Galaxy S4 Temperature Sensor - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Does anyone know where the location of the Temperature Sensor is?
No matter where i go with my S4, the temperature is always around 26C. I understand it's the ambient temperature and things like the battery can affect it, but i think since i've owned the phone, it's never gone below 20C, no matter where i take it.
Anyone else noticed this, or is that just how it is?

It's pretty accurate here.

Thanks for that.
Ok so it's situated at the bottom of the phone along with the Barometer. Does anyone elses show below 20C at any point? I understand it'll be influenced by handling/usage etc, but even when the phone is stone cold and the room is cold, it still shows in the mid to low 20's haha

Haven't tried it in a room below 20 degrees, will try it this evening if nobody else posted about it.

I'm gonna do some tests on it later on. For one, inside my car should be extremely hot today, seeing as it's been very warm outside, so that should reflect on the phone. I'll try find some cooler places to test it too.

Try sticking it in the freezer for about 5 minutes. It won't hurt the phone and if it doesn't go below 20 degrees, it never will.

Mine goes below that, was 13 degrees earlier

Done a quick test, and it seems that it does go below 20C.
When outside, it's going to about 18.3C which matched my car thermometer, so it seems it does work.
I still question whether the temperatures it gives when indoors are correct, but i don't have a proper thermometer to compare it to, so i can't check.

same "problem" here. try it servel times. but never gone under 25C°

Is s health the only way to access the sensors?
I've put it in my fridge and it was 8*C 60%humidity.

No, if you look for an app called Weather Station, that's a pretty good way to check the temperature.

There is an app called '' Temperature & Humidity'' in play store for our S4.
Great Little app to access the sensors.

after 5 minutes in the freezer
21°C
Works fine 4 me

There's an app called "Weather Station"

FYI CPU-Z from play store displays raw sensor values for all sensors. Temperature, humidity temperate and more.

To test any thing type *#0*# in you're phone dialer.

Message regarding battery temperature.

I've just gone to charge my phone and it's coming up with a message saying that charging is paused due to battery temperature.
I've not been using the phone and it's not hot.
Anyone else seen this?
I've unplugged it and tried it again but the message keeps appearing.

How hot is your battery? (c)
OP, how hot your batt actually is when this msg pops up?
YOu can get the temp with this simple and light app (one of many ways) called "Disp Battery Information"
I've run my battery up to 50c and it never stopped charging
The message has gone now but I've installed the program for if it happens again. The temp now is 31c. I don't know if that's normal or not.

Do you have a skin on the phone? There's a reason the official is porous.

No. Skin as in protective case. The official one is metal to transmit heat and loads of holes all over the case. It looks great.

Where does it feel hot, around the back camera or the whole back?
When mine becomes hot it usually concentrated around the camera, I guess if it is the whole backside of the phone it might be your protective case as mentioned.
@drspikes
I am interested in the official metal case, the store where I bought my phone didn't provide any accessories at that time. Do you have a part number by any chance?
METAL CASE!? Where!? I have two of the original Samsung cases, they're the mesh or vent cases, but I got them in black and red, and they're plastic. METAL!? WHERE!
I have a friend with a SGS2 and this message is popping now and then with no apparent reason. The phone is not hot or cold. It has no protective skin or case.
When the message appears he is unable to charge the phone. Only a reboot solves the problem.
I passed him the service code and 5 min. after he solved the problem with another reboot the temp was 32ºC.
Nothing unusual there. Also I suspect the temperature could not drop to a regular value in such a short time.
I saw this message on my 1 year old SGS last week for the first time. The phone was being used as GPS on my car, charging, with direct sun on it. When the message poped up I berely could touch the phone. The AC vent quickly solved the problem.
But this is a totally different thing. The phone is apparently at room temp. As soon as he connects it to the USB port, POP, the message appears!
I report as soon as the problem happens again with the event temperature.

Obviously,
Why would you want to use a mobile phone in a shower?
The S5 has flawlessly survived an hour inside a pool in 4ft deep water and an hour inside a washing machine -- it'll be fine in the shower :good:
In a boat? Can I use it in a boat? Can I use it in a boat while I wear a coat? How about next to a goat? Can I use it on a boat, wearing a coat, sitting next to a goat?

Yes, you will be electrified instantly as it packs a 220V battery which will zapp you untill the battery runs out This is why i never accept calls while i`am deep sea diving

Lolz, I didnt knew XDA Forums only packs trolls answers this days (this tread is full of them). I am doing a honestly serious question, I would like to use my phone in the pool or bathtub, currently I have the S4 and considering this a strong point to get the S5. I dont know enough of electronic devices to be sure if a phone can be risky for you under such circunstances (I heard stories about phones zaping people while not even on the water) so i just wanted to have some advice. Thanks anyways I suppose?

Oke serious, its an insulated 5V battery which cannot zapp you under normal circumstances, even if water is involved cause its build for that. And don`t believe these fake here say story`s. How many times has Elvis been seen since he died, do you believe that too?
Even though the phone is meant to be water resistant, I still wouldn't take it for granted. Low temperature water is almost certainly fine but may cause condensation inside the phone if the water is cold enough to cool the phone considerably, and likewise steam is a far different animal than in liquid form but should be safe as well.
Just make sure you close the flap securely as well as the battery cover properly.

[Q] Problem with Note 4 SpO2 sensor?

Does anyone have a problem with SPO2 readings? I have no issue with Heart Monitor but when I try to use SPO2, it fails 99% of the times (today it's 100% ).
I am not convinced if it's software or hardware issue, since i don't know if it is the same sensor. Does anyone have the same issue?

I've used the O2 sensor several times and feel it is registering a little low on occasion. It registered me at 70% one time, which I would think I would notice. Most of the time it registers 95% or higher, but I still think I am at 100%. I do have a thicker case on mine, Spigen Tough Armor, which recessed the sensor heavily. When I remove the case the sensor works fine.

I always get 98-100% , seems like it is working fine.
Finally I decided to give it to Samsung Support. I will let you know (for the record) if it was my fault
Im having the exact same issue that you are, Maverick. I have tried dozens of times to get an spO2 reading and I have not gotten a single positive reading. I would very much appreciate hearing what samsung support tells you.
Also having problems with mine. Takes about 5 attempts to get a reading

Average 40/42 (Snapdragon) degrees celsius (Stock LP 5.0.1) in just regular checking through things without really doing much . Is that too much ? Feels so much warmer than what I was used to with my previous Note 3 @ 4.4.2. Whats normal and whats too much here ?

Very normal temps.
Then how comes the Note 4 is so much warmer (noticable) than the Note 3 , where I never really felt any heat, no matter what I did. Just feels weird.

I'd suggest it's placebo. Honestly, 30-40degrees is totally normal. I had all the major flagships last year and apart from the G3 which was a heat and thermal throttling machine, they all averaged around 35-45 at idle. The Note 4 on my CPU temp testing is fine. I'm currently downloading and updating a lot of apps so it's a little warmer and it's sitting at 46. Spot on temperature for what it's doing.

Rule of thumb.....avoid going above 60º Celsius for too long.

Phone won't deep sleep on any ROM after submerging it in ice water

You probably don't remember me, I was one of the first people in the US to break a Galaxy Nexus International. Howdy! I'm a problem solver and experienced in Android so thought this might be fun to try and solve.
Short backstory: I was about to float down a river on a tube, when I realized I had my TMO Note 4 with me. I put it in a ziplock baggie and stowed it away in my beer cooler, which was floating next to me. Cooler ice turned to water, 3 hours and many beers later I pull the baggie out and it's filled with ice water. I pull the phone out and water streams out the charge port. I take it apart, put it on the dash of my truck, wait a while, drink more beers, put it back together, power it on, it still boots. Insane!
What's weird now:
Auto brightness is stuck at full bright no matter what setting it is (manual brightness works fine)
Proximity sensor for in-call screen blanking does not work
NFC causing battery drain-FIXED (bought new battery)
Battery drain from not going into deep sleep
Otherwise the phone works flawlessly. Really a testament to the hardware and build of the phone that anything works at all. I'm totally fine with the first 3, but the 4th I'd love to try and solve. What could prevent the phone from going to deep sleep? The CPU idles down just fine, governor is "interactive". I have clean installed both CM 12.1 and TEKXodus on Emotion kernel.

Wakelock Detector
Lol that's a great story . I'd say off the top of my head it sounds like the kernel is staying out of deep sleep because its trying to use the fried sensors (light and proximity) . my galaxy nexus does this if I use it without a sim card , it will never sleep , my fix was easy , leave it in airplane mode . but for you idk since the kernel will always look for those sensors , unless you can build a kernel without those drivers , you might have to deal with it or get the phone fixed .
This is genuinely interesting imo, have you tried going back to stock and running the test menu? (Can't remember the dial code off the top of my head)

I have gone back to a TW ROM but not full stock. I always run Greenify I tried the Prox Sensor Fix app, no luck unfortunately. More in the saga: I crashed a pit bike last weekend and slid on some rocks, which ripped through my shorts and subsequently the Note 4 front glass. I also bent the **** out of the metal frame #bendgate. I received replacement front glass on Wednesday, only to break the LCD while trying to heat gun the glass off the digitizer. I overnighted a new LCD assembly and metal frame which should be here this evening. I also have the new front camera/prox sensor that I need to install as well. Will keep you guys updated
New front camera, ambient light sensor, and proximity sensor installed, along with new touch digitizer and new LCD. Battery drain is still an issue, and the phone won't go into deep sleep. I also can't get logcat to show anything to dig further. Anyone have any suggestions?
