GS4 Running slowly, keyboard missing keys, and just other miscues - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hey Guys
So I am coming up from an HTC Evo 4G..(not LTE) so you already know this phone is a come up for me. I noticed, however, that the phone is running a tad slowly. Here are a few examples, maybe you all could help me out.
First - when I put in my password pin the phone will lag and catch up when I press OK. Now, technically, this is not that much of an issue because the phone opens up when I press OK...but to see that lag is a little disconcerting.
Second - if I am typing some messages the keyboard will miss certain inputs in my typing. Now maybe I am typing a little too fast, but, come on? I know I am touching those keys... I am using SmartKeyboard but I figure that could be an issue too.
I notice that my ram climbs up pretty high. I clear all my programs...but still. Anyway to remove this bloatware?
Finally is there a root out yet?
Thanks guys. Sorry for the litany of questions

Either debloat for yourself or flash a custom ROM.

There is a root available for the phone as well as a stock ROM that is entirely free of bloatware located here.
The lag may, in fact, be the keyboard you're using. The most popular keyboard of choice - and for good reason - is SwiftKey; have you given this keyboard a shot? I use it myself and type extremely fast and it keeps up better than my iPhone 4S ever did.

You can try to uninstall most of the bloatware apps but a lot of them aren't able to be uninstalled which is why people root and head to a custom ROM.
Sooner or later you'll find yourself flashing AOSP ROMs for a complete Vanilla stock Android experience and a performance increase and flashing often.
It's an addiction, I caution you my friend!

o yes, i understood that. but I just don't want to brick this thing...I'm a little nervous about that

its kinda hard to brick any samsung galaxy phone.. u would have to do thing really stupid for a brick

100% stock here and using the stock samsung keyboard I also can validate the lag and skippy issues. The chief editor over at phone dog goes over and over about this. So its kind of a known issue. I am coming from the s3 and it was smoother when it came to typing and multitasking. I end freezing and dropping frames a lot I am hoping samsung comes up with a fix.

I dont see a bug thread so this is the closet thing. Anyone have problems with youtube top bar? Its starts normal then I switch from landscape to portrait and the top bar seems to reflect different parts of the app. Since you guys dont like bloatware are there any sprint apps you actually like?
Heres a screenshot.

What has root done for you?

What have you done since you've gotten root access?
I rooted, and the only thing I have done is remove apps I don't want.
Same here, removed apps for now.
I look forward to a good custom ROM in the future as there are some aspects of the MT4G Sense I would rather not have.

All about the custom roms and kernels. Root was the prerequisite. Now that we have it developers can start working on the real stuff, as in the "life or death" stuff everyone is so excited about. I'll take it you're new to android/rooting? Wait and see, great things to come

Not only removing stock apps. It helps u bring a sense of originality & style to ur device with the full customation ability that Root access provides. In addition to that, making your device run smoother & faster & not being an eager slave to the creators of the smartphone world. In easier terms, not always waiting for the things u anticipate for that ur phone is already suppose to do. I was a sceptic at first, but once u decide to take that turn towards rooting u will be very satisfied.

I'm as bad a spec geek as the next, but I've yet to find any reason to OC over 1ghz on any recent phone I've had.
I would only OC when I was trying to pull the best benchmark and then back to 1ghz for me on my Evo...
Rooting
I wasn't aware that there was a root for this phone so quickly. Where is it located so that I can remove all this crap that I will never ever want to use. Thanks. Also What is mobile defense.
So far the only thing I've really done with root was change the Lock/Unlock sounds. I'm a huge Metal Gear Solid fan so now whenever I lock or unlock the phone I hear the codec open or close sound.
whats the easiest way to remove said bloatware again? titanium?

This information must be shared, Snake!
I'm guessing Root Explorer would do the trick? I've never looked into doing that before. Mind sharing the location and/or the sound?
Anyway, removed bloat, used Setcpu, gave Juice Defender root access. And @flopie, mobile defense is an app that can track your phone if you ever lose it. Shows the gps location on a map at their web page. You can remotely lock it down or wipe the phone and sd card if you have to.

Anyone else getting FCs when launching the web browser?
i hate sense, is there any way to kill it with froyo? i like the look of the stock ui better.
Only option is to download a 3rd party launcher like ADW or LauncherPro. Deleting the Sense launcher would cause a bunch of problems considering the framework depends on Rosie if I'm not mistaken.

I agree; the thread title is pretty clear as to the topic of discussion.
Loaded it on the wife's Slide. Download speeds from HTC were truly absurd; took 3 hours to get the necessary files. I flashed chiefz version of this when I was still using the Slide ... I found the leaked ROM to be sluggish compared to 2.1 stock; I've found the 2.2 official update to be virtually identical to chiefz version - a bit sluggish. I definitely like having the wireless "hotspot" on her un-rooted slide; helps to share our two 5gb data plans wirelessly. I tried to move a few large apps to sd (Froyo a2sd) and apps that should be able to be moved were not able to be moved and I'm unsure if that's due to not having root. HTC sync and bluetooth have turned on by themselves after I disabled them in settings ... very odd. My wife doesn't seem care one way or the other but I'm a root user so I have a different take on things. The bottom line is it keeps the system as it always has been and adds some useful features. It appears some bugs were fixed from the release notes but I have a suspicious feeling a whole new set of bugs may crop up. With all the time that has passed I believe HTC could have done a better job. Hoping the wife is is happy with it because I will never hear the end of it if she prefers the old stock ROM. Fingers crossed ...

[Q] Most complete CM7 based ROM?

Sorry for not spending a huge amount of time researching this, guys. It's not for me.
I'm a flash-a-holic and my friend has your phone model and needs a new ROM installed on it. So I get one shot at this. I won't be "supporting" her phone and flashing nightlies all the time.
CyanogenMOD's site says that CM7 is officially supported, so that's what I'm considering flashing for her. It looks like there are a few threads based on it and many of the dev's have since discontinued support.
Can you guys point me to the most complete/stable CM7 based ROM out there?
I don't want CM9 or CM10 based ROM's because based on what research I have done, those still have some important things broken. Like camcorder or Netflix or 4g, etc.
This needs to be a "Flash once and be done with it" type of deal.
DISCLAIMER: I'm not after the "most popular" or "coolest" ROM. Because I know all ROM's are a WIP and Dev's improve on things daily. I just want the CM7 build that has the least amount of items broken.

reloaded
Reloaded. Its super smooth. If you only have one shot and wont be supporting, I'd recommend reading into cod tweaks. The updated settings should be linked somewhere in the thread.
And also go to advanced setting/display and make sure screen on/off is checked. Without it, you may have issue waking phone from time to time.
That's about the only "issue" I've ran into on reloaded. Fix that and its smooth sailing out of the box.
If she wants the ics look at all, download Holo launcher (free). Paired with the built in ics cm7 theme it'll look strikingly close.
Good luck
I'll second that. Below is a screenshot from my phone, and I'd say it is indeed striking. Yes, this is reloaded:

First of all questions go in the q&a (that's question and answer) section. That's usually where you put questions that you want answers to
Second you should search around and notice that any thread asking which rom is best gets shut down asap as its all opinion and you should figure out on your own and make your own opinion.

Anyone tried "Lagfix" that enables Trim for LG G2?

Guys,
Anyone tried this app on LG G2 D802?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix&hl=en
This enables TRIM that supposed to come with Android 4.3 update and should help with Lag issues.
Some one tried?
can it harm the device?
Thanks!

I have bought the premium of this long ago, for my old/other devices.
Please read up on which kind of LAG it should help.
LG G2 is not lagging or rather when its lagging, its due to the throttling or something else.
TRIM won't help. Won't do anything for you. Kinda would like that the placebo effect goes away which some ppl experience on other devices. Not saying it might not help. But mostly it's really just placebo. Lets say 1 in 100 000 specific devices under specific circumstances it helps... and not LG G2 .
(Not yet)
Android is out for more years, lets say after 5 they introduce TRIM and now every device and every one needs it? Wanna tell me that every device was lagging the past years? < @op This was not for you, but for the defenders that will pop out saying that TRIM is the almighty savior of high end devices.
You do not need TRIM. (Again not yet)
I used it on my Nexus 7, prior to 4.3. Works good on some devices that have poor i/o over time. I doubt it makes a difference on the G2, we'll most likely have a 4.3 or higher rom with built in trim before you would see any issues with i/o lag.
I must say. Installed lagfix on g2, everything being indeed smoother and seems as much less sttutering and scroll lags.
well the fixes you seek are not really there, android itself laggs due to the way it is designed.

From my understanding of trim , you should still see a performance gain no matter what. This gain becomes more apparent as you use and fill your a device.

Are you referring to the lag and stuttering issue? I don't understand how trim wouldn't help a heavily used G2 on maintaining IO performance over time.

What I said and meant is that in 99 % cases TRIM is only a placebo.
And in case of LG G2 it's 99.99999% placebo.
Look 5 years phones were fine without TRIM. Now suddenly it's a magic cure?( For a problem that 99% of devices didn't have?)
Even Google knows it's not like that at all. If it was, don't worry there would be more advertising behind it.
Stop reading into the technical details of it. As I said not my first device. Bought the premium one long ago.
Real life usage different from paper.
When you could see some benefits of TRIM on LG G2 we will have Android 5.5

Custom roms and lag speed for an artist

Hello, I have a GN10.1 2014 and I was an ex owner of a GN10.1 2012, my question is quite simple, does the custom roms actually get rid of the lag when you draw ? I will be more specific, I didn't had any kind of lag on my old GN and now with the new screen (double the pixels) I have to use the 2x mode to draw smoothly... which mean that it's like drawing with the old one.
That occur with Layerpaint and Layerpaint HD, I own these 2 on the old one and I have to say I barely use them now because of that responsiveness. Sketchbook is cooler but of course (and I guess you noticed) it's zoomed in.
Can anyone confirm that it's getting better by installing a custom rom specifically to draw ? I don't want to lose the warranty (knox), because here now they check if you installed a custom rom or not...
Thanks in advance !

if it helps, i am on a custom rom and no lag with snote that i have experienced (have only had this a few weeks). I was recently makin a list of the plugins and various settings for my n64 emulator, for each game i have, and i had both snote and the emulator multiwindowed to make the task easier. Both apps ran well and no lag. Games were still playable and snote very responsive.

I have just read the posts corresponding to the ROM and Kernel you are using... And I'm convinced! I should install this on my tablet.
But first... Can you please tell me if I should install the kernel first and then the ROM, or is it the other way around?
I don't want to make any mistakes.
Thanks in advance!
You have to turn off the force gpu rendering, ull see a notable change in how smooth it is. Custom rom would help, gets rid of the crapware which eats up system resources and slowing down processor speed overall.

Flash rom see how you like then test out kernels you might want. You want to know the rom is working for you first then you can jump into adding other stuff, you know.
