network share on domain controller

I posted this in network forum but I don't think anyone reads that forum so I thought I'd try my luck here....
I'm trying to connect to a network share that is on a domain controller so uses domain level security/authentication instead of regular local computer authentication. When I try to connect to the computer I get an Action Failed message "Cannot connect shared path. The specified network resource or device is no longer available."
I checked through event logs on the server and it looks like the login/authentication went through just fine but the wm device seems to be rejecting it somehow....
Does anyone know what I might be able to do to fix this? Kind of a pain, I would like to be able to connect to my server's shares.

How are you attempting to connect to the server shares?
Using what method?
PocketLAN?
I.E.?

Even though you authenticate against AD there should be a local administrative account on that box, try logging on using it. Also what are the permissions on that share, do you have access to it and is your account part of that domain?

Just my $.02 try using z2 PocketLan..
I've used it for quite a while on my Axim, and now on my 6800.. It allows you to connect to a network share, you supply it with your login credentials (Active Directory) and save the connection. It also comes with a bunch of other handy stuff like an IP range scanner, ping, yatta yatta ..

I use Resco Explorer and it doesn't seem to have any problems at all connecting to network shares on our domain controller at work.

i just tried on my domain, i can connect to shares on other pcs and servers, but not on the DC, maybe theres a setting that doesnt allow connections from non domain members
and just FYI, domain controllers dont have any local accounts

ya no local accounts... local computer accounts work fine but it won't connect using domain accounts to authenticate...
I'm not sure if this is a setting on the DC for authentication or if there is something I need to do on the wm device?

Zenoran: You still haven't told us how you're trying to connect. I can't tell you how to do it unless you tell me what sort of program you're using, or whatever. Capiche?
I use z2 PocketLAN without issue, accepts DC auth no problem. Do you use PocketLAN?

Oh sorry! Using Resco File Explorer... are there others I should try? I bought that program because it seemed to do everything. Will give PocketLAN a shot.

hmmm tried pocketLAN and it only locks up when I try to click on that server... bad bad...
something really fishy here because even non-authenticated user should be able to browse that server and see public shares... no one else have issue? maybe it's a server 2008 thing?

I noticed on DCDs new verision that has windows mobile 6.1 , that it has an icon under Connections called "domain enroll"

lol ya... that's a wm6.1 thing.. ive never been able to get that to work either. no posts for it as well that i could see... i guess no one does much domain integration with their titans?

the domain enroll is a bit of an odd thing, i cant even find much documentation on it from microsoft, but from what i can tell it just integrates with an exchange server, provided the server has mobile device manager installed
im not even sure what features it enables

Selectively disable net access by app?

I have a Touch Pro2 which connects to the net every 15 minutes for reasons that I'm not aware of (I have Outlook and Weather set to Manual, have disabled Latitude in Google Maps, etc). SPB Wireless Monitor tells me only that system.exe or services.exe are doing the accesses.
Since my provider charges per session this can get quite expensive, so I've been forced to turn 3G/GPRS access on/off manually using NoData.
Is there a way of selectively enabling net access for designated applications only? e.g. allowing it to Opera and Outlook only by default, and selectively enabling other apps on demand?
Alternatively, is there a way of finding out which apps are trying to access the net without my knowledge? (e.g. by forcing a prompt every time an application attempts 3G/GPRS access)?

Hi,
If you grab a trial of SPB Wireless Monitor,that will show what apps and how much data has been used per application.

i think this is a greate idea. someone should really develop this.
basically the user would provide the application with an approved list of applications that can connect using the 3g/edge connection. the rest can only connect using wifi or activesync

but it doesnt do anything after it tells you this stats.
a simple application similar to "no data" should still be developed. what do you all think?

Sure, this wont stop the apps, but as the OP had asked, this will let him know what apps are accessing the NEt

I tried installing and runnign TaskMgr but it hangs during startup on my TouchPro2. What's the best alternative Task manager app?

I suspect that they are your Network Operator settings checking for updates or
something like that.

They make 87 connections in 18 hours - does that sound likely? It works out very expensive for those tariffs which charge a per-connection fee.
Any idea how I could disable this (or confirm that this is indeed the explanation)?

Hutchison3G sets up virtually all their supplied phones with network configurations to connect very frequently like what you describe.
See if you can simply disable your data connection. As with H3G in Australia, you dont get charged when it is simply accessing its own intranet, and when its roaming it only displays a 'lite' homepage.
Perhaps consider a non-network issued rom, or determine whether that data is 'free intranet' or not.

I already use NoData to manually enable/disable the data connection when it's required/not required. I was just hoping for a more elegant solution to stop unauthorised apps incurring data charges, while not sacrificing the convenience of automatic access for apps that I use alot (like Opera and Outlook)

You can try PPC version of ProxyCap to restrict or proxify access per application - http://www.proxycap.com/
It doesn't pop up when an aplication attempts to communicate with the Internet, so manual configuration is required. You'll need to set up proxy bypass for the applications you want to be allowed to connect and use localhost as a proxy by default, so that other applications can't communicate with external hosts. You can also filter traffic based on destination IPs and ports. E.g. an easier solution may be to allow http and https traffic only for all applications and drop everything else if you only need to use a web browser.
ProxyCap may not prevent your GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA connection from being established every time, but at least there will be application or protocol filtering in place and thus less unexpected traffic. ProxyCap does not seem to be able to filter ICMP traffic. It appears to be allowing DNS traffic through regardless of the filtering configuration too, as it can't be proxified and is required for proper name resolution.
Another alternative is PPC firewalls like

I haven't used any of these products though and can't recommend them.
Both seem to be more user friendly than proxycap though.

Is there a firewall app which blocks all traffic like the personal firewalls for PCs do? With it you could
- whitelist certain apps for all destinations e.g. Google Earth, GMail, browser
- whitelist certain destinations in general e.g. *.google.com
- blacklist certain apps e.g. SuperGameButWhichAlsoPhonesHome.apk
- pops up if an app tries to connect to an yet unlisted destination and blocks or allows by default
The problem with permissions is, it's all or nothing. E.g. I want allow most apps to connect to Flurry or GoogleAnalytics to help the developers improve and understand the usage or if it uploads pics to facebook, but if an SMS app reads my SMS and also has the internet permission (probably for ads and analytics), who knows they're not also transferring my SMS?
Editing the hosts file is not an option as this would only be a blacklist and also very tedious to maintain.
Of course you need root access and it also needs to be open source for it to be trusted. I'm thinking of an addonn for CyanogenMod or so.

It works fine for me on a g1!

DroidWall does not prevent Wifi connections at all.
As such, as a firewall it's next to useless.
It's more a "3G data connection" limiter than a real firewall.

I don't understand your problem with DroidWall. I don't even have a data plan, so I only use it for Wifi. Sometimes I forget I have it installed, open a program that needs internet access, only to find that it won't work until I allow it to have the access through DroidWall. Works everytime.

[Q] Not able to download large files when tethered?

I cannot download files from my PC i.e. jpgs, vids etc... I subscribe to easynews and when I tether my HTC Hero 2.1 using Wireless Thether v1.60 for root users nothing happens.
I've noticed the same problems when using hotels wifi's where it notices that it's a large file and it stops downloading.
From the phone itself it downloads fine, but when I tether to PC it does nothing. Do I need to proxy somewhere?

Hmm, I don't know that many others have this problem that you're describing. Try updating your version of Wifi Tether. I believe there's a version 2.0 out, perhaps that could solve your issue.

I think you can also upgrade it directly from the Market.

Sounds like a problem with your PC's wireless device.
Try uninstalling it from device manager (I'm assuming Windows operating system), then reboot your computer, let it reinistall the hardware and try it again.

No, it's not the PC... I tried it with three different ones. It's something SPRINT does from preventing downloads of big videos and sound files. If I use a datacard on the PC it works fine. The problem is when I tether. I have noticed that when I use a proxy site and then go to easynews.com I then can download without a problem.
It seems like Sprint might put some type of restriction on certain sites... can that be true and is there a way around it?

Solved problem by installing PaperBus "you can use paperbus to access blocked web sites and bypass internet filters and such."
Now when I tether I can access easynews. Like I said, it seems that Sprint blocks downloads from this and perhaps other newsgroup services.

If an ISP where to be blocking a particular set of information from any site - you wouldn't believe the hell that would be unleashed upon them by the FCC and nerds alike.

Vibrant Wifi problem (Clean Access)

I have a stock Samsung Vibrant. It connects to my home wifi network just fine and is very fast.
At my school we have to register the mac address' of devices we have on their Clean Access servers. I have registered many devices that work fine.
I registered the mac address of my Vibrant, and it can connect to the wifi, but it will not load a web page. Does anyone have any idea of what is wrong.
I also registered my roommates Vibrant. His does not work either.
I work at the Schools Tech Support so I have access to register and edit my phone on their Clean Access servers.
Does anyone have any solutions?

are you using WPA/WPAv2 or WEP + RADIUS authentication? Does your vibrant obtain an IP address successfully? Can you ping the default router?

The wifi at school is an open network. I can fully connect to their wifi.

Im going out on a limb here. I am going to say its the Clean access and your "open network". I assume on your schools computer you use your student ID and some password. Your phone would need the same thing if that is the case. I know at my school, iphones are the only phones that can access our clean access. If its not the case then i am sorry.

my school runs clean access and it works fine. but they have two networks a guest and a login. i use the guest cause i don't want to waste the time to login. but i can try it on monday. typically with linux (i.e. android) you have a web portal and have to agree to some antivirus bs by clicking a button and that's it (and login for the non guest network). one thing i have noticed, though, is that typically i have to turn wifi on, connect to the network, try to load a page, it doesn't work, then i turn wifi off then immediately back on and try to load a page and it takes me to the login/terms portal page.

You should remove the IP from post. Anyways, it seems like the handshake is good. Note down the address of redirected terms and conditions page you get when trying to go online from a laptop. Then enter the same address in vibrant's browser once you are connected through Wifi ( or set it as homepage) and see if that lets it through.

Probably an issue with Android's lack of native NTLM support. AFAIK this is still unresolved. Have you tried using Fennec rather than the stock browser? I've heard you can authenticate properly using it.

interesting. i use dolphin hd and it works for the clean access web authentication page.

Could be, if your school does not have a guest account login for devices, that you are getting on the segregated network because CA cannot verify the "cleanliness" of your device. When I setup CA it verified patch levels and such on the non-guest network, so unless CA comes out with a Android client/access list, it may not work.

except then it wouldn't allow osx or linux. clean access requires an app for windows to verify service pack and av and whatever, but for linux and osx it doesn't. it wouldn't be able to (at least for linux).

That is correct but it can ID the operating system and has exceptions for those flavors ...

I don't think it's an android thing because I had my G1 on the servers.
Normally what happens if you aren't registered on Clean Access is, if you open a web browser, you will be automatically redirected to an authentication page where you put in your school ID and password. This would work fine and allow me to get on the wifi, but it never came up on the web browser, it just tries to load the page for awhile and goes to a 'Page cannot be displayed' page.
Also I have tried using different browsers, including Dolphin HD.
If I can just get to the authentication page even it will be fine, I could work with that.

That is exactly what I said my last reply...Try putting https infront of your authentication URL, and make sure the java-script etc. is on in your browser...Try clearing cache and hit refresh as well. Also, see what happens if you set that URL as homepage...

did you try turning on wifi, wait for it to connect, try to load a page (any page because it will redirect you), wait for it to time out, pull down the notification bar, turn wifi off, turn it back on and then reload the page? i know it sounds dumb, but this is the only way i've got it to work at my school and it works every time...

to what flavors? i'm guessing android will show as linux since it's based off a linux kernel. more than likely it checks for windows, and if false goes to the default linux/osx page because to clean access those aren't threat os's.

they don't have the authentication URL on their homepage so I don't know what it is, it should automatically redirect me to it.
Also when I connect to wifi, try to load a page, let it time out, turn off wifi, turn it back on and connect again, and then refresh the page.. nothing happens it times out again.

Ok so I did find out the authentication page URL. Typed it into my phone. I had high hopes when a page saying "You are being redirected to the network authentication page. If you are not redirected automatically, then please click HERE".
Anyway it did redirect me, to a "Web page not available"... etc.
In the default browser it gave me the error... "Data connectivity problem. A secure connection could not be established". umm wtf?

Can you communicate with other protocols/ports? I used to be able to exploit a bug with our school's CCA servers where I could just connect unauthenticated and use SSH. (Maybe it was a feature?)

I can't use any other web protocols.

it's a t mobile vibrant either kernel or rom problem. My phone connected the very first time I tried to use it at an argosy site, then never ever ever again.
so. I used wifi manager to find out what the ip, gateway, subnet mask, and dns 1 and 2 were. I went to settings, wifi, options key to go to advanced options, from there selected static ip and entered all the info I gathered
bam! ! Connected every time.
Oh and btw, the reason I say its a tmobile vibrant rom or kernel problem is that on fusion, Eugene's and bionix final, I was able to connect right away, every time . And on my f friends att fascinate and verizon captivate, they never had to enter the static ip like I did. They connected right away every time . Yet everyone I know that had s vibrant kept having the same proble. m i did .
Tmobile. What a piece of ****. Anyway I figured nobody had this figured out so I'd jump in.
