I need help flashing a recovery on my phone. I'm a noob when it comes to rooting phones and such, I have tried many different things such as goomanager and using rom manager. If anyone could possibly explain in details on what to do, or link me to a possible solution
-I'm already perma rooted
-I have s-off
-I have a clockwork on the phone but whenever I click a section, it comes up blank (Rom manager)
-Installed recovery from ROM Manager

First off, this is the wrong section. But don't worry, everyone makes mistakes lol.
And now for the recovery. If you could get into your phone, like start it up and stuff. Install this app --> http://www.4ext.net/get.php?apk
Then install the app and open it. The rest is straight forward. It will install the recovery for you. Hope it helps.
Well if u installed recovery from ROM manager then u already flashed a recovery. U can boot into recovery from ROM manager app.
The link that notorious is providing is to flash a different recovery in the same way.

Yes of course but it might get a little difficult for someone that has never done it.
I was just saying since the recovery was already installed there was nothing more that needed to be done.

Dude, he was asking for HELP, not to be made fun of...
no, back to the question at hand. to root the mytouch 4g, you would need to follow one of the guides to rooting found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866175
that link also has links to all the other things you will need, but Ill provide them here as well for time's sake.
once you do that and have s-off, you will need to flash an alternate recovery to flash a rom. Normally, you would need to install rom manager to do this, then flash clockwork recovery through there, but to install gingerbread, it requires a special version of the recovery which is not officially supported by rom manager yet, so you will need to either install through fastboot (follow the steps provided here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852905 )
or else follow the instructions provided by TruBlue found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10670110#post10670110
once you have the right recovery installed, youll need to wipe data and caches, and then flash the gingerbread rom of your choice.
As for what apps you will need for all this: ROM Manager, as I mentioned (the premium version if you'd like to take advantage of CM built in nightly build update notifications). Titanium Backup (for backing up all your apps so you dont have to manually redownload them all, and have your app data intact on the new rom), and Root explorer (optional) for a root-enabled file manager.
Any further questions, feel free to send me a PM. Thanks to Tiger013 for compiling the list of everything, grankin for his Root how-to's, and TrueBlueDrew for his how to on install CWM 3x.

Currently there is no official support for the Shift from Koush (the guy who does CWM). Apparently it is in the works however.
YOu can use ROM managers, but you can't use it to directly install a recovery. There are some hurdles to jump over and hoops to jump through in order to do that.
See this post for directions to use it to flash recovery (but this is only AFTER perm-rooting the phone)

I just traded some one an HD7 for this MyTouch 4G.... Yayyy, back to Android ! Well, they already have it rooted and everything, but I like to start from scratch when I am modding my phones. I am coming from a Cliq so I'm not familiar with HTC. How should I go about unrooting the phone? And where should I start in the forum while trying to get familiar with modding this phone?
If it's already rooted, why unroot it? I would just make sure the latest recovery is installed, wipe it, and flash whatever ROM you want.
I'd you are looking to mod it... then you want to keep it rooted.
Its a good thing. You can even run the stock rom and make backups of all your apps and settings.
Root is good!

+1....As Rockstarar said, the pd15img makes you go back to being unrooted. The pd15img is the stock OS image and the thread will on that will explain how to flash it.
After that I'd say check out the "Guide to permaroot" thread, that will explain the process in getting rooted permanently. Next you should check out the thread for clockworkmod Recovery 3.0.0.6, thats a version that enables us to flash both 2.2 and 2.3 base roms. Alot of ppl miss that thread and end up using the wrong recovery to flash roms and as a result they get boot loops.
After that you're good to go! Got alot of options in the development section to choose from, so pick ur poison
I remember when I jus started this thing I had no clue where to start so that should give you a nice guideline on how to get going
Thanks!! I can't wait to get started =P.
Good luck!

I personally never liked CWM. Always loved Amon Ra's.
I prefer 4EXT because it has more options.

4EXT is very useful in 1 thing - it shows the partition sizes and free space. SUPER-useful.
In all the other aspects I don't care what to use, as long as both support the faster TAR backup.
(damn, I haven't been to recovery in ages... since VU 2.37 came out).
4EXT. More functional (switching back and forth on file systems) automatically adds ROM name on backups, and is themeable.
and the paid app is awesome.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I'm using MIUI.us, and its Updater works well with 4ext, while with CMW works only with ROM Manager. I switched to 4ext then.
I tried also the "touch" version, it works for me though I don't use it frequently.
4ext...
I double 4ext.
Yes, it has many features, and it is not necessary to use all of them.
However, some of them are really nice like the native ability to check md5sums, verify if there is storage space etc.
And the touch version- good bye to the volume up/down and power buttons It is something completely different, and makes it fun to flash things.
Flashing cwm/4ext back and forth is not a problem- I accidentally flashed cwm a couple of times via rom manager without noticing, flashed back 4ext.
4ext for the "wipe 'em all" option.
4ext, yes cwmr is polished more, but 4ext though has some new exciting possibilities. Like the touch ability hopefully coming soon.

Don't worry bricking your phone is unlikely unless you do something silly and don't follow the guides correctly.

Welcome to the section. Check out the guides for rooting and installing custom roms on your phone. There isn't really a big chance of getting your phone bricked. Once you root it, you'll feel alot safer because the worst thing that can happen is a bootloop. (Which can be repaired!)

okay i did all that now its stuck on the cyanogen loading screen what can i do
You've done the hard part don't worry its not broken. It should take around 5-10 minutes for first boot anyway so if its only been a minute or two and the rhythm of the boot logo is still turning smoothly and not pausing or restarting just leave it a little longer but if the logo freezes and restarts over and over this is called a bootloop. Easily fixed by rebooting into recovery again then select the wipe menu and wipe dalvik cache, cache and data then install your cm7 zip again. Everything should work then.

hmm i may have ruined it then for i just re did the installing of RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.14.405.2_R_Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.31_release_130814

yes i can still get to clockwork recovery by rebooting into hboot and going through recovery, ive also got the super user app in my apps
Just check in hboot that you are s-off and as you can still get recovery you're good to go, remember to wipe dalvik cache, cache and data when changing roms, if its an update you might get away with not wiping data sometimes. You'll get the hang of it soon enough. Before you flash cm7 again just run the backup in cwm then if it goes wrong again you can just restore.
