Dont think we'll see it anytime soon. Most of the devs working on it are GSM users so they dont give a care about ud CDMA uers. Isnt at&t gsm anyway?
Anything in the USA is CDMA, and outside of the US is GSM.
Adding CDMA isn't something one of our developers could do. It would require canonical to partner with an in US cellular company i.e. Sprint, Att, Verizon, etc...
So just wait until they have a hardware vendor preparing to sell the real handset.
CDMA will come into the picture with time.

Not true, T-mobile and AT&T are both GSM.
And ofono supports cdma now, its a matter of getting it to recognize the device.

I don't think ofono supports CDMA completely yet, us CDMA users will have to be patient. It is being worked on thoughhttps://ofono.org/blogs/bertrandaygon/2011/ofono-049.

I am looking to upgrade my phone on Verizon. But want to make sure that the one I get will be easily able to be unlocked and run Ubuntu Touch.
So in short, though Ubuntu Touch may not be ported to it yet. What is the best bet for a MODERN phone, that is well made enough to last 2 to 3 years (there are still some Nokia N900s out there going strong, so don't tell me its not possible) to upgrade to that is the most hackable? I've considered the Sam G Note 2, because of the really large screen. But don't know how "Hackable" it is in comparison to other devices.
Not the Nexus, very capable phone but won't be able to fully use desktop mode with full power. I would prefer 4G, since Verizon has stated that they will drop all other radio support in the next 2 to 3 years and only use 4G for voice and data.
Thank you and God Bless you guys and the work you do here!!

I'm sorry I didn't state it fully. I am looking for the most HACKABLE device that way it will be the most likely device to LATER receive a port for Ubuntu Touch. Not that it currently has Ubuntu Touch.
I backed the Ubuntu Edge crowdfunding campaign and was willing to wait a almost a full year before receiving what I paid for. I would be more than willing to wait for a port for the same software but different device. And would donate to the person or persons that did the most work.
Pretty much has to be Quad Core of some kind, as much Ram as possible. And ability to use an SD card so storage space won't be an issue. And again, it HAS to be high quality enough to last atleast 2 to 3 year. My Moto Droid 2 has gone through 3 warranty replacements in the past 2 years. I refuse to deal with that level of incompetent hardware development. If an N900 can last almost 5 years and still go strong using various different Linux Operating systems with more capabilities than the original. Then Modern Android Manufacturers have no excuse.
Sorry for the rant, if you didn't catch that, I'm a little bit peeved at hardware companies lately.

I would recommend you to wait for an official device to be released because the current easy hackable devices are only Nexus or Samsung (but without drivers to port custom roms).

I've been trying to do that, because I love most of what Ubuntu Touch has shown so far. But now the left half of the touch screen on my Droid 2 Global has now stopped working. The screen still works and displays things fine. But it won't recognize any touches. It has a slide out keyboard, which helps alot cause I can use the arrow keys to do most things and still type. And I use Button Savior since this has capacitive buttons along the bottom, the left 2 buttons (Menu and Home) also no longer work. Oh and the 3.5 mm Headphone jack hasn't worked in months. And I've only had this warranty replacement for about 1 year. I would like to wait until official devices are released. But my current device is metaphorically falling to pieces.
Now you see why I am so upset with hardware manufacturers?

Oh, that's really a problem. If you don't need a high-end device asap I'd recommend you a really cheap Android device (you can keep it as a second fall-back phone). I have a Galaxy Gio as my second phone and I'd recommend that for you. It costs 40€ on ebay (I don't what it costs in your country) and has really good build quality and an active community for custom roms (you can install real stable and fast Android 4.2 on it). But it has no CDMA support.
I can't recommend you any current phone because nobody knows how they'll be working with Ubuntu Touch. Maybe the Samsung Galaxy S4...

VZW people should be on the look out for a new Kernel from Boushh, Im running it now for 24 hours and its a screamer and totally stable. Latest benchmark was 2221.
It should be out tonight or soon after.
Trying to learn basics of coding and all in the upcoming weeks. Hopefully ill be able to contribute down the road. Radio is hugebpart of update
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
and ironically the Radio is the only thing that BLOWS on this phone. The ONE thing they had to do they screwed up on.
In order to build android you have to have the proprietary binary files for the wimax and cdma radio. the documents above prove that update has been built and they have the "new radio" if they are even going to update it. so i would not blame sprint/samsung for the delay, they did their job. google needs to finish with whatever tweaks they are working on and release the update or at least commit the code so we can compile.

I found this at opensource.samsung.com for the SPH-D720. Not sure if means much and still would be nice if they release come source code that they currently have. Either way no big deal, I enjoy my Nexus S and really dont any issues with it. I would like better radio signal but who wouldn't. You could get a phone much worse off at Verizon, AT&T, or T-MOBILE. So good luck to the people jumping the boat. I expect a influx of people joining up with Sprint before Spring and then it will bog down the network. I hope they have a plan in place to take care of that issue that may happen.

What is the purpose of owning a nexus device on a cdma network? I am so tired of google and networks in so many ways. I thought the purpose of owning a nexus device was that I would receive update directly from google. I own a nexus 4 g and a motorola zoom lte and have not received an update in over 4 months. I'm stock rooted still on GB. I'm not into roms necessarily only reason I root is for wifi tether and titanium backup. Or maybe removing or freezing apps but it doesn't matter on a nexus device. Bottom line is that GS2 and vivid GSM models have gotten updates before my nexus. All I'm saying is CDMA networks do not push updates for nexus devices as they should and google obviously can't provide updates in a timely manor for these devices either. This is a problem with google plus the cdma networks.

ahh ok,I can respect that. Much more than all the other threads on here complaining about not getting the update, yours is more based on the CDMA networks which is the source of the problem for what you're referring to.
That's why I came here cdma updates can be few and far between at times.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
There isn't a reason really. With an htc device for example you get aosp like cyanogen plus you get sense if you want it. I had both options on my evo shift. No one really knew the cdma nexus experience didn't really mean **** until recently since this was the first cdma nexus.
The good thing about this is that now i have opened myself up to more options for my next phone like the htc one or gs3 where up until about January i was only ever going to get nexus phones even though they are usually lacking in something like the camera, fm radio, no sd slot or whatever. And it doesn't matter since updates won't cone any faster and the wonderful devs keep us up to date.
the files for the cdma radio are proprietary, google has to wait for the networks to provide them. googles part is done and available. they even came said a few months ago that cdma nexii arent considered developer phones anymore, just for that reason. its the cdma networks that you should let know how you feel.
im on 2.3.7, it aint broke so im in no hurry to fix it. when i get an official update then ill update. i dont see what the big deal is
I am a very happy CDMA Nexus S owner. I've been rocking 4.0.4 on my NS4G since this morning, I'm not sure what people are complaining about. Yes, we all thought that since we have Nexus devices we'd get personal invites from Goog to test out their new OS. Turns out this is not true, stupid us for thinking that. But in the end what's the difference? As soon as the update is in AOSP our awesome devs have it ready for us to crackflash. These complaint threads are getting old, when did XDA turn into Facebook?

I'm curious as to why you think that it is not possible? Is the tablet not a computer? It's hard for me to believe that they built a completely different board just for a 3g module. Obviously most people would find it easier to just by the 3g version in the first place but for the people who are adventurous I can't see why not. If you have the exact same chip and the 3g ROM, what would stop anyone? I'll research it and post back.

This is me talking out of my ass but I would say the issue is not so much about it being impossible but about not being worth the hassle specially there being a 3g option available and affordable. Not only you need the parts, tools and know how to do the modification, you probably would also need someone to whip out some software magic to get the tablet to recognize and use a modification an absolute minority will do.

Replacing components on a computer and replacing them on a mobile device are two vastly different things. The components aren't merely plug and play. They're precision soldered, which you can't do by hand.

Lol. Its precision well beyond the scope of what can be done by hand. A typical radio used by Qualcomm has 976 solder points in a 14mm square.
Of course, your basing everything on the assumption that, from day one, Asus had intended the N7 to be a cellular device.

I wouldn't doubt that Google had planned a 3g device. Its just a matter of whether or not it was taken into account during the design for the original N7 board.
If so what are you using it for? Phone or other. Need ideas not going to throw it out due to its beautiful history.

I'm afraid I'm also not using mine for anything, sitting a draw, but like you I'm definitely gonna keep onto it.
Alarm clock? You could get a 1.0 ROM or something and delete almost everything but the clock (and probably need a launcher for it).
Doorstop? It's pretty tough and chunky, and the chin might help.
A remote/Bluetooth keyboard for some other device, e.g. tablet. Idk how this would work, I've looked into it before but can't find answers.
Def sounds like a good idea for a remote. Maybe for you tube app on my TV or something other. Maybe give it to my daughter and tell her to have a ball.
Funny, I just found one of these phones at a garage sale today..... Perhaps some resource-unintensive Linux distro could be ported to it and it could be used as a small Linux box.
Still using mine as a WiFi hotspot. Since I have a free data only SIM with a volume monthly quota of 30GB
I'm using mine as a sacrificial phone when I'm kayaking. It's perfectly capable of calls, SMS, and MP3s still. The touchscreen works through a transparent drybag. I can be confident that if I should wind up in the water and the drybag should fail, it's no great loss.
Mine is with my 2 year old daughter. She play games on it ,really there is no other use.

as a student living abroad, it hosts my sim card in my home country to receive sms from my parents, who are not good at smartphone stuff...
As a backup alarm clock!!!

I was going to use it as a GPS and/or Speedometer, with no sim in it (on my motorcycle), but first i need to instal a power port! as the battery life sucks once i turn on gps....or the screen!

I want to use my G1 as a screen keyboard and mouse for my raspberry pi. It would be great if I could make it usb plug and play so I could just plug it into any pi and be off.
I'm using my old mytouch 4g as an IP camera. The g1's camera isn't as good but that's another idea.

Mine is sitting in a backpack full of electronics. The camera is broken, though. It doesn't matter; It's running a ICS ROM which doesn't have camera working, anyways.
I lend it to my friend, he still uses it as a primary device !!! he was never interested in smartphones, so he is very satisfied with that phone
I Love G1
Mine, I'm still using it as my primary phone, I really love it.
I just picked up a package deal consisting of an HTC Radar 4G, a MyTouch 3G and this G1.
I have unlocked all of them (using a Lycamobile Sim). Unless I really fall for the Radar, I will probably sell it (worth more than what I paid for all 3) and keep the Dream alive :good:.
But first, need to get it up to Froyo. It will do what I need. It's the model T of Androids.
The MyTouch had a bad sim card holder, so I needed to do some solder work and hack the holder so that the card just falls in from the outside rather than slides in. The back holds it fine, but it probably not very salable (though the outside is in perfect shape)
Update-
Got the G1 rooted and running on Cyanogenmod 6. It was a struggle to find coherent , relevant, current (not really current, but currently working) info on how to work this ancient piece. It has given me a taste for it , anyway and I hope to try another ROM.
Frankly, I am just rambling to get my post count to 10 so I can ask a question in the modding forum....
It was sitting in a laundry hamper that I was using to store a bunch of old CDs and other stuff I don't use on a daily basis. It so happens that the hamper fell from the top of my bedroom closet and now I'm thinking of ways to use this thing, but the first thing that came to mind was to use it as a distraction for the kids. Now that I think about it, it could be used as a remote with keyboard and all. It's running CM6, but I'd like to know if there is a ROM that is very minimal. My phone has no ability to make calls anyway, but everything else works. Any ideas?
