[Q] Questions Before Purchase - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thinking about purchasing a Nexus 4 for my wife to use. We have used Windows mobile smart phones for year without a data plans. I know what is the point? That is the plan for her Nexus 4 anyway for right now. Really the only reason I am going with the Nexus 4 is because I can buy it straight from Google instead of taking a chance on ebay. I have been really lucky in the past on ebay. I do have a couple of questions.
1. Is it safe to assume that the phone comes carrier unlocked for AT&T & T-Mobile?
2. The phone specs say it is only 3G but I did read 4G can be enabled in the setting?
3. Is it possible to turn off the data connection while still being able to make calls?
4. Since we have been using Windows Mobile all our contacts, calendar, & email go through Outlook. Is there a way to make Outlook & Google sync? We would need to get all of her contacts into the Nexus 4. I know for calendar appointment you can forward those to you Hotmail or Outlook.com email & Google will play nice. I am not too concerned about email at this point.
I have been using Freedompop for a data connection on my Nexus 7 & have been pleased with it. I might do that for her.
Thanks in advance.

1. Yes, carrier unlocked. Should be noted that it uses GSM, so you can't use it on Verizon. Just FYI.
2. Depends on your definition of 4G. Officially, it can support up to HSPA+, which some carriers like to say is 4G, but I don't view it as such. It's more like 3.5G. Unofficially, you can get LTE working with the phone, but the coverage is sparse and you'd have to flash an old radio to your phone. There are plenty of guides and coverage reports on these forums if you are really interested.
3. Yes, there is a setting in the options to turn off mobile data.
4. Yes. I think you can just download the Outlook app and it syncs your contacts to your phone, which is synced to your Google account so it would sync all contacts to both email accounts.

1. Yes even if bought from a carrier. If a salesman claims otherwise, he's lying.
2. There's no 4G LTE (officially). If you're willing to root and flash an older radio, you can enable LTE but it only works on one band and only TMobile supports it in the US. Also, it drains battery really fast. 3G is good enough.
3. Yes. Data does not affect regular GSM calls in any way. Also, if you don't have a data plan, then the data connection won't even be active.
4. Yes - however I still recommend manually importing everything into a Google account. It makes things easier in the future if you change to another Android device.
Anyway, if you're thinking about adding a data plan and want to keep the monthly bill low, consider looking at T-Mobile USA's $30/month prepaid plan with unlimited data.

So, there is no to add/sync contacts to a Google account with manually entering everything?

Using a home computer you can import them from just about any type of email once you create your Gmail account

myTouch 3G without a data plan

I have been using my new mytouch without a data plan for about a week now. I had data when I activated the phone (didn't sign up for it, but was able to connect), but they have since blocked it. Everything works fine without a data plan except for one thing - MMS. MMS is not working for me now, and I suspect its because I don't have a data plan. I tried changing around APN settings, but haven't managed to find a combination that works. Anyone have any ideas on work around?
So that is weird because technically, without data, you should only get mms / sms and phone.
mms uses the data connection
MMS messages need the data connection to work. SMS messages should work without a data connection since they are transmitted over the signaling portion of the cell channel.
Without the data plan MMS will not work.
Why then did MMS work on my T-Mobile Dash without a data plan?
Dash was a different phone
Windows Mobile on the dash handled data differently than the android software, plus the network systems have been changed to recognize data phones and require the correct data plans.
The Dash was not supposed to get MMS without a data plan but it worked as long as you could connect to T-zones.
Wi-fi works but to get the most of this phone the $24.99 plan is required.
yea i had the same thing the data worked over 3g for about a day. u can buy the phone form walmart and u will not have to to get the 24.99 data plan i just told them i have it on another line.
So...you can have a PDA/Smartphone, and not get hit with the additional cost of a data plan. Is this where you'd need a "unlocked" phone?

to view MMS without a data plan? No cuz an unlocked phone only allows you to use the phone with other carriers.
is there anyway to activate it without dataplan simcard....? with wifi same like g1
I think that myTouch "need" simcard with data plan to activate it. only wifi is impossible to activate.
However, I've another question. Is it possible to use this phone when I have no Internet conneciton (wifi/2G/3G)? I just need to use if for making a call.
yes. if your mytouch 3g is alrady activated (needs sim cardwith data plan for that), you can SMS and make phonecalls and check voicemail (visual voicemail does need data tho) without any data connection, just like normal cellphones.
OK folks. For those of you that missed it. The My Touch has to be activated using a sim card with a data plan attached. Once that is done, you don't need data. MMS on the MyTouch runs through the data portion of the network. Yot car root the phone, load up a different recovery image like Cyanogen or Amon ra's, and no more need to activate that handheld again. As for MMS, no fix for that. You have to have data to send an MMS. Large text, Picture, Or video messages will not work on a text package alone. A "large" text message is about 133 characters or more. Don't realy remember to well these days. The phone was designed around a data connection. Without it, you're gonna have issues.
Is there a List?
Is there a list of phones that MMS won't work or other features are disabled? The G1 used to not need data now T-mobile say's it does? so if I was to get a G1 without data is MMS gone? Curious about the Nokia nuron or nexus 1 is anything disabled without data?
I want to get a nice phone preferably with wifi but no data plan what is my best option a list of phones that work 100% without Data would be very cool...
Need to know my options so I can start trying to get a deal on the phone I select.
Thanks

No not really. the $10 Unlimited web for phone data plan works. Just need to tweak around the apn settings.
I have also seen some forums that included that a 5.99$ Tzone data plan also work with mytouch 3g. However it is difficult to get that plan.
After activating and sim unlocking the phone, If I ever factory data reset, would I have to activate it again with a Tmobile sim card?
Now I am confused.
I have a MyTouch3g from t-mobile. I bought it used so I did not need to get the data plan to activate it, however, picture messages still work just fine for me, as do video. I would like to know why.

Are you getting charged for data usage? AFAIK all MMS has to go over towers so that the carriers network can authenticate the phone they're are coming from, but I could be wrong.

HD2 Data questions?

I ordered a HD2, And am on AT&T. Wouldnt mind killing my 30$ data plan, is there any way to stop it from connecting, and can AT&T tell I have a smart phone?

to answer your question first, yes you can cancel your data plan and stop the HD2 from connecting to ATT data (by not setting up your device during your first setup, or you can just delete the media net settings after setup is complete. i.e. selected AT&T as your network during the first boot up).
AT&T would not recognize your device, as it is not listed in theit IMEI bank under AT&T's system. (you can just tell the representative that you have an old flip phone, if they ever call you to get the imei of your phone since it is not going to appear in their system or at the time that you cancel your data service, as i am sure they will ask you why are you terminating the iphone plan). so make sure you have an old cingular or At&t phone that you can give out the IMEI when you made the call. (This will also benefit you in the future, if you ever decided to get a medianet unlimited for $15.00 which is the perfect data plan for HD2 under AT&T since your HD2 (assuming that it is a T8585 or a Tmobile brand phone and HSDPA or 3G will not be supported.)
Im sorry but i just don't see the use of having a device such as the HD2 without using the data. Im sure that you are aware that HD2's features such as weather, maps, facebook, etc.. require's an internet connection right??? so if you decided to cancel your plan, you can only be connected thru Wifi or if ever you permit, AT&T pay per use is extremely expensive.
1Cent = 1KB
opening yahoo.com webpage = assuming 1,024KB = 1MB = $1.00
so think about it really good if i were you.
cheers
I think one problem is that the T-mo HD2's are showing up as Blackberries so they are going to force the $30 data plan regardless. I'm 100% positive they think I have a blackberry but I'm hoping that someone can tell me that they don't enforce the $30 plan in this instance?

[Q] Is it possible to use MyTouch 4g without a data plan?

I would like to give my MyTouch 4g to my mom who is also on Tmobile. However, her plan doesn't include data. Is it possible to use the phone with her plan without racking up data charges? I'd essentially like to disable data over Tmobile and only use it over wifi. Can that be done? If so, how?
System settings/Wireless and network settings/ mobile networks/ uncheck data enabled.
This is for CM7 not sure about stock as I have never used it.

Turn off mobile data in quick settings in the notification bar
Sent from my T-Mobile MyTouch 4g
I tried turning off mobile networks in the quick settings and it mostly worked. However, a few minutes after I turned it off, the 4G sign came on and I was able to browse the internet. This only lasted for a minute or two and then I wasn't able to connect again. Any ideas what was going on?
I'll hand off the phone for now and run the experiment myself. I'll report if I notice data usage again.
If her plan doesn't have data, it wouldn't connect to data when she puts her sim in. My son has a Samsung Vibrant and doesn't have data on his line under our family plan and he's been that way for the past 3 years. So I wouldn't worry.

Yea I used a HTC magic without a data plan for a while. Carriers that say you must have a data plan with a smart phone are stupid. Don't listen to them.

You don't need it the data SOC for use the phone that only carrier advice to gain more money so relax even if the H, 3G, E appear that mean the device(phone) is trying to connect but wolr no go thru bc the required service does not exist on your TMO acount

[Q] grooveip and n7hspa

Hi everyone-
I have a nexus 7 hspa and am posting because I am getting ready to travel with it and want have fun but be safe.
1. I use the voip feature with a paid version of grooveip and am trialling it as my primary phone. I purchased the hspa version because I didnt want to rely on being near accessible wifi to make a call. Currently when I am within wifi range, it works great, although there is not the spontaneity associated with walking around talking on a phone.. I recently activated a $30 tmobile data plan and am somewhat confused. Will grooveip automatically check for both data and wifi and move to whatever is available? When I activated the $30 dollar service I got a telephone number that I have added to google voice, yet all calls seem to keep going through my old google voice number. What am I missing?
2.I have security concerns about walking around with a gps signal open and plan to travel with both data and wifi off unless I need them. Can the n7 be tracked even when I turn off the wifi, location and data plan services? With a cellphone, if I had these concerns I would simply pull out the battery, that is not possible with this device.
3. I will be using a lot of public wifi. Is there a vpn app that will automatically engage when grooveip is enabled or will it always be a two-step process of opening the vpn then opening grooveip to flow through it?
3. How does this scenario change if I am in europe? I plan to get a european micro-sim when traveling.
Thanks for any info you can offer.
First off the N7 will not work on T-Mobile's $30/mo plan. T-Mobile is blocking the N7 IMEI's. Secondly yes when you go out of range of wifi grooveip will switch to the HSPA connection.

Moto X pure with international wifi

I use my pure with t-mobile and will travel to Japan next month for 1 week. I read that wifi calling is not available on this phone at all. I plan to rent a portable hotspot anyhow, so does the sms or mms still work?
I was also checking out how to turn off data roaming on my phone and noticed it was already off but hasn't affected anything so far. Is that normal? I was hoping to at least have text working or would have to revert to email to keep in contact with my family if we separate.
I'm not entirely sure what you are asking here... SMS and MMS will need a connection to T-Mobile, the later will require data connection.
WiFi isn't really "international" or US or Japan, it is just WiFi... although there are some regulatory aspects to it (and channel restrictions in the US), your WiFi should work just fine in Japan. Before getting or renting a hotspot, check out where you are going and look into Softbank's Free WiFi Passport and Travel Japan WiFi, they require registration but can get you free WiFi at almost 500,000 locations in Japan for 2 weeks, there are also paid WiFi networks you can subscribe to. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2279.html
You might want to look into a Google Voice account, set it up before you go, or get a local SIM.
You could also change your T-Mobile plan to T-Mobile ONE and Simple Choice North America for the term you are there, it would likely cost more but offers free data, text and 20 cent/min voice calls.

By chance did you end up testing your data speeds in Japan? I am going there in a month and am trying to avoid a pocket wifi unless absolutely needed.

I leave on Friday and may end up getting a pocket wifi for 1 week @ $50. T-mobile said my data and all text is still unlimited over there but it caps at 3G speed and I prefer to to have something with us instead of looking for wifi hotspots. Voice calls are $.20/minute, so wifi will have to be enough.

Does google voice use data only? I have a Voice acct and if I rent a personal hotspot, that would work out nicely. I'm a little worried about not being able to make any voice calls in Japan since there's a T-mobile charge. But if our hotspot covers text and google voice, I think we're all set.
