[Q] Got it Wet - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I got my S4 wet last night. Dropped it in the sink. I immediately removed the battery, SIM and microSD, and wiped down the inside. The screen was working when I removed the battery, a few hours later, I put the battery back in and rebooted. The screen didn't work, but the LED worked and the startup sound played.
I got some rice and put some in a Ziplock bag with some of the rice. 24 hours later, I tried a reboot. Still no screen.
I'm not sure what to do next, as I've never gotten a phone wet before. Should I continue the rice treatment? Try something else? Hang it up and file an insurance claim?

You should have put it in the rice first and left it along for 24 hours. Might not have helped, but only giving it a few hours to dry was way too short. You're probably hosed at this point. Sorry to say.

I remember when the same thing happened to my old htc one x ...things everything worked for 10 minutes then it went haywire.Fortunately the rice trick worked for me because I didn't mess with it, and it only was submerged for a split second because my heart went from 0 to 100 lol..and my reflexes kicked in..I would keep it in rice for a couple days..if not then file a claim.

It usually takes few days to a week to dry out(evaporate) all liquids inside the components. Turning back on just within few hours was probably a bad move.

Give it a try let is rest a extra 24 hours make sure that the phone it totally submerged in the rice remove the battery ... time will tell good luck

Agreed..... patience pays in the long run

I looked at the thread title and had to check to see if I was in the right forum. :silly:
.....there....I said it!
Oh, and too bad about the phone. It's good you have insurance.

It Worked!
After a total of 48 hours in the full of uncooked rice...
The phone now turns on, and the screen works. Thanks for the feedback!

That's great news!

Wet vibrant

dropped it in the toilet. Took forever to get it up and running just to post this but its almost up to speed again. I was bootlooping like crazy over and over again hours after i pulled it out of its rice bath, which at least shows ots able tk power on. I held up and down on the bootloop until it popped into recovery, so i wiped everything-reinstalled trigger build 17-glitch-gapps. Now the color is completely effed up. Everything has etches of red in it. If i hit the power button to shut off the screen, it is completely snowed out when i turn it back on. I can live with these problems til i get a new phone. Wifi works but can u tell me if my antennae **** the bed because i have no service whatsoever now. No calls. No messages. No bars. Nothing. Can u guys help me out, or can wifi calling work if im supposed to have service and which rom it will work with, even if thats a possibility for me? Its a sad day for me guys.

Here's a simple tech tip. You throw it in a bag of uncooked rice for a day as soon as the problem happens and do NOT turn it on till it had time to pull the moisture. Then once you turn it on you store it in a Ziploc bag with silica in it.. for as long as you can.
I've fixed about 10 phones that way for friends. You turned it on, now you're screwed, but next time this would have certainly worked.

Tech tip: uncooked rice, then if your like me, take phone apart and drop certain pieces in the highest percent alcohol you can find ... if vodkas the highest you can find, youre not like me.

And if you're like ME.. vodka got you in trouble in the first place. I drunkenly spilled most of a mixed drink thru an iPhone 3g, Spilled an entire glass of wine on my MacBook keyboard.. and got drunk with a hammer and my last vibrant(that was the dumbest by far)
If it isn't water, like my rum+iPhone or wine+MacBook scenario then high alcohol wipes and a can of air(blow out tight items like Michael/speakers) are the best way to go.. only my vibrant didn't survive my abuse(hammers are VERY effective)

Water damage gs2

My girlfriend had her phone knocked out of her hand and into sink full of water. Did the usual and let it dry out, on powering on it did boot into the os but wouldn't detect the sim other than that it worked. Tried flashing stock rom but with same result. Had trouble with usb connector and now have the attached screen shot image. What does this mean. Have put new usb dock pcb in with same result. Thanks in advance.

I think I've seen this before after a bad flash. Try flashing with Odin.
Also make sure phone has dried out for a few days. Maybe even do the rice trick.

Put it in a tub and stick it on top of your radiator, if you have radiators and it fits.
To be honest though, after having switched it back on, any damage that is likely to have been done has probably been done.

Guys just for future reference I came across these amazing little bags that iFixit do. They're called "thirsty bags" which is supposed to do exactly what rice will do, just more convenient.
I've ordered 5 just to have in case of a rainy day which I might need one. Thought I'd let you know about them if you haven't heard of them already.

Did u disassemled for drying ? Before flash ?, it is better , first dis assemby then clean PCB with Isopropyl alcohol and dry with Hot air gun / hair draier.

My n4 died while I was sleeping!

Yep, I woke up to a completely unresponsive nexus 4. Tried charging it and nothing happens. Also tried holding the power button, using the bootloader, but nothing will make this phone turn on.
Noticed just a little while ago that the lense for the camera and flash have collected moisture inside. Could running the phone on battery until it ran out of power create moisture in the phone?
Sounds kinda crazy, but it's the only thing I can think of. There is no other reason why the phone would have moisture on the inside. It wasn't raining, nothing in my apartment is wet, and neither is the outside of the phone.
Was using stock rooted with matrix 2.0 kernel.
Update:
The moisture inside dried out so I tried powering the phone on and again it did nothing. Then I plugged it in and the led indicator turned solid red.
I didn't know what that meant so I called tech support and that guy was even more clueless than I was. He hasn't even heard of the blinking red led that some people from this forum got after running antutu overclocked, but at least they can return to stock and relock the bootloader.
He said I could get it replaced, but idk if they're gonna give me grief over being unlocked and rooted.
Update 2:
Now the red led no longer lights up when charging. The phone powers on and everything functions except the screen. Even the buzzing from the ear speaker is there like it was when the screen functioned.
I powered it down now in hope that it will work later tonight.
Does anyone have an idea of what could have caused this?
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda app-developers app
Oh man sorry to hear and see that. Maybe something burnt out inside and the smoke couldn't escape causing condensation? I dunno, but hope it gets sorted out..

There is a similar problem with nexus 7 running android 4.2 .. What that required for correction was holding the power button for 30 or more seconds .. I repeat 30 or more seconds and not mere 5 or 10 seconds . that trick worked for me .. Just give it a try
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I already tried that. For now I think I'll have to just let it dry.
I would still like to know why only the inside of the phone has moisture and nothing else.

Thanks for the wishful thinking, but I don't know how I'm gonna get it replaced if I can't return to stock and lock the bootloader.

If it isn't even turning on that might not even be a problem how would they know if rooted
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
True. I say you put it in an airtight container with some dessicant and see if that helps the moisture. If not, give it a shot and send it back. Sorry to see that happened to a brand new phone.

I don't think so, it's just me and my girlfriend here and we were both sleeping. I don't think that would harm the phone either. Anyway, the outside of the phone was completely dry the whole time. No other areas are affected.
The phone I'm using now is an lg thrill and it's been through rain, snow, left outside and it still works. I don't understand why the n4 would do this just by sitting next to my bed.

Santa Claus came early
In all seriousness, did you take it in a moist room like your bathroom? Or outside on a rainy day?
what about the bag o' rice trick?
Humidifier running? Was it on the night stand maybe next to a cold drink that could've had some condensation? Was the room exceptionally cold (maybe that combined with the warmth of the phone caused the condensation?)?
Really weird. Hope you get it sorted. Chances are though, if it shut off because of the condensation, it probably burnt something out. Generally, if it's off and gets wet, you have a better chance of it surviving than when it gets wet and shuts off.
Could it be a battery leak?

Nope, it was dry in my pocket all day. I even got good battery life at
4hr screen on and ~14hr total. I left it unplugged next to my bed with nothing next to it to see how much longer it would last.

It was on the night stand, but nothing liquid was nearby. And my room is always at a constant temperature. Neve had any problems b4 with condensation.
It did have a low battery when I went to sleep and I left it to see what kind of battery drain it would have by morning. I thought only the battery was dead at first, but it's been on the charger now for about 15 min now with the solid red led.

It would be my guess too that the battery is leaking and just RMA it. As it doesn't power up they will never know you rooted it and they will most likely just trash it.
OP updated.
The phone powers on now and everything functions except the screen.

Phone got soaked

So, this is quite interesting. I left my phone in my pocket after taking pictures of my son at the water park. Ended up getting soaked (sitting in a foot of water for 2-3 min) and left in in the heat, and then in rice for a few hours. Now it turns on, screen looks fine, but it hangs at Galaxy S4 logo. If I try to boot into recovery, it shows the little booting recovery text at the top but it still freezes. I tried to load into download mode and it works. Any suggestions? Going to try to Odin it to see if I get anywhere.
You should've left it in the rice longer...if any water was still in there the damdge is already done :/

Then it gets to the point "How long is long enough?" :-\
Add: It was baking in the sun for 4 hours, and then sat in rice for 5ish hours.

I would recommend at least a week. And hey MG howve ya been?

I would have said 48 hrs in rice.
I definitely would have left it in rice for at least a few days. A few hours is not nearly enough time.
Yeah. I was in the wrong. Should have left it longer. Couldn't get it past the galaxy s4 logo. Gave up and filed an insurance claim.

[Q] Nexus 4 dropped in beach water (salty water)

Hello guys, so I was going into the beach and forgot my dead nexus 4 in my pocket, so I went in, and in a second I remembered that its in my pocket, so went out side and tried drying it with my towel, then removed the back cover then removed the battery, but the processor was getting so warm and hot, left the device for 24 hours to dry, connected the battery, tried turning it on, it didn't, but the processor up part was getting so hot, any idea if it's possible to make this thing turn on again, and the paper prove that the water came inside is red, but the bottom one didn't get any water in there. Thank you
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Well salt water and electronics don't really mix..
Get a packet of rice and dip your phone inside it for a few days then try turning it on. If it doesn't, try plugging it into the WALL charger.
If it still doesn't work, well yeah. It's dead.
Well I recently dipped in the pool with my cell phone in my pocket... (For a good reason) and I'm gonna try this if I can't get it to power on after the "rice bath".
