[Q] Planning to purchase the phone (Some answers needed) - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I went from a Note 2, to an Xperia Z and now I am considering the S4.
A few questions:
1) The whites on the Note 2 were yellowish. How are the whites on the S4 compared to previous gen devices?
2) There were black splotches on the amoled screen of the note 2, which I noticed when the screen is displaying a black image in a completely dark room. I noticed that this was normal for amoled screens. How is it on the S4?
3) How is the Bluetooth audio quality compared to the note 2 (The note 2 uses a Wolfson audio chip)

1, I too have used note 2 white and it gets little yellow after few days
but in S4 its better then that as it has a different texture on the back panel which looks good and does not loose its whiteness
2, There are no issues with the screen its immaculate u ll love using over N2 for sure
3, Bluetooth i havenot used so cant say however S4 has better audio chip
saw the tweet from supercurio. Wm5102 on 9500 has a very powerful Headphone amplifier

Thank you for answering. Good to know
However, for number 1, I meant the whites on the screen not the body
How does the display, display white colored images? Are the whites, white, or greyish, or yellowish?

Is the Note 2 Screen inferior to the S3?

My brother owns an S3 and I own a note 2. When we put it side by side, his S3 does indeed look sharper than my Note 2. A tech savvy friend of mine told me that it was because the S3 has a smaller screen with the same number of pixels as the Note 2. Therefore, the S3 is sharper in that sense as there are more pixels per inch of the phone.
The Note 2 on the other hand is supposed to use an rgb matrix pattern as opposed to the S3 which uses a pentile display. RGB is supposed to be superior to the pentile method for color reproduction and sharpness so in that sense the Note 2 actually makes up for a bit of lost ground when compared to the S3 having more pixels per inch of the screen.
There's a detailed comparison here..
Anyway, thats about as far as I could understand from my friend but from my own personal experience, yes you will notice the S3 to be sharper somewhat when compared to the Note 2 but the difference isn't very glaring either unless you put them side by side and start nit picking on each part of the screen.

I have both devices and it's fair to say this is a spot on explanation, the Note 2 feels softer one tip is try reducing your ro.sf.lcd_density to 300 on the note 2 makes everything a bit smaller and a bit sharper IMO.
SIII does definitely look sharper because of the above said reason.
I like the note 2 screen better becaus it's not pentile and to me looks sharper then the s3 screen.

The size and the screen issue are actually stopping me from upgrading... Tempting though.

+1. To my eyes, the S3 screen doesn't look near as good as the Note 2's. I think the Note 2 has the best mobile display at this time. The only thing that could make it better is if it was 1080p with the RGB arrangement. Hopefully we get the bump in res on the Note 3.

Check that video out. Just skip in where the display is tackled. Its explained everything there. After watching the whole video, im inlove with this saxy beast more!

In a word, no.
That's so weird, my s3 screen doesn't look nearly as good as my note does.

Yea seriously are people getting different panels for their S3's than my previous one?
I had an international GT-I9300 S3, and before that I had the international GT-N7000 Note 1.
Out of the 3, the Note 2 is by far the best display, followed by the Note 1 and last would be my S3.
When I switched from the Note 1 to the S3, I immediately was a little disappointed, the S3's screen just wasn't as sharp as the Note 1 and the Note 2's display is far superior the the Note 1.
Tech OCD rears it's ugly head yet again.
The screen on the Note II is stunning. End of thread.
Note screen it's nicer, I've had both and it finely is sharper for text and the colours seem nicer

All made by Samsung
S3 or Note 2 , their screens are all made by samsung, just RGB is different from pentile
But in my opinion these two screens look almost the same

[Q] So i9500 AOSP dev is doomed?

I was tempted to switch from HTC One to S4 but in my country we have only i9500,also as I noticed there are no CM,PAC,Carbon,MIUI or Liquidsmooth roms for i9500 while i9505 looks way more rich in roms...will this situation be like that forever?

The One is incredibly sexy in all levels but even being very careful with it,it got some scratches and chip in the borders (aluminum downside).
I heard the S4 doesn't need a cover and doesn't have these problems

Haha okay! I was also thinking about buying the HTC one cuz I love Super LCD screens! they are so sharp and have realistic colors! S4 is also 1080p but its not as sharp as the One. But true, the durability of the S4 is very high:laugh:

Though some reports about random bricking with S4 as well as flickering screens is not reassuring.
Some people reported chipping of the S4 chrome borders...
I am a true "One to S4 switcher". Believe me, you won't be happy with the manufacturing quality of HTC I replaced my One 3 times and never got a perfectly manufactured phone (most annoying thing was stuck / dead pixels in every phone), which lead me to buy Galaxy S4 (Exynos).
I didn't feel much of screen (im terms of clarity) differences between HTC One and Galaxy S4, only note-worthy thing is the highest brightness on the HTC One, which is dramatically higher as compared to S4 (I know both LCD and SAMOLED have huge differences in terms of brightness and Blacks and Whites) moreover both phones perform roughly the same under sunlight (HTC One just offering slightly more readability under direct sunlight).
How can the HTC One be sharper, when both phones are above "retina" density? You can't spot individual pixels on any of those screens.
HTC One's screen is brighter, as said, and the SGS4 is more vibrant, has better blacks and contrast and with the perseus kernel (on i9500) you can calibrate colors to very accurate ones. Perseus on SGS3 already achieved better colors than the iphone 5 (which were the most accurate on a phone iirc), not subjectively, but actually done and measured with color calibration equipment. The same guy calibrated the SGS4 screen with the same equipment, and got some great results as well. (and you can even saturate those calibrated values, if you want a punchier screen).
Also, the SGS4 screen is bigger and thus better for multimedia and browsing. It has less brightness than the HTC One screen, but amoled has lower screen reflectance, so it doesn't look bad on sunlight, it's still less legibility than the HTC One I think, but it's not as bad as most other phones.
I don't know!
Sometimes I want to jump into the S4 train and sometimes I say to myself the One has better things like louder ringtones, more prestige look a la iphone 5...
Yesterday my gf when hearing some Nirvana and Metallica songs on the stereo speakers said ''wow your phone has very good sound quality''.
The sexy thing in the S4 is the very thin bezel,it feels like all the face is a screen.
The sides are also very nice looking with the matte metal look.
Is it true the false metal ring on the S4 is also very prone to small scratches and chipping?

S4 screen dull in front of Note 3

Today I saw both s4 and note 3 in showroom side by side and s4 felt quite dull well nite 3 was much brighter abd sharper but afaik s4 has 441 ppi and note 3 has 386ppi tgen why N3 is better than S4 in viewing
For this thing I think I shld change my S4 to N3 coz it has better screen and bigger screen
Anybody reviews
I think you over exaggerating.
I played with a note 3 and in other hand my s4(indoor) and what do you mean sharper? In what way ? You can't see pixels on either of them.
Maybe is a very very little bit brighter but that's it.
Calling s4's screen dull is too much... I mean for f*sake even GS1 and GS2 screens are amazing compared to many devices out there today
Did they both have the same screen settings and brightness?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yup
I don't think that's the case. If display is sharper on one device then it's on S4. S4 have 441 ppi density but Note 3 have 386 ppi density so S4 screen have more clearer then Note 3. Although it's hardly noticeable.
I think it's more of display settings then display itself.
Auto adjust screen tone reduces the brightness of whites dramatically even on full brightness.

yellow tent screen .. white color is more yellowish

I have the note 3 n900 and i notice that the white color on the screen has an obvious yellow tint so i compare it with galaxy tab 2 10 inch and galaxy mega 5.8 inch ... and both devices shows the white color like a normal white not having this yellow tent on white color like my note 3 and the white color is more bright than my note 3 ... and i set the screen mod to dynamic mod cause its the least yellow tint of all other mods like standard or even adaptive mod.. so i don't know ... is it only my device or all note 3 devices are like that and do u compare its screen it with other samsung devicrs

I had a Galaxy S2, had yellowish tint on the display. I am unsure whether it had two variants or not, but I had the one which was officially sold in my country.
I had a Note 2, Exynos, yellowish tint was there but in less extent.
I had an S4, Exynos, there was almost no yellowish tint, at least that's what I can remember.
Now I have a Note 3, I don't have any yellowish tint at all, and I use movie mode. Turning on Adapt display or Dynamic makes the screen irritatingly cool/bluish. Honestly I could not be more happy with a phone's colour reproduction.
However I read a lot, and I saw that a lot of people possessing the Exynos variant, which is yours, are having this problem on GSMArena Note 3 page. You can see for yourself, just go back few pages. I think it has something to do with Exynos models only? Cause I have never heard a person having a Snapdragon variant complaining about this issue.
You can ask Samsung CC to replace the phone, only if you can show them how a display without any tint looks like, cause they are both arrogant and dumb.
Thanks 4 ur reply

Keep in mind that the Tab and Mega are LCD, not AMOLED. LCD has a pale blue hue, whereas AMOLED is much, much more saturated.
You really should compare it to another N900 unit, or an N9005.
As mentioned above, this is a problem that occurs on the Exynos version, but not the Snapdragon.
Thanks

Slight yellowish tint to screen?

Need some advice, I am coming from an iPhone 6 to an S5, I notice on the S5 the whites aren't bright white like they are on the iPhone, its got a slight yellowish tone to it. Is this normal or what happens with Amoled compared to iPhone
Having never owned an iPhone I can't comment about differences.....
Did you buy the S5 new?
If not, then yes, seeing a yellowish tint on the screen is fairly normal, I've owned 2 devices with an amoled screen (S2 & S5) and both started out with great looking screen colours.....but both, over time, began to aquire this yellow tint. (My wife has a Note 4, and the tint *and* burn in on her screen is horrendous) There are apps on the play store that *claim* to be able to sort it out.....but they are ineffective at best.
The way I see it is you have 2 choices....
1) you learn to live with it.
2) you replace the screen and wait for it to happen again.
