Did anyone else have an issue getting the “Free Bumper” from Google when ordering your Nexus 4?
My wife ordered my Nexus 4 for Father’s Day a few weeks ago, maybe a few days or so after the promotion started. I didn't get a bumper with it so she called and was basically told it was a “while supplies last” promotion and they have run out. Yet, they are still advertising the promotion and seems like they have plenty of bumpers in stock on the Play store.
What’s the deal Google?! Seems pretty shady to me.
I got mine in the same package as with my N4. No trouble at all. Don't know what happened for you.
Ordered mine last Saturday and got it today, white with bumper.
No problems here man. Got mine about 2 weeks ago.

I'd send an email and/or call again and politely explain the issue. Let them know that plenty of people ordered after you and received the free bumper so you see no reason why you shouldn't have received one. Tell them you'll be glad to provide information showing you purchased the phone during the promotion as well.
Chances are you will just get the run around but in my experience being overly polite in these situations works out in your favor. Good luck!
The free bumper is just for the white nexus 4 in the US right?

So get this, I called Google last night and they flat out refused to just send me a bumper even though we purchased the Nexus 4 within the promotion period. They claim there was no availability when they shipped my phone even though they have stock now and there are plenty of other people who ordered around the same time I did who got theirs, basically I think they just screwed up my order and don’t want to admit it. So I escalated to a supervisor and he still refused to simply send me a bumper, HOWEVER, he said I could remorse return my Nexus 4 and they will cover the return shipping and waive the restock fee and I can just order another phone! Why not just send me the stupid $20 bumper Google!? This route is going to cost you waaay more than if you were to just ship me a bumper! What the heck!?

Nope, came in the same box.
Got it yesterday.
It's not that big of a deal. I don't care that I didn't get one.

I had the same issue and got the same response. It seems to be some kind of policy of theirs that you have to return the device to get a new one with the bumper, which sucks but i guess we have to deal with it.

Did you guys ever get a positive resolution to this? I'm in the same boat and being given the same runaround only Google decided to end the latest promo overnight so it makes no sense that play support is telling me to return and reorder the phone.

So I'm one of the people that are going to buy the 16gb on day 1. But what I'm worried about is what happens if all of them has a major flaw? Will google fix this or will we just have to live with it? Not software but hardware.

return it for exchange or refund just like normal!
Sent from my XT890
You can replace it if you ordered it from Google or send it in for an RMA with LG. Obviously, the easiest and quickest choice is just exchanging it for a new one. As far as I know, Google is very good about exchanges in the event of a hardware problem.
However, if you order it from a different source Google won't be able to do this. This happened to me with the Nexus 7. I ordered from GameStop and mine had some minor LCD light bleed which was mostly just annoying. Me, being a perfectionist, couldn't handle it. I didn't feel like waiting for weeks if GameStop didn't have a replacement available immediately, so I called Google not really expecting them to do anything for me (they certainly didn't owe me anything). They gave me the news I expected (RMA through ASUS) and I went on. Luckily GameStop allowed me to keep my defective Nexus 7 while I was waiting for the replacement, so all was well.
Anyway, that story didn't hold much relevance unless you plan on ordering from another source. But, yes, there are exchanges through Google and apparently they're fairly simple.

Hey,
Is anyone be able to get replacement from playstore, if so is it pending or did you got the tracking number?
Since I got the device has a cracked close to the camera, I place a replacement yesterday and still didn't got my tracking number its showing as pending. When I place replacement order the CSR told me that they have enough device for replacement. Today I called them whats going on, and they are telling me that they don't have stock so its basically we are in backorder.
Can anyone clarify this.
Thanks
that sounds like you're SOL buddy... sorry
I don't know what the status is. My camera LED does not work, so I phoned in early Wednesday morning (5:30 a.m. EST) and arranged for a replacement. The email acknowledgment I got said "Less than one week" for "Estimated ship." I haven't heard anything further.

so no tracking number or anything, did you try to call them. cause we have only 15days for replacement
I requested a replacement on Tuesday, and it's still pending for me. I'm not complaining though, since I still have my Nexus 4. I don't really care if it takes 2 or 3 weeks for the replacement to get to me, as long as it's fulfilled, I'm a happy camper.
I requested a replacement Tuesday night because there is a small crack or hole in the backlight that looks like dead pixels but it's under the LCD and I got the same ships in less than a week but it's still pending in the play store

My call on Wednesday requesting an RMA exchange was less than 24 hours after I received the phone, well within 15 days. Anyhow, this is a warranty issue, which means I have a year, not 15 days.
If I haven't heard anything by middle of next week, I'll follow up with them, given the "less than a week" timeframe they quoted.

Isn't the warranty through lg? Meaning you will have to send it to lg for repair or replacement? Going through Google during the 15 day period let's you replace it through Google.
Ifvit is before the 15 days why is it a warranty issue?

Beats me. All I know is it's a defective unit, I called up Google support, and they're sending me a replacement. If at some point in the future Google tells me I need to talk to LG about defects, I'll talk to LG.
at least with the nexus 7, the benefit of buying from Google Play rather than buying from a store was that the play orders would be managed by Google if there was any warranty issues, whereas the store orders were managed by ASUS themselves.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you place an order for a replacement unit, RMA, Google places a hold for the full price of the phone on your account, in this case 384 dollars. Until the defective phone is returned, correct?
If so, are you guys with RMAs going to have an extra 384 taken out until you received the replacement.
I have a defective unit, my earpiece does not work, but I don't have an extra 384 dollars to let Google borrow while they send me a replacement unit god knows when.
Also, are RMAs brand new in box? Or refurbished units?

So from what I understand Google has a stash of N4s set aside for RMA purposes, what if I was to RMA my current N4, but not actually return it. I know they will just charge me for a new one if I don't return the current one, but is that all, i.e. no black listing the IMEI #.

Don't be a douche, and don't be an idiot. If you tried that, you'd be screwing over those waiting for legitimate RMAs, and would likely get charged LG's sticker price, which is higher than Google sells it for (as evidence by prices in UK retailers). Wait in line like everyone else.

No he wouldn't. Google places a $349 (for the 16gb) authorization hold on your account until they get the replacement back. I know this because I still have the auth hold on my account, my replacement arrived on Friday and the RMA is sealed and waiting to get sent back on Monday.
Friend of mine offered me 300 for my Nexus 4 that I am sending back due to dirt stuck under the screen. I plainly told him no. I am sending it back first thing Monday morning when my RMA replacement arrives.
I don't feel like jerking Google around.
I'm screwing no one, google screwed me when they only managed to process one of the many units I tried to order on launch day, had they processed what I wanted I wouldn't be doing this.

I was, on Thursday
So I dropped my nexus and the screen shattered. While it turns on and looks fine through the cracks, you can't actually use it. So, my question is, has anyone actually sent in their phone to have it replaced by LG? If so, how much did it cost? So far I've found places locally that will do it for $200+, which at that point I might as well just buy another phone.

It costs around 150 from what I heard. You can try calling google directly to get a better price maybe.
Yeah, I tried calling google and they just told me to call LG. I called LG but of course there wasn't anyone available right now to give me a quote on the cost. While searching Google I found one person who mentioned that they will replace the screen up to a cost of $100 and if it's over that they ship it back "totaled" without repairing it.
I was just curious if anyone had actually gone through this process.
I had mine replaced and it cost me $140. I actually got a refurbished unit, so they actually didn't replace the screen. The device I got was in mint condition and runs great. I had to ship mine to LG (which was in Fort Worth, TX). The turn around time was about 7 days, but since I live in Dallas, shipping to and from LG was next day. If you have any other questions about the process let me know.

Same here, $140. Except I got my phone back.
I'm not sure why you would've gotten a refurbished device just for a screen replacement though.

Ok, $140 isn't that bad...more than I'd like to spend but it's less than having it done locally. Did you just call up LG and have them give you an address to ship it to?

I first called Google to get the number for LG, then called them directly. Make sure when you call LG you have your IMEI number because they can't process the return without it.
Or go to LG's site and fill out an RA request.
You can also email an LG rep from here or call if you'd prefer.

I did have a bumper case on mine, but it wasn't dropped. I tripped in a parking lot while holding my phone in one hand. So when I fell, I naturally put my hands down to break my fall and that they did. Also shattered my screen.
Hey guys,
I previously had a black 16GB Nexus 4 that was perfect in terms of build quality. I switched to the white 16GB version when that came out, and am having some problems with my device. The biggest issue is that there's a dark vertical line running down the left hand side of the screen (attached picture). The phone is also creaky on all four corners of the device when I press down on it. Also, on the left side of the phone, one of the clips isn't properly seated and you can see a bit of a gap. Is this something that Google will replace my device for? The screen defect is pretty annoying. Anyone have experience with Google's RMA process? I can't be without a phone... How much money do they put a hold on your credit card for if you do an advance RMA (cross ship)? Thanks for your help.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I would RMA it. They cover it.
Full price is held on card.
Thanks for reply. I think I'll definitely be RMAing it. I just hope they kept some extra white models for RMA purposes, because I believe the white has been sold out on the Google Play store

Just ask them when you call in for the RMA. If they don't , get a refund.
Just so u guys know the process. I called in and explained issue. He walked me thru some basic troubleshooting. Last thing he wanted me to do was a factory reset. So he emailed me instructions how to do it and told me to call/email back if the factory reset fixed it. If it didn't fix it, he would have the device replaced. So I emailed him back after I did the factory reset (even tho I knew it wouldnt fix anything) telling him it didn't fix the issue. He then emailed back saying he was forwarding my case to a specialist who would help get me a replacement device. Waiting to hear from the specialist now. Should hear something by tomorrow. If they're out of the white model nexus 4's, I wonder if I can get them to upgrade me to the HTC One or Galaxy S 4 Google Play Editions (since their both white)... Hey, a man came dream right? I'll be documenting the RMA process in the thread for the benefit of others in the future.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
You can never know, maybe they will upgrade it for free. good luck, and thanks for sharing the procedure with us.
My screen died, first it wouldn't respond to touch and before I could factory reset the whole phone died, can't get to fastboot and it isn't recognized in adb. My new phone will be here Monday and I don't know if they will go good on the warranty as the defective one has an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery on it. Only time will tell! I'll let you guys know when the dust settles. As for the dark line on your screen, I bought a TV that had the same thing and they had to replace it..I think they said it was the display monitor that had went.

Received my prepaid shipping label to ship my phone back to Google. Strangely, I didn't request an advance RMA, but they put in for an advance RMA anyway, so I had to give my credit card which they put an authorization for the full amount of the phone. What if I didn't have the money? Whatever happened to doing a *normal* RMA? Where they wait to receive the defective item, inspect it, and then send the replacement device, no credit cards needed. So I don't like that they give no option except advance RMA. Not everyone has an extra $350 laying around.
Another point of concern. It said in the RMA instructions to keep the charger that came with the phone because the replacement phone doesn't come with a charger. I emailed them back about this and asked why the new phone doesn't come with a charger, because NEW phones come with chargers. I asked so I could make sure that I'd be receiving a new phone. That would be a bunch of crap if they hold your credit card for $350+ and send you a refurb phone.
Looks like they still have white Nexus 4's in stock for RMA purposes. It stated on the RMA page "16GB white nexus 4 with bumper". So much for lucking out and having them upgrade me hehe.
I'll keep updating as more information becomes available.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Very strange..I specifically asked about refurbished devices in our emails back and forth and they assured me that they only send out new devices. I also emailed them about the charger and was told to return my old one as I would be getting a new one as well? I hope for our sake that what they told me was true..mine will be here tomorrow 07/29/13. I'll report back when I receive it.

I have yet to receive a reply to my email asking why I shouldn't return my charger, since new devices come with them. Good to hear that you got a reply saying to return the charger because you'd be getting a new one. I think what might be going on is that what they send is simply a boilerplate copy/paste email. All signs *seem* to point to us getting new devices. I wonder if we'll be getting new bumper cases as well? Did you return the bumper with your phone?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
No, I kept my bumper as I'm sure they won't replace it..lucky I ordered two sets of best skins screen protectors as well because I doubt they would reimburse you for that either

Guess what... Replacement device has developed the same grey vertical line (left hand side) issue. After further research, seems many others are experiencing this issue. I doubt another RMA will fix it, as I'm starting to believe it's a characteristic/defect of the phone/display's design.
