No offline speech recognition on android 4.1+, what to do? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello everyone,
I tried to install different ROM's, but none of them had the option "download offline speech recognition" in Settings->Language & input ->Voice search
I also updated the app to the new version, but nothing has changed.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.

I don't really use this speech thing. But in most cases, when I install a ROM I see an option during installation for "Offline google now" or something like that. Try to select that option and see what happens. Good luck.

You have to download Offline speech recognition first. Here's how:
Go to settings> Language and Input> Google voice tying's settings> Download offline speech recognition, then select any language you want to download for offline speech recognition. That's all.

Oops, my bad. I apologize for it. Thanks for pointing it out!
@glaciuse, I think the roms you installed doesn't support offline speech recognition then.

@Marvlesz, thanks for the idea, I'll definitely try it, but I usually check all the options when installing the ROM and now I do not remember the option like "Offline google now". Of course, I could overlook it, will have to check it out
@D4nyal, I've tried a lot of the latest JB v4.1 + ROMs and nowhere was this option :/

Now I installed android 4.2 on Virtual Box and there also is no such menu option. It seems to me that just don't have packet for that.
For this option, I need something in addition to Google search packet?

Solutions
some options to use:
1) use IVONA TTS engine (it also lets you recognize speech offline) it reqires 150 MB of space (with english language installed alone: Play Market
2) you can use a workaround for using google offline libraries on android 4.1+ (in case you also can not download them from the system settings), but is not easy and requires root: xda thread here
btw I tested IVONA TTS with Utter and it could recognize my speech offline, so it should work

that will not work..... I have to voice seach in google nav. and my seach bar does not have it as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667387
Not available in Canada currently because it only supports English.
found how to get it.. just do a seach on google for "com.google.android.voicesearch.apk" and download and install and it works.. copy it to your SD card to install it.
nevermind it just crashes out. worked on my x10 tho
here this version works
hmm... if you are talking about the Bell version it comes in the stock ROM
it's labelled as "Voice Dialler"
but it is not only voice dialing, when you speak to it, it comes back with search results for both software and contacts, if you execute either one, it launches the app, or it dials the contact

Earlier today I change the sell code to english and ta-daaa: voice search appeared. I'm actually looking for a way to get rid of it right now
You lose all your data though. So if you're gonna try it, go ahead and back up. I use Titanium back up (I don't love it, though: you have to stay by the phone waiting to give the green like* everytime an app is being re-installed).
EDIT: *light
sell code?...
Hmmm, maybe that's not its name. Anyway: *#272*HHMM# change HHMM for your local time, so if it's 12:30 it should look like: *#272*1230#.
Once there, check the codes http: //samsung-firmware . webs . com / samsunglettercode . htm (remove blanks) and apply the english one.
i get only this page when i google sell code samsung... so i'm not sure if such a thing exist.
anyway the 272 trick doesn't work on my i9000.

Thanks,
Market didn't have "google commands" but it had "voice commands". Voice commands was listed as free but when i clicked on the link it said "not found"
I tried both appbrain and android market.
Anyone have the apk for voice command or google command?
I'm not exactly sure why voice input was removed, probably a combination of the fact that it doesn't support french and also that Samsung stripped out the default android keyboard (which has the microphone button) and replaced it with 2 far superior keyboards: their own, and swype. I guess that's the one downside of swype is you don't get the voice input button.
However Samsung did include Vlingo for free (I'm aware that Vlingo has since become free for all phones since the updated google voice commands were announced for froyo). Vlingo is actually far better than the google voice input (at least for 1.5-2.1) as it gives you commands as well as the text entry. You can also setup the Vlingo keyboard which is essentially the stock Android 2.1 keyboard including the mic button.
From what I can tell it detects words just as well as the google service. Vlingo lets you put widgets of any size (1x1 to full screen) so this kinda makes up for the missing mic button on the google search widget.
I would imagine when the 2.2 update comes out we will have the google function back with multi language support and commands!
well Nirvana388 beat me to it, i was going to recommend Vlingo as well

Thanks, but Vlingo requires internet right? My old phones had voice recognition without the requirement of internet.
Ravi84m suggested "google commands" because it doesn't require internet??

Voice Settings unavailable?

I was trying to try google translate, and then it told me the voice engine was not installed.. I proceeded to download eSpeak from the Market, but when I tried to enable it on Settings, I realized there are no voice input and output settings section!!
Have anybody been able to install voice engines successfully?
I installed Svox and there is an option to go to TTS settings there but when you click it it force closes settings. I'd like to find a workaround as well.

For voice input, I think I installed Google Voice Search from market.
It's kind of too bad that Google doesn't tell you how to tie all of their different technologies together ...

Hi,
Maybe I wasn't clear.
To get voice INPUT, I installed Google Voice Search.
Then, I could talk INTO Google Translate, but it wouldn't "speak" the translations.
Then I installed the TTS extension I mentioned, to get speech OUTPUT (TTS).
In the end, I had to install:
- Google Voice Search
- Google Translate
- Google espeak (Translate asked for this, I think)
- Google TTS extension

Offline voice typing won't work

Hi all,
I got my n7 yesterday, and it is the best device I have ever used.
But if I turn the wifi off, and try and type something with the offline voice typing, it just says "failed to reach Google" or something like that.
I read that the n7 is supposed to have the feature.
I downloaded the offline voice pack In settings, but no luck, it still didn't work.
Please could someone help me, as I am often away from wifi, and as such I would really like to have that feature
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Corey

It appears you must be connected via WiFi for the Type Text by Speaking to work. From the Nexus 7 Guidebook page 51.
You can use voice input to type text by speaking. This feature uses Google’s speech-recognition service, so your tablet must be connected to a Wi-Fi network to use it.

Voice dictation, which they advertised, does work offline. For example, if you have Google Voice installed you can respond to a SMS with voice but obviously you won't be able to send it without data. Also works with Gmail. Just confirmed it.
You need to install your language. Settings, language and input, Google Voice Typing, Download offline speech recognition
Not even being able to do basic voice actions offline is getting annoying. They need to address this. My phone can do it in airplane mode on ICS, there's no reason you shouldn't have limited voice input capability with no connection on the Nexus 7.
@AMoosa, the Nexus 7 already comes with that; at least, mine did. It's already installed, size is 22MB.
Any other ideas?
New Nexus 7, out of the box, under Settings/ language and input/ Google Voice Typing/ settings/ Download offline speech recognition: English Language offline pack shows as already installed; so there is no "download" button.
It works fine when wifi is on. Turn off wifi, and it says "Can't reach Google at the moment".
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

After stumbling around on this trying to get it to work offline, I found TWO more key bits of information to make it happen.
Settings
Language & Input
Under KEYBOARD & INPUT METHODS section,
Click the SETTINGS icon to the right of "Android Keyboard"
Input Languages MUST BE SET TO "English (US)" (I assume to match my downloaded language file).
Ensure the checkbox is enabled beside "Google voice typing", and set to "automatic" (it can't be a mismatch from the "Android keyboard" setting or again it won't work).
None of this seems to be a problem if you've got your overall language setting to be English (United States) and are using the default "use system language" option for Android Keyboard. In other words, it's tweaked to work fine for US users, but others need to fiddle.

Voice commands and google now cards not working in EU

Hi, i've been searching the nexus forum through but haven't found any solution that would work on my tablet.
My problem is this: i bought the UK nexus 7 and am using it in the scandinavia. whenever i try to assign a voice command like "set alarm to 21:30" or "show pictures of cyanogenmod", it just does a google search and shows the results. I can't see any of the cards nor can i use any of the voice commands.
I tried switching the tablet language to english (US and UK) and install all the offline voice recognition libraries. I've also gone through the google now setup and allowed all location information etc.
In another thread it was suggested that i should get a trial of google apps for business and from there switch on the google one for my tablet, but this seems completely ridiculous (and it won't solve the fact that also the voice commands are not working).
Does anyone have a hint on what i should try next to get the commands to work and cards to show?
Works for me when it finally understands me. Settings are English US and it will play tracks, tell me the weather, search apps and set alarms from what I've tried so far.

the problem here is not that it would not understand me. the problem is that it understands completely well the sentence "set alarm at 21:30" but it does a google search of it! whatever command i try from the google voice commands list at google help center, it just does a google search. it does not set alarms, it does not show pictures of androids, it does not show me a weather card. i just get a google search result for "weather in xyz"
i find this puzzling

I'm in the UK, but as long as the device region is set to US (Settings > Language & Input), it works fine. I can say "remind me to drop a coil at 8 O'Clock tomorrow" and I get an alarm set, or "Show me pictures of black cats", and lots of kittehs come up...
You lot not downloaded the UK English pack?
That's strange, if I'm using the french command for "Open Gmail" for example, it does a google search of "open Gmail". I even tried the english sentence, and it does the same thing.
I changed my phone language, tried "Open Gmail", it does a google search and then, says Opening apps and Gmail starts !
I'm using CyanogenMod 10.1 M1

It's not a bug, it was meant like this. Google now needs that you use a us or Canadian English as the system language. I would like that there was one in French though.

Even though 'Language and Input Settings' have something to do with this, you also need to change 'ACCOUNTS AND PRIVACY' settings in Google Now settings. You need to enable 'Google location settings'. If already enabled, try also switching on 'Google Location Reporting' > 'Location Reporting' > it should be 'On for this device'. Hope this helps!

How can i definitively change the Google Maps voice? (Text-To-Speech voice engine)

Hello guys,
i've already asked this same question when i had an HTC Desire HD but nobody could help me. Maybe i'll be more lucky this time.
I hate the default Text-to-speech output voice engine of Android. In italian, it's simply embarassing. In Google Maps it can't spell basic words like "first", "second" or "exit" and it doesn't read the streets' addresses; it simply says "turn right", "turn left" without specifying in which road i should turn.
So, i've installed Ivona Text-to-speech HQ with his italian male voice "Giorgio" and i think it's great. it speaks in a good italian and in Google Maps it even read the streets' names.
But i have a problem: sometimes Google Maps uses Ivona, sometimes it uses the Android default. Sometimes it uses for all the session the default voice, sometimes it keeps switching between the 2 voices (2 sentences said by Ivona, 1 sentence said by the default etc...).
I hate it.
Is there a way i can fix this? I've even tried to freeze Pico-TTS with Titanium, but it doesn't change a thing.
Thank you in advance!
PicoTTS and GoogleTTS are two different things, try to delete both of them and just use Ivona, there is also the option to set which TTS as default in Accessibility.

Thank you, I didn't understood that Pico a GoogleTTS were different things. I'll try to delete/freeze both of theme, hoping it doesn't break anything.
I've setted Ivona as default TTS in the settings, of course, but it doesn't work anyway.

Freezing Pico TTS and Google Text-to-speech Engine seems to work, at least in my first tests.
By the way, i also wrote to the Ivona support and that's what they answered to me. No really useful:
Hello,
Unfortunately this is a Google's mechanism therefore we are not able to fix this issue. Generally the Google Navigation picks the voice with the best responsiveness and that is why Default voice i picked from time to time.
The only thing we can do is to work on the voice performance, hoping this will meet Google's voice pick mechanism.

Uninstalling Google TTS Engine and Pico TTS seems to work.
Sometime the Google engine's voice comes back for a moment (i don't understand how this is possible), but Ivona TTS always gets preferred.
