[Q] (Q&A) Stock Kernel vs Custom Kernel? Benchmarks tests - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I have been playing around with a few different kernels while running WanamLite and I just thought I would check to see how much more performance they gave the phone on benchmark tests. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or if maybe Antutu doesn't like the custom Kernel, but I am getting around 26,000 with the ATT stock Kernel and 18,000 with KToonsez kernel. Is this normal? If so, does that mean the stock kernel will actually be faster than overclocking with a custom kernel. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I was just curious and did a search and couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance!!

Motley kernel and Trinity 7 kernel

Hey guys... Just rooted my Nexus 7. I did some research on kernels and found out the two most popular ones are motley kernel and trinity kernel. Can you please explain the differences among the two and which one is better? Thanks a lot..

I've tried the available kernels a few different times and I personally like Faux's kernel most of all. It's nice and smooth like the others but runs quite a bit cooler for me when gaming.

When I first joined this forum I flashed whatever was the most popular. Those are not always the best.
Why don't you flash them all and see which one works the best for you? Some kernels get you a few hundred points more on a benchmark, but no real difference in every-day usage. I am currently making my rounds of the kernels, currently trying Faux's latest ES Beta build: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31508178&postcount=421. Rolling with AOKP Official.
Hi,
I tried Faux Kernel, Trinity kernel and Mothley kernel. Wich is better hmm.
- Trinity Kernel : My device is just not as smooth as the stock kernel. Disliked.
- Mothley : Much smoother then Trinity Kernel but still hard to say if it is more then the Stock.
- Faux Kernel : It is not slower then stock. It is as smooth, maybe even more ?

I need a little bit of advice on overclocking using setcpu

Hey XDA
i bought the setcpu app on my nexus and tryed to overclock it... as i realised it doesnt really overclock it as it only goes to 1.3ghz which is the max the stock can go lol
i take it to actually overclock the tablet beyond 1.3ghz i need to install a new kernal perhaps a custom kernal?
also whats the best kernal i could install instead of stock?
im looking to overclock it to the most fastest but safest speed i heard 1.8ghz atm also want to here other users thots on which kernal i should try,
also if i ever decide to reutn back to stock does everything as in the kernal and the firmware rom flash back to stock?
thnks in advance
You can't over clock the stock kernel. You need an alternative kernel. I like Motley's kernel but Trinity and Faux kernels are good.

so my best bet is elite kernal by clemsyns,
which file on his thread is the latest and best as in 1.8ghz?

with your thinking, you should go ahead and try clemsyns 2ghz kernel, its posted in the east few pages of the thread
but really, you won't be able to handle 1.8ghz as a daily, its more of a toy to play with. there are much better kernels here to use as a daily, that of from 1.6-1.8ghz too. try them all, find what yo like. when you lose battery like a artery in your neck that's been slashed, you'll realize that 1.8ghz is only for fun.
yeah lol iknow what you mean lol
iv tryed searching for the 2ghz elite kernal but i cant seem to find it within the thread... only mnaged to find 1.8ghz
can someone post it in here for me plz if they could that would be great, i dontknow which page it might be on...iv heard of talk about it but havent seem an actual download for it from clemsyns

Stock Kernel with Undervolt

Guys I have a question.
I have stock rom but I'm using custom kernel expecially for UnderVolt.
I want UV not for battery life, that IMHO don't get incresed that much, but for heat reason.
Is it possible to have a stock kernel just with undervolting? Would be that hard to build such a kernel by myself?

No, you cannot undervolt with a stock kernel. If you know how to enable undervolting in a kernel then good job!

Why would you prefer stock kernel vs other custom one? You get better results witth custom
In the Harsh kernel thread he's provided stock kernel with UV several times you can do a search there or ask there, also Harsh kernel itself is modified stock kernel with tons of optimizations, UV etc

[Q] Best kernel for 5.0.1 GE? i9505

Hi
Ive recently decided to try a custom rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557353 ), and i loaded the Googy-Max kernel ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2741181 ) which was included.
Now ive watched a few videos with other custom roms and kernels, and im wondering. What is the best kernel?
Ive heard about the Alucard kernel ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2590246 ),
Is it better/worse or the same?
Also there's this one continuing Googys work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal.../kernel-hulk-kernel-v1-stweaks-based-t3050469
Any other suggestions etc. are also appreciated im newbie when it comes to flashing Kernels.
Alucard has a lot more stuff that you can tweak. Unfortunately it also has a problem with that rom. For some reason there is high battery drain on that rom when using Alucard's kernel. I also tried that Hulk kernel and had the same battery drain. The only kernel where this didn't happen was Googy-Max.
Hulk kernel is based off Googy Max. I currently use it in place of Googy Max and haven't seen the battery drain you have.
Is it better or worse than Googy's kernel?
I don't know what "it" is. You'll need to clarify your question by explicitly stating what kernel you're referring to, and for that matter, whom the question is addressed to.

The hulk kernel - I tried to quote you, dont know why it didnt show up.
The answer to the question is that right now they're both equal in quality as Hulk kernel is built off Googy Max. However, Hulk kernel will be updated while Googy Max is discontinued.

Note 3 N9005 cant overclock processor

Hi guys, fairly new to modding my phone, have tried a few different roms and kernels over the last week, and have sort of settled on cyanogen CM12.1 lolliop 5.1.1. with the kernel that comes with the rom. I've been seeing a few posts/roms that claim its possible to overclock the processor to 2.7ghz now I've tried to install synapse, and stweaks neither of which seem compatible, so I have kernel adiutor installed, but the max frequency it will offer me is 2,3 ghz, am I missing something? can't seem to find any info, can anyone point me in the right direction please

No apps can overclock if the kernel doesn't support the overclock.
Not all phones can can reach so high overclock.
Get arters kernel for cm12.1. Or use cm12.1 by temasek which supports up to 2.5
Thanks for the advise, I'm going to install arters kernel now and see what happens
I installed the arter kernel, and still no overclocking, also reduced my Antutu bench from 45403 down to 3400ish, so gone back to cm12.1 kernel for now. any ideas why I can't increase mas cpu speed?
Maybe it doesn't support till 2.7GHz. Try different kernel

Thanks Kenny, how can I do that? and is it possible to change something in the code to make it overclockable?

Ok. well I have an update, I flashed the kitkat 4.4 liquid smooth rom yesterday, and that allowed me to overclock the cpu but unfortunatly, even overclocked it was slower than Tamasks cm12.1 rom, I also tried the liquid smooth lollipop rom, but again, it didn't allow me to overclock the cpu, it was faster than the kitkat rom, but still not as fast as the cm12.1 so I've gone back to that for now. Its looking like something to do with the lollipop version of android thats stopping the cpu from being overclocked....
Hm strange
