My N4 battery discharging quickly - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

From past few weeks my N4 is discharging very quickly even when their no apps running background . If i don't use it for say 10 mins 5% of battery would have reduced . I haven't rooted it or done any modification ,its running on stock android .4.2.2 . I have tried factory reset still the same . I think its battery problem .

Could be but more often then not, its an app(s) causing the problem.

You may have a defective battery. My first Nexus 4 was like that.
But just to be safe, download Better Battery Stats and see if it reports any significant wakelocks.

When i checked in battery menu it shows that Maps is consuming 29-34% sometimes of the battery when i stop the app after sometime "Maps" app gets reactivated automatically . I think this is one of the reason .
I had enable backup up data to my gmail account . I have heard it could also be one of the factors why battery drains out quickly . Did LG replaced ur N4 first time when it had defective battery ?

install betterbatterystats, and read the FAQ on the xda thread. It´s full of tips on pinpointing battery drain.
You will see for example which apps are causing partial wakelocks or kernel wakelocks, and hence not allowing the phone to go into deep sleep ' which is where the battery is as close as possible to at rest.
Social apps tend to be configured default to be always on, with positioning etc, so go carefully through their settings.
The thing about Maps, sounds like you have either an app or a setting that is using location intensively (though the app itself should really appear). The way Android works, is that system apps like Maps will always restart, there is no way to kill them definitively. So you need to work out why it´s so active.
In short, install betterbatterystats and read that thread a bit, it´ll definitely help.

I can't comment on Gmail sync causing battery drain because I don't use Gmail.
Try to disable Latitude and see if that helps. Latitude, if you didn't know, is a Maps service that tracks your location constantly, so it wouldn't be unreasonable for your phone to be losing battery life like crazy if it's having trouble getting a GPS fix. Go to your Google account sync settings, choose Maps & Latitude, and then deactivate everything related to location reporting.
If that doesn't help, well, the surest fix I can think of is to disable Maps. Go to Settings > Apps, bring up Maps, and choose Disable.
My Nexus 4 was still within the 14-day return period, so Google replaced it.

OTA battery drain [XXJVK]

Are you having high battery drain with XXJVK firmware, or any other 2.2.1 firmware?
Does your Battery Use shows high CPU usage time on Android OS?
Then, check if you ever had Software Updates logged in! I noticed high battery usage once I logged in for OTA updates. Possibly, the device is retrying the connection to update server (which will always return timeout). You can see the Software Update service running all the time once you logged in.
If you have logged in Software Updates, go Settings->Applications->Manage Application->All->Software Update->Clear Data
Once you have logged out from Software Updates, the service disappears and personally, battery life doubled.
Thanks, i will try it!
It really could be the last chance to solve my idle-drain-prob.
i'll report back.
//edit: cleared data, service automatically stopped. i'll report back tomorrow if it solves my drain-thing.
Yup i had it running too since boot.. cleared data and will report back
Let's hope this is the answer. I've just took the drastic measure of doing a hard reset and now battery drain is pretty much zero and phone is idle when screen is off. I'll keep installing and enabling things and see what takes more battery.
Very interesting, I did check if there were any updates, and I suffered from random battery drain. At first I suspected Google Maps/Navigation, but you could be right. I started Maps, and Navigation, killed en cleared OTA, and I am monitoring the battery.
I have found that when i use the built in task manager to "clear memory" as soon as i have done that the battery drains alot faster and my android OS in battery stats goes through the roof (from 5% to something like 14%). It has been running fine since yesterday and i cleared memory only to find my battery went very quickly from 28% to 9%. I rebooted the device and all is well, i wont be using that option anymore
After installing jvk full I installed jve modem, rooted and did battery stats wipe and battery issues went away.
i lost 25% over night in airplane mode
background & sync = off.
after clearing dalvik cache & battery recalibration using battery calibrator from market i have 5-7% drain per night, and 30-40% per day... last battery time was 2d 19h 14m, with some calls, some games, some wi-fi and some hsdpa & with weather widget update every hour.
info
i9000 + JVK (repartition 512, with bootloader) + CF Root
P.S before clearing dalvik cache & battery recalibration with same use i have maximum battery life - 23h

There's something very wrong with your phone, either your battery's shot or there's a rogue program draining it, you shouldn't lose more than 1-2% overnight in airplane mode.
Same problem here. I hate this device...
Is it just me that think battery life is much better than on froyo?

I have no battery drain since i upgraded to jvk.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I'm seeing huge battery drain like others, sometimes more that 50% in a few hours doing absolutely nothing, wifi & 3G off and OS takes up to 60% of the battery usage. I never activated Automatice Updates since I flashed JVK. I am now on Darky's v10RC3. Only a few people are having such problems, most users say they are experiencing their best battery life ever.
I noticed that this drain always happened to me after I used Maps / Navigation. So I suspect them to create problems, maybe kicking off Software Update in a bad way. And rebooting stops the drain (it once took as long as a full flash for my phone to reboot...?).
So I have bought for $1 this nice app called Autostarts that shows which apps autostart, what triggers them to start and it is then possible to disable by app / event.
When I tap on Software Update, I can see that it kicks in on these occasions:
- After Startup
- Application installed
- Application removed
- SMS received
- Secret code entered
I disabled everything as well as for Map, so now it's no longer showing in running apps / processes.
Will follow this thread !

Spot on.
My Android OS battery usage is down to 3-5%.
Great find guys, Thanks a lot!
Also, a little suggestion here but I need someone to confirm.
Regarding Google Maps, I was having some trouble getting rid of Hotpot and Rate Places processes as they were constantly running for no reason and restart after I kill them. Another 13% drain. So yesterday I updated to Maps 5.3 and the processes are no longer there even though I've used Maps, Hotpot and Places
I upgraded with odin, repartition and bootloaders. Since now the battery life is very good, i can see the difference by eyes.

Battery

Hi all! I've had my note for about a month with no problems, but last night it went flat in 11 hours of no use.... The battery use screen shows that it was the OS with nothing else running!
I have this problem too, really need to know answers!
Do u leave ur wifi, packet data, gps and Bluetooth always on? This may be the problem, just use any battery saver tools and close unnecessary hardware

wifi - yes
packet data - dunno
gps - no
bluetooth - no
but i always have the same settings - why such a sudden drop in battery life?
Check if you are in 3G mode or 2G.... 2G save a lot battery

Installed anything just before the drain problem?
Pretty much all the problems I've had with battery drain have been traced to an app misbehaving. The battery stats info can be a bit misleading too - so don't trust that the OS itself is draining the juice... Its more likely to be some service app that doesn't show up a itself on the stats.
I've found Widget Locker a painful battery hog, for example, but it never shows up in my battery stats. Instead the Android OS, or whatever last write to the system log (log cat) show up as using all the power. Uninstalling WL always fixes the problem so I know its that app causing the drain.
Also, is that shield in your notifications bar some sort of battery saver?
If so it may be the cause not the saviour! I've read that the latest free version of Green Power tries to connect to ad-servers constantly and drains the battery double-quick. Apparently the premium version doesn't have this issue but you have to pay for it, obviously!
the issue is undoubtedly running services..you probably added an app or three that is high maintenance.
shut down and restart your phone and then without starting or using any apps, leave it overnight to get a better benchmark for battery life.
If still low, look at the running services, you may be staggered to see what amount of crap is running in the background..

Mine hasn't had any new apps installed and normally loses about 7 percent overnight. The shield in the pic is lookout which I've always used without a problem. I have restarted the phone so I'll see how it goes today. Its wierd because nothing has changed in use or apps so something must have hung and run it down.

some tips for better battery life.

Battery tip for people with bad battery life.

I've had bad battery life since I bought this phone on release day. I would get no more than 1.5-2 hours screen on time. The battery wouldn't last more than 12 hours. I've been messing around with it since then but still had bad battery life up until the last few days. Now I get 3.5-4 hours screen on time and I'm a moderate user.
Here is what I did:
1. Go to Google maps and then go to settings and untick anything that is ticked then click on "location reporting" and set it to do not update your location.
2. Go into the phone settings>location services and untick everything. When you want to use maps just turn on gps.
3. Get the app "battery calibration". First charge your phone to 100% and keep the charger plugged in and then go to the app and Press calibrate. Then use your phone till the battery is dead (turns off) and plug the charger in and let it charge to 100% while it is off.
Turn it on and then use it till the battery is dead again and charge while off to 100%.
I'm not saying this is guaranteed to work for you but it has for me.
You know my problem is I did that and when on Jb lib battery drain like crazy.Back on ICS no problem with battery can you explain that why on ICS calibration is not needed ???

First two items I agree on. GPS uses up a lot of battery, though from personal experience, it didn't dent my battery too much anyway as long as I don't have running apps using it.
But the last point. I believe those battery calibrations are actually useless. There was some article from the android team describing why.
The 2nd and 3rd are completely useless.
People who use gps know that even if you tick those location services, it only gets enabled when an app requires gps. Thua, battery is only lost if you use loads of navigation services. Unchecking those won't do any good.
Battery Caliberation is just what you can call the perfect reading that is shown on your status bar. Ultimately, whether you caliberate or not, battery gets charged upto 100% only. It won't surely exceed that.

A better idea:
Disable auto sync for accounts
Disable GPS (and wifi gps)
Disable auto backup of Gmail account
Set wifi sleep policy to “when plugged in”
Disable motion
Check your apps settings and disable useless background sync
Setup a static IP via your router.
I had issues with Chrome Sync - when enabled it prevented phone from going into deep sleep. So if you use Chrome and struggle with battery life this is one more thing to look at ...
Official Facebook app uses a lot of power and waking device for many times. Use browser for facebook or alternatives...You will see the diference !

good list id like to add:
freeze unused apps/battery hogs if used sparringly (with titanium backup)
set wifi to always on, switch off manually when not in use
firewall apps that dont require internet
I agree on the Facebook app. I will charge my phone to full, reboot it, and then let it sit overnight without using any apps and it will be one of my top processes in better battery stats. I really like using facebook simply for the picture and phone number syncing. I guess I could always go back to haxsync. On my Galaxy Nexus since I can't use facebook app to sync I just use mobile page and it definitely is better on battery life.
I've been trying to improve my battery life on 4.1.1 LIB as if I leave it on Wifi overnight with no use after reboot and full charge I'll see Deep Sleep at maybe 90% if I'm lucky. I'm losing almost a full hour of sleep time over the course of 7-8 hours. I think Facebook is part of it, also it seems to be worse when I use the S3's built in alarms.
Go into Settings -> Location and disable everything? You mean that we should disable:
1) Use wireless networks (location determined by wi-fi and/or mobile networks). I really don't see how this saves battery.
2) Use GPS satellites. This uses up battery ONLY when an app requires GPS (and when the icon shows).
3) Use sensor aiding. See above.
4) Location and Google Search. (only used to get your location when you're connected to GPS and/or wifi/mobile network).
I really don't see how this saves battery.
On a side note, one might want to freeze unwanted apps, not use too many live wallpapers, sync only when needed, and get rid of unwanted widgets. THAT might help.
Better tip. Use your phone with everything turned on as it was designed like I do and get 4 hours + screen on time, and 1 to 2 days useage depending on how much it's used.. simples...
I really don't see the point of buying a phone like this and turning everything off!
Google now won't work properly with all the location stuff switched off.
I always get through the day with everything turned on, in use power saving at work and switch off wifi that's it.
If the battery runs down have a back up waiting, galaxy s3 owners are always going on about it being good that our phone has a removable battery and iphone doesn't but there are still many people not happy that their battery runs down quick!

You're only turning of location services. Why does the phone need to know where you are 24/7? Just turn it on when you need to use maps or location. Not hard.
My car was designed to be driven, does that mean it should be left on while I'm not using it? Think about that.

1 install Android Assistant, search for it on Google play
2 check what apps are using the most Cpu time
3 decide what you need and what you can uninstall (careful).
Mind you, some apps may not appear in the list and be often using cpu time anyway.
In addition, try the app 'Greenify', it can help a lot in saving cpu time and energy, if you learn how to.use it.
Also (only for rooted devices) use Autorun manager or a similar app to select apps you want to prevent from starting at boot.
Hi
I will try tht thanks.
When i look with gsam the android(os kernel) is at 82%!
i think that causes the battery drain right now but dont know how to fix it

And appears you have bad reception. That could explain the battery drain.

Bad reception or low signal drains battery because the phone is actively looking for better signal or closer cell tower if you have 1 bar or 2 bars i would turn off data or switch to wifi if you're home. Another thing also another member above said Facebook and Facebook Messenger are FAMOUS like i mean Arnold Schwarznegger famous for draining the battery in the background because they are constantly doing shady stuff when you're not looking syncing messages or listening to push notifications, also that Instagram looks suspicious as hell, i don't have one but it looks weird in my eyes that it drains so much in less than an hour.
If i was in your place i would uninstall Facebook and FB Messenger and Instagram then charge the phone to 100 before bed and when you wake up you should have about 96% left if it's like 90% or lower then yeah an app is running in the background syncing and won't let your phone go to to sleep and my bet is on those 3 apps Or just turn off Sync from the pull down menu and see what happens, let us know here what you find out good luck

Battery doesn't deteriorate that fast unless you let the battery drain all the way to 0 multiple times. Lithium ion batteries have a finite amount of charges to them, it is best to keep the battery in the range of 20% to 80%.
Download an app called AccuBattery i have the full version you can find out the status of your battery and what's going on with it

I know, I am charge it when it goes to 5% and leave it to 96% . Every day I must charge my phone 2 times.
Also I have the full version of this application on my smartphone, it's just shows the battery life while having this app in the background but it keeps drain because it consume battery.
I will download it again and see the battery .
Weird cuz after flashing the official firmware nothing changes....

What do you see in 2 days of using this app ?
I noticed about 2 months ago my battery life started to tank as well. I've changed nothing about my device and when I turn data off in strictly use Wi-Fi it drains even faster even with sync all turned off

It doesn't show much it's been 2 days but something is killing your battery. I purchased the s10+ Exynos version and haven't done anything to it yet no apps installed just the firmware upgrade to CTF1 June1 security patch and battery is fine here so it must be software related.
Try to find an app called BetterBatteryStats i'm sure you heard of it that app will show you in detail who or what is preventing your phone from going into sleep even system apps are acting up it will show so try that i'm pretty sure an system app is acting up.
In my old days from kitkat and lollipop era the Google play services was always the problem back then.
I forgot also another app Wakelock Detector i don't know if that app is still around that's what i used to find out what was killing my battery on my Note 3 lol

Yeah I would install those apps i mentioned to the guy above to try and trace the cause i'm pretty sure an app or a system app is using wakelock to prevent the phone from going into sleep or deep sleep
Apps that use GPS are common and wifi as well. Lately i've been reading that last firmware update messed up the phone so one step at a time we'll find out who the culprit is
First time I see this popup.
I thought don't needed to run any commands or to be rooted.
Check this out guys. Is it bad ?
Do I need to change my battery ?
