A dedicated Camera Thread could be useful - One (M7) General

The HTC One camera has cool features and can take good pictures.
However discussing it on XDA seems to lead to a lot of flaming, trolling and locked threads.
This placeholder thread may get resurrected at a later date, but for now it may be best to let camera information accumulate elsewhere.
Originally this thread was intended to contain information on the most interesting features and practical implications of those features were for taking successful pictures.
Also it contained specific details about which features were specific to which versions of camera software and how to determine which version of camera software you have.
PM me if you think the OP in this thread needs to be put back in its original state...

The second post in this thread contained a lot of common sense reminders about things such as
- why comparing this camera to other cameras is not helpful to people who just want to get the most out of *this* camera.
- how to compare (and how *not* to compare) two pictures to make a point
- how to have realistic expectations about this camera considering HTC's goals in balancing price, form factor, features etc.
These are just some of the obstacles that cause other camera threads to get derailed...

Reserved in case a FAQ or Glossary or some such becomes useful at some point...

I'm with the issue of prefocus with flash in low light condition.. is there any way to add the flash to focus like all phone do??

I haven't heard any best practices yet for total darkness situations. My results have been poor- the pre-flash is on for like a half-second, yet usually the autofocus doesn't lock on to anything. If there is *any* ambient light, you have a much better chance of acquiring focus if your subject is not moving and has *any* contrasty edges or patterns. (The camera "breathes" in and out of focus a lot while previewing in ambient light, but it is often close enough to allow a successful focus during the pre-flash and therefore a sharp image during the actual flash exposure) . If your barely-lit subject is amorphous, low-key, or moving, well, no. You're back to the same success rate as total darkness.

Also not forgetting Anandtech's 27,000 word review
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6747/htc-one-review
Lots of sample videos and photos of the camera's capabilities.

Thanks! added to OP.

I too would like to know why the HTC one struggles to auto focus when its dark. I have to take pictures 2 or 3 different times in order for it to come out good.

You answered your own question. Cos it's dark
Also, at the OP. Will you be writing up on the Topics for Discussion in your 2nd post, or are you just collecting info for those topics from various sources?

Both. When things have been quiet for too long I will pick one of them and do a deep dive.
My first area of exploration is to really try to see what changed with 2.17. There's so much good information buried in the ARHD thread (as well as bogus claims backed by poor or no evidence).
Can't wait to get a handle on that.

Most needed features for android development

So I'm writing this list in full understanding that it is still in development for the HD2. I just want to bring to the developers' attention about what I believe to be really desired features by many. And many of which I don't think will be hard development changes. If anyone else thinks of any, feel free to reply with your ideas and Ill update this post so developers don't have to search or "fetch" the for the ideas. Oh by the way, these features are ideally from the HD2 windows mobile side of things and I feel that if we can get these features on the Android side, it won't be hard for me to let go of WM. Hey, it's the truth.
LIST OF FEATURES:
Boost from 5mp to 8mp camera
Touch focusing on camera
Fixed led notifications [being worked on]
Auto backlight [being worked on]
audio routing through bluetooth?
Other things not directed towards developers:
CoPilot (Although Google Nav is doing it for me )
Office Mobile 2010 or close

Um we have a 5mp camera not a 8mp camera its a physical limit.
Ill have a play but I think we can already do touch focus and there are plenty of other camera apps out there.(upon a quick check i found auto focus but not touch to focus)
Led notifications "are" being worked on as we speak.
I believe the auto backlight works(kinda sorta) I believe I saw cotulla say it was working but the polling delay was high so you might not see a change right away. Not sure if they incorportated that yet.
I have not looked into these threads but I know that android has copilot.
and I know we have documents to go. There is a free version and a paid version.

I understand that we have a physical 5mp camera but why do we have that tweaking app for wm that tweaks it to 7/8mp?
There is a difference between touch and auto focus. Touch focus allows you to touch the screen and wherever you tap will come into focus. Huge difference when taking close-ups of an object.
Wonderful news about the led and backlight. Thanks for the update!
Only info i could find as far as the camera and android is 720p recording. It might be best to ask the camera question in the nexus1 forums. I am not sure the tweaks are legit.
A wise man once said your images will still look like crap no matter how many mp's you have if your image processor sucks.

There is a thread out there concerning this issue, but no solution.
the wake problem is being addressed. So there wont be a solution till the dev's figure it out. A lot have stated that using the evo kernal makes it a lot better but Ive seen higher than normal drainage.

How about audio routing through bluetooth? Its 1 useful feature of Winmo that ive been unable to get on Android.

No we do not have a tweek for higher MP cameras.
The sensor in the camera is simply only able to register a photo size of 5mp!
Even with that tweek, the photo size is still 5megapixel. (i.e. 2580 by 2048 pixels in size). 5 megapixel will print at about 8 by 10 inch, do you really want a bigger print from your phone?!
Megapixels have nothing, at all to do with image quality (unless your printing large, even then they are sort of pointless!)
That tweek, as far as I know changed the DPI of the photos.
720p video would be nice though, lol
I wish I could listen FM radio through my bluetooth headset
Well personally for me the biggest issue is stable 3G/HSPDA performance. At the moment it is the single biggest limitation of Android on the HD2. All those other issues just pale into insignificance by comparison.
The next biggest is the poor GPS pickup speed. If these were sorted I'd be very happy.
maybe a louder volume hack... since meltus stopped updating for 2.1+
music speaker and speaker phone volume is too soft. The same song plays louder when i bluetooth to another phone.

[Camera Glitch]

Hi guys, i dont know where to post this but here goes!!!!
Before the arrival of the Nand version of the android, there were many SD versions of the android that had a glitch with the camera focus, which the dev teams have ironed out. The problem was that when the camera was focused on a close object (video rec) and then the record was started, the camera will not auto adjust to other object but stay fixed on the focus point it was when you started. This was fixed with the button feature that was within the menus (auto focus on/off).
This may of been a problem for most users but was an excellent feature for the Mobile Directors (my university film crew). We decided that we will do all of our university film projects using my fantastic HD2 and this glitch feature played a vital role. I have been meaning to post our work here for a long time but never had the chance as it is our final majors. But i have uploaded 1 of the first video's we made long time ago using that glitch for the builds.
Now what i need help with is if those DEV SUPER TEAMS can look into this feature again and put it into the new builds so that we can carry on making amazing films with our HD2 if it is possible. The problem is that i cant find the old build i had and the new builds don't have this feature.
Before you say anything please look at the 1 min vid which we created with the focus problem (by focusing on foreground the background is blurred) that i am talking about and share your thoughts on the matter. (i will upload some more soon).
http://vimeo.com/22366901?ab
Filmed in black and white - please note the blurred focus scenes that were done using the glitch. FILMED ONLY USING HTC HD2 with very basic editing.
p.s. i posted this in Q&A but had no response so here it is

Duh,,,lol, well sorry about my misread. Well, I'm not sure where the issue was or fixed. But if you were using a sense rom or regular android, that would be a start as they use diff camera apk's.
Also, I think there were many settings in the media_profiles.xml in the root/system/etc folder that at least change the video size and maybe something that affects the focus.
If I now understand it correctly, what you really need is a "manual focus" control.
noellenchris
Good news! I tried some test video's using lgcamera (free in the Market) and if you tap on the screen it will focus on the close object and stay out of focus until you tap on the screen. Also I used Videocam illusion pro (not free) which I bought and tested the focus and it works like the LGcamera app. I think the Videocam illusion pro is better though, as it has some really cool effects you can also use.

Do you have issues with the Gingerbread camera and dark pictures

Hi,
Since going to Sense gingerbread ROMs, my camera has been horrible in low light pictures. It seems like the flash is firing just a little bit too early. By the time the shutter opens, the flash has pretty much done its thing, and the picture comes out very dark. I have tried every single combination of Sense GB ROM and kernel that is currently available, and I get the same result with every single one. I have also tried all of the cameras available in the Market. I get the same poor results with every single one of them. The only way that I can get a decent low light picture is to flash back to a Froyo ROM, or over to an AOSP ROM. The pictures taken in any Froyo or AOSP ROM come out good and bright in all conditions. I think that there must be some sort of incompatibility with Gingerbread ROMs and the camera in my phone.
But of course just like every other thing with these phones, not everyone is having problems. But there are quite a few people that are. I've been trying to work out whether it is some sort of software issue, or hardware. We all know that there are four different hardware versions on the Evo. And from what I can determine, there are two different types of cameras in use. I started a little survey in one of the ROM threads in development. But I thought that I'd move it up here so that more people could see it and participate. I am hoping that if you know for sure that you are having the dark low light photos problem or if you know for sure that you're not having the problem that you could post information in this thread about the ROM you're running, your hardware version, the camera that you have in your phone, and whether you're having the problem or not. To determine the camera in use, do the following:
Using root explorer navigate to sys/ you will see android_camera and android_camera2. Android_camera is the rear camera. Go into that folder, hold over sensor until you see the options menu. Scroll down to View As Text and that opens the file with Camera brand and model number. Post that information to the thread, along with the other information requested above. I'll start:
ROM: Classic 0.0.4
Hardware: 0003
Camera: samsung S5K3HIGX 8M
I do have the issue
Thank you to anyone that responds to this.

Right. Not everyone on GB has the problem though. I am trying to find something that everyone with the problem has in common. It's not the camera itself. Maybe it's the camera and hardware combination. That's what I'm hoping to determine with this thread.
Tried everything you have tried above with no good results. Sprint store is a waste of time don't bother. I hope ICS makes things better.

Probably true, but I think that I'll give my Sprint store a try anyway. Who knows. They might be able to come up with something. Just wish I had more info to give them going in. You and I both have the same issues, but different cameras. The only similarity is the HW 0003.

I took it to two stores, one said my flash was going bad they replaced it so they say, but that wasn't it. Another store said my camera was loose they fixed that but still the same problem. This one rep was pissing me off because he was taking pictures in the bright ass store telling me my camera was fine when i clearly told him it happen at night or in low light places. And i told him to duplicate the problem he will need to go in a dark room or somewhere low lit but clearly they didn't do it. But you may have a different experience, good luck to you. please post what happens at your store.thx. Oh, also i wanted to tell them so badly about asop and froyo roms working but couldn't.

I plan on telling them about it working well on Froyo. I restored my nandroid from right after I rooted and took a few pictures. Then I went back to Classic and took the same pictures. The difference is huge. But yea, cannot mention AOSP at all.
Also, I'm not unrooting my phone. I installed the latest stock GB ROM. Hopefully they won't dig too deeply into that. I've had really good luck with this non-corporate Sprint store down the road. Hopefully my luck will continue today. Though I'm not exactly sure what I expect to get out of it. I mean I really don't think that the problem is fixable on the phone. But I'll feel better once I've exhausted all possible options.

Sounds like he was trying to avoid addressing your problem by making it look like a non problem. I'm guessing possibly in front of other people so it looked like you were just wining. If they can't replicate it, it must not be happening right?
That is exactly what went down in the store, exactly!

The Sprint store guy admitted that he could see the issue. He had an older Evo around with Froyo on it and he compared and sure enough, there was a big difference. He said that the only thing he could really do would be to order a replacement, but that the replacement might have the same problem or some other problem. So at least he was honest with me.

How about posting your hardware, camera, and ROM...
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Multiple threads on this topic, but posting here since this is the most recent.
First, the basics:
Evo 4G rooted
still running standard Sprint Rom (basic tweaks, nothing serious)
Camera Zoom FX 3.2.2
Yesterday I realized that I'm having this issue as well... pictures are certainly coming out darker than before. This isn't the first time it's occurred, but up until now didn't realize it was reoccurring thing. It's further exaggerated when shooting from a lower light area towards a brighter area (example: from inside a car of something outside). No big shock there.
I installed Camera Zoom a few months ago in hopes of increasing the quality of pics (over the stock camera app). Overall, it was very successful. However, for the most part I take pics indoors or under a decent amount of overhead/ambient light. Thus far, no problems. But it seems that the increase in pic quality with Camera Zoom has also brought an increase in darkness to these pics in certain situations. Not so good.
Will try to find an answer.

Anyone got any comparison screenshots between stock camera and Jishnu's Camera MOD?

I'd like to see everyone's sample shots that installed Jishnu's Camera MOD. Thanks!
I had them. But deleted already. I am not a fan of super proffesional photos, but i was able to see the difference.
Just try it yourselg. Image size is bigger anyway when you use his MOD. This is already a good reason to change camera apk and libs.
And this is not a Q&A tread. Please post your questions in right thread.
I see a lot of talk about bigger, but I'm thinking bigger ≠ better, or else LG's engineers would have set compression differently. Something in the tune of 2% subjective improvement with a 80% increase of file size isn't worth it either.
I'd also like to see some comparison shots, the thread is just too messy to get anything meaningful out of it in terms of quality experience, it's just "does it work / please test this / omg my phone is bricked".

I tried The EXTV3 version and returned back to the stock camera. Too noise in photos on my opinion. Many people like the mod so i think i will try again the updated version and post shots soon.
Thanks for sharing. I think many people are on the edge of trying it out but are not sure whether it objectively improves camera quality. I would be beneficial for OP as well since he will gain more downloads and potentially gain more donations. It's a win-win.
Camera MOD users, if you want to help out, you can spread the word by posting comparison shots.

First thing first. Check if it is an external or internal issue. To check if it is external, take a closer look to the camera (if possible with a zoom ?) and if you see the lens is foggy or some moist inside there, then you will have to open it. To check if is internal, install 2 or 3 other cameras that work with selfies and see if it is blurry too.
Could you post an example?

1st, if you want someone to answer to you, you must click on the reply button. otherwise, that person might never know that you are asking him something.
Now, this is a picture of how more or less a foggy/moist lens would look like (like fog accumulating on the interior). If you take a close look and you dont see anything abnormal, then it is more likely to be something inernal (software related) but in order to see whether is that too then, you might want to install several camera apps and try each one. if none of the show a blurry image, then it is software related. if all of them show you the same result then ... it might be external and you would have to open the phone.

A) If the OP is serious about this thread, they'll come back and actually check it and see my request. If they need me to hit the reply button, that's just lazy and not giving a care. If they don't care, I don't care.
B) If you meant to attach a photo, you forgot to.
C) I'm not really interested in seeing what you have, I'm here to help the OP. I've been doing photography for over 30 years now. I pretty much have seen it all. Not sure why you think I want to see what you have since you are not the OP.

C) I'm not really interested in seeing what you have, I'm here to help the OP. I've been doing photography for over 30 years now. I pretty much have seen it all. Not sure why you think I want to see what you have since you are not the OP.

This is what i mean.

And to be honest. If you want s fast response then the usual approach is a reply.
Seems like you took my comment the wrong way. i dont know why since it is just a suggestion which make sense (didnt they created the reply button for that reason?) . Also, you are talking to someone who had that same issue. Maybe not with this phone but with the samsung galaxy s5.

Er, the OP started the thread and commented about blurry photos, what made you assume the thread was suddenly about you?
And there's about a million different reasons for photos to come out blurry which is why it is best to ask for examples instead of jumping on a solution that is probably somewhere at the bottom of the list out of possible reasons first. Makes complete sense that I was talking to the OP if you're actually here to help the OP.

Ah. nevermind I thought I was talking to the OP but now i figured out i was talking with someone else.
Do you know what a hierarchy chart by any chance? (dont go taking this question the wrong way now)
Yes, I know what a hierarchy chart is but I fail to see how that solves the OP's issue without the OP coming back and giving us examples of his/her blurry photos.
To get back on track, and yes this is almost pointless without samples of the blurry pics, my front camera seems to "smooth" selfie pics as if to make them seem better. They look, to me, like they have been processed to look "better"--like some people often do on Facebook to pics of themselves, particularly if they are above a "certain age."

First thing first. Check if it is an external or internal issue. To check if it is external, take a closer look to the camera (if possible with a zoom [emoji361]) and if you see the lens is foggy or some moist inside there, then you will have to open it. To check if is internal, install 2 or 3 other cameras that work with selfies and see if it is blurry too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It turns out lens had collected dust under the screen protector. I took some pics without screen proctor they came out just fine. I am sorry to reply so late due to hectic work schedule. Truly appreciate the advice. I didn't mean to post a question and disappear.

Just bought the V20 and I've got to say how disappointed I am with the front camera, particularly auto mode. It's almost impossible to take a picture that isn't blurry. The only way to get a decent picture is to switch to manual mode and increase shutter speed. Once you toggle between shutter speed and iso, you can capture really decent pictures. Where this causes problems is when you need to snap a picture really quickly and don't have time to sit and adjust settings. I'll probably return this phone and go for a Samsung. At least I know I'll get great pictures. Very disappointing.
the front camera sucks because of the focus, that's why mines blurry anyway. it's like infinity focus so anything closeup, like a selfie, is not sharp. the galaxy s7 was the same way.. the ffc was garbage on it bc of this. weird, bc my note 4 ffc was 10x better than both and that phones 3 years old lol

I think it has something to do with with the stupid beauty filter on the front cam for selfies. Even if you turn it down to 0 it still looks like it's applying a smoothing effect and there is no way to turn it off as far as I know.
Just doing a comparison shot in another camera app like the Google camera I can tell a difference in the detail of my skin. The Google camera sucks because there is too much noise overall but I can actually see the individual hairs on my beard whereas on the LG one with the beauty thing turned to 0 it still looks like a smoothed out mish mash
