radio crash, sudden shutdown - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
a couple of weeks ago i noticed some radio "crash", the phone signal disappeared and slowly come back up (no issue on wifi so far).
this got worst when the frequency of this event raised, and one day, after a long pen and paper session with my friend i noticed my phone was off and the battery dead but i knew the battery was low, i thought "strange i didn't see the low battery notice" and i plugged it, booting it up.
days later things started to get worse, after incremental radio crash the phone shut down immediately (roughly at 80/70%)
while showing this issue i also had some software issue: time/date reset to 1-5-2005, wallpaper back to the animated on "phase beam" while i tried both a personal one and some from the stock gallery.
i upraded my baseband+bootloader to the latest, and then i passed from the latest Cyano to the latest Paranoid, and back to 4.2.2 stock
finally this morning i had a pc while the phone gave the issue, so i could take both logcat and bugreport
attached both and a screen of battery behavior
the fact that also some software component are influenced make me crazy.
hope some of you could give me a hint

re-attached the bugreport

Droid X locking up every night at 2:02am

Hey guys, so this has happened the last two nights -- at exactly 2:02am my Droid X locks hard. Just did it again. I have no idea what is going on here but I have to pull the battery.
Last night it was on the charger (And the screen was on) so when I picked it up this morning it said 2:02 on the lock screen. Just now I was listening to music and dead stop -- screen was off but I looked at the clock on my computer and sure enough: 2:02.
Just set the clock manually to 2:01 and started a song -- let us see what happens in one minute.
*SIGH*
My phone has been working generally well..... but then I had a strange issue last night where the phone became super unresponsive accessing the SD, so I rebooted. Then the 2:02 lockup .. and then today the battery drained really quickly. A check of CPU spy and the phone never entered deep sleep. Battery manager showed the phone never going to sleep as the "awake" bar went across the whole screen even though Screen on was less than 1 hour total.
Manual clock set to 2:01 did not result in a freeze as I let it go to 2:03... I just set it to 1:59 to see if that makes a difference.
Stock latest GB, root, debloat done myself (fresh install and debloat a couple weeks ago) .... really at my wit's end with Motorola phones. I have a Droid X2 but find that phone generally unusable due to the extremely lackluster performance including the constant audio dropouts, even with the latest GB release.
Anyone else ever seen this 2:02 thing? Or have any idea where I can even begin to look to fix it? I don't see a crontab file on here. I haven't installed any new apps other than the usual updates that seem to happen every day.
....Manual clock is now at 2:04 (from 1:59) with no freeze. So I don't know WTF is happening. I had rebooted the phone around 8pm tonight .. actually had to pull the battery. Did a "reboot" from the Terminal Emulator and the phone went black and never started rebooting.
I'm so fed up with this damn phone!!
That's not happening to mines
Hard reset your phone n back up SMS, files, etc.
Try different battery!

Nexus 4 stuck in standby - Hardware issue?

Hey guys,
I've bought my Nexus 4 end of January (first revision) and am having a major issue since I got it:
Sometimes (once a week, first two weeks even more often) it is stuck in standby. So when the phone is turned on, but the screen is off and I try to turn the screen on, it won't react at all. Most of the time, the notificationlight is blinking.
This is totally sporadically, but I think more often, when the timer is set, to get me up (or not^^) in the morning.
It won't even react on charging or attaching it to my PC. I logged it twice, but there was nothing special in the logfile (logged it with su; logcat > /sdcard/log.txt)
This can get quite annoying. All in all, this makes the Phone quite unusable, because, without trying to wake it up, you never know if it's still running and you are reachable or if it's already stuck...
First I thought, this would be, because of some softwareproblem, but I got this issue with every ROM I tried (even stock, where I got this problem the most...)
Should I send it back to Google for RMA or do you have any idea why this could be?
Thanks in advance,
acid_g
Same problem here. Also bought it at the end of January. At least once a week the screen won't turn on, and usually there is a notification light flashing. I've found lots of other people online with the same problem, but no solution. There's a ticket for it here:
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=52926
I called Google support, and they recommended doing a factory reset, but it didn't help; a couple days later the problem happened again. So yesterday I called them back and started the RMA process. I hope the new unit works. This problem is so annoying and frustrating. You never know if your phone is going to work when you pick it up.
its called sod, sleep of death. it can happen with undervolting, and some apps can bring it on

Constant Freezing/Rebooting Nexus 7 (2012)

Ok guys. I don't post often since I can usually find my answers by lurking the forums....but I'm at my wits end here. My 2012 Wi-Fi nexus 7 all of a sudden started acting funny one day. It would freeze u randomly, then reboot, then get stuck in a boot loop for about 10-15 minutes, then boot up, then freeze after about 1-2 minutes of use and repeat the whole process. This was on stock 4.4.2. I've since tried using the toolkit to reflash stock, fix bootloop, unlock and root...all of which I was able to do. None of which helped my issue. Although flashing AOKP DID seem to fix it for about an hour.
Anyway, I gave up on it for about a week and came back to it this morning. Although it wasn't even going to te google boot animation, just stuck on the google logo. So I reflashed stock 4.4.2 again. Now I'm back to square 1. So it boots and will function for maybe about a minute or 2 (or less) before freezing and rebooting.
Is this device shot? I'm out of Google AND ASUS warranty now
I posted something in the big help thread yesterday (probably a mistake). Mine is doing exactly what you describe in terms of working for about 2 minutes before freezing, then rebooting. Mine is 100% stock 4.4.2. Never rooted, unlocked, etc. I have the adb stuff, but I haven't even attempted anything, because it seems so unstable. I don't want a partial flash to screw it up even worse. I feel slightly better knowing that someone else is dealing with exactly the same thing in a similar time frame, so maybe it is a software thing, not a totally dead unit.
Well I may have made some progress. Since the warrenty is up anyway, I decided to crack it open. I noticed the GPU was getting extremely hot for just sitting at the home screen. So I enabled developer options and turned on some monitoring options (the fact that it stayed on long enough to do this is a miracle in itself).
Right now I have some overlay monitoring on including cpu usage and gpu rendering (on screen as lines). I also checked the "stay awake" while charging option. It's been on about 2 minutes so far, although graphics performance is horrible atm. Almost like project butter is disabled and it's running at half power....that could just be the monitoring overlay though. We'll see what happens...
*Update*
It made it 21 minutes, but it did reboot again. On restart, the OS smoothness is back to normal, and it does seem like it goes longer stretches without restarting now, however the issue is obviously still there. I should add that the back cover is currently off. which is starting to make me think this has to do with cooling

Okay....I just admitted defeat with this issue. Just ordered a replacement board for $30 because the resets are still happening. Upon reset, I can actually hear a part of the main board buzzing for about 5 seconds (not the speakers). Not to mention that prior to this issue, I was having a lot of wifi connectivity issues anyway. Hopefully the board arrives before my long bus ride to new york...

Note 4 freezes while charging after lollipop

I tried posting this in the Sprint thread but haven't gotten any answers yet so perhaps I'll have better luck here. I pasted both posts to show the initial problem and what I did (essentially I factory reset). I'm still having the same problem where my phone will freeze while I'm charging it (about 2-3 times/week) requiring a battery pull. Anybody else seeing this problem or have suggestions on what I should try? Thanks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Twice this week my alarm didn't go off (luckily I set a backup today) because sometime throughout the night something happened. When I woke up the phone was frozen on the yellow Sprint Spark startup screen. I needed to pull the battery and everything started up fine. I updated to Lollipop about 2 weeks ago which is where I'm guessing the issues stem from.
Is there anything I should try other than restoring to factory and starting over? I'd prefer to not have to wipe everything from my phone but these issues are becoming problematic. I am not rooted.
Thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So I ended up doing a factory reset and while the phone certainly started running faster with better battery performance after the reset I'm still having this issue. I would say it occurs 2-3 times a week. It has only occurred overnight which is typically when I charge my phone so I'm pretty sure it is related to being left connected to the charger. The majority of the times I will wake up with a dim yellow Sprint screen and everything else frozen though occasionally the screen will be black with the led notification light red. In both situations the screen will not respond to any button pushes or holds and I need to pull the battery and then everything will start up fine.
Does anybody have any suggestions here on what I should do? I guess I can try and restore one more time and see but I don't really know why it would be different and it is certainly a pain to keep restoring the phone and losing all my settings. I definitely don't want to root now since I believe that voids the warranty and if I can't figure anything out with this I'll certainly be requesting a new phone from Sprint. Before I start dealing with Sprint though I thought I would check here first. Through all my searches on the internet I haven't seen anyone else complaining about this problem.
Thanks.

Hi there. I have a Canadian Note 4 (W8) with Bell, and I am having identical issues.
While charging over night, I find my phone stuck on "Samsung" logo, with the bubble animal still running. Holding down the power button does nothing and the only work around is the battery pull. I noticed that it also gets warm (assuming from the screen on time?)
First tried cache wipe - no fix
Factory reset - no fix
Cache wipe again - no fix
Aaaand today I came into work late

Did your issues first start after you upgraded to lollipop?

Definitely after the upgrade.
While on KitKat, it never happened (1 month ownership). But after upgrading to lollipop, it has happened 4 times (6 nights since lollipop).
Have you figured anything out with your situation? Woke up this morning to my backup alarm and the Yellow Sprint screen on my phone.
I guess I'll have to try another factory reset and if it still happens try and get a replacement. It just doesn't seem widespread enough of an issue to be a software bug with 5.0.1.
Very frustrated. I did another factory reset but the issue still plagues my device. It still only occurs once or twice a week but when I hear my old clock radio alarm in the morning I know when I look over I'll see the yellow frozen Sprint Spark screen. I am completely out of ideas and guess I will need to have it replaced under warranty. I'm hoping Sprint won't give me a hard time as this will be very hard to demonstrate.
It definitely appears to be a software issue as it never happened before I upgraded to Lollipop but there must be more to it or others would be complaining.
If anybody has ideas please let me know. Thanks.
Response to Note 4 Freeezing while charging
I have found that after turning the quick charge feature off the problem is not happening. Hopefully this is fixed in 5.1
I'm having the same issue even after turning quick charge off..def a lollipop bug, never experienced this on kk.
I know its not the BEST option, but after taking the update to lollipop, sometimes left over kitkat files can make the system poop out. Sometimes a factory reset will take care of the leftovers. But of course, then you have to set your phone up again
If you've tried this or plan to to, let us know the results.
(When i first took the update, my heartrate monitor sensor was always on, so i did a factory reset and it fixed my problem).
Solved with workaround!!!
I faced this "sleep of death" too after updating to Lollipop. I had to pull out the battery almost every time after charging. Very annoying! I noticed though that my phone never froze in my car while charging. Thinking about the difference I realised that I keep my phone awake in the car while charging using Macrodroid (which I love anyway to automise all kinds of things). I made a simple macro which keeps my phone awake while charging and another one that returns the phone to normal while on battery.
While charging: Trigger: Power Connected; Actions: Keep Device Awake enabled & Screen Off, Constraints: None
On Battery: Trigger: Power Disconnected; Actions: Keep Device Awake disabled & Screen Off, Constraints: None
Off course there are alternatives available to Macrodroid that should be able to do the same.
My problems are solved, with and without fast charging. I hope this will help some of you as well.
same problem here
Ive tried turning off fast charging option on the powersaving mode
And also tried the option on developer mode, the "keep device awake while charging"
And even flashing dofferent firmwares from sammobile through ODIN and installed custom roms. These options doesnt resolve the issues on freezing while charging..
I think turnong off your device while charging is the only option..
Im using note4 N910C..

Thanks a lot, Mate. I'm trying your workaround now. Will report later if it works on my phone. BTW, so, are you sure it is a just a system issue? Definitely, isn't a hardware problem? Did you fix it, after your post -a month ago-, installing, for example, lollipop 5.1.1 or Cyanogenmod 12.1? I'm on 5.0.1, SimpleRom V4. Of course, mi device, N910C, is rooted.
Thanks again.
With lollipop 5.1.1 the problem is solved for me, even without this workaround.

I'm having similar issues as you guys. I found out that my phone will only perform normally when I charge it with my laptop USB port which I think is around 0.5amps. Anything above that, even a 1amp charger would cause the phone to freeze, reboot and turn off and not turn back on. The phone has been in repair 4 times and the problem is still there. Now every night I'm forced to charge my phone with my laptop which takes an age instead of the fast charger that came out of the box.
Currently my phone is still freezing and rebooting when I'm out and about and the only way I can get it to perform normally is when I plug it into my laptop. This normal functioning would only last whilst the phone is plugged in.

First phone freeze and Camera App seems to be hogging battery for some reason

Had my PH-1 for 3 months, today was the first freeze up of the phone, was stuck with home screen on and displayed.
Had to reboot by holding small button and Volume down. When phone rebooted it came up with the Android laying on its back with the open stomach hatch, had to reboot a 2nd time. Then had options like from Safe Mode, pushed small button below Volume to perform a regular restart.
Found my battery was running down quickly from a full overnight recharge. Looked at the Battery settings and it showed the camera was on top at 29% after about 5 hours WTH?? I did use the camera and this is what I was trying to use when the phone was frozen, but once the phone was rebooted, I snapped like 5 pictures and then I was pretty sure I closed the camera App. I tend to always try to close/kill all open Apps that I am not using.
So not sure what happened or why, just wanted to put this out there so others can read and may respond if this is a common problem due to some update or incompatibility.
Seems there may be a conflict with the latest Camera software and phone OS??
I had my phone freeze again today when I went to take a picture. This is an intermittent issue because I took quite a few pictures this morning without a problem. Then later this afternoon I took a single picture then wanted to take a 2nd and realized the phone was frozen.
Had to reboot the phone, seems to have cleared up for now?
I just noticed that the camera App just updated 6 hours ago on my phone. This was AFTER the 2nd freeze during camera usage.
Currently my phone is running Android stock 7.1.1 and the updated camera App is 0.1.095.007.
It is possible the latest camera App update has solved the freezing problem?
Will wait and update this thread in about a week about how things are working.
Just wanted to update this thread on phone freeze.
Seems that the problem may have been with a prior camera update. I had the phone freeze 2 times, shortly after the 2nd freeze the camera App was updated and since Camera App 0.1.095.007 was deployed I have not had any more problems with the phone freezing.
So hopefully I can say the Essential group was aware of the problem and release a very quick solution.
Still loving the Essentinal phone, would like more camera features, but I guess this will come with time.
Best part is I only charge phone every 2 days the way I use it. Have run Waze for over 3 1/2 hours multiple times with fresh charge and no external power and battery is still slightly over 50%.
So a new camera update version 0.1.097.006 was released and my phone was updated late yesterday or last night.
No problems since the last camera update that came out a few days after the update that caused the phone to lock up. Seems we are back to the same routine.
Used my phone to take a few pictures this afternoon, and guess what, phone locked up again after I took a few pictures and make an outing phone call right after taking the pictures. Put phone back on power after taking the pictures and making the call, I guess the camera App was still open in the background. Looked down and my phone display was on the camera App. Tried to close the App, no go. Unplugged the phone from power and the yellow power LED was still lit and the phone was non responsive.
Held down the power and volume down button to restart the phone.
Expect and hope an update the camera App is released soon to solve this issue. I have faith that the Essential team will resolve this quickly.
