I've been trying for a while to figure out how to have custom vibrate for the stock SMS app on a stock rooted rom with a stock Kernal through light flow. For some reason, the only way I can get it to work is by disabling notifications in the SMS app, but then I don't get a status bar SMS icon.
If I leave SMS notifications on in app, sometimes it does the regular weak double vibrate, sometimes a weak vibrate and a half, or just random weak vibrates.
It works fine on CM, but I'd really like to stay on stock. Any input?

You'd think if you could do all that stuff on stock there wouldn't be much a need for various custom roms
I love this option though.
PS: I noticed that some of the application such as the messaging app, usually has the ability to set a custom vibrate pattern in it's own setting, so it may be a per-app basis (if they don't have the option then I imagine they use the system default).
When I first got my N4, I experimented with light flow. I bought my phone unlocked and been using it as the way it was out of the box. Haven't experimented with different roms and kernels yet but I would do that eventually. Light flow works perfectly on mine, I changed the vibration, light notification and duration of how long it will vibrate and stay on. I didn't have to change the settings or anything on the MMS app.
One thing that I did do though on light flow is, the same settings that I used for the SMS, Is what I used for the MMS. Trying doing that and see is if it works.

I do the same thing, making sure it is the same between SMS and MMS. I've tried checking different options in light flow, toggling vibration in the MMS app, and I just can't a custom vibrate pattern.
In the end, I want sound only in a sound mode and vibrate only in vibrate mode with custom vibrations. And for what it's worth, the light settings work fine.

Its not really custom vibrations per Se, the Developer gives you list of different vibration patterns you can choose from in whatever light flow app setting you choose. You can choose to have the vibrate, vibrate only when phone is silent. Not sure about the sound thing. I don't think you can do it the way you are talking about. Honestly there are so much things you can do with light flow that I didn't bother going through it.

I decided to just stay stock and switch to Go SMS, although I like the stock SMS better. Although Go SMS natively supports custom vibrations, I'm using Lightflow to control everything (mostly since it allows separation of ringer and notification volumes).
Using the stock app with Lightflow, I can't get any of the preset vibrate patterns to work. I spent an hour earlier going through all the different settings modes (direct mode ect) and still nothing.
Something I find strange is that if Lightflow is uninstalled and "vibrate" is unchecked in the SMS app, it will give me a very weak 1.5 vibrates. If it is checked, it gives me two strong vibrates, which would do what I want, but then it also vibrates when in sound mode. With lightlfow installed, it does all kind of crazy random vibrates.
I feel like I'm being a bit picky, but I "crotch" my phone when I drive and I can't even feel this thing vibrate with stock SMS.

Does any else have a issue with their LED Notification Light not working?
No light when charging, or SMS, or Email, Missed Call, Low Battery... never lights up. Almost thought they forgot to install the LED until I used LightFlow to test it. And even then it only works when the screen is off, once the power button is pressed to turn the screen on then LED goes off, even though I set LightFlow to clear notification Manually. (LightFlow was just used to test if the LED was installed/functional.)
Uninstalled LightFlow, send myself a couple test emails and text(from another phone) and There was no LED notification light, just the notification sound.
Really hoping this is a software issues so I don't have to request a replacement device from Google...
Edit/Update: I'm pretty sure this is a software related issue and not hardware, as the LED is there and functions (with the help of 3rd party app, which we should not have to use) - So I'm trying to get a poll here of how many people have issues with the LED Notification light not working. Something to report to Google/Bug Report.

I believe the reason is that the software has not been updated to be completely compatible with 4.2+

Mine doesn't work either. I tried LightFlow and while it did light up the LED for some things, but not all that I selected, it was too faint to see, have to be in total darkness to see it.
The led isn't supposed to flash when the screen is on. Its been this way with every nexus.

But does your LED work when the screen is off? Mine and the OP's don't unless you use a third party app.

Is the Notification Light activated under display settings?
Mine worked, but not really well, I only saw it once when sending myself a test mail. Now I'm using Light Flow, which works nearly perfect (sometimes it doesn't seem to work until I enable the screen for a second and then disable it again)

Pulse notification light is checked
Im having the same problem. My led doesnt seem to come on no matter what. I know it worked out of the box because I have seen it light up with light flow but now im wondering if it quit completely and if I should do an RMA.
Mine has been working fine. It's white for TXT's, green for a lot of other things like FB and whatsapp
Yes the "Pulse notification light" option is checked.
I woke today with 6 New emails, 4 text messages, and 1 missed call... No LED Notification light was on, blinking or doing anything.
There not being a notification light is bugging the heck out me, 'cause I depend on them when my phone is on silent at work so I'm able to know there is a message waiting without having to stop what Im doing to turn the screen on every 5 min.

Try 'Blink'
Try the app 'Blink' very simple and its works for my N4
are you waiting 10 seconds before turning the phone on? Thats how long it takes before it blinks again. Whoever programmed the LED truly hates LED notifications because he made it blink so slowly and dimly that nobody could possibly notice it.

Yup, sat there watching the phone for a good 2-3 min after hearing the Notification sound for new email / text. (screen off)
Not sure if its suppose to or not, but I don't even get a LED Notification light when the phone is charging or charged (have to turn phone on to check if the phone is done charging.) Past devices I've had used the LED to notify of charging/charged.
It's normal that it doesn't glow when charging. I really can recommend Light Flow, then you can customise the notification as you wish (the free version is good, I bought the full version because I need steam support, but for normal use there is no need to buy it)

Ok, so my notification light wouldnt work no matter what. I uninstalled sms popup and now light flow works like it should. I guess the sms popup was somehow blocking light flow from allowing it to activate.
No notification light shows while charging, hence why when you charge the phone when it's off, it shows an animation on the screen. It should for calls, texts, emails, etc. though. Mine works. It even shows blue for facebook and white for texts/emails. Not sure why it wouldn't work. Have you gotten the 4.2.1 update?
Additionally, light flow states in its description that it doesn't work on most lg phones.
On previous phones, when I got a notification, say a text message, the screen would light up and I could tell I had to check my phone. On my N4, when I get a text the phone only vibrates and the screen doesn't light up. Is there a way to have it light up? I tried looking through all the settings but couldn't find anything, and I find it rather odd LG would set their phone up like this.
Also- is there a way so that the pulse notification light goes off more frequently? right now I have to wait about 10 seconds for the next pulse light to go off, making the notification LED rather useless if i miss it the first time.
Thanks.

There's custom ROMs such as CarbonROM, Xylon, ParanoidAndroid, or XenonHD and so many others) that let you configure the colour, blink rate, and application-specificity of your LED indicator. You can also look at Liteflow to customize your LED notification if you'd rather not go to custom ROMs
Light Flow.

This. But if you are rooted and having a custom ROM, they integrate it by default. But if it's really waking up the device you want, you might want to try an app called SMS WakeUp. (You can get it from the Play Store)
Whenever I get any notification, the screen does not come on, if the phone is locked. The screen only turns on for calls, or if i actually tuen the phone on.
Am i missing something, because I cant seem to find a setting to turn the screen on with notifications. It is stock apps, like messaging, and not just third party apps like facebook.
That's normal, but you have to LED notification light

Oh ok. I just wasnt sure as I came from TW.
LED notification light on N4 is pretty poor in all honesty, it flashes extremely slowly! I know I can download a third party app but are there any ways to change the settings of the LED flash without a third party app?

Yeah, a custom rom.
Slightly OT, but the LED notification on the N4 is poor compared to GN. It was muuuch brighter.

Yup, CM in my opinion has a really nice way of setting it up. And amen to the Gnex light, it's the only thing I've missed about it since upgrading!
Just got my nexus today! Playing with the notification light and doing some research. Seems light flow and led blinker cause the ambient display to come on randomly. I also tried light manager but that gives a persistent notification in the notification shade which is annoying. Any suggestions?

light flow works great for me (I turned off ambient display, as it doesnt work very well even without light flow installed). You can also, in light flow, turn off the switch screen option, which will also help with ambient display.
as for the persistent notification, that is a marshmallow issue for the time being, the light flow developer explained it quite nicely (ill try and dig it up).
http://www.reactle.com/2015/10/changes-for-android-6-marshmallow.html .... scroll down to persistent notifications

Yeah, I mean I just got the phone today but ambient display is a little wonky. I thought it was supposed to turn on every time I take my phone out of my pocket, but if doesn't.
But where is this screen option in light flow?
The persistent notification is only with light manager. I don't get one with light flow.

give it time, on its own, it will come on also
In light flow, I am not sure if it is on by default, but if you go to main settings > general settings, there is an option for device admin, if that is checked, you will also have an option to switch screen on (which you can enable/disable on a per notification basis) . You could if you wish use this option instead of light flow, it may work better for what you like as well.
I've observed that when an incoming call rings the phone and it is not answered, the green notification LED only flashes for approximately 5 minutes before it times out. I'm used to a continuous notification light on my Galaxy S6 and Sony Z3 until I unlock my phone and clear the notification.
Would be nice if we could change this default behavior. I much prefer a continuous notification light vs. one that times out so quickly. Unless you use an app similar to DynamicNotifications, you may be checking your phone a lot just to see if you've missed any calls.
I haven't tried any other notification tests from other apps. Can anyone else confirm the behavior described above?

Hmmm...I wonder why an LED if you can't really work with it. I use LIghtflow, and would hope it would work on this phone. Maybe it won't.
