I am considering buying the 4G, international version of the S4 and have two question about it for owners.
1) Is there a way of telling by looking at the device, its box, or an option within the settings which market/region the phone was intended to be sold in? I've been assured by a seller than it is a version for my region (I'm concerned about warranty), but want to make certain upon receipt that it isn't an Asian version.
2) When the S4 Google Edition is released will it be possible to flash the software for that device straight onto the 4G, international S4 and use it without Touchwiz?

1. So you're saying that the app will display the customer service code, which will help me to work out what region the phone was intended for.
2. Was my second question a stupid one?
1. Yep, some more detail on CSC codes here : http://droidviews.com/2012/how-to-change-csc-in-samsung-galaxy-phones/

Thanks very much for your quick reply. So, if I was to buy a sim free version of the phone from Amazon, I could edit the CSC code to match that of a particular carrier in my country and download their firmware for the phone? For example if they released an update before the unlocked version of the phone received the update?

I tried both methods but none of them worked :/
some suggestions...
Sorry you're having this trouble, qnfk... and that your welcome here by the above poster was not only less than friendly, it was unhelpful, since the solutions he recommended are for a different problem, namely unlocking a carrier lock not the region lock. Your phone is likely to have only one or the other.
I noticed that you have found the thread, Region Lock Unlocking for i9500 S4, though it hasn't become very active yet.
I have 3 suggestions for you:
A. Type *#12580*369# on your phone to check RF Cal for the date of manufacture and *#1234# for the firmware version codes for AP, CP & CSC.
B. Follow these directions to access the MCC blacklist in your device's customer.xml file:

C. Read this entire thread: Check the countries that you can’t use your galaxy S4 in. Consider posting your questions there with the above information. It's a fairly active thread and I'm sure you'd be welcome... in fact, you'll find that the OP referenced your situation last week.
Your circumstances are unusual since Asian phones are officially supposed to be region unlocked. If you do post on that thread, you might consider also providing information about the background of your phone, such as where you bought it, how the seller represented its origin to you and whether or not it had a region-lock sticker on the box.
Good Luck!

almost giving up on GT-I9500
I have a GT-I9500 that is Region locked(Middle East),I tried almost everything but nothing works for me.....H*ll I don't mind paying for unlocking codes, but i read somewhere that Region Locked is different,so buying unlocking codes might not really work, the phone comes with the new bootloader(phone made 2013.10.13),pls if anybody has a solution/suggestion or even a reliable website that can provide genuine "Region Unlocking codes" should share.
what i ve tried so far but still did not work
1-Region unlock app by @Chainfire
2-Try entering service mode by *#0011#
3-Root and install a custom rom(Crash Rom)
4-Terminal Emulator (to calculate unlock codes)
5-Change the Modem (tried all the modems, more than 10)
If anybody can help, pls kindly assist....
Thank you all

What if the RF Cal version says not active?
I've Boughten an unlocked Galaxy Note 3 SM-9005 on ebay. To use for straight talk in the United States. The first sim card i had in it was a normal sized sim card that i had cut (instead of micro) And after fiddling this sim card had worked from 4-5 days. Then i started to get the error message "No service" and "Not registered on Network" I had figured the sim was probably the reason to why i was not being allowed to call or message. So i bought another brand new micro sim card. And then put that in (Again with straight talk) and i am still unable to call or message. I have checked my imei number and it is the same as the one on the back of the phone. I have tried to re-register on the network within the settings on the phone. With no luck whatsoever. I have noticed that the CSC is not correct for the united states. And in hopes of fixing it i rooted and installed a custom rom. (IMEI is still the same)
If someone could please help...I am Stumped[/FONT]

Given the details that you have provided so far the most likely scenarios that I see are:
1) there is a mechanical problem on the SIM contact
2) the seller was on some form of a contract and has reported the phone stolen, so the IMEI is now blocked on some or all carriers.
DO NOT MINGLE WITH THE FIRMWARE at this point (and also disable any automatic updates of the firmware).
Also if you want further technical info (and not just guesswork) you should post the output from *#1234#

It really does depend on the issues xclub has brought up.
If it was me, I'd rule out SIM issue (the card itself) due to having a replacement, although it could be an issue with the SIM Tray.
And if it is used, then yes it is possible that it has been blocked by the original owner.
EDIT : Do you guys in the US have an IMEI checker for blocked IMEI's etc? in Europe we do it's called CHECK MEND.. Might be worth having a look or alternatively give your network a ring, they'll know for sure.

Ok so you have the same firmware as me, I am using BTU which is UK (I am UK) - So your CSC does indeed need changed to match you for US use - -- Firstly does your network support the available frequency required? (do you have LTE?) - If so you can change you CSC to your required region But another factor --- are you aware of region lock? has it been disabled that you know of? - this could cause some issues if it hasn't been deactivated - I'm not sure when changing CSC/firmware if it reactivates region locking or not
EDIT: I think only T-Mobile supports the N9005 in the US ( I could be wrong) --- Need a US user to chime in here I think to be 100% sure!!
Going with an Unknown carrier on CSC/FW- May not solve it

Don't see why not, plenty of people are buying them and plenty selling them.
majority of users have no idea what Knox is tbh, it's ultimately up to you if you disclose this to them or not.

That looks like EU version. Since somewhere else you mentioned that you rooted then the next thing to try is Region Lock Away:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470551
since the phone might now be "hit" by the EU region lock (an even simpler test would be to insert an EU SIM just to see if it registers on some network for roaming). If RegionLockAway fixes things you can then see what version of firmware you want in order to get LTE from your carrier.
If you want to sell the phone - being rooted might even be a plus, but having Knox 0x1 is certainly a major minus.
I did get region unlock and it did not work. And when i try to install the unknown firmware i am unable to flash it with odin i get all sorts of errors (I tried two of the unknowns) BTW thanks for the help
Please help, I flashed it to Android 5.0 and I did root for it and used region unlock app and still I face the same issue, please help me
I was an exchange student in Canada a while ago and I bought my galaxy s4 GT i9505 there, it was unlocked for other carriers, because I live in Brazil, so I bought it and a friend of mine tried to update the OS, but he did put the Google Edition OS on my phone, and now it doesn't recognize my sim card, it's like I can't catch the signal again, anyways, I have 2 main questions:

So,they won't make difference if I download them? All of the three up there are going to work on my phone? I'm a noob so...I'm afraid to brick it, and this cell phone is kinda expensive here in Brazil (freaking taxes )
I am very confused, Item is a refurb, has been rooted and therefore i want to put a clean stock rom on it, however i am getting mixed signals. phone is labelled g900f on the sticker and about phone, however i think this is fake, so the seller could sell it as a British model, I went in to recovery, the boot-loader stated it was a g900t. Also in the settings / about / there is a section referring to The united Emirates, which i have not ever seen before. I do believe it is a real s5 though as it has a snapdragon processor. Also the Imei number and serial number match the sticker, however i have a feeling this was somehow done by the seller, or who ever is supplying the seller who sold it to me. Other than that phone is working fine, but does not receive OTA updates. Also for some reason in the Ringtone section there are some built in AT&T ones.
can someone try to make sense of this, and tell me which exact Official ROM i would need to use.
Thanks.

does anyone know why there is a UAE section if this is supposed to be a American phone? also is this a At&t or tmobile original?
Whichever model is says in download mode is the correct model
A lot of models are modded to look like G900Fs as they are one of the most popular models, firmware, stickers etc etc can all be changed, Download mode can't be changed
thanks for the reply. if i reflash to a clean g900t marshmallow, what is the likelyhood it will corrupt the imei , network unlock status or anything like that, also will a g900t rom work fine in the Uk, i read on xda the g900t rom contains alot of branding and junk, can anyone confirm this?

Try it, as it seems to be a 900T, i would have to assume it will be ok.
hey i got my note 4 (N910P) from Texas and brought it to my home country India so i just read the message but i wanted to confirm that if i flash my sprint note 4 (N910P) with a different country rom or any other rom then will it be causing any problem ? i have unlocked it but i am now facing the issues with the carrier featured applications so it is unlocked and ya of course i will keep the model no. in mind for finding the rom then it will be good to go right if i flash it with the same model no. the country doesn't matter ? also tell me how can i become sure of that it is unlocked
TIA dude
You should probably ask this in the Note 4 forum of XDA...
And no, the country doesn't usually matter as long as you are using a ROM that wasn't edited by a carrier (a lot of ROMs on sammobile, for example).

Well, one simple way is get another active SIM card, insert it and try to call someone. If it works, it's unlocked. If there's an error, it's still carrier-locked. Other option is installing GalaxSim Unlock, and open it - if it offers to unlock your phone, it's still locked, but if it says anything like "lock is not present" or "SIM Lock Status: undefined", it's unlocked.
