Change settings and notification dropdown - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I changed the look of my phone drastically with a different launcher and different apps and icons. I absolutely dislike touchwiz..
Now I was wondering if I can also change the look of the settings and notification dropdown. It looks strange compared to everything else on my phone. How come htc managed to make a decent looking settings menu and touchwiz looks unfinished? especially ugly are the square pop up boxes... I love my phone but this is something I'd like to change.

Side scroll like galaxy ics etc

Hi any way of getting the app menu to scroll sidewards etc

i couldn't say what one exactly, but you can acheive this by changing to another launcher, just need to make sure that launcher has the side scroll bit that you want.
Doesn't a launcher alter everything else though?

Yeah it would change the homescreen and app drawer, but the settings menus/dialer etc all stays the same.
You also won't be able to use the htc widgets, although there are others that do a better job anyway.
But they are normally highly customisable, and pretty nice / smooth to use.

Galaxy SIII Annoyances Megathread

Galaxy SIII is a fantastic phone, but I seem to be constantly let down by touchwiz stuff. My idea for this thread is a big, long list of annoyances and suggestions for fixing them.
For example, an annoyance: TW doesn't support sorting the app drawer by name, you have to manually sort things and that goes slow. You would have thought they'd have a better way to manage the app drawer by now, but alas, no.
Solution: AppZorter Lite is a free solution that will sort your app drawer for you. Bonus: I like a nice empty app list, so I've gotten it hidden (one thing TW does do) and just launch it from the store when I need to.
Two that I haven't solved:
1) Facebook has filled my contact list with a huge number of people I don't care about, seems to have ignored the "only sync with existing contacts". Removing facebook users is a process: hold on the user, press delete, confirm that it isn't actually deleting.
2) The default MMS app seems to send (or displays?) all picture messages as slideshows. Super lame. Is there any way to turn this out without installing a 3rd party app?
App drawer, menu, view type, alphabetical grid or list.

much easier than my solution. skipped right over that option.
Thanks.
Trying out Pansi SMS as my sms solution, though it's a bummer that it doesn't interact with the lock screen like the native one.

If you goto phone contacts menu display you can remove fb contacts for ppl you dont want
Scrolling wallpapers!!!! (Already made a thread for it)
The app drawer thing is why I didn't use the TW launcher on the Epic. At least now I can install Apex or Nova in the system/app folder.
Network errors, Sprints fault, not the phone.
Oh, I asked that S-Voice b*tch where she was from and she didn't understand. Guess that's what I get for hitting on my phone. :crying:

nvm, someone already posted it.
TouchWiz in general is just a piece of ****. Still running the Epic here and I cursed my phone every day until I put launcher pro on it and it was manageable. Didn't actually like my phone until I rooted and got CM9. My wife is getting the S3 upgrade but CM9 will go on as soon as it is available. She knows how ****ty TW is.

Meh. To each his own. I used to own an iphone and found it boring and featureless. TW just reminds me of the iphone too much. Not as bad as miui though.

i must be one of the few people in the community that like the galaxy s3 touchwiz and "motion". Maybe I'm just on that "new phone" high.

Turn off double ppress for svoice. It is quicker. The reason food the delay is that it is giving the user a chance to double press

Pissed that BB had no accessories when i picked up the phone and i now have 2 micro scratches on the screen from screen sliding along a piece of paper on my desk at work.
I hate the purple/baby blue rim around the phone.
Waiting for a black TPU bumper and black metal battery cover replacement from china to resolve these issues.
Outside of that- much more impressed with the form factor than that of the EVO LTE which i traded for it. The S3 is very comfortable in hand.
Phone is way too slippery!
BTW- Touchwiz sucks! i installed Apex while waiting to check out at BestBuy.

Pull down notification bar?

Currently running cyanogenmod on my 7.7, I would prefer the 'phone' interface with the pull down notification bar, is there any way that I can enable this?
Thanks

I think this requires a dpi change . I'm not sure, but I'd be interested in trying this out. It'd work kinda like the Nexus 7.

Set swipe-down gesture (on any decent launcher) to "open notification".
Yeah, swipe down notification like a phone, but i wanna it workable on landscape too

I don't understand why anyone likes the pull down bar, to me the most natural place is at the bottom of the screen where my thumbs rest. It's hassle to have to move to the top of the screen. What advantages is it to have the bar at the top?

The term pull up bar was already taken. And no one likes pull up bars
You can change it with modifying the build.prop file and change the settings for:
ro.sf.lcd_density=160
I think if you set it to 240 it will run in so called "phablet" mode and you have the Pull down bar.
I tried it, but almost broke my installation, as the screen stayed totally black after a reboot.
So i stopped fiddling with this option.

How change the grid size and number of home screens?

Don't tell me to use a different launcher because I want to remain stock... But I just can't figure this out. I have looked through settings and everything but can't find any launcher settings. Thanks. I know its a stupid question but im confused!

You can not complete such a task on stock. You MUST use a different launcher like Nova or Apex just as a couple of examples. Google doesn't allow you to modify grids in the settings. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear. Sorry.

I use Nova Launcher. It is based on the stock launcher & has that same look & feel. It gives you options like changing the number of rows & columns, hide apps from the drawer, and remove the persistent search bar.
I also use Nova. It's built from the stock launcher, plus it has LOTS of extra customization features. Seriously, just get it.
Honestly the only reason I was trying to avoid it was because I didn't feel like setting it up. But its done now and works well! Thanks

Dual-use Navbar Icons

HI, I'm scissors_cut_paper. I have recently taken a disliking to sacrificing my home screen real estate for a dock. I am currently using slimkat, which has the ability to assign a long press function and custom icon to navbar buttons. To that end, I have created some dual use navbar icons, based on stock kitkat, but representing both functions of the navbar key. Now i'm no themer, but paint.net is pretty easy to use. If anyone has good ideas or request I may entertain them, though I would recommend having a play yourself.
To set these keys/icons in slimkat use settings/navigation/navigation bar/buttons.
The current icons I have made are-
Notification pulldown/longpress Quicksettings (Never reach for the top of your screen again)
Back/longpress kill app
Home/longpress application draw
Recents/longpress menu
Filemanager/longpress ?
Download - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v9sz5sco0bdrue0/f_9QvTcLcT
All credits to slim for implementing the functionality, all i did was make some buttons.
Video of implementing (not everyone will need this, took me a while to figure it out though) http://youtu.be/ist7kSStb9k
Video in use - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv88dWqbkcQ
want to share your wallpaper pl0x?
No problem

any videos on you using it? Im interested...
YouTube link added in OP. Can do a quick video of how to implement (in slimkat, anyway) if anyone needs? Also did some cleanup, changed file explorer icon to better match stock theme.

Still trying to figure out what I want to do with my ring.I've got shortcuts set up in the QS, combined with the pulldown button in navbar means they appear right above where your finger already is.
