I am going through a NIGHTMARE with defective devices through sprint - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Ok, first off. Let me state that I paid FULL price for my galaxy s4 when I originally purchased it. After about a day, the screen went out on me, large areas of the super amoled where completely blacked while, while some areas still displayed picture. This was annoying, but things happen in the early stages of device manufacturing, although I have never experienced this with a Samsung device. When I returned to the sprint store that i purchased the phone from the sales rep was pretty cool about it, and agreed to replace it. The second replacement had scuffing all over the body, a ding here, a dent there, not to mention the phone crashed every hour. At this point I'm starting to get pretty irritated, irritated enough to leave Samsung this time around. The guy mentioned that not many are experiencing this problem, and maybe I should give the HTC ONE a shot. (Which is code for you may have un-diagnosed OCD, so let me just give you a different device.) As soon as I took the HTC ONE home I was completely shocked. Never in my life have I seen such poor quality control standards for a flagship device. There was paint runoff, gaps between panels (when HTC advertises no gap build quality), and speaker malfunctioning. Now, this is my THIRD device. I WANTED the Samsung Galaxy s4, and in some way still do, but decided to go a different route simply so I could have a working cell phone. I paid 600 dollars for a top end device, and am yet to receive that. How should I go about this? Do I go back to the same sprint store, while looking mentally insane requesting a fourth return, or attempt a different sprint location who may actually have working devices? All I want a is damn galaxy s4 or HTC one in prestine, brand new condition that WORKS. Is this not obtainable anymore, even at a price of 600.00? Claiming warranty on a device with scuffing and alignment issues is not going to happen, period. They will claim I caused the damage, even though the entire phone is in prestine condition with zero evidence of dropping or abuse. I refuse to accept a response like that from sprint. Am I crazy for wanting a perfect phone?
Any advice on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated. I love Samsung, their quality control is hands down superior to virtually any other company. However, I need a working smartphone, and at a price of 600.00 + activation fee + gas for exchanges every day + infecting me with OCD .... something needs to give here, and soon.

You are perfectly in your right mind to want to get your full monies worth. Take it back. And if they don't believe you, ask for a manager. Explain how they keep giving you defective devices. If you get a replacement. Open it and check it out at the store in front of them. If you don't, try another store. Do the same process. Otherwise you might be better off stopping service than going to a different store. This is why I like getting phones through best buy. Geek squad understands this kind of crap.

Agree 100%^

Keep puchiny i had 5 s4 with blue spots in screen and reboot issues on 2 of them on the 6th exchange I got a perfect device. Im ocd as well so I know how you feel.

I've had 4 s4's. I bought it brand new, got it replaced because overheating problems, then the other 2 had screen tint issues. There was half of the screen that looked green. I kept going to the store and thanksfully my last replacement haven't give me a problem. My advice is to keep going to the store and get it replaced or get your money back.

As long as you are within 14 days go for it.
Make sure and open up your device before leaving with it.
These devices arrive sealed from the manufacturer so it isn't Sprint causing your woes here it is the manufacturer.
Once you are beyond 14 days you will have to deal with the manufacturer or use total equipment protection if you have it so get it taken care of soon.

First off you should have gotten a new SGS4 phone replacement not 1 that was scuffed up.I regards to the HTC 1 I have heard lots of horror stories about QC issues on their devices. Go to another sprint store(corporate owned if possible)and try your luck there.

After my 6th s4 had lines going through the screen and burnt pixels..... I really lost my cool. I demanded my money back so I could purchase the s4 elsewhere. Got my refund... went to best buy, and what do you know, an s4 that WORKS. The sprint store I was dealing with was pretty cool with all the exchanges, and were jusy mind blown by my bad luck with this s4. I called samsung and asked them how they plan to release different s4 builds if they still cant get their QC under control with the original s4.
I can't say Samsung really screwed up this round, considering I could have been dealing with a bad shipment, but after reading various posts, its pretty clear samsung has some MAJOR flaws that need to be worked out in their manufacturing department.
P.s.
ALL the phones I had, including this one, has purple smearing. Pretty sure virtually all s4's have it.

Wow, that's really crazy and troublesome what you went through. I feel lucky b/c my first smartphones received never had such problems.
The purple smear, though, is a software fix away in a future firmware update.

That's great. Yes all S4 have smearing. It has to do with the pixels catching up to what you're doing.

I'm not sure I understand all this talk about purple smearing. I got my phone off Amazon, and I've had zero issues. I've never seen anything that I would remotely describe as "purple smearing." Maybe a tiny, almost undescernable about of ghosting if I'm looking at black text on a white background and I scroll really fast, but nothing worse than any other device I've owned (better in most cases, actually).

Same here I got two s4s one from craiglist the other from assurion notna single issue with either. I am pretty shocked to hear of such issues. Also wondering if its possible it could be psychosomatic

Well, if you would consider 10+ burnt pixels , body scuffing, and lines running down your screen as just high expectations, im sure you would have been quite satisfied.

Turn your brightness on auto or down, go into your settings and scroll. You will see purple smearing and text ghosting. Its a firmware issue and im willing to bet all s4's have it.

I don't know if that's an S4 issue as much as it's an issue with AMOLED screens in general. In any case, it doesn't affect me because I like to keep my screen nice and bright.

I decided to turn my brightness all the way down and try it for myself. Still no smearing.

Me either. I work for Sprint and sell four to ten s4's in a day. Haven't had one return except for the usual suspects who claim the phone got so hot it melted their face off and it never gets that hot when we check. Of course, these are usually the folk with candy crush and multiple crap free games running in the back ground. Everybody in my family had s4's with 0 defect. 5 to be exact

Amoled screens are not supposed to smear purple and ghost at low brightness. I have personally handled over ten galaxy s4's and every single one had this issue. You are either not catching it or extremely lucky. Either way it's not that big of a deal, doesn't bother me really, just annoying knowing its there.

Can you post video of the smearing? Because since reading this post, I can't duplicate it any device I've sold from the store, our demo devices or our family devices.

Open the app drawer and swipe through the apps slowly, back and forth....I verified it on every S4 in our store and mine yesterday...I owned the phone for weeks and never noticed.
Some others have mentioned an issue that has been present on all AMOLED...that issue is different and is "crush" where black/gray are not rendered correctly. I too made the assumption this is what everyone was refering too.
Also mentioned it is supposedly in the kernel and will be fixed in an update.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app

Uh, that's written into the framework. The opaque setting of an icon is meant to change as it transitions on and off the screen. That is not a defect or smearing. Would love to see video of it's so easy to duplicate.

Am I being petty, pebble blue finish not perfect

Just got my blue SGS3 today and I've noticed one area where the finish appears scratched, but UNDERNEATH the glaze. Hard to photograph with my crappy old phone, but the photo makes it look less noticeable than it really is.
Should I keep it or send it back? Anyone else got this prob?
I see what you mean. Maybe that's the reason the blue was delayed in the UK?
maybe thats the issue they had for recalling all the blues. Yours slipped though the net
Blue went back for a respray .

It's not a cheap phone and it's brand new... I wouldn't be happy with that finish either and would get it replaced.

^^ this. For a phone that costs $700, I'd think anything that looks like it shouldn't be there warrants a replacement.
Take that ish back!
Well I've called up my service provider and they've agreed to replace it with another new one - only problem is that they aren't getting another batch in for 2 weeks new one won't arrive til 27th June...
I can still keep this one til then, but it means I have to baby it/not take it out for fear of dropping it/not root it, basically treat it as a loaner.
I'm half tempted to say f*ck it, I'll just keep it - but you're all right, this is an expensive machine, I don't want a faulty paint job! Who's to say it won't get worse as well, since it's a prob with manufacturing process.
Get a replacement and ask for bill credit for your trouble... you're going to have to re input all your apps and info... worth a shot

Already ahead of ya - they've agreed to waive the 2wks fees (£17) that I'll be without my "own" S3. I thought about going ape and demanding a whole month (£34), but took pity on the girl in the call centre in India.
Plus it's not really Three's fault, it's Samsung's fault. Three haven't been too bad to me so far, so I won't be an a**hole difficult customer to them until it's warranted

I'd recommend that you tell them your situation that you'll keep it till the new stock arrives and they ship it to you. I remember having a similar issue with my Motorola razor v9 flip phone (att USA). They sent me a new razor and asked me to return the defective phone once I've received the new one. This should work for them.
Ps: Lol looks like have a thing for Indian girls jk.

keep it and fanny about with it to your hearts content till they replace it. just remember and revert it to stock and triangle away before you post it back to them.

True, but do you honestly think they are going to open every box and inspect for bad craftsmanship? If they were part of the assembly process then sure, but they merely order en mass and then either drop ship to their customers or reship from their warehouse.
I think the OP is doing the right and ethical thing by not blowing this out of proportion. To many people these days try and milk every little "mistake" that cross their path. But to each their own, the important thing is that he is getting a replacement with no down time and a few bucks for his troubles.

Think it has something to do with Apple, whether they want to admit it or not. Had a black version been available, I'd have gotten that one, but I've settled with the white version for now(was going for the blue version, but after seeing it in person I'm glad I went with white when the former was delayed).
It'll probably not be that long lived if the Note 2 gets released in October.

[Q] LS980 sprint call qualtiy tricky at times.

I picked up my G2 a few days ago at Best Buy and I didn't have any problems with it until I started to notice on calls at times the audio coming in would get distorted for a second and go back to normal even though I have fairly good signal. I'm asking if i should take it back and get a new one or if this is something known about or maybe a software issue.

I am on my 2nd one and still having same issue. So a return might not help you. I have spent a lot of time on phone with sprint. They reset my network, hard and soft resets, and their answer is network issues. I get a popping and slight occaisional static on my end of call, other end hears me fine.. I have a 3rd seperate one besides my returned two and that one is fine. What I have noticed is if I roam, my calls are crystal clear, unfortunately I can't force a constant roam. I love the phone so I am gonna stick with it. Possibly the processor and sprint not behaving nicely? I am in the New York area, where are you guys?

I am not an expert, but do read the forums a lot and a bunch of Verizon users had same issue and now sprint customers are starting with same problem. Both CDMA, so possibly, yes, software related.
All of you, Please call Sprint & make them aware so they can fix this. I already let them know as this is my 2nd one & it exhibits the same problems.
I travel between Dorchester and Malden MA most often and I get the same issue. I tried all sorts of things. I did a chat with tech support and a phone call. They setup an appt for me in a corporate store and the tech just dismissed and imediately said it's a network issue with ALL of the newer Sprint phones. He mentioned the S3, S4 and of course the G2 (how convenient) as well as the Note 3. Mind you my daughter just got an S3 a month ago and her phone is fine. The tech just kind of left it at that but suggested he try a network reset with no guarantees of course. He also suggested I try roaming of a GSM carrier (he said we aren't charged for roaming). He also said if it does it when roaming then I should bring it back (I assume then he would actually do real troubleshooting. So I left the store and was in the area for about an hour and things got progressively worse. I ended up going back and the manager switched it out right away. So far the new one sounds pretty good. Time will tell.

This was a problem with the note 3 when released on sprint as well "Problem:
*
Voice quality on a connected call is garbled, with intermittent popping, morphing, cracking." I found that a few minutes ago. Same exact issues, both phones have same processor, sprint sent out a patch and it resolved issue for those phones. I have called sprint and been to two stores, returned one, got another with same issue. People need to speak up to sprint forum on sprints site, so they realize we are having same issue and hopefully they fix it soon. CSR s in sprint are useless, a manager at a corporate store said to me " I haven't sold a g2 yet, so I can't justify problem you are having " [email protected]#$ng great answer. I wanted to punch her out of her chair. Hopefully we all can be at ease soon.
I went to the corporate store on Boylston St, near Copley. FYI, the tech that paid attention advised me that the tower near the Pru is having problems so don't walk that way and expect to use your phone. Not only will it sound like **** but you'll drop calls too.
So far with the replacement phone, I've only had the issue a couple times

I've called Sprint about the issue to let them know and I've called Geek squad because of my warranty with Best buy and Geek squad just told me to get it replaced and I think that's what I'm going to do, if it's something that can be fixed with a software update this one should act the same right?

I just had mine replaced yesterday because of a dead pixel and it is doing the same thing. So I would assume so.

Talked to Tmobile today regarding what to do

I talked to tmobile on their twitter help page and then called them. The rep told me on the phone I can keep the device if I like and when they get replacements in they will ship the replacement FIRST and then I can send them back my original Note 7. I ordered mine via the store so I have to deal with corporate. Tmobile help page told me the same thing I can keep my Note and simply swap it out but said I can have it shipped to the store too.
I hope this is the case and I can have it shipped to my house and simply send the old one back. The only store near me is always busy and their staff is a PITA to deal with.
I do have an S7 to use as a backup but hate the small screen and I don't want to get a refund then have to wait for that to be put back on the card.
I am watching the V20 too. I might be out next week BUT we know how the G5 has issues and turned into a major flop. I'd hate leaving the Note and it ends up the V20 is a POS phone and stuck with a worse phone.
I just called them, they said bring it back to the store for a full refund or a new phone. Replacements aren't even available yet , why can't people just be competent, not asking for a genius, just basic competency.

You mean the reps? I think Tmobile is being pretty straight forward, so far compared to the other carriers who are not even really sure what to do yet. Overall though I hate the reps especially the ones in the stores. Most are clueless. The store basically says if you ordered it you have to go through Tmobile and the store won't issue a refund.
What problems did the G5 have?

I hear battery life and the modules some were reporting they become loose over time and durability issues too I've seen people talk about. Overall a crap device that was hyped a lot before launch. I don't want to get a v20 and it has issues and is a crap phone. At least with the Note I know what I'm getting.

The V20 is gonna be a monster. I actually owned the V10 and it was a power house. Very durable. V20 would be the only reason for me leaving Note 7

From a business perspective, this is not the result of incompetence. They know that trial lawyers are waiting around for the first Note 7 from T-Mobile to burn so they can hit them (and Samsung) with a class-action lawsuit. If that happens, the cost to T-Mobile will be huge, so they are trying to get the Note 7s back ASAP, even though they aren't ready for it. This is a totally unexpected event. They didn't stockpile alternate phones in the last few weeks in preparation for a bunch of people trading back their brand-new Note 7s.
They should allow a pre order replacement so not everyone is calling them or everyone going to the store at once when the new phones are available. It's gonna get chaotic.

Thing is there is no official time line of events. Who knows how the failure works and when, not saying most will be affected but saying it hasnt happened yet isnt really concrete proof it wont ever happen.
Like the ring of death on the Xbox 360.
Also no phone should explode if you are using a different charger. Thats again a failure of the manufacturer
Note 7 replacement
I just received this email from T-Mobile
Dear Customer,
Samsung notified us today that they are recalling the Galaxy Note7 due to a battery safety concern. There have been 35 cases reported globally as of September 1st. Samsung has communicated to us that they will have replacement Note7 devices that should be available in the next 2-4 weeks.
As our customer, your safety is our number one priority. We're making it easy for you to return and exchange your Galaxy Note7, free of charge.
You have options:
1.Sign up and we’ll let you know when the new Samsung Galaxy Note7 is available
2.Switch to a new device
3.Return phone for a full refund

I'm a bit conflicted. Odds are there is nothing wrong with my battery, and otherwise this phone is perfect. Who knows if the replacement, rushed out in the next couple of weeks, will be as good.

I posted a similar post yesterday, I've seen it with HTC and Samsung where a few months into sales of a phone they seem to silently switch manufacturing to another vendor or use cheaper parts I guess to improve profits.....so my thought is now with this whole recall and it's cost to the bottom line will Samsung (A) Keep everything quality wise the same and take the full hit? or (B) Save every penny they can short of the battery pack? (i.e cheaper made camera parts from cheaper vendor etc)
You know someone on the boards the other day brought up a good point.
If the CPSC gets involved with this (as of now they are NOT) it will be illegal to sell a note 7 that has been recalled. So if you were going to sell your faulty Note 7 on ebay or something
it would be illegal.
So i would def get a replacement if you are planning to sell down the road.
My wife and I will trade ours in when they get the replacements in stock. We're not going to trade it in just quite yet.
its my understanding that T Mobile US might not be affected by the recall at all, and we all might not wind up needing new phones.

Samsung could be looking at another recall...

According to this article....
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2016/10/samsung-note-7-second-round-recalls/?utm_source=mobilerepublic
Sprint is also letting users switch there Note 7 for ANY phone.
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2016/10/sp...swap-for-any-phone/?utm_source=mobilerepublic
If there is another recall I might go ahead and get the Pixel XL.
Sent from my SM-N930V using Tapatalk
Verizon should step up and do the same thing as Sprint. At this point, the Note 7 should just be taken off the market.
I'd like the pixel XL, but the Verizon is adding bloatware and handling updates on their version. Do some research on the absolute disaster that was the last time Verizon had a Nexus. It's a total joke.

Whoops Samsung! The Pixel phones look decent. Not sure why they decided to only go with IP53 rating but how often do you really jump in a pool with a phone rated higher anyways. When I had my Note 7 it was a pretty cool phone. I started to get used to the edge screen by the time I took it back to Verizon. I switched to an iPhone 7 Plus 256 and it's pretty damn sweet. I have been experiencing some Cell and GPS issues so I might have to go to an Apple store and have them replace my phone. I signed up for the beta program and have iOS 10.1 beta 2 which now includes the depth of field dual camera effect that they demoed in the keynote. I have a feeling that we are going to see a lot of phone problems over the next few years as these big manufacturers try to beat each other to the punch each year with their new products.

yea, this is totally crazy that Verizon has already said that they'll allow people to exchange their notes, during the initial recall they waited forever to even acknowledge that there was a problem, even though we were all receiving text messages from Samsung telling us to take the phone back.
Let's sit and think for just a minute. Other than whining about some app not working or not being able to root the damn thing, nobody on XDA has reported any type of problem with their Note 7 smoking. Most of us here a capable of doing some really stupid stuff trying to make things go faster and yet nobody burned one up? This seems more like the press making something out of nothing and some of you just wanting a V20 or a 7 Plus or a Pixel. Ya know what, in 5 months there will be something even newer and faster....... Get over it already.

Nah, I don't think that is it. I think people don't want to worry about there phone burning down there house, exploding in a hotel room, a plane, etc.
I think we can all agree that the relative failure rate is very small however if you are on the receiving end of that failure... It could be explosive
Im not turning my current Note 7 in until Samsung confirms that the issue with the plane is not isolated and is recall worthy.

Has the investigation even finished yet? We really need to wait for the results, for all we know it was a random occurrence that just happened to be a Note 7, or the person did something to cause it to do that. I think this is sabotage. Yes the first event was no doubt real. I also saw several news and forum reports about another exploding phone and it ended up being a totally different device. I'm just worried if I keep this phone I love, and all production and sales are halted, we may never see updates or support ever. That I may not be able to live with.
I spoke to two Verizon corporate stores last night and neither one knew anything about being able to exchange the replacement Note 7's.

My guess is they need a couple days to get the message out. I also suspect att is going to force Samsung's hand by the end of next week with their Friday deadline.
Also, take this report with a grain of salt too...but another reported safe phone is alleged to have popped.

Reps over the phone seems to know what's going on more than anyone else, I finally had gotten my replacement and it was fine. The phone it self was a great phone but my family and most all my friends are apple users which left me in the dark. I was also having issues finding a tempered glass with the edges and when the otterbox defender came out I had isssues with that as well, it drove me crazy. Battery life was honestly okay but felt that it should have been better. Long story short me and the wife weighed my options with the phone and I decided to get rid of it by edging up and getting a matte black iPhone 7 256gb. Don't flame me yet, money isn't a issue so I paid about $396 to get out of that phone. Of course this was around the time when the whole plane thing happened too. I didn't think they were going to open another investigation on it but since they did I guess I'll be the first to confirm that Verzion will return or exchange your replacement Note7 for any other smart phone. I found out last night when I called them about it and they did agree and state they were letting customers get something else and I'll also be getting my edge up money back which is perfect. I don't love my iPhone but I don't hate it either, I will say battery life on this thing BLOWS the note7 out of the water. I haven't been able to kill this thing yet and with heavy usage about (21hours) I only drop to 50%. Anyhow if you guys are looking to get into something else like the pixel phones or iPhone or whatever nows the time to do it. I might be picking up a pixel on the side just to have later down the road but of course a unlocked version.....
The only way I will give up my Note 7 is if they make a mandatory recall and will not provide service for the phone. In my opinion there is no other phone on the market with the same options and styling.

AT&T Will Let Customers With Replacement Galaxy Note 7s Swap Out Their Devices

Bad news for Samsung keeps on coming
AT&T will allow any of its customers with replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices to swap them out for a different smartphone, the company tells The Verge. The move follows Sprint's decision to let its customers return replacement Note 7s for a device from a different manufacturer on the heels of a replacement Note 7 catching fire on a plane earlier this week. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has opened an investigation into the fire.
At this rate it's likely that Verizon and T-Mobile won't be too far behind in offering to swap out replacement Note 7 devices. With the uncertainty around the safety of the Note 7, offering a full exchange is the easiest way to ease the worries of consumers until the CPSC completes its investigation. If you're an AT&T or Sprint customer, you can take your replacement Note 7 back to the carriers' respective retail stores and exchange the devices for another smartphone of your choosing.

Interesting. Not sure what i would do. So far i am enjoying my replacement note 7. If it comes to it i guess i will have to make a decision but i need more info before making that move. Its a shame, Samsung makes good stuff, its unfortunate they are having these issues. We shall see

I just feel this phone will be at the bottom.of the pile like a non flagship budget. For cases, accessories, updates ect... . Not many people are on board with the note 7, if there is no recall not many will be on board with all the bad press. So why would anyone put any effort or invest money/more products into the note 7. Speaking. Of, we will surely not see a functional.curved glass SP. In my line of work tempered sp is a must. One reason why I may go v20, same.screen real estate as the note 7 but not curved so SP will actually stay on.
The note 7 and bogo deal was the only reason I upgraded and added a phone to my plan. Samsung had no other device I want so now I may get screwed out of the bogo and have to pay more each month than I had originally planned and I can't take back my note 5 now, which I gave to our functioning disabled son
Its absolutely tragic that this is happening. I really wanted this device to be my go to for the next couple of years. Its my first phone since the Note 4 was released and its a beast! I guess in the race to create a flagship like this Samsung has finally cut too many corners. It seems to me that the inherent design of the battery and the chassis just aren't optimal. They should have spent a bit more time on the battery enclosure and possibly reduced the battery capacity slightly to compensate for the tight tolerances. Im not even really sure that would have done anything to help. But anyhow, I think the rest of the community will probably feel the pain. I have already started looking at other devices, leaning (for the first time in 8 years) towards another iPhone. Or I can go to the Pixel xl. Everything other than the Note 7 released this year has been such a let down though.

For sure! Yikes, I believe that steam and heat actually causes the rubber seals to loosen a bit. Its one of the only ways that you can actually get water damage on these devices other than taking them too deep in the water. Sorry bud, Im sure you can still give it back though when/if you decide too. lol
So it's not normal for the loudspeaker to sound like crap after? It seems like it's back to normal now.
