[Q] Completely lost all audio, media plays super fast - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have been using this (MIUI v5 Nexus 4 ยท [3.6.15] - Updated [June 16, 2013] Working LTE) for the past few days and all was fine... till all of a sudden I got a call and could not hear the caller... I thought it was the no audio/tmobile issue, but all was fine before? Now I come to find out that I have no audio at all and videos/music files play as if they are in fast forward (with no audio).
I tried backups to this rom and others and the problem persists. Tried reflashing back to this and to others and the problem is still there, absolutely no audio and fast video/music playback. Anyone has any idea what I triggered and how it can be fixed?
I just finished restoring back to stock and still no audio/fast video playback. Has anyone experienced this... or is this phone a gonner.

Did you make sure to wipe /system /data etc when you went back to restore?

Yes of course... I'm wondering if this is a freak accident... But it must be a software issue... Too much of a coincidence that media plays fast along with the no audio issue

Music and Video player "skips"

For some reason my music and video players "skip". It's not really skipping, just kinda pausing for a millisecond, like there isn't enough memory to run it. I know there is, so why is it doing this?
Anyone else with this issue?
i have not noticed this. Are you using the stock players?
It does it weather I use the stock players or cubed or act 1. Doesn't matter which player, it still seems to happen anyway...

yup same thing happens to mine...im going to do a factory reset and then transfer my music album by album (as appose to dumping all albums at once) and if it continues I'm exchanging my Vibe for another at the t-mobile store.....but if anyone had any info plz let me know...is there a fix?...
I've noticed this on occasion as well but wasn't sure if they were just bad mp3s.
Yeah, if it's happening on 3 different apps, that is very odd.
Curious, on an app like neocore, what was your fps?
Anyone else experience this? this is kind of a bigy for me
Okay, I've determined that it's an app causing it. I uninstalled everything but 3 or 4 apps and the problem has ceased. I'll have to reinstall them one at a time to determine which was causing it, but when I do I'll let you know.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
When you do, will you pm me? Would love to add it to the sticky to prevent others from having an issue.
Why the need for so many players?
I was just experimenting with Cubed, I like the stock player just fine, and act 1 plays more formats and has more options than the stock video player, been using that since my G1.
Anyway, I uninstalled everything but compass, txtpad lite and xda and the problem appears to have ceased. I've now reinstalled HTC ime mod but haven't tested the player yet.

The stock video player has played everything for me so far... pretty impressed.
Have you tried RockPlayer?
noticed the skip issue when i installed the music mod from the N1 CM5 build. made things really buggy and it 'skipped' a lot. not sure if it was related to the random freezes that required a battery pull, but that and lots of problems started after i installed music mod. once i factory reset they went away.

Are you listening to this using bluetooth stereo? If so, turn off your wifi.
I continue having this problem when listening to music through a the 3.5 mm cable (like using headphones or when i have a two way 3.5mm plug that i hook up to my car)...any one else having this problem?.. but it doesnt seem to have a problem when on speaker...couldnt run the most elaborate test but it didnt skip through the two songs that i tested
Well, it would seem that both of these apps cause this "skipping" problem:
Weather and toggle widgets
Turtle photoframe
Both are widgets, and every time I uninstall them the problem seems to go away. Maybe its just certain widgets or a problem with touchwiz causing this. I'll keep testing.

i also am experiencing this problem. it not only happens when playing music from the sd card or device, but even on pandora i notice it skipping in the same manner it does when playing mp3s.

[Q] YouTube HD playback constantly buffering

I didn't want to make a thread for this specific issue but after searching I can't seem to find a definitive answer!
Does anyone else suffer from constant buffering with HD playback on the YouTube app and is this something that can be fixed??
Firstly I have a 60Mb/3Mb connection with a good strong wireless signal. We have numerous wireless devices around the house and none of them seem to be affected by this problem. I can have my Nexus 7 within 1 metre of my router and i'm lucky if I can get through 10 seconds of HD playback without it buffering, my laptop however will happily stream 1080p whilst i'm sitting in the garden!?
The Transformers movie on the play store has no problems at all, it plays smoothly no matter where I am in the house. It can even handle me skipping through sections and resumes playback almost instantly. I'm convinced the problem is with YouTube but don't really know how/if i can fix it. I have tried clearing the cache, reverting to a previous version and completely removing it and reinstalling yet the problems persist. SD playback is vastly better but it still has it's problems from time to time.
My device is completely stock running 4.1.2 (upgraded earlier today OTA). Apart from this issue I love the Nexus and don't really have any desires to root at present. I'm 31 with 2 children and my own business so I don't have the time to put into learning it all and keeping up with everything, 10 years ago things would have been very different!
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this was one of the main reasons I bought the tablet.
I have the same problem. It's very embarrassing when you try to show off the tablet to friends :-\

I also have experienced this problem. It only happens with the YouTube on the N7. It doesn't happen on my iPhone or my laptop. I wish there was some way to fix it.

i have the same problem it really sucks
Look at post #267. A combination of SmoothROM and Bricked Kernel, both of which I've used in the past and are great, resolved the issue for one user.

It's somewhat comforting knowing i'm not suffering with this alone. . . This can't be right though surely!?
Whilst trying to fix the issue last night I did manage to stream a full HD 10 min video with no buffering, something that hasn't happened for a while. Strangely it worked right after using the speedtest.net app to test my connection. I don't even know if it's possible for one app to affect the other but the same video had buffering issues minutes before I ran the test. It's probably just a well timed coincidence but I thought it was worth mentioning.
I guess now we have to hope that Google get their act together and fix the site/app. They certainly receive enough in ad revenue, which always play flawlessly

I'm on stock 4.1.2 after a full reinstall, I can't recreate the issue. Out of curiosity can you go to settings > apps > all > youtube and clear the cache, does it help at all?

It's no different after clearing the cache unfortunately, that's one of the first things I tried. I'm guessing the next step is a full reinstall too. I'll have to look into backup options without root, which i'm guessing is pretty limited?
First world problems eh?
Same Problem. I noticed the only way to get the vids to move is to toggle between hd and regarding when it freezes up. Very annoying to say the least. I just use the browser now. No probs.

I thought that I have problem with my router. Guess not. BTW I found "solution" which works for me. As soon as video starts buffering, turn off the screen, then on, unlock and press play on video and enjoy your video without buffering.

no solution, but the same problem. Bugs the hell out of me. My workaround has been to switch to SD which of course is a bit crap. When I get within reach of a wifi connection I'll try clearing cache/uninstalling updates etc. Not keen on rooting and installing new Rom/kernel as a solution to be honest.

Running 4.2 now makes no difference I'm afraid. Cleared cache and data, left updates. Still buffers uncontrollably. That said, the tip earlier tint he thread of turning off the screen, turning it back on and unlocking, then playing the video worked very well. It played HD video for 3 minutes straight with no buffering. Then a small/short buffer (acceptable) and now buffering again for the remained of the video @ 7 minutes. does this lend any information to lead to a root cause? Willing to work for a solution .
I wanted to update my situation seeing as I started this thread.
I recently moved home and changed internet provider and all of my issues with YouTube have gone away. I have gone from a 60Mb down / 3Mb up fibre optic service with Virgin Media (where I had nothing but issues). Now on a 4Mb down / .3Mb up ADSL service with Sky.
HD YouTube videos play flawlessly from everywhere I want to use my Nexus! It's not just YouTube though as pretty much everything that works from the internet is running a lot faster on my device now. I wish I could offer more of a solution but I can only say that I don't think it's a problem with the Nexus 7/YouTube app.
Yep. I found solution in some other thread. You gotta change modem or update firmware on it. I called my ISP requesting modem firmware update, they came and put new modem instead. Even better. Wish I knew about this solution before I bought new router. Oh well...at least now I have dual band so its not total waste of money.
same
So was the problem your modem, router or actual ISP? While my VDSL2 modem is capable of being a router, I have it setup in pass-through (bridge) mode to my DLINK DIR-655 router which handles everything. What exactly in the firmware is causing the slow-down just for youtube on the N7 (and not other computers)?

4.4 Electronic/buzzing noise during audio playback

Ever since updating to Kit Kat, I've been randomly getting these electronic/buzzing noises when playing audio (speaker and headphone - all audio apps e.g Poweramp, Tunein Radio)
It almost always happens if I interact with the phone while audio is playing. If I leave the phone alone during audio playback, it'll happen as well but not as frequent
I am a constant ROM flasher. This has happened on various builds of PSX, Purity, and Vanilla Rastakat. Changing kernels doesn't fix this either
Anybody else experience this?
Google only brought up this: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=62715
Not sure if that is my exact problem
Maximum Volume that started to vibrate?
and did you flashed any audio tweaks?
Not sure about the maximum volume + vibrate part
But no audio tweaks. Full wipes in between flashing different ROMs.
I wish you'd never mentioned this, because now I hear it all the time. I thought it was someone else's phone doing the buzzing, bit no it's definitely mine

It's not so much buzzing but random electronic noises.
Don't think we're experiencing the same thing. This almost makes playing music impossible to listen to. You definitely would have noticed it a long time ago if you suffer from it
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
It's especially noticeable while charging. I could be that the audio hardware is poorly shielded, so that charging current and even CPU activity can be heard through headphones. It's not noticeable unless things are quiet though.
Got the same issue on and off, switching from paid Poweramp to free Shuttle Music Player (hurts, cause I love Poweramp) has reduced the electronic distortion noise to stuttering and crackling here and there. Unfortunately, none of Poweramps's buffer size/thread priority/... settings did anything to lessen this problem.
Could not find anything that's a possible cause for this - regardless of the phone being used/charged/active/... these stutters keep appearing.
Any more ideas how to solve these problems other than waiting for Google to release a fix/update?
I have had this issue as well. I did some searching around and other phones had this problem as well. It turned out that they just had to disable LTE and it went away. I thought that was silly, but tried it anyway. I had been using LTE constantly so whenever I changed roms or kernels, I still enabled it and still had buzzing. After seeing the posts, I disabled LTE and the buzzing went away.
This isn't the fix I would like. I would like to still be able to use LTE, but watching videos or listening to music drives me nuts with it enabled.

Thanks for the input, albeit, the N4 wasn't shipped with LTE enable in the radio afaik.
...at least mine wasn't and I have never messed with LTE as a result.
However, I also got the feeling, that the audio stuttering has to do with the N4 radio's activity. Too bad, that switching on airplane mode while you're on the bus is not really a feasible workaround. I guess we'll have to wait either for an audiophile Dev fixing this in a custom Rom or for Google.
Confirmed, I have the same problem. Somehow I think it is linked to a custom kernel. It happens with hellscore, franco and matrix kernel for sure.
Sorry to bump up an old thread, but I have this problem too. Plus it stutters when I connect to wifi or when there is any processor intensive task going on... like doing anything while playing music (ugh). It's not the music because its the same problem whether im streaming on spotify or google play or playing local files. Any help appreciated
Yes I suffer from this issue as well. Both stock kernel, Franco kernel and matr1x kernel. Haven't tried changing ROM's yet. I thought it may have been a compatibility issue with viper4android, but after a full uninstall it still persists. I don't have anything LTE related on this device. It is random, and occurs with all audio, and videos also. I have noticed that when it happens on videos, the videos stutter a bit.

but I also have this issue. I'm on 5.0.2 (SimpleAOSP) with Matrix Kernel 14.5. I've had the same issues with Purity ROM and Hellscore Kernel before.

Video problems in kit kat

I have the v500 since christmas and i had no problem until i updated to kit kat. Before that, i watched my videos on bsplayer (its quite easy for using subtitles) or VLC, but now they both dont work well. Bsplayer is like slow, i mean, every 2 seconds the image stops for an instant and then continues, sound works without problem. In VLC it's the sound that stops working once every five minutes more or less, and for a few seconds. Sometimes, it also happens with some games. I alredy tried to restore the device and reinstalling the apps. Also deleting data files and cache of both apps.
Anyone having this problem and a solution??

Although I like BSPlayer and it works fine for me, I should point out that the default video player by LG works very well, reads subtitles just fine, and many codecs.
Did you clear app data or did you try uninstalling the apps and do a fresh install after the upgrade? I don't use either of those apps but i did have a problem after the upgrade with a couple of apps behaving badly until i cleared the app data and one required a reinstall.
doh, can you tell I was watching hockey when i wrote this? It looks like you already tried my suggestions...

I have problem with videos also.
I has started after changing soft to new soft 4.4.2.
While playing video (.mkv or .mp4), in defeault player or in MX Player, every few minutes, the picture is freezing for few seconds (audio is playing normally).
I have tried with different movies, always the same.
Before Android update everything was allright.

The same is happening to me as well. I'm considering following the thread in XDA about downgrading to original 4.2.2, but I'm worried about bricking the G Pad. It's the last option; i have tried with several different players, and after a factory reset to no avail.
It's a mess from LG, I can't understand how this could go under the radar during their testing phase.
Anyone has info about future updates?
this actually happens to me using the stock video player on kit kat. I been using mx player since then with no issues..
Hi,
I have exactly the same issue with videos on 4.4.2 whatever video player I am using. I updated my tablet as soon as I bought it, so I can not compare to 4.2.
I switched to the ART runtime (you need to enable Developer options to do so) a week ago and since then, video playing is smooth again.

Weird problems with nexus 6p

Hello.
My friend got a nexus 6p one year ago. One month ago he started to have problem. He was on stock rom
-First when he pressed the touch screen he heard small weird noises (hard to describe)
Then progressively :
-Speaker stopped working
-he could not play youtube video in you tube app : a weird error message (every time different) appeared. Gallery videos don't work as well
-But weirdly enough video played in the web browser including youtube videos, works, still without sound.
-He cannot make calls
-Jack plug doesn't works either, but he can use his Bluetooth headphones
We tried to install a custom rom (lineage os). We succeeded, but the above problem appeared again.
Then we flashed the factory image https://developers.google.com/android/images for nexus 6p. We also succeed but the above problem appeared again.
Thanks in advance for your help

The 6P has two speakers, and they wouldn't both fail at the same time. Sounds like he's damaged the phone somehow. The audio jack and speaker output both not working seem to back this up. I've seen the headphone jack part available separately, and there are guides available to replace it. Before flagging it as a hardware issue and opening the phone up, you want to make sure you wiped the phone completely by formatting the partitions (system, userdata, cache) and use the flash-all.bat included with the full Google image. There is a remote chance it is software related, but I doubt it.
You could always flash a custom kernel, use a kernel manager app to turn off the large core cpu and see if the problems go away. If they do its related to the build problem that causes the 6P to boot loop but those particular symptoms aren't familiar. It's still worth a try if flashing the stock image doesn't fix the problem.

Yes. You can always turn it back on but turning it off apparently fixes the permanent boot loop problem on the Nexus 6P. If the problems you are describing are related to the same build problem then turning it off might make them go away. Sometimes people's phones would start acting odd before going into the permanent bootloop. That phone could be on its way there.
this is purely a guess but the problem may be hardware related with the headphone jack. it could have a physical short somewhere. if thats the case the device may think a headphone jack is being used and wont play through speakers because its being told its plugged in. But wont play because of some physical short or an open.
