Stock recovery restore for Mac - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey guys,
Ive searched high and low and couldn't find anything other than this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317795
I recently restored from nandroid backup to stock TW and then did a factory reset.
Two things:
When I reboot the phone it still has the "Custom" and lock icon. I thought that doing a factory reset removed root. I cannot access titanium backup or SuperSU. Ideas?
Secondly and most importantly, I cannot boot into recovery. I use the power and volume up button and see it say "booting recovery" but then it automatically reboots and loads TW. I cannot use the method above because I do not have a PC to run odin. Any help would be much appreciated.
Edit: Forgot to mention I had TWRP installed.

Thanks so much. I downloaded heimdall. Is there a guide anywhere so I can make sure I am using it correctly. I read through the readme.txt but another guide couldn't hurt.
Also I cannot find a 32gb pit file. :crying:

That's correct. I have the stock TW running currently. Just no recovery.
Following the guide you sent i get "ERROR: Claiming Interface Failed" message when trying to get the pit file from my phone.

I am not aware heimdall is usable on the S4 yet. May be wrong. But, I have an iMac and when looking for an Odin replacement found no mention of it working on S4 and Adam mentioned it didn't. Don't remember the date of that comment though. People recommend using it when possible. Fortunately I have a pc available. Interested in knowing if anything has changed--

yeah, i am confused on it too. conflicting posts around web. saw on one site someone did use odin, but i was not sure how. seemed like all he had to do was use the factory usb cable. i wasn't buying that.
I think to be safe i would partition your mac with windows or use a friends for now.
At least until we get a good step by step from someone and confirmed by others.

I agree it is conflicting.. I would definitely give it a shot if my phone needed it.. That's kind of why I was steering him towards casual and try to reroot and reinstall a custom recovery.. I have a dual boot setup for windows 8 and Ubuntu so yeah it might be worth dual booting to use Odin if you have a copy of windows or using a friends computer

Thank a ton guys. I actually got stock recovery back late last night. I ended up plugging my s4 in and starting up kies and there happened to be the latest firmware available (because I had factory reset my phone). So i ran that and that restored recovery!. The phone is in proper working condition. The one last thing is the phone is still in custom status with the custom icon on the boot screen. Any ideas on how to remove it without being rooted?

haven't done anything with Keis, it messes with Android File Transfer
but, maybe Keis doesn't go far enough in flashing firmware like Odin would

I just wanted to make this perfectly clear: DO NOT use this kernel on a Verizon variant (almost impossible as it hasn't been officially released). This kernel is not signed and the bootloader will error out. You'll then be soft bricked until you flash a signed kernel in Odin.
Visual proof...first the signed unsecure kernel that allowed first root on the VZN SGS4 (notice the signature at the bottom):

Now your boot.img....which is missing the signature:
Again, please folks...do NOT flash this if you don't have an unlocked bootloader and an original kernel backup. Things could get REAL UGLY, REAL FAST.
Confirmed variants for various countries
SM-N9002 Dual Sim variant for Chinese Market

No, it's not. No need for it to be. International bootloader is not locked.

Since it's now VERY obvious you are not the author of this kernel, I will try to explain what I think happened. The person that created this kernel probably (and I say probably because I'm not going to waste the time and bandwidth to download 1.9GB of software I don't need) downloaded the leaked firmware and extracted the boot.img. He then made two minor adjustments that gave root access and repackaged the kernel. This probably took all of two minutes. I haven't looked at the original boot.img, but there's a 99% chance this gives root on a N9005.
There's a 50/50 chance it will work on any other N3 variant that doesn't have a locked bootloader. It depends entirely on how closely the keys match. In the US, this means Sprint, T-mobile, and sometimes AT&T. The S4's bootloader was locked by AT&T and I'm expecting the N3's to be as well. Verizon is almost always locked unless you buy a developer edition phone. A locked bootloader will fail to boot an unsigned kernel and the phone will be soft bricked.
This is one of the reasons unlocking a bootloader is so important to people that enjoy customizing their Android phones. It allows for custom recovery installation, custom kernel (which can then be unsigned), and custom ROM installation. Root can still be achieved with a locked bootloader, but it is much more difficult.

Korea Telecom (KT) Anyone?
Has anyone tried rooting the SM-N900K?
Does the galaxy3root dot com method work?
Terrified of trying this for fear that it will brick my device.
I'm trying to figure out why anyone would try this, when Chainfire has done his thing, is this to try and avoid the counters being triggered or something?
Edit: Scratch that.... just noticed the dates.... didn't realise how far down the forum list I'd scrolled in tapatalk haha.

[Q] Odin fails 4.3 bootloader issue

I am trying to install a 4.4.2 rom. It (phoenix) is on, but the baseband of my I9505 is still stuck at Mk2.
I followed steps to flash a new modem, but it reports failed every time.
I downloaded a stock 4.4.2 rom. It failed to install in odin. I was able to get back in recovery to use my nandroid, but I would really like to get this critter working with a 4.4.2 rom.
Is there a way to just update the bootloader?
Is there any drawback to being on the 4.4.2 BL instead of the 4.3 one I am on now?
Should I have a custom kernel that relaxes permissions or something?
Thanks tons.
Mike
Here is an image of the fail screen in Odin. I have tried 3.04, 07 and 09.

That file you are trying to flash is only for the old bootloader. I think you have the new bootlader so that file is not for you. If you want to update your modem, then pick a newer modem.

I thought the NC9 designation meant it was the right modem. Is there another version of that file that is for the new bootloader? I also believe I am on the new boot loader. I got the lovely knox 0x1 warranty result to go with it...
I will take a gander at the modem section again to see if I can find the ones that work with the new bootloader.
Went to sammobile to try to get an updated firmware for the device. I bought my USCC i9505 on ebay, for use in the us, but on sammobile I cannot choose USA as a place to check the firmware from. Is it only a international device? Is there a USCellular stock 4.4.2 I should be looking for? Thanks.

Just pick a modem from this thread.

I think the ones at the bottom are the latest.
ps why do you want to update the modem? If everything works, then it's ok. It's not that a newer modem is always better.

Thanks for the reply, I will give that thread a look. My problem is that when I move to a 4.4.2 rom I am not able to send text messages. I noticed after a few days of fighting with it that the rom I had was NB9 and the baseband of my phone was MK2.
I was under the belief that if I got my baseband to be NB9 I should have everything back in order.

I don't think its a problem with the modem. I had a similair problem once and that was caused by an incorrect "smsc number". That number is needed for sending sms. You can receive right?
I don't know how you can change it with the default sms app, but with an app like Go SMS Pro you can enter it manually.
Just google for: smsc number [insert provider here] see if that works.

I could not get into my S3's SMSC settings, but my two older phones appeared to be blank. Neither would give me anything when I hit refresh either.
I decided that since PagePlus uses Verizon that their SMSC was probably the one I needed, but that did not solve it either.
At the moment I am restoring my 4.3 stock rom. It works, so I will see if I can check the SMSC in there. Does it make any sense that I can restore a rom and have it work, yet when I put a new rom on it does not? I guess I did find several post detailing similar results back when IC was new. Maybe I am wrong about the page plus SMSC and that is my issue.
Thanks for the time and effort!
Mike
It could be a problem of the specific rom. Did you try other roms?
Does the stock rom flashing of 4.4.2 work now? If not, make sure you use the backport usb, not the front ones.

It is driving me batty that I cannot install a bloat free rom and have texting working... I think I am going to have to devote some energy into learning how to debloat this rom. I have Titanium Pro, so I think it is just a matter of taking some time.

I have tried 2 or 3 different roms. Phoenix lately and Golden eye before that.
I downloaded a stock 4.4.2, but it stuck on the Samsung screen. Scared me that I had her locked up tight... I had an issue yesterday with it not coming back from a nandroid too... I had a copy on my external card though and recovered from there as well.
I am not sure if I had a USCC stock 4.4.2 when I was doing that odin attempt. I asked on a teamuscellar page if there is a stock 4.4.2 for the s4 yet, but had not seen a reply yet.
Thanks for the tip on the back port. I will give that a go when I try again. My previous message said I was bailing.. but I am really not good at giving up. =) Thanks again!

Do you have this model?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272533
Because I see that U.S. Cellular has the Mk2 modem you talk about. Maybe you have the Galaxy S 4 (SCH-R970)? Could that be possible. Maybe that is why everything fails and why you can't text.

Yes, that is it. I am not sure how I started thinking I had the I9505 instead of the R970. I must have seen a post somewhere that linked them. I wonder how similar the hardware is. The roms I tried were sweet, just no texting.
Thanks so much for helping me solve this!

Thanks so much for helping me solve this!

I think this [ link ]is the stock image for the 970 that I tried in Odin and had it stay on the Samsung screen. I will download again, check the md5, and give it another go from a back port usb.
I did notice that the post you led me to was in the S4 i9500, I9505, etc forum. Is it possible my R970 is also a i9505?
Thanks,
Mike
I don't think you can use the i9505 roms.
After you flash your rom, try to do a wipe data from the stock recovery. I think it will boot then.

Worked like a champ! Thanks tons. Can't believe I spent more than a week thinking I had a different phone. Amazing I did not brick it with the different roms I threw on there. Texting and everything is groovy as can be!
Thanks again!

Same issue here. Can anyone confirm this works? The quote above seems a little fishy. Butchiboy's provided link (see his og post above) is an application for Mega and I don't want to have to create an account for something that might not work.
Its not an application for Mega. Mega is an app that you use to share apk's or files. Its like Google drive. You dont have to create an account its a app thats free in the playstore..nothing fishy about it..all you have to do is use your email and create a password for the app. Once you grab the file delete the app...just trying to help..but hey if you dont wanna use it then dont

If you check my profile you will see I am no noob..would not post something thats "Fishy"...many developers that post roms..apks..themes..use Mega its just a app from the playstore..this is the reason why I really dont visit XDA to often but rather a developers private site..instead of saying thanks or sending PM asking you tag something as "Fishy"..but when you try it and your back up and running I hope you enjoy your Tablet...oh I forgot to add you need to grab the boot file that allows you to root the T337A and flash that 1st..but I will not post that..just a heads up

Yeah mega is best cloud storage in my opinion..... other clouds have like 10gb space for free users but mega has 50 gb, and in e.g dropbox that much would cost money

I was running it stock with out any root changes and all the soddenly one day it just went blank and after rebooting the massage show up... any help is welcome.
The fix is for Lollipop. If the tablet was upgraded to Lollipop and someone tried to root it thats why that message appears. If its not Lollipop I dont believe it will work.

Why would you use a one click root? It's not very difficult to root using the actual method to obtain root. Props to the dev of one click root apps, but if u ask me, if you want root do it yourself. Less of a chance you will mess up and if you do manage to mess up you know what u did and that's just not the case with one click root apps.

They have a locked bootloader so custom kernels and custom recoveries simply aren't an option. So they have to use whatever works, which is usually a one click root app (or in sometimes a full-blown pre-rooted firmware, but nobody's made one of those for this device)
Not that I disagree with you outright. If one has a device with an unlocked bootloader, it's always better to do it right, rather than these sketchy one-click root apps. But people with AT&T or Verizon devices have completely locked down bootloaders, so they don't have much of a choice. I've been missing CM on my phone (AT&T branded) I finally snapped and bought myself an international model

Oh I gotcha. That makes sence. So is there no way to unlock the bootloader AT&T or verizon? I have a HTC Desire 510 from cricket that had a locked bootloader but was able to get a unlock token from HTC. Most difficult phone I had to root in terms of being tedious and the time it took lol. I have rooted my tab 4 and my s4 before screen broke, both of which were straightforward and pretty simple, but never had AT&T or Verizon. I wonder why they have locked bootloader without having a way to unlock it like my HTC. Anyways thanks for your response, I always enjoy learning new things about android and software/hardware in general. Also do you have chrome on ur phone, if you do does it auto update with out permission. Mine just started doing this a few days ago.

Hi everyone...
I'm new to Android and iBones (sic), I'm more of an old school PC "CounterStrike/Team Fortress/Half-Life" type.
Anyhow, I got myself in the same position as the others here with the AT&T branded Tab 4s. I can see how easy it is to get into that position now, as I like exploring, or doing something just because I'm told I can't.
As for the fix posted here, it works. I was even surprised that all my apps were still there, minus pics, porn and movies. Uhhh, did I say porn?
The only thing that scared me was how easy and fast it was. It's nice to catch a break now and again!
Props to butchieboy!!!
I have a AT&T Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 (SM-T537A) 5.1.1 and did kingroot this morning to remove all the ADS, my word the ads... Anyway got that message Secure Fail: Kernel after rebooting - Sorry to say this method did NOT work for me. Is it because I have a 10.1 (SM-T537A)? Any suggestions? Thanks and I will keep looking digging.

S6+'s last chance before i drop it in battery acid

So randomly my phone a few weeks ago just shut off.. Thinking the battery died i put it on the charger to see it go in some stupid boot loop with "custom binary blocked by frp lock"
What i have tried is the following:
Odin - loaded new software on it same thing happened couldn't get past the custom binary blocked by frp lock
Downloaded Kies and Smart switch tried that both... same thing again custom binary blocked by frp lock
Took it to a Samsung repair place and they couldn't get past the custom binary blocked by frp lock...
so im posting this up as a last chance kinda thing before i take it to school Monday and drop it in battery Acid.
Thx.

Use samfirmtool(available at xda) because it downloads latest firmware for spesific region. Odin stock should fix this(have seen it did in many cases), yet you should google it 'how to bypass frp lock on note 5' there are few ways through these youtube videos etc. Good luck.
Edit: Sorry I thought this is note 5 forum lol. But shoud be same process.

New software version L720VPSGPL1

HI,
While in the process of resetting my phone, I checked for update and was informed of a new download. After installing it, the software version is now L720VPSGPL1. I googled this but nothing came up. Anyone else getting this update? I'm in the U.S. if that makes any difference.
Thanks

HI,
I'm from Russia, I also received an update to version L720VPSGPL1
Sorry for my English
Found a link through Bing but not sure who operates this site:
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=search&searchValue=SPH-L720
I received it too last week and posted in the rdf forum. I too haven't been able to find any info about it with. Sprint hasn't posted a change log either.
Update is available, but the update failed because apparently something changed my build.prop. Anyone know where to find unmodified files from the original version?
Is this version rootable? If updating a rooted phone, does it unroot?

It will fail and possibly brick your phone if you try to update with a modified system (root, custom recovery, etc). Download the OK3 tar from www.sammobile.com and flash with Odin. Then you can update to PL1. From what I've seen it's only a security update.

Managed to dump an unmodified build.prop from stock ROM. Did a hex compare to mine, only difference is 2 hex bytes appended, 0A 0A. I guess some app that needed root modified my build.prop and when I uninstalled it, it changed it back but not cleanly. Anyway, copied clean build.prop to /system, then let the phone update and it succeeded. Figured it wouldn't hurt anything as I could re-flash with Odin if it bricked. Lucked out and phone update succeeded. Now on PL1 and didn't even lose root.
My wife is traveling to Russia in about 2 weeks. Wanted to UNLOCK the phone so she can buy a local SIM card and use her phone while visiting. Called Sprint and they said they unlocked phone, but not sure how to tell what (if anything) changed.
Is there a method to SIM unlock (and/or carrier unlock) with the PL1 baseband software?

There is a program called GTUpdate2_v3.1.8.apk that can unlock PL1 on a rooted phone. I think it's not a free software, but someone posted a link to it on the forums once.
I think without root, the program should at least tell you if the phone is unlocked.

It might be hard to find as the developer has asked all links to it be taken down.
Got root using cf auto root and confirmed it with root checker and busy box. Also installed twrp through the twrp app and no brick yet. Don't know which rom I can install yet. Not sure if I saw 2 versions of it or not, but if I did which one should I try. I like switching things up from time to time, but I used to like having at least 2 properly functioning roms saved to my phone incase. TIA

v11.0 is just a small update, so you have to flash the full ROM first which is V10.9. There is also the Bare Bones version which is just super debloated.
I'm confused on the versioning. Alphabetically, VPS comes before VPU, so I was thinking that "VPSGPL1" was older. Obviously versioning rules come fast & loose, but I'm curious what the VPS indicates that is different from VPU.
So then is this the correct order for different modems?
Code:
L720VPUFNAE
L720VPUGOD2
L720VPUGOK3
L720VPSGPL1
