Galaxy S4 Ugrades - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi,
I earn the normal amount of money so I don't have the expenses to go out and buy a new phone every time one comes out. I got the S4 like a weeks ago and now I read that AT&T is extending their upgrade periods to 24 months not 20 months so I am asking if you guys think the S4 will last 2 years? I had the S2 prior and got a upgrade 18 months in to the period.
Thanks!

any phone will last 2 years if you take care of it. Will it keep up with new software and hardware? Unknown, but it depends on your requirements. My wife is happy with a Motorola Bravo - she likes the size and it does what she wants.
I have Q9M that works too, so if you are asking about will it physically last 2 years, then I don't see any reason why it won't - if you take care of it.

I see the S4 lasting more then as 2 years aslong as you are happy with it. I still have a htc tilt and wizard that are still kicking. They are slow but still gets the job done.

they will be supported by Samsung but what about AT&T? At&T S3 is still on 4.1.1...and no premium suite...all the carriers have released it.

Especially since the phone is so high end, I don't see any major breakthroughs that could really make this phone outdated for a loooong time. The only reason I upgraded from my S3 is because I could

They'll likely be supported by developers on XDA.

Come on man
We're on XDA here. There is no zero chance that the two most popular Android phones (S3/S4) will be ignored. Who cares if AT&T doesn't support it? I have faith in the devs here. :good:

Your upgrade will roll out about the time I expect to see super batteries and if we're lucky, OLED displays also.

No mention of Tmobile

http://store.wirexgroup.com/default.aspx?page=item+detail&itemcode=SILGALAXYS2BK
For the "Samsung Galaxy S 2 Attain(at&t), Function(Verizon), and Within(Sprint)", but nothing about T-Mobile.
I suppose 1this could be 1 of many things, either T-mobile just hasn't come up with a name yet, that case is for some reason not allowed to mention the T-mobile version, the t-mobile version will be physically different, T-mobile isn't actually getting one, etc...
I wouldn't personally assume the last one, but it still makes it seem like anyone with T-mobile will be waiting the longest. It also goes to show we will probably not be getting one phone to rule them all and have to deal with different versions, then again maybe they will just each be individually branded but development can still span each one but I am not holding my breath.
I dunno, just didn't see this posted and was yelling "Noooooo!" at my laptop so I figured I would risk being an ass hat by posting this.
It's okay, I was thinking the same thing when I didn't see a post. Anyway, I think this and the postponement of the May 24th event in NYC was the last straw for me. It probably means that it'll be at least a month before any carrier gets the SGSII and I just can't wait that long. I'm probably going to get the Sensation and just find alternative apps to cover the crappy codec support if it actually has decent audio hardware.
it could just mean 3 to 6 more month before we get the Tmobile version
just like the Nexus S
Sprint took like 6 month after, before they got theirs, which was just released by the way
I'm on T-Mobile too, and I sure hope they release within the next month or so... I've been waiting since the MWC show and thought it would be sooner, but since this will be my first smart phone, so I guess patience is the word of the day.
Or maybe in anticipation of the merger, t-mobile just decided to let at&t release it

Maybe no S2 for now but TMO is releasing the Samsung "Hawk" on June 8.

I'm waiting until the Sensation launches and if there's no solid launch date by then, that's it. My contract was over in February, I don't know why I still haven't jumped at getting a new phone yet and we're already in May.

by that time samsung will announce a new version of the phone. And then this same process starts again...!
If T-Mobile is delaying the release of the SGS2, they might as well skip it and be the first to release the SGS3.
Hopefully it just means the tmo version is slightly different and would require a different gel case. Samsung sold a **** tons of Vibrants so I hardly think tmo would skip out on this one. Does anyone know which carrier sold more sgs's? I tried searching for numbers but just keep coming up with overall sgs sales.

Hercules anyone? 4.5 screen is sick, I'm kinda jealous.
maybe thats the alternative to the SGS2 for T-Mob.
Yeah but its coming out in September, much later than when the other SGSII variants are supposed to arrive on other carriers. I wish they just left it alone like what they did in the design of the Vibrant and released it during the summer.
They are gonna get it I read somewhere were this Guy was told by a Samsung Rep that they are getting it he also said that vibrant had best sales so there is no question that there getting it cuz there trying to make money duhh

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000

ATT apps are now available from the Android market for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000. Guess the phone will be available from ATT shortly.

Yeah but who cares? AT&T versions are loaded with bloatware, they never have the phone in white (e.g. SG2), locked down, lack an FM radio and they remove the physical home button. Not worth getting an AT&T phone at all. Save up your pennies and buy an unlocked phone, it isn't that expensive.
I already bought the international version off contract. I'm not about to sign a contract just to get a crippled version of the device. I happen to like the physical Home button and lack of a search button; holding the Menu key has the same effect.
While there are bloatware/crapware issues and the 2 year lock in as clear disadvantages the fact that you can get a phone like the Note for $300 or more less than unlocked is a big plus for many. In addition, you have a much easier return location if you have a problem.
I almost picked up a Note last week but Newegg didn't have any in stock so I delayed my purchase. Given the issues some are reporting with the Note and the fact that any first of a kind phone is likely to have early issues I decided to hold off for a while.
One of my concerns with buying an imported phone is that you have no way of knowing if the phone they ship you was returned by someone else. This, perhaps more than anything else, is giving me pause about buying an imported model so soon after the phone is released.

The Note is not the Galaxy S2 and the AT&T Note version is not released,
so your points are not fact based on the note, you made an ass-umption.
Plus the lack of updates....
Unlocked Galaxy S2 on ATT I had 2 updates in 3 months.
Galaxy Touch on sprint? Desperately needed updates from the getgo...signals cut out all day long: NOTHING. Samsung sent it out. Sprints been sitting on it.
i almost got the galaxy note myself. If its coming to att then I might just wait. I'd love to have a warranty with it. I would also like to be able to play with it before I buy it. I'm just wondering if it does come to att will they let me keep my unlimitedplan from my iPhone.

Have you seen the AT&T ****rocket threads?
Have fun getting throttled after 1 day
As for the "speculation", no USA Sammy android phone has ever had a physical home button. AT&T also usually removes fm radios. But... if you want to pay $300 for a throttled, crippled Note with no ICS coverage for a long long time then have fun!

This is great news. Even for those that plan to or already have imported since Samsung will have a service center presence for the Note in the US.

We understand you trying to justify your recent $800 purchase, but let's try to be a little objective. I'd gladly save $500 on a phone by adding some bloatware or giving up a home button.

The import G-note will most likely have a better look over the att G-note. I just spent $750 on a white G-note n I think it was a good deal. I sold my iphone 4s for $550 n my dell streak for $200. so I really only paid $217 (cost of upgrading to phone 4s) for my G-Note. I do miss the US warrenty n the support if I would have gotten from att. if I done my math right I over paid about $100 for my G-note. But I got a white G-note n 3 to 4 months less waiting.

Wow... some people are taking this kinda personally, lol.
I'm planning to root that sucker and use a custom ROM, plus I've got the grandfathered unlimited data, so I'm psyched AT&T will apparently be offering the Note.
To be honest, if you can flash it and there is good xda dev support, there is no reason not to get a subsidized phone. It's just nice if something goes wrong in the first year to be able to mail it in and get it replaced. I have a service center in town, so Ican just go swap it out.

I won't be saving $500? Ok, $400? I pay less per month than you do with unlimited data and I'll hopefully be paying significantly less than you for this phone. Unless you're planning on changing carriers in the next two years you have no point.

REMINDER: Deadline to return your phone and keep unlimited data is approaching!

My phone shipped on the 3rd and I just went over to corporate verizon store and traded in my S3 for a Galaxy Nexus. Surprisingly the let me keep my unlimited data and just charged the 35 dollar restocking fee.
Remember that you can return the phone within 14 days of it shipping. AKA today is last day for people whose phone shipped on the 3rd. Also remember to be nice to the sales people
The sales rep next to me talked about how the reason the phone shipped late was because they where putting on the bootloader and that the sales reps had no idea it was locked when the phone shipped. When I asked him if were getting it unlocked he said hes too low level to know 0.o

Not exactly. With the Galaxy Nexus you have the full google + AOSP experience and the most developer support. Updates right after source drops, most ROMs, best CM support, etc...
The software on the Gnex gives it a huge plus.
The Galaxy S3 has touchwiz and updates take an extremely long time by samsung. Cyanogenmod usually gets nightlies for the new release but isn't stable for a while again and this can take a few months.
That said, the Galaxy Nexus is still a huge downgrade in terms of hardware.

[Q] Should I get this phone, even though it's an LG?

So, I have looked over the specs of this phone and even checked out the Nexus vs. other phones thread and it seems to be the best phone to get right now. However, after having my current phone an lg g2x for a while, I have lost faith in LG, so I am hesitant to buy another LG phone. And I can get this phone on contract for cheap, but that would require a renewed 2 year contract. Does it show that same symptoms of early EOL and halted official updates? Or can I be confident in buying this phone and it lasted at least 2 years?
And if I do end up buying this phone, who are the main devs to lookout for, so I know who to eventually thank and probably donate to.

This is not the g2x. That phone sucked ass. You will see no early end of life with a nexus. It will be supported officially longer than any other device and unofficial support for a long ass time as well. I would consider getting it from Google off contract and either save your upgrade for something else or ditch the contract. Most all the devs here should be checked out as they all do great work.

Thanks for the quick response, And hey, the g2x was a really good phone hardware wise, it's just there was no official support, it died because of lack of good software. And it was kept alive by the various devs at the g2x forum and if it wasn't for me destroying my phone, I would be still using it. Also, kinda in a family plan so I can't ditch contract and being a college student I would prefer to save on contract. And in the g2x forum we had a good handful of devs so everyone knew them, but here it is seems they are too many to keep track of.
I owned several g2x's when it was first released. Worst phone I ever had. I guess they worked the bugs out of it since I left it. Even if you get it from t mobile it will still get updates from Google. They are the same device. Cm, AOKP, pa, faux and morfic are all great.

I had the same doubts with LG before buying this phone. After scouring for every review out there, I made the decision and have not looked back since. The phone is and has met every single expectation that I had. Except for the one where the reviewer said the glass would break from extreme temperature changes. My glass back has been great, no cracks, just some minor scratches that you can't see unless you look for them.
In terms of official updates, since it's from Google, you'll receive updates as soon as Google releases them if not a few days to weeks later. So you should have no problems until a new phone comes out in 2 years. Many also consider going off contract like you said.
In terms of dev support, there's tons of dev support for the Nexus 4. But without me creating a bias towards any one dev, I'll leave you with an index so you can give each one a shot.

Looking for sound advice

Hey all. I'm coming to T Mobile within the next month (I've been on sprint for like 10 yrs). I've owned A LOT of android devices, including the galaxy nexus. Basically I'm torn here: I love stock android because it's the best and because development on it is incredible. I am tempted however by the note 3. I imagine dev support will also be strong for the note 3 and I just don't know which way to go. If I got one or two questions answered about the nexus 4 tho, it might help. That's where you all come in.
First and foremost, and I may be totally misunderstanding this but, is it true that this device has no lte? Or has that been remedied somehow? If it doesn't have lte, how is the data speed it DOES get? Secondly, and I suppose more generally, what do you think--if you were in my shoes--would you stick with the nexus, or jump to the note 3?
Thanks in advance, really appreciate it!

Okay... Here's my two cents... I have an lte nexus from vzw... it is the best android I've ever had..... The g3 has lte with vzw and I would think the same with sprint or T-Mobile because their towers are sometimes shared... however.... Any unlimited data is where it's at... And I am grandfathered into ud from Verizon.. So I may be a bad reference on this... but the g3 should be sweet for ya

T-mobile USA, you can achieve LTE by simply flashing an older radio. I would say battery life is enough but not the best, you will need to tweak it a bit with custom kernels etc. With my current tweaks, my battery lasts me about 2 days light usage. With medium - high usage, will last about a day.
I would choose N4 and use leftover money on accessories.

As I am sure you have seen by just skimming through the forum, LTE is capable on our phone since there are roms out there LTE based. The phone is relatively inexpensive at this time. Also whether LTE or 4G depending on your area speeds are great either way. KitKat is on its way and the use of Google Wallet is what will keep me using stock Google or at least the fact there are quite a few rom choices.
It's cool to hear everyone so far have the same opinion. I think I'm leaning towards the nexus. When I was on sprint and the nexus 4 came out I was SO pissed that only t mobile got it. Now, this is like poetic justice that I'm able to finally have it...lol.
Just curious, I may get the same device for my wife--she's not into the whole rooting and running custom rom game tho, so for her sake, is the data fast enough?

Keep in mind that the Nexus 5 is going to be announced by the end of the month

You think it'll be in October? I heard November--but yeah, the thought did cross my mind. How long is t mobile's return policy?

Well, they are usually announced late October, and launched early November. I'm not really sure how long T-Mobile's return policy is, I am on prepaid and I got my Nexus 4 from Google way back last November.

Having you two guys' opinion REALLY means a lot. I believe I've ran mods/roms made by at least one of you, if not both. Thanks again.

Yeah, I'm gonna go with the monthly installment of like $14 for the nexus. I'm kinda hoping that if I get it and the 5 comes out in the next 30 days, they'll let me exchange it.
