[Q] Battery drain due to Google contacts sync - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there someone experiencing a battery drain with google sync when contacts are enabled.
I was experiencing a battery drain since the first day of use: loosing 10% when idle.
After investigating (google service was not listed as a heavy app in battery usage like the screen), I've discovered an excessive data usage when looking at the data usage section: 140mo on 2 days for google sync service.
When looking at the google account section, my contacts were syncing "every minute": leaving the screen turn on show me the little circles in action "every minute", the last sync time was also set to the current time or juste a few minutes ago.
So for now, I've disabled contacts sync and everything is ok now: first day of use with 3G on and loosing only 14 percent in one day with some calls
I've tried to remove, re-add the account, nothing works, I must disable the contacts sync.

I had this issue also - continuous contracts sync. Resolved only by upgrading to ME2 firmware...

Thanks, I will try that because problem is still not solved for me !

I'm having the same problem. Had to disable the sync. The phone get cool. No more traffic of data and battery drain,
Hope to get resolved.

I'm having this problem too. I'm using I9505VJUAMDM firmware (the latest update for me) and I have to disable contacts sync. Do we have any workaround or fix for this?

I resolved the problem making a factory reset and wipe. After installing everything, the phone still works fine. Now I´m happy with my battery. LoL

I still have the problem. It´s with google contacts. Start to sinc every two or three minutes.
Does anyone got resolved?

Factory reset did the trick for me about Google Contacts, but the problem now happens with People Details Syncing.

Problems downloading from the market

For the past 48 hours I have been having problems downloading anything from the UK market? Everything stops at 'Starting download'. It had been working fine until then and I uninstalled the few apps I had recently installed to see if that was the problem but no joy.
When I turned my phone on this morning it downloaded all the updates I had been trying to get yesterday so I assumed it was working. When I then tried to download some more updates the problem was there again. Any ideas why this is happening?
I am running Cronos 2.1.3
I had the same problem yesterday. Rebooting the phone did nothing. However, I saw a post that said switching on airplane mode and then disabling it might work. Fortunately, it did. Hope it does for you.
o thought it was jsut me. Although the problem fixed itself after a reboot, and is fine now.
Running VillainROM 10.3.
I thought it had somethign to do with my phones low storage.
Android Marketplace
Is anyone still having problems downloading today?
I've just got back Hero back after HTC fixed the screen so I'm looking to reinstall all my apps - however nothing will download at all. I've tried WiFi, 3G, rebooting the phone, switching airplane mode on/off, logging in & out of googletalk & also hard resetting.
Still all I get is "starting download" and nothing else.
I can't see of anything else to try.

Thanks. Seems to have worked. I found that I had to leave airplane mode on for a while before turning off. If I turn it off and then straight back on doesn't seem to work
This is now getting stranger and stranger.
I left the phone overnight and awoke to find that about half a dozen apps that I'd previously downloaded (they show in my download list but not currently installed as the phones been wiped) had actually downloaded and installed without any problems at all.
The other half dozen or so apps haven't downloaded yet. And the ones that I actually told it to download also haven't.
I've left the phone for another 6-7 hours this morning while I was out .... and still nothing has downloaded. I've got 2 things that say "starting download" and that's it.
Yeah - I'm back to having the problem again. I'll try turning airplane mode on for a while. This is really strange. I wonder if we have not installed the same application (or an update) that caused this. I think most recently I installed the latest Evernote. Did you happen to do that as well?

I don't have Evernote. I also uninstalled apps I had recently downloaded.
As far as i know IT is a market Problem. Some have it, other Not. Two friends have the same problem, one with a g1 and the other with a legend. Google says it could take time till tomorrow.

In a post in this thread http://android.modaco.com/content/t-mobile-pulse-pulse-modaco-com/315840/android-market-resolved/ someone claims that this is the fix:
Turns out google have screwed up some (if not all) UK accounts with the switch to GMail.
The fix is simple. Change your account from @googlemail to @gmail, wait an hour (recommend 2) then factory reset your phone, sign into your google account (@gmail) and your good to go
You can change your account from @googlemail to @gmail in the GMail setting (On a desktop computer not a phone) The option is in tiny writing

Before I try this I wanted to ask: Is everyone having problems in the UK and do you all have @googlemail email addresses?

I was having the market problem from Thursday to Sunday last week, changing my Google account to @gmail.com and doing a factory reset (I didn't read anything about the 2 hour wait, so skipped that step) fixed it for me. The other potential fixes I read about like opening GTalk, turning Airplane mode on and off did nothing for me.
I had the same problem. I tried wiping cache from recovery and applications menu. In the end I juts re-flashed after a Titanium backup which solved the issue. I was running VillainROM 12
I have changed my email from @googlemail to @gmail, done a factory reset and the market seems to be working. A PITA: thanks Google
Yeah - I've got a U.K. googlemail address. I was a little hesitant to switch from googlemail to gmail because I thought people had a lot of problems with that. Do your paid apps get transferred?

By factory reset, do you mean a full wipe? So I'd have to install all my apps again?
Sorry for being a bit thick but if I'm going to do a wipe, may as well change the ROM again
Yup. Full wipe

G2 stopped auto syncing Gmail?

And iv checked everything, sync is enabled everywhere. If I turn off sync and turn it on again, whatever is waiting comes through, but then never again. I even just did a factory reset and flashed the new update, and its still broken, before and after update. WTH could cause Gmail to stop syncing that a factory reset wont fix?????
even i am facing the same problem since this morning....gmail wont auto sync!! i have to refresh it manually.
Another thing i noticed is that i cant find the visual voicemail app in the market...does anyone have the apk for it?
wow im glad to here its not just me, i missed about 2 days worth of emails (I should have known...no way i could actually go 2 days with out some bs from work) before i realized it
Me as well. I haven't updated my phone yet.. so I don't think it's the ota causing the issue. I've missed numerous emails since yesterday.
Glad its not just me, I wonder if Gmail is borked for everyone at the moment? Im surprised we're not hearing more about this....
ive done everything but a factory reset, i have not had gmail sync since about 12pm MST
try going into settings/applications and find gmail and click it. clear the cache first and see if it works, otherwise clear data... it'll resync from scratch. this happens randomly and this usually fixes it.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
ive been doing that about once an hour, still nothing.
I did both of those things multiple times, they didnt help. Then I did a factory reset, that also did nothing. I feel like if a factory reset doesn't help the problem is probably on google's end.
Mine has been doing this since yesterday (before OTA) and has been doing it today as well (since OTA).
I had to load the shipping ROM due to deleting Google Goggles before the OTA. So I doubt if a factory reset or anything will help the situation. I'm not getting automatic syncing of Gmail at all. I believe its something on Google's end. Hopefully it gets sorted out soon.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I've updated with the OTA and my gmail is syncing, so I doubt it's the update that's causing the issue. I did have this happen to me before when gmail stopped syncing, but all I had to do was to go back to "settings" -> "accounts & sync" and turn on auto-sync for gmail again.
I am only getting my gmail via manually choosing refresh. Also, deleting on the phone will not delete on my computer. Annoying. This has happened before, and seems to get resolved in a couple of days.
Seems to be an issue with other Android handsets as well.
I have a link, from Google Support forum, but since I'm a new user here, it will not allow me to submit the link.
Seems like Google is working on a fix though.
Well, that makes me feel a little bit better.
I noticed yesterday it wasn't syncing, so I followed the normal clearing of cache and data, and checked all the syncing settings.
It definitely has to be an issue on the other end for everyone to be having this problem at the same time.
same here. I thought the G2 update messed up the Gmail sync, but then I realized that my Nexus One was doing the same thing as well which I use as a tablet from time to time via wifi. Let's be patient and have Google work the issue, just a matter of time.
Easy fix
Go to settings and disable auto sync
Then turn off phone
Turn phone back on
Go to settings and enable auto sync
This fixed my issue after installing the updated OTA

Tried dilfatx's fix to no avail. Hopefully Google fixes this up quickly.
You are correct.. it worked for me for few hours.. tested it out.. now its not sync again.. this is a whole other issue..

Android central is reporting some issues with Google and sync e-mail accounts. Apparently Google is already hard work resolving the issue.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OTA UPDATE!!!!

Battery Drain + Heat

Hello,
Since yesterday, HD2 back becomes very hot for no reason (no new apps installed for many months) and battery is drained within 4-5 hours (from 100%).
Same when I restart the phone. However, it randomly fixes itself for no reason too.
I also can't wake up the phone just by pressing HANG UP key, I have to HOLD IT for 5 seconds for screen to highlight.
Any ideas?
Official 3.14 ROM
Are you using a googlemail account, if so delete it and reboot the phone. remove battery for 10 secs.
Wow, you are a hero. Yes, I do.
Is this a known bug? Any fixes?
Do I just re-add account then?
Excellent, worked for me to.
Had the same problem with my HD, deleted the Gmail account now, and I'll se if it helps ... the only thing that maybe is wrong (people ask why Gmail not something else) is maybe related to Gmail's new priority inbox thing, maybe it makes extra stress on the phone to process the mail ... I know a lot of people already had this feature, but in my case, my Gmail Inbox got the priority thing just before the HD2 started acting up, so that's why I'm assuming it's somehow related to all of this ... then again, maybe just a coincidence that doesn't have anything to do with it ... I think it's too early for speculations ...
Btw, my first post here

Welcome and a helpfull first post
Don't get the idea that I don't have anything better to do and just type here, but here's and update ... The phone is cooling down, the battery life holds normally, and you can turn on the phone from standby by pressing any button, like you used to before (some people reported that you could only turn it back from standby by long pressing the power button, myself included)
I also had this problem and someone on the Tmobile forum said XDA suggested to delete the Gmail accounts. This was my response on the other forum:
"Deleted all Gmail email accounts I had on my phone. I can verify that this corrected the problem and my HD2 is now working normally.
This is definitely not a good permanent solution because I use multiple gmail accounts. I also noted that when I did have my Gmail accounts on my phone, it would hang when trying to communicate with google servers. If you went to inbox, and looked at the status message at the bottom of the screen. It would hang at like "Connecting" or "Disconnecting"."
Also of note; this problem just started happening in the last few days and I've had my HD2 with multiple gmail accounts setup since release.
First-time poster...
We've done the same thing (deleted our Gmail accounts). After the battery recharges - it went completely dead after only 6 hours off the charger - we'll see if/how it works
Mike
Thanks for posting the gmail issue and fix. I had been having the same issue since Thursday night, and was almost ready to call T-Mobile to try to get a replacement, but saw the post here just by chance. So far it is working the way it was before, so it's much better. I even tried a hard reset(after a backup, of course), but had gone through and setup all of my stuff again right away, so I was still having the issue.
T-Mobile is now listing this as a known issue - last night when I called, they weren't so you can imagine the number of calls they've received already. My advice: if you are a T-Mobile customer and haven't reported this issue, please do. The more they see it is affecting, maybe the quicker they'll get a resolution for it.
Mike
I've had the exact same issue with my HD2 since Thursday evening. I just found this thread about Gmail and have deleted my Gmail account from the phone's e-mail app. Crossing my fingers to see if that fixes it.
I have a trouble ticket open with HTC regarding the issue and have made them aware of the possible Gmail interaction problem. The tech helping me said he will explore it and also that "GMail did recently perform a server side security change". Hopefully HTC and Google get their heads together and figure out what is going on.

euro hd2
Also same situation with euro version HD2.
Someone on the HD2 Facebook page is reporting that if you go into Task Manager, the email client is using 80%-90% of the CPU. No wonder it's getting warm...
Great. And I was prepared to do an HR in the morning because of this. Hope there will be an permanent solution for this soon.
Just to touch base... since deleting the Gmail account and recharging the phone, it has worked flawlessly. A little too late to test the battery life (I won't be up near that late) but I'll let y'all know tomorrow.
I am a super noob when it comes to this my brother is having this problem how do you delete gmail from the HD2 sorry but I'm an android guy trying to help a windows
After removing my Gmail account from the phone it seems to be back to normal. Hopefully they find a fix soon.
Rob
Is this only an IMAP issue as I have 3 gmail accounts (POP3) on my T-Mob HD2 & they are all working fine without bugging the HD2.

Strange battery issue.

Yesterday, I got 3 hours of display time, 26 hours of uptime, and 2hrs of talk time before the phone hit 22%.
It was awesome!
Today I've used it even less and maybe had the display on for an hour, no talk time, and a couple of texts. Down to 20% in 5 hours.
Recalibration didn't work :/
Anyone else having this issue?
I'm using the OTA update, rooted via the preinstall method.
My battery went absolutely bonkers after the OTA GB update. See attachment.
I did a factory reset -- still didn't help.
I then took a look at logcat and saw Motoblur was making a request every ~2 seconds to sync my Live e-mail account. Even when my phone was idle! It appears this has fixed my problem but I haven't given it a thorough test yet.
Are you syncing with any Live accounts?

Nope, I actually set it to sync them only over wifi. I was out in the city all day, so I had my wifi off.
I need to check out logcat for sure.
I actually just froze a bunch of blur services a few minutes ago, I'm hoping that will solve my issue.

[Android 4.3 Bug] Messaging app draining my battery!

I sideloaded the 4.3 update in my Nexus 4 (non-rooted, full stock) last night. Everything went well... until I noticed the battery draining fast, way faster than on 4.2. The culprit seems to be the stock Messaging app. Does anyone has any problem like this after updating to 4.3? I have a screenshot:
http://i.imgur.com/NbF2uFc.jpg
Do you think doing a factory reset would help? It seems I'm not the only one with the issue since a very recent ticket describing the same situation (alhought far less worst in terms of draining than mine) was submited here: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=58149 . I already stared and replayed with my situation in the issue.
Thanks!
I also had something with 4.2.2
For me it was Bluetooth: 48d 6h 23s running.
I think that's just miscalculation.
I definitely noticed a battery drain but didn't check what was causing it... On a fresh cycle now so I'll post more later tonight but interested in whether others are noticing the drain as well

With a full charge, after 15 hours and with only 1 hour screen time, i.e. barely used it, the battery went to 40%. I'm going to believe the report of the battery since this battery draining isn't normal at all.
I've got this issue, too. Thanks for the tracker link, I've starred it.
try reflashing 4.3 and clear cache before you do it.

you're right. try otherwise only clear cash of the message app? and then restart the app.
I factory-reseted it in the Recovery and apparently it is solved. So if anyone has this problem just try a factory reset.

I've just noticed exactly the same, default messaging app on about 6hr 50 after 7hr off charge. I never use my for MMS as never got it working correctly.
However I've fixed it for now by disabling the default message app and installing GoSMS. Battery has dropped about 1% in the last 2 hrs
MMS connectivity comes back again

Hi I tried all the above, including a factory reset, and then disabled mobile data. This immediately stopped the messaging app from running between 0.2 - 0.9% CPU constantly.
Deleting all messages seems to have no permanent effect, after sending another long SMS, the problem returns and I see Messaging constantly running in Watchdog even after the SMS has long been sent. No MMS is ever sent or received.
The only solution seems to be to disable mobile data, but I need this running at all times. I have already removed all the redundant APN's and also removed all traces of MMS server information from the current APN that I am using. Yet as soon as mobile data is available, immediately Messaging starts to consume CPU for no good reason.
I have even tried a modded mms.apk and also Xposed framework to stop long SMS's being split up into MMS messages but this has no effect either.
All these things including deleting messages, is temporary, only for the issue to return.
Is there a way we can get a modded mms.apk for those people who really don't want MMS, so that it never tries to start connecting to MMS server each time data is enabled? Its infuriating that its starting to try and connect constantly when it hasn't been told do so, its draining battery, and doesn't seem to be sophisticated enough to know that there is nothing to connect to so it should stop trying (as all MMS information has been removed from the APN)?
Thanks....
My only solution was to stop the default app and use either Handscent or GoSMS. I tested Go but ended up with handscent as I didn't like the way Go recorded recent contacts history.
Either way, problem fixed but would prefer to use stock
I discovered this issue on my 3 day old Nexus 4 today. Very frustrating. 2 hour and 15 minute wakelock for "MMS Connectivity" accounting for 42% of my battery drain.
