Share Wifi connection - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Sorry in advance if the answer is obvious but I want to use my galaxy s4 as a "relay" if you will for a Wifi connection. Is it possible to share the connection and use my device as an access point of sorts? To be clear, I don't want to tether my mobile connection because there doesn't seem to be a good way to do this without AT&T harassing me about it since they have once before, otherwise I would just tether.
I am rooted running clean ROM 1.0

If you don't want to tether then I don't understand. If you are using a wifi connection and want to share - just have other devices connect directly. Why do you want to use your phone as a wifi bridge?

My wireless signal has a very difficult time reaching my PC. I can understand why people would think my request is futile but I've noticed that proximity of the router to my laptop greatly impacts my latency. So I was wondering if it's possible to use it as a relay of sorts :-/

I don't think the phone can use the radio to receive and broadcast wifi at the same time.
I would consider moving my router.

Wifi issues

Does anyone have issues staying connected to wifi on their Fascinate? It seems that I can only connect for a little bit until it cuts out. It still says I'm connected but if I use the internet it says connection lost. Then when I turn the wifi on and off it works for just a little bit again.
Any help would be appreciated but for all I know, I'm the only one with this problem.
Does it happen just at your home connection or other hotspots too?

I can't say I have had that problem....what kernel/rom/modem are you running?

I have the same problem but only with the router at my house
I have DL09 kernel modem and ROM, Blackhole 3.0.

FWIW, wifi was absolute junk on my Fascinate when I had the Wireless Tether app installed. After uninstalling it and switching to Barnacle for tethering, wifi performance improved tremendously. Not sure if that's your issue or not though.

Before updating my wireless driver on my laptop, I couldn't connect to the AdHoc network of Wireless Tether (2.0.6) at all...zilch.
After updating my Intel wireless driver to v13.4 directly from Intel, it found and connected to the AdHoc network immediately and is working great now. No wi-fi drops.
I'm going to try Barnacle next. Just wanted to point out that wifi can be drastically affected by your wireless network card's driver...so update it if you haven't. I prefer to update my wifi cards directly from their manufacturer's site instead of the computer manufacturer unless there is no other choice.
Good luck.

usb tethering rocks

something my last desire never had and something i didn't even know the ns had. after completely screwing up the build system on ubuntu here, it was something i desperately needed. my wifi drivers are borked, so i can't access wifi and was considering a complete reformat, until i noticed the menu option...
thank you ns!
Yeah pretty sweet, i use the portable hto spot option quite a bit , very nifty indeed
btw: is there something like tho opposite of that? sharing a wired pc internet connection with the ns via usb.
Yes. You connect the USB to your nexus s. Then you don't turn on the USB storage. Go to settings wireless options and click on tether.

uhm no - that's regular tethering, isn't it? I meant the other way around. The pc is plugged in to wired internet. And I want to use that for surfing on the phone without having wifi or mobile data activated

Hmm maybe a dev will get on top of this
Oh ic. Sorry. I read that wrong. I don't think There is a simple way to do it. I remember there's a program that lets you turn your laptop into a wireless router. You plug in the Ethernet to your laptop and use the program to transmit the radio like a router. You can probably then use the phone's wifi to connect to that. Ive never tried it but theoretically it should work. Good luck

usb tethering is not something like
" i connect my laptop with the usb port of my NS that(my phone) has internet access over the mobile network and i can use that on my laptop either"??
i mean wi-fi tethering is "sharing" phone's internet connection with other phones/wi-fi enabled devices to access the internet via wireless connection...
so usb tethering should be the same but with cable obviously..
or am i getting something wrong here?

no. that's a hotspot. meaning devices connect to your ns like a router. you can even set a password and session id for your phone

Depend on the ROM U are using... I think so... With MIUI wifi-tether works
Wifi tether is for making your phone's 3G-connection available to your pc. I don't think it's possible to use the phone as a wlan repeater (correct me if i'm wrong).

This is not the correct section. I will move it for you If in doubt, please post in the general section.

Use Android device as wi-fi hotspot to share PC internet connection.

Hi I have a PC connect via ethernet to the internet, I would like to connect my phone to the computer so I can broadcast my computers internet connection to my iPad for example. Don't want to use mobile data tethering thanks. I can use either a HTC Hero or Samsung GS2. Is this possible at all? any apps that will let me do this?
I'm not sure if it forces mobile data when hotspot is enabled.
If not, I'd connect the phone to the PC using internet pass through with mobile data disabled and hot spot enabled. I'm unsure if it will use your PC's internet when broadcasting though

Also, I found a similar request here

Its not the greatest help though, but that open garden app still does something I guess

You want your computer to be a Wi-Fi router? Try Connectify. You will need a Wi-Fi card to make it work.

If your computer has a Wi-Fi card/builtin, you can use something like Connectify to turn your computer into a hotspot.

Like a PCI card or it's built into all laptops built in the last ten years.
If I had a wireless card..I wouldnt even bother about getting a phone with "Internet Pass Through"
What I am asking is "A Desktop without a wifi card but has a wired internet connection needs to provide internet to a laptop"
What are we having with us? - A Phone with "Internet Pass Through" enabled
A Desktop (With no WIFI card)
A Laptop (With a WIFI card ofcourse)

Laptop would work. It has built-in Wi-Fi and probably a 10/100[/1000] ethernet port.

You still don't understand mate...
What I meant to say is
PC is WIRED with broadband connection...It is passed to the phone using Internet Pass Through...
Now THE GOLDEN QUESTION IS HOW TO BROADCAST THIS INTERNET(that is present in the phone through IPT) USING ANY HOTSPOT APP!
?

follow this reverse tethering guide (i've tested this one and it's working):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371345
and when it's done... try and activate the wifi hotpot feature of your android phone.

Oh gotcha. Sounds like you got an answer above but if that doesn't work, hook your phone up to the laptop and use an app like Connectify on that laptop. Sorry I didn't understand.

I personally have not used that specific app but most phones support netive tethering (or sharing your broadband, if that floats your boat). I personally recomend FoxFi, an app developed by the makers of PDAnet, a reliable tethering app. Search the Play Store on YOUR COMPUTER first. Some carriers block the app from showing. Have fun and don't get caught.

He wants to use his cable/dsl connection on his phone, not the other way around.
Connectify might work if you have a Wi-Fi adapter on your PC. But it would probably just be easier to get a wireless router.
