Nexus 7 doesn't charge - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My nexus 7 doesn't turn on or hold a charge. I plug it in to the wall and the charging icon will come on for five seconds, then the whole screen will turn off. If I unplug and plug the usb cable back in the same thing will happen.
Is there anyway to fix it or am I screwed?

How old is it? Is it old enough that the battery might be dead? Maybe the battery connection is simply loose or disconnected.
This shows you how to get to it : http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+Nexus+7+Battery/9895/1
(it's also the same guide you would follow if you wanted to buy a replacement battery and install it, otherwise if it's just the cable you can plug it back in and secure it).

It's less than a year old. It did suffer some water damage. I turned it off and put it in rice for a few days. Now I'm trying to turn it on and this is happening. I made sure there was a good connection with the battery. I also took it apart to make sure nothing was still wet and all the connections seemed good. I've also tried different cables and chargers. The original cable that came with it is damaged, but I've tried 3 other ones. Same result

Even if nothing was still wet now, there could be some corrosion in the internal parts, or some other parts could have simply been shorted and as a result would need to be serviced. If a new battery doesn't do the trick then it's probably something on the mainboard that has been shorted.

I will have to try a different battery. However, is there a way to get a replacement mainboard? I'm pretty sure the warranty is voided now.

eBay, or maybe the iFixit site might have parts, but usually when it comes down to needing a new mainboard, cost-wise you would just get a new one, and then sell parts off your broken one to make up for the difference.

Broken USB port

Hi, my port broke. I managed to resolder it but now when I plug the phone to my pc, windows displays the usb not recognized alert... How can I fix it.
It sounds like you did not resolder it correctly.
Check with a magnifying glass to make sure you didn't accidentally bridge the connections with solder.
its quite hard to sold it right i have done it once it tookt me all day to get it right i tested it with the charger it it charges it should be ok at least my one was/is the first day the active sync didn´t connect at all but 2 days later i plugd it in and it connected so be carefull with the solder if u dmg the board you may say goodbye to your phone take time to do it right

i think i have that problem... i soldered the usb port for a 8125(wizard100) and it charges fine as i can see the light. it charged for a couple of hours then the orange light turned green. so that's good. but i can't seem to get any response. i tested the battery in another phone to see if it actually charged (i was kicking myself before thinking i messed it up). so i dont think the board is dmged.... however does anyone know which pin corresponds with power, etc. so i can test for a response?
less worried, more concerned....
Ok, so i tested the unit without the battery and it comes on. However i can't seen to get it to work with the battery in it. Oh yeah one more thing the unit keeps cutting off.

lucky for you, its the ebay battery for me its my oem battery. going to try to swap out another oem battery/charger and see if its my battery.
had the same issue, i noticed on mine that the battery pins on the phone tend to bend easily to prevent a good connection from the battery. phone would power on but wouldn't charge either.
is it the pins? i need some pictures or a video tutorial on this fix lol i have no idea what everyone is talking about, the pins look fine to me. im pretty sure that its my cable now since it didnt charge a blackberry phone either...
Damn how can this phone be so hi tech but made with th most CHEAPEST materials!
i bought a new micro usb cable, and its charging now...

I bought one off of amazon and it would totally freak my phone out....no joke...it was just a wall charger no usb...now I only use the usb like the one that came with the phone and that is i.t
When you get a new phone, you should always condition the battery by letting it run completely down a few times in the beginning. When I was doing this with my phone when I first got it, after a complete drain it wouldn't charge. All i had to do was pull the battery and put it back in. Then it started charging fine. Not sure if this helps...
Also I wouldn't say these phone use cheap materials because people are not careful and bend the pins. I've removed my battery several times and the pins are perfect... If the pins aren't flexible, you wouldn't be able to get the battery in. In order to be flexible, they have to be soft. Pay attention when you are removing and replacing your battery.
You ended up figuring it out but I figured it would be good to point out that sometimes the connections on the battery/phone get dirty or pretty much any battery where it connects to the electronic.
What I usually do first when I have problems with any of my electronics turning on/charging is I take a cotton swab and dip it in rubbing alcohol. Shake it off cuz there will be alot of alcohol on there just so its not dripping and rub the connections then flip the cotton swap around then rub them again with the dry side. This doesnt work all the time but works enough for me to mention it. Static electricity will attract dirt and grime. Used to happen semi often on my touch pro since I used to have it in my pocket when I worked on a golf course.
Anyways just my 2 cents.

[Q] Charging problem

Hey all,
It seems my HTC HD2 is unable to receive any kind of charge. I've used a different usb cable, my roommate's myTouch 4G cable and a friend's HD2 cable, and they all cannot charge my phone as well. My phone doesn't recognize any cable that is being plugged into it. I've made sure I'm in the right USB connection setting, checked the little 3 gold prongs where my battery receives (electricity?) from the phone to make sure those aren't situated in an odd bent position, but alas nothing. Could it do something with the actual part on my HD2 that the cables plug into? Phone is currently dead and I have no phone and am out of warranty. Is it a part I can easily replace?
Thanks for your help!
Edit: It seems the HD2 was launched on March 16 so I'm a couple of days past the 1 year mark fo warranty. Do you think I could persuade tmobile or HTC into replacing my phone even though it this slim out of warranty?
Does your lex still show that the battery is charving when you plug your HD2 up to your charger? If so you may have a faulty battery. If not then it could be a hardware or software problem. I suggest you buy another battery and see if
Nope, the chord isn't even recognized. It's as if nothing is plugged in when in fact something is.
Sounds like a broken microUSB port. Unnless you have a warranty, you're out of luck. To replace the port, you'd need a whole new mainboard.
Yes if your HD2 is not recognizing the USB cable then yes it sounds like you have a bad mini USB port on your HD2. You can try a hard reset if you want to but make sure to back up all your personal information first, but I kinda doubt it will do you any good to hard reset. You will have to get the main board replaced if this is your issue, wi h I believe it is. You can either find a cell phone repair shop or do it yourzlc ic you feel comfortable enough doing it. replacing the mainboard requires no soldering as all the ribbons just plug in. You just need to be gental with everything as you are working on it.
Now to get you by until you can either fix the phone or just to be abale to harvesting the battery for day to day use. You can by a external charger. Or you can take a old USB cable or buy a cheap USB cable and cut the end off of it. Strip it back a little and the zrip back the red and black wires a little. With a little tape attack the red wire to the positive(+) battery terminal and the black wire to the negative (-) battery terminal. Then plug the cable into your wall charger, don't worry the oltage comming out the wires is very low and will not hurt you, in fact you can not even feel it. They are marked on the battery. I do suggest just using this as a very temporary fix until you can vet an external charger or get your HD2 fixed as I do not know if this may be detramental to your battery with long term use. Also I give credit to Senior Member Samsamuel for this idea as he is the one I learned it from.
I contacted HTC and they confirmed the phone is still under warranty. The problem is I'm running CM7 on my phone so I'm asssuming when they start it up and view I have a 3rd party ROM, they'll void my warranty. I would rather fix it myself personally but I don't know anything nor do I really want to touch/pay for a new mainboard. But if my phone does get it's warranty voided, I'll have to pay either way. I think I might just go ahead and buy an external battery charger until i figure out what to do

magldr wont let battery charge when phone is off.
No fault with phone, dead battery and user error.
Use another hd2 that isnt running magldr to charg ebattery, OR use friends battery to flash to winmo and use winmo to charge battery, OR take an old usb cable, mini or micro, cut end off, find red and black wires, connect red to + black to - on the battery (the markings are on there faintly) and plug in to wall charger for a half minute or so then try start phone with real usb cable plugged in. should be enough charge to boot far enough into android for the charging to start. If nothing at all happens, then maybe there is really a problem.
You can hold the wires on by hand, you wont feel it, or i used tape.

stock ROM. download it, extract the .NBH from the .exe, stick the .NBH on the SD card and rename it to LEOIMG. Hold volume down + power when the phone is off.
may i repeat, just to confirm you considered this before you go about getting it repaired,, , if the battery is flat and magldr is installed, the phone wont charge.nothing will happen when you plug in usb.

Nexus 7 Won't charge to 100%

My Nexus 7 will randomly charge to about 20-40% of the battery where it was when I plugged it in and stop charging until I unplug and re-plug it. I noticed it after update to 4.2 but I can't imagine it being a ROM issue, it does the same behavior on or off.
What I have tried:
Different charger
N7 on
N7 off
What I haven't tried:
Different outlet in a house
Charging from PC
Until I try those, any ideas? It worked fine until a few weeks ago. Running PA 3 nightly currently. Thanks.

First, try a different power outlet
___________________________
Second, you could try:
Backup apps with app_manager/other app backuper thing,
factory data reset,
Load a rom with many users, few reports of battery errors (could be your current rom, if it is stable EDIT: derp, PA3 is stable, sorry)
DON'T restore your apps, yet
Try charging it to 100%
If successful, load apps in batches, monitoring to see if any are causing a problem (specifically unpopular apps or battery "savers", in fact don't use battery savers.
If unsuccessful and you have tried multiple chargers/outlets, try a replacement battery or send the thing back to where you bought it.
Hope this helps
PM me to reply to once you post here if you need further help, otherwise I will probably miss your response

What I would do is -
1. Try a different outlet. Stock cable.
2. Remove case, unplug battery. Let it sit for 5 minutes unplugged, plug it back in, charge it up.
One thing you didn't mention is if you are using the manufacturer provided charger and micro USB. I have only had this a few days, and have noticed different cables/charger combos don't always work as well as the Asus provided ones. If you are using your stock charger, perhaps the connections are getting worn and you need a new comparable charger, or perhaps try the new dock that is out.!

1. I will try that
2. There is no case, and I can't unpug the battery, it is not removable. Unless you mean split the case of the device and unhook the battery, which I am not willing to do.
I have tried different chargers, and this has been happening for the last few times I have charged the device for +/- 3 weeks.
I would say try a different outlet. My nexus 7 will charge to 100 percent and stay there for a good hour. Don't think the battery is calibrated but doesn't bother me any.

In that case, folks may not be able to help you. The battery connector is a rather common issue on the N7. Removing the back of the case is easy, as it comes off in the same manner a phone's would.

Wow! I always thought the back was no removable, but with a small bit of effort it certainly does. If the connector has indeed worked itself slightly loose, that would explain is issue.
OP, you can safely remove the back cover. For me the top corners were the easiest to get started, with a fingernail ( or possibly a plastic knife) work up one corner and then work that around the device. You will see where the connector for the battery ties into the tablet so you can see if it is loose.

Interesting, I'll try it out. Thanks.
I pulled the case off, which was much easier than I suspected it would be. I unplugged the battery, let it sit for five minutes and plugged it in. I also deleted batterstats.bin just for good measure. So far I have had two successful charges to 100% so thanks to everyone for the ideas. We shall see if it is permanent.

[Q] Replaced USB port and not sure if it is going to work.

My mother destroyed the USB port on her nexus 7, and asked me to replace it. I got the part a week later and replaced it (pretty easy). When i connect a USB cord to it nothing happens. I assume a battery is suppose to show up on the screen during Powered off charging. Anyone have any idea? Does it have to do with it being discharged for a week? Could there be a short?
It does take a while to respond after being discharged for a while. But it shouldn't take longer than 10 minutes to show something on the screen. I don't think the installation went right.

I charged it for about 8 hours and still nothing, not even a battery on the screen. I reseated the usb port and battery, and charged for about 3 hours and nothing. I think im going to leave it charging over night and see.
If everything looks correct, then that's a problem... Anyways, I wish you luck. And keep mom cool and collected!
How did she destroy the port did she break it or electronically damage it? Have you have you inspected the ribbon cable for damage? Next step would be to open the back and use a multimeter to check how far the voltage is getting ie to you get 5volts out the ribbon where it meets the motherboard. (The ribbon goes all the way up under the copper sheet and battery it comes out next to where the battery plugs in)
