to your SD card or PC. When you do your next reset you can copy that backup file back to where it's expected to be and be back in business. Kind of poor coding that you can't just save it to your SD in the first place...
Omega ROM doesn't have that glitch.
An app called File expert can read/write to external xd card without root. They have sorted this issue out
Sdfix did work guys. I used it to backup Nova setting on ExtSd
