Screenshot Softkey - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Will any of the custom roms allow a screenshot soft key to be added to the control bar (like on Samsung Tablets)? Thanks.

i'm using SlimROM and they have an option to add that to the soft keys. either via longpress or just a button. i think many of the ROMs that allow that type of customization will also allow adding screenshot.

Same you can just go into Interface -> Navigation Bar -> Buttons, and increase the number of buttons to add in a screenshot softkey. Or you can use long-press on one for the same action.
Notice the glow on the 'recent' soft button, that's because I set it's longpress to be a screenshot action. Works just fine on SlimBean 6.5-Weekly

Multitask button on Nav Bar

Looked around and didn't see this being brought up. Is there away to out the multitasking app instead of the menu button and bring back the 3 dot menu button back in apps? Hate freaking menu buttons and having to long press the home.
I remember figuring out a way to add software nav buttons on an S4 manually by editing some lines in the system but since the soft nav bar is already present I don't think that would work. Any ideas? Thanks.

Root, and there's a few nav bar replacements in the play store that autohide as well.

I'm with you, I think its stupid to have a dedicated menu button when android already has this covered.
The apps the poster above is speaking of does not fix this issue as it also hides the buttons, which is just dumb. Just be patient, I'm sure we will have a fix soon!

This may be my only gripe about this phone, I have tried several of the options, but you have to hide it or tour home screen icons in the dock get lost.

While using the Note 2 I was able to go to the (root) system file and mess with the nav bar. Im going to play with this in a few. I'll report back.

With the S4 I was able to manually add the On screen nav buttons with a line of code. Default android soft buttons are back home and multitask LG edited that to the menu button which is annoying. Let me know what you find. I'm going to try some stuff my self

While I would like to have a dedicated multitasking button, I don't think the menu button is a waste or stupid. There are still numerous apps that don't adhere to Google's new rules for a software menu button and they result in a black bar on the screen. LG dodged this by adding a dedicated software menu button. If you want to see how annoying it is, just pick up an HTC One (or DNA, or One X) and it will make more sense. What they did is emulate the Optimus G Pro (and Samsung's Touchwiz) with software buttons to give the same feel (hold home for multitasking, back and menu). I see why they did it. But yeah, it would be nice if they'd add an option for a multitasking button as either a fourth option or in place of the menu. It would certainly make more sense than the notification shade toggle.

The main reason I did not get the One was because of the stupid buttons. First not on screen and second only 2 buttons.
I do think it will only be a matter of time until someone makes a zip to add the recent button back. Wish I knew how

So my solution to this after 2 days of fiddling with the phone and trying EVERYTHING actually turned out for the better. The setup I have is using GMD gesture control for my buttons and auto hide navbar to have the navbar gone. This app let's you slide certain regions of the screen and trigger different conditions. I have no buttons at all on my screen and have slide functions that work perfect exactly where the Normal buttons would go. Slide up on the left is menu, slide in middle is home, and slide in right is recent apps. My back button is set by my thumb and it works out much better than I could have hoped.

Apps that have their own 3-dot menu
Thanks for the research on this topic. Does anyone know if the GMD app allows an app to retain its 3-dot menu functionality? I've encountered several apps that won't work with the G2's menu softkey preventing you from accessing the app's options.
thanks in advance!

Get xposed installer and install the "xposed additions" module. It allows you to remap any key.

Just a heads up that any remapping of the Home button breaks the ability to take screen shots with Home and Power.
And now does anyone know how to force the 3dot menu on every app? Like the s5 has now?

Since I couldn't find anything to force the on screen on app menu button I just used gravitybox to make the original back key double tap for menu.
It works alright and I don't need menu button in apps that often.

Yeah I have my home button long press action set to be the menu key, and my back key long press is recent apps. I don't really use the menu key since I use the phone one-handed so often (right handed).
As a bonus, I have home button long press activate torch only on the lock screen.

I have xposed additions pro - I don't know whether or not that option is available in the free version.
Now they also added a screenshot function that you can bind any key short press, long press, or double tap.

Remap menu button to recent apps

Hello everyone!
Saw the S5 announcement few days ago and noticed the changes made to the button layout. I'd like to know if there's a way to remap the menu button to work as a recent apps button. And better yet if it's possible to assign the "menu" function to a long press. I've searched Google but all the alternatives I see are for HTC phones or for onscreen buttons.
Thanks in advance!

Look for an app called 'Xposed Additions'. It will do both the things you want.
Installed it. Tried to configure the remapping but it's not doing anything. I hit the "remap" and a window pops up that says key code and it appears that it's waiting for some input, I hit a button but nothing happens.

Xposed Addition doesnt support KK.
Is there another way for this other than Gravity Box for TW Kitkat?

How about MenuBeGone, I'm running this on my 4.4.2 SM-N9005
And it got option to select apps that you don't want to have overflow button on them (like on Action Memo that 3-dot menu replaces delete -button, so you can't delete any memos.. but where do you need menu at all on Action Memo, so just uncheck it on MBC and you're good)
Edit: And it also can remap long press on menu button to show menu (while menu button is remapped to open recent apps)

Which build are you on? (also towelrooted?)
So you remapped menu button=recent and long press=menu. (like on the S5?)
I dont get what you mean with the Action memo though. But from the Description of the App I can tell that youre talking about the Whitelisting?
Thanks.

Yes, some apps get "broken" look when 3-dot menu is enabled on them (like contacts) and yes, long press on "settings" button opens menu, while short opens recent tasks.
About Action Memo see screenshot: menu button "hides" detelete if not whitelisted from MBC
Edit: to make it clear, that module enables "3-dot menu button" on all applications by default. From module settings you can disable that button on selected apps. That module also sets devices settings button to open recent tasks and long press to open settings (so by long pressing you can reach menu also on apps you have disabled to use 3-dot menu)

I got it, thanks. Tried out and its working fine. In Nova launcher the Menu button blinks a lot though - on long press.
There is a certain delay. But I think i will try xposed additions some time later but for now its fine i guess
Thank you!

[Q] Need MENU BUTTON in the navigation bar ( 5.0.X )

Hi all,
I'm really happy with new Lollipop' based roms since last November
But at the moment I've set the double tip on HOME BUTTON of the nav bar the MENU function... 'cause in Lollipop, for the rom available in this period, there's no way to customize the soft keys and having 4 buttons :
* home
* menu
* recent
* back
I'm using an app to simulate 4th MENU button on the nav bar. Anyone knows a mod to flash to have the availability to change this behaviour ? To add another button ? To custom it ?
Thx :highfive:
What app did you use to simulate the menu button?

The name was Virtual Menu Root Button, u can't find it anymore on Google Play 'cause is old, no more support. The developer is the same of :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.ne.neko.freewing.VirtualButtonRoot
that released this new one with all the buttons

Softkey Mods for nav bar

Anyone know if any apps either root or none root would allow you to customize the navigation soft keys? I would like to add a menu key option to the current 3 options we have now. Stock LG options dont allow it.
Ill second that miss the menu button

I just downloaded Swiftly from a dev here and I've never been more impressed with a substitute for soft keys. And soft keys are a huge complaint for me.
