[Q] Panorama test Nexus 4 vs Gnex. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my Nexus 4 a couple of days ago and while playing with the panorama mode this morning I discovered that the N4's panoramas are considerably lower quality than my Gnex!
If you select the panorama mode on the N4, hold the phone in portrait mode and shoot just one screen of panorama (ie, don't move the phone, just hit record and stop it immediately), the image size is 632(h) X 480px.
If you do the same thing on the Gnex, the image size is 952(h) X 720 px.
Why is this?

Don't know why panorama is low res but I have found you can take panoramas in photosphere mode that are a nice res. Cant be hardware related then.

Photo sphere isn't that big for me either, like 2000pix wide for a 270 degrees panorama. Any app out there that makes large panoramas/photospheres and works good?

Camera settings for best quality

Guys okay i can see all of you likes the camera quality and i think then is just me i cant do the right settings to it to get good quality pictures ... i read in this forum to get rid of task killers and use only System Panel and to disable the image stabilizer to get more focused and non blurry pictures but still i don`t think the quality is that great because the sharpness is big fail ...(or it is me not using the right settings) if i have to compare it with camera of nokia 6700 the nokia is taking better quality pictures ... if somebody can tell me what is the right settings to use i`ll be more than happy ty! atm i at as it fallows Normal capturing mode, 8mpx or 6mpx it depends scenes more often are in normal and using multi autofocus as common taking picture method
i agree, id be very interested in the replies, i put most of mine down to poor light but to be fair it should be able to deal with indoor lighting
Ive used 8mp and 6mp wide. I switch on screen touch to take photo. Image stabiliser off.

I use Vignette since I think the default camera app messes with the picture.. it compresses it or something
Plus with Vignette you can take 16:9 8 mp shots, not just 4:3 8 mp. and they look great. Look at my timelapse for proof
yeah with vignette is much better i think but it is only me again how to shoot video with vignette ... because i can only take pictures with this widget
Vignette has a widget?
Anyway Vignette is only for taking pictures, not videos
I think the pics are compressed when uploaded. Zoom is hopeless though.

Yeah... it's a crap digital zoom. Not gonna get anything more out of a lens that small. I don't think I've seen a cameraphone with an optical zoom, and we have some insane cameraphones in Japan. (12 MP CCD with 1080p video, ect)

Tap on the Star button - effects and frames
And then go to frame and choose 16:9
always try to play with EV. It kinda seems that on 0 EV images are bit over exposed. Same as taking well lit night images, lowering EV do -0.7 -1 also lowers ISO values, so you ll get less noise

Bad idea to ask for pirated software on these boards...

Well, thing is, Vignette can't do that
And the stock camera app is compressing the files too much.
Why the hell SE doesn't give us the option to set compression level?

[Q] Low quality pictures in panorama mode

The build-in panorama mode looks good, but the pictures taken from this mode are in really low quality/ low resolution. Is there a way to fully utilize the 5M-pixel camera to shot a high resolution panorama picture? Thanks.
I've noticed this too, any help would be appreciated
Sent from Epic(MixUp kernel)
Just use AndroPan.
I saw a reason for this on some other forum and it was understandable why it is in a low format/quality....remember you are taking i think 6 pics sum up into 1 one final pic which has to be compressed.
I will see if I can find it so that you can better understand why it is this way.

[Q] PhotoSphere on N10

Hi,
Just unboxed my N10 and playing around with it etc. Can't get PhotoSphere mode in the camera - it works on my GNex so I know how to find it in the camera settings, there just isn't an option for it. All I see is three options: Camera / Video Camera / Panorama
Any ideas as to where PhotoSphere is and how I can get it to work?
Thanks!

Sorry - just noticed there was a system update waiting which brought PhotoSphere in along with the lockscreen widgets and new keyboard...glad I noticed that before rooting as could have been a hassle!
Great. Now record some videos of you using your N10 and upload them to youtube. Only joking.
On a serious note, what's the screen like? Good colours? black level? Is there any backlight bleed on your screen?

The screen is gorgeous. I've never actually used a retina to compare but it's miles better than my GNex or N7. Blacks aren't perfect, I'll admit, but they're darker than I expected. I don't see any backlight bleed though as has been reported elsewhere—hopefully that was just a preproduction glitch...

Lack of gyroscope - consequences

Hello
As everyone propably knows MXP doesnt have gyroscope sensor. So i would like to know , what are the conseqences of it's lack.
Here are some i read about (and guessed)
- No 360° YT video support
- No Photo Sphare support
- No google cardboard support
- crappy panorama quality (low image size)
What else ?
No google cardboard support too
@bilbo75

I really, really miss doing the massive photos that i could do with my Nexus 5, the panoramic option on the MXP is utter crap.
@MrBelter
Are you sure , that lack of gyroscope is the cause of crapy panorama quality ? Did you try different camera apps ?

I think you have missed my point, thanks to the gyro the nexus 5 stitched 8mp images together thanks to knowing where in a sphere the last shot was taken, the resultant image was as huge as you could make it and at times incredibly impressive where as the MXP produces a low res 912 pixel high image

Photosphere is cool, but when do you use it. Its the same as google street view and takes a lot of patience taking all those pictures and try not to move around.I only mis it for the google cardboard for looking around in games. Also bought the trinus vr app to stream this game called elite dangerous arena to the mxp,but cant look around.
Are gyroscopes that expensive to put on the board? It does seem a strange omission.
I've been using the phone for 6 months. Didn't actually miss anything related to the gyro so far.

best alternative camera app?

I loved X-cam on my lg g3. Is there a better camera app for quick Quito mode pictures than the stock g6 one with all it's exciting and sharpening. Pictures look great infill you zoom in at all. I love it for manual mode and timelapse. But not on IG so the square camera is stupid IMO. Just looking for good alt. To the stock one. Camera 360 was decent but even with paid version the UI is awful
I too am looking at 3rd party cameras. But the ones i have are no better and don't do HDR well or panorama well and some are very slow to take a picture. I can't find a camera app to do panoramas well in HD. they're low resolution or stitched all messed up. I gave up on ever doing panoramas with this phone. Every panoramic picture i take is messed up. so much for those reviews on the test units saying it takes flawless panoramas. Also the apps i tried doesn't let me use the wide angle lens either. bummer.

I've used panorama flawlessly. But IMO with the new wide angle there's almost zero need for panorama unless up close.

So the trees don't get double images in panoramas? Both this phone and the original has this problem.

Never had a issue. I tend to not use the wide lens for panorama though. 2nd pic the road dips a bit that's all. 1st pic is only a 3 part panorama not super huge
