Heat & Stuttering - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a magical ROM out there that eliminates all the stuttering and heat issues? I'm on stock firmware on an I9505. I don't remember the SII and Note being this bad. What's the trick?
Thanks!

Try SetCpu but you have to be rooted

Could you not just set power saving mode on and Deselect the other options in it?

Haven't noticed any difference between normal mode and power saving mode

With Ktoonsez Kernel and its included KTweaks app it worked GREAT for me once.
But then I tryed to update to MOega V5.0 and my phone is like an oven now...
I believe it is not a kernel issued though, because I searched the entire post and hadn't seen anyone complaining of such thing.

Which one you got? Does it lag?
Swyped from another galaxy
i got the 16gb att version....it lags when on energy saver mode besides that its ok. The thing that upset me is half the storage is already used with all the stuff on the phone. It cam with about 8gb free. I am still playing around with it, the battery seems to drain quick but that's normal for a new cell out the box.

Something must be wrong with the phone if you have such a high CPU usage after a fresh install. Send it in for servicing.

first, whats your upgrade procedure, try without restoring stuff and let os settle in. restoring app+data usually causes this with me.
Also what app do you use for measuring cpu usage. That may be off for some reason. Also note cpu utilization v. s. governor. Example on demand scales up frequency when e. g. uses 80%, so it will seem high, but in regard to frequency it is not. Due to battery savings lower frequencies are used, until 80% frequency is reached before going to a higher frequency, thus for same task higher utilization of that frequency it may not be a bad indication is what I am saying.
Now a rom usually needs some time to synch, perform breakin tasks, scan all media etc, try to see through settings, development options then cpu utilization what is utilizing cpu. Maybe app has gone bad, rogue, or maybe its expected.
M using CPU Z, thanx for utilization info

your welcome, you can check also cooltool, that has a nice overlay you can position anywhere. You can configure and show e.g. frequency, cpu utilization, temp(battery I think), pretty fun.

[Q] Alarm When Phone is Off

Ok i keep it straight..
Its my first Android device (The S4.)
Switching from my nokia c7 i've had this issue of alarm not going off when phone's off..
Actually i faced this problem that day when i had only 4% battery left (obviously it wasnt going to last that night)
So i turned off the phone and thought the ALARM would wake me up the next day..( as my nokia always did )
But to my surprise it didnt...
I did search for some solution on xda but no luck..
But then i saw the link of alarm working WITH PHONE OFF on the Rival HTC ONE..(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2406083)
So i was wondering whether the devs would be able to make some app..(Or refer me if theres any as i couldnt find one..)
Thanks for your precious time..
Regards.
Me
EDIT : So i was going though some more stuff on this matter and found something relevent..
Like there is a real time clock running on pc (that keeps time even when its off)..
Maybe HTC does use that to make its ONE power on ..
I think some files in the kernel can be edited for some progress on our s4 ( I am completely a noob and have no idea about kernels n all , i just read it somwhere)..
Maybe some real pro can help us out here, by studying htc one's files.. and try to make it work on some other 'SmartPhones'.
+1 to that plenty of time phone nearly dead and would love to do this if possible

The problem is that some 'smartphones" never really turn off.
My Blackberry Storm was one of those and my guess is that the previous phone you had didn't either.
If the phone is in deep sleep mode, then it can wake up.
If on the other hand, it's off, and I mean really off, there is nothing you can do.
The current crop of Android phones turn off; not go into a deep sleep.
Then how can HTC one do it..
I mean it may go to deep sleep..
But can't our s4 go to deep sleep..?

When your screen is off your phone is in deep sleep. At least should be i dont know how they did it but when you turn off android phone its off. No alarm. Maybe they have modified fly mode and altered frequencies for cpu gpu etc to be just enough to ring alarm with almost zero power consumption. But again its not off. I miss that too. Its like where to **** is my charger or hope my alarm rings
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
With screen off battery goes down by more than 8-10%
I don't think that's deep sleep.. (in deep sleep battery shouldn't drain more than 2-3%..)
Yup if HTC can do that y cant Samsung.. Or other devs..

It's not a matter of firmware/software (which you clearly don't understand), it's a hardware thing. The hardware isn't capable of it.

Check your apps. I have 4% over night data off. Once i broke power button on lg p990 so few days i had to live with no deep sleep to be able to turn screen on with volume buttons and man, drain was over 15%/hour.

Do you use any battery app.. Or its by default..?
I've removed one phone lock app which did save me about 7% drain but still cant get it below 8%..for ( 8-9 hours of sleep )
But i'd still love this alarm feature..

Yes. Software-based. The question is that if a 3rd party app have access to the system to create an "auto on" or if is something that needs to be manage on the OS itself. Maybe with root access?

Nexus 4, KitKat 4.4.2: 100% CPU

Hi!
Sometimes, out of nothing, my Nexus 4 heats and the 2nd core locks down at 100%. The temperatures raises to more than 34 (battery) and 48 (cpu) Celusius.
I tried to kill every application and service, one by one, but none of them changed anything. The only solution is reboot.
Anyone knows what's happening?
Thanks.

I assume it's the 4.2.2 camera bug that was in the news this week.
I have seen it many times on my Nexus 7.
I've finally found out what's causing the problem. It's AdAway.
When it can't download the hosts' file updating, it locks down one core and that's causes the cpu heating.
There is a bug (#476) about this problem.
Thank you everyone who tried to help me.

I think I found a solution for ghost touches [ROOT]

I've been facing ghost touches for few days now, and I their to fix it with changes ROMS and kernels, but non of that helped no matter which ROM I've tried.
So I thought to myself why not change the voltages? I've increased the voltages by +75 now, and from that moment I have not faced any ghost touches, I don't know if it's just luck or a real solution. So I would like to know of you his try that, will it help you too? Try it and tell me.
Thanks

If you have custom kernel, like AK, Franco, boeffela.. Etc you can change mpu voltages using application such as Trickstermod, synapse( AK specific).

Have you noticed any impact on battery?
I had some touch issues previously, not as bad as some on here but they mostly seem to have gone away after updating to CM12S.
I still didn't test the battery, because I applied this setting just 5 hours ago. But is supposed to effect battery life for bad. But I don't care if this keeps me away from touch issues.

IMHO.....this ghost touch problem is absolutely relative....like some never face it, others get it solved with makeshift fixes while others face it all the time.
Yes, it's so annoying, I noticed when the phone is charged, the issue is gone, but when using it until the battery is 50% the issue is back. So I think it might be something related to the CPU and screen temperature, when it's hot, it's works good, when it's cold it starts to stutter.
