[Q] Nexus 7 Won't turn on! - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, today I dropped my nexus seven from very low and when I picked it up it wouldn't turn on so what I did is went and charged it and the backlight turned on but no charging image or anything whatsoever was appearing so then I tried holding the power button and it just made it go all crackily like a TV the Nexus has no cracks on the screen but just won't turn on, please help if you know how I could fix this please let me know

Try taking off the back cover, more then likely its your battery cable is loose. Happened to me once before

Thanks mate that fixed it all I had to do was pry open back and then push down the connector and then babam it was fixed

Turns out it didn't work
So I opened back and pushed it in (It was already in very tight) and then I put case back on and nothing if I go to charge it it just puts on the backlight or flashes :/

Never had it persist like that. Try taking the ribbon off the connector a few minuets, while doing so check the male and female connections and see if nothing is bent/broken, if all looks fine plug it back in.
Off all fails, it might be the display ribbon loose, but I can't really tell you where it is or even if its a good idea to try to mess with it. Look up some videos on YouTube and see if the job would be easy for you. If not, you might have to send it out to get fixed. Idk what they do with rooted ones, maybe someone can shed some light on that topic.

Just so others with this problem can be aware from the start that this is a known issue, with a known fix, we have a sticky in this forum right here, or just look at the listings on the top of the forum. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys but the problem is still here I will probably be sending back to Google this week, how long do you think it will take + I have warranty will I have to pay?

[Q] Touchscreen Unresponsive after reboot menu

My touchscreen becomes unresponsive after holding down the power button to get to the Phone Options where the Silent mode, Airplane mode, Choose Profile, Screenshot, Reboot , and Power Off options are located. The touch screen becomes unresponsive, I have to power off the screen for a few seconds and turn it back on and the touch screen will work again. It just started doing this 2 weeks ago. I have tried different roms and no difference. I have performed task 29 no difference, even after fresh installation of roms with no other apps installed
Im suspecting a worn digitizer but not sure because it only does it after phone opentions menu is opened, other than that the touchscreen works fine. Than again not sure if its a rom issue because it does it with different roms even older ones i never had problems before. I just know how to flash roms and basic stuff and not that far advanced
By the way I have the latest MGLDR, and recovery, have performed task 29 and even tried it with the SD card out and same result
Any help would be greatly appriciated especially if you have had this exact problem please i want to hear from you
Thank you
Broken flat cable from digitizer to mainboard.I had the same problem.
Was it expensive to fix? Or did you fix it yourself? Did you replace the cable, digitizer or just the cable? And thanks for the help

Sure he meant this, in order to make sense!
Solution: another touchscreen/digitizer or even better(but more expensive) new combo(lcd+touchscreen/digitizer)!
I have noticed that after it boots it will let me select an option from the the phone option menu but only when it is fresh of a boot, once the phone settles after a minute or two it's when the problem starts
For the meantime I'm using Quick Boot app from the market since that is the only thing it affects. I will check for prices to replace digitizer. I have seen the digitizers alone on Ebay going got around 10 bucks but I'm scared of the installation lol. I'm going to check the phone repair shop and check how they charge. If it's too much I'll just live with it since the Quick Boot app is working fine.
Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it and hopefully it can help somebody else with the exact problem

Well took it to a local repair shop and guy told me the wires looked good and said maybe the motherboard was going out, well if it is guess I'll use my wife's Samsung Vibrant which I must say has never had any problems with, until its time for a contract renewal for me

I highly doubt the board is bad. I already took mine apart, a collection of dust and dirt causes the end button to mess up the contacts. Your board is probably fine if you aren't experiencing overheating or any other symptoms, no offence, he probably just wanted more work to do so they could charge you more. I've done some computer repairs for family and friends and it's ridiculous the bull that repair stores throw at you

I'm not experiencing overheating issues, the guy didn't charge and said he didn't have another motherboard to swap out with and test. He didn't charge me anything at least. I know its ridiculous how much they charge sometimes but its out of warranty so I don't have much choice and I'm scared to take it apart and damage something else but I have no other choice now lol. Did you look at a video before you took your apart?
Also was your phone doing the exact same thing? It does make sense it could be a dirty contact, I work ata Chevy dealer and bad contacts sometimes do weird things but sometimes at the lock screen the touch screen won't work also and I have to turn of t the screen for it to work

Lol thanks I meant after I take the cover off, I was able to take the plastic buttons of but I didn't see much dust, I **** a little compressed air but that's all, how did you clean up the actual buttons?
Well I put it back together after blew the buttons but for a little while the touchscreen was not working at all, I rebooted a few times and it started working but same problem
Just wanted to know how you cleaned the buttons if I'm missing something. I really want to fix it because I don't to use my wife HD2, I'll never hear the end of it from her because I always tell her phone is better lol

Lol. what cover are you talking about? i just followed the one video and blew compressed air through ever little nook and crany. It didnt fix it completely as im not too worried about it since my digitizer is shattered. So i'll be more worried about it once i get a new digitizer. But just follow one of the videos on youtube, they take the thing apart all the way down to individual parts.
Hey use attached apk, and remap one of your other buttons to function as the power button. I have mine set to the green button since i dont use it anyhow. That way the endkey doesnt get used so much. It works perfectly. once i get a new display im gonna rig a way to keep this from happening again.

thanks but now my touchscreen does not work at all now. Maybe it was just the digitizer going bad in my phone. I'm using a Samsung Vibrant which in my opinion sucks, I just got it rooted, now I need install CM7, I miss my HD2 so much. I think I'm just going to order a digitizer from Ebay and try to install myself
damn the HD2 phone owners have so many rom choices compared to this vibrant

Ha, have you tried rebooting the HD2? If i hit the end key, it stops working completely, but after a reboot it works again. So far it hasnt stopped working since i remapped the green key to be power key. And yeah i had to use my Touch Pro 2 until i finally got an HD2. I cant wait to get a job and get an SGS2 though. Thats an amazing phone.

[Q] Is this normal?

Just recieved my Nexus 7 today and when going to turn it on, I was greeted by a fantastic grey, washed out screen. This can't be normal can it? Has anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have attached an image for people to inspect, and the only reason I am creating a new thread is because I don't think this is the same issue as the other 'screen washed out' thread. Thanks!
Oh wow. There is no easy way to say it but, no, that is not normal. It may be just that the display cable is not connected all the way or that there actually is something wrong with the screen itself. Either way though, I would RMA that. Tell Google to overnight it like the rest of them that are shipping and you want it advance RMAed.
The problems with these devices is unacceptable.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Hmm this is going to seem VERY weird, but just two seconds ago, I got up out of my chair quickly while holding the device and now the screen looks fine. What is going on with the QC with these? Would you reccomend still RMAing it? I am not even joking, I simply stood up with the device and it fixed itself.
EDIT: Well guess what. I left the device off for the duration of just writing this post and it is back to its washed out self. Looks like it's time to RMA!

Yes, definitely. Just because the problem has(or so it appears to have) fixed itself for the time being doesn't mean that the problem won't creep up or just full blown come back right out of warranty/return window. Also, if something like that got through quality control, what else could be wrong with the device? I would still RMA to be sure. Since this problem appears to be coming and going, I would try to send a picture of the problem in action to someone at Google and have them attach it to your RMA. Maybe even try to put your Google email address in there on a piece of paper or something so that they know that you indeed did take the picture because if they recieve it with no apparent problems, they will assume that you are just returning the device and charge you a 15% surcharge.

Your not the only one that has this problem looks like first batch shipments have alot defects and bugs
Thanks very much for your replies! I have used the Google Play 'contact us' page (not sure if this is the best way but it's a start!) to get this RMA going. Very annoyed at the QC on this device and this many glaring issues really doesn't give me high hopes about the replacement either.
Already sent mine back to ebuyer. Had light bleed. So annoying. Rushed them out I think.

[Q] Nexus 7 doesn't turn or and flickering screen when recharging

Ok, so my friend has a problem with his Nexus 7. The device doesn't turn or and the screen flicker's if it's plug to the wall. This started happening after he dropped it on the floor, so it has to be some kind of hardware issue. My first thought's are that the panel has broken, is there a way to confirm this when I open the device? Or do you guys have some other thoughts, thanks in advance!
I have the same problem as you, and I am yet to find a solution. Mine just got stuck booting one day and then a day later wouldn't switch on at all and only get screen flickers when you plug it into a charger.
If we knew what had gone wrong, we might be able to fix it?

Check battery cable
You must open device and check if battery cable got loose...
I have the same problem, i just posted about it in my own thread. My N7 was never dropped. I tried reseating the battery cable. No luck.
We've got a sticky just for this issue.

The difference between what is in this thread and the sticky is the flickering. I haven't seen any mention of people have flickering screens. In my case, the stick is the first place i went and i tried every recommendation offered.
My screen flickered and was snowy. Just didn't mention it.
If you tried all of the fixes in the OP, then I agree you are in a different problem space.
Good luck with it.

[Q] replaced screen on xt912, wont power on

yeah its a first time question for me and I'm sorry if it has been covered, I did try to find it. So i replacdd a display on the the deivce and it will not power on or give any sign of life. I checked with my meter and its got roughly 3.5 volts which is good enough to power. any one have an experience with this and know the correct method of getting it to power on? tried volume down and power for ten seconds didnt work. I've got it on the oem charger now even though it has a charge.
Wrong forum... But maybe your digitizer isn't plugged in correctly? Our the digitizer was crack in the process of replacing it
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
Yea, I have replaced several on the xt910/912 may be an issue with the install check the ribbons for tears... ensure that there both seated correctly.. replace the metal cover over the connectors... did you replace the full housing or just the digitizer/ screen? Or Item may be defective... when plugged in you should still see the led flash green if all is well with the battery ( the ones I have done did)...

re: answers
yes, i should have seen some sign of life is what i was thinking as well. i replaced the whole bezel. no flash no green light and no idea. I do apologize for wrong forumn.only thing i can think of is that when taking the motherboard off the back of the display is maybe something above got damaged. i thank you both for your answers. is there a heat rip sensor on this model that would cause it to go into protected mode even though it was totally disassembled? i had used my separater to warm the adhesive to make removal of the baord easier
I'm unsure about the sensor... but I use a heat gun as well and never had issues with the Motorola's... i have 3 here one still on GB and the other two on jb.. if you know of a way to get me a shipping label I could send ya one if you think its the logic board or battery (screens are broken)...

First thing to check is to pop the back off and make sure your battery is fully plugged-in and seated firmly.

Remove the cover from the back of the device, and make sure the battery is plugged in firmly. A loose connection can cause these symptoms (this happened to me in the past).
This guide will show you how to remove the back cover, and has nice pics of the battery plug. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Nexus+7+Battery+Replacement/9895
You don't actually need a specific tool, you can just use your fingernails (if they are long enough) or any small, thin object to help pry it open. It's easy, just take your time and don't force it, don't want to break anything

Well, that might be why it was sold on ebay in the first place, or it may have been damaged in shipping. You should check out swappa.com for used tablets next time, I've had great experiences with sellers there.
You can always try a factory reset, or using a battery calibration app, or installing a custom ROM/kernel, and see if there's any changes.
It also may just need a new battery, though that involves spending more money just to test the theory. It may be worth a shot though.
That's all I've got, if none of the above resolves the issue, it's likely just a defect with the device.
Good luck.
