Galaxy S2 clock widget - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to get the S2 clock widget on the N4? Coming from the S2, I love that clock. Just clean and nice looking on top of having the weather, etc. I know there are all sorts of widgets on the market, but I was just curious about something similar to the S2's?

umm no
because S2's widgets and all requires TouchWhiz framework
Unless u plan on putting an ugly touchwiz launcher, dont think u can have it
Although there are other alternatives

Thanks for the clarification. I see the alternatives in the market, it just seems like the S2 one was so clean and nice. Thanks though!

Why 1/10 for widgets? while they may not have as many as sense ui you can still use Android widgets as well as Samsung widgets...it at least warrants more then 1/10 >.>
Also aren't all the old widgets from winmo, symbian and even new ones from bada compatible with TouchWiz?

I think the touchwiz widgets are useless but androids are fine. I dont use any of the touchwiz widgets so thats why i said 1/10. Not sure about winmo, symbian and bada compatibility.

This is an old article so don't know if they kept it with TouchWiz 3.0..but thats whats it states :/

If someone could test it, then it would bee interesting :/
IMO, they both suck. Sense sucks less in that it is more refined but is far more pervasive. You really can't just turn it off as its fully integrated in the os. Touch wiz is easier to just get rid of.

Agreed. Now that applications can integrate accounts into Android, I don't think Sense brings any extra functionality to the table. At least Touchwiz has the power controls on the notification drawer, but I'd have stock Android over either. Pretty much a lose/lose.
If I had to choose to keep one, I suppose I'd say Sense, just because I (perhaps irrationally) enjoy using it more. I do love Sense's weather widget, and I haven't found anything close enough in the Market.

Try weather & toggle widget. The default skin sucks but load the htc one and it looks just like htcs. It even has the weather animations. The pic in my profile is my n1 with the weather widget.

The flip clock's fine, but the weather widget looks completely dissimilar.
If you want something exactly like the htc clock widget google "fancy widget"
This is great stuff folks. I really appreciate all the feedback. I am hoping this little "comparasion" thread will help others coming into the EPIC know what they are getting. It's better to hear it from real life users then the tech pundits...
Thanks to all...
I'm a big fan of Sense, but really the only thing I'll miss is the clock/weather (I alreeady have the weather toggle widget) and the HTC calendar, which I think is the perfect calendar widget. I was using Pure Calendar widget, but it didn't fit my needs as well as the HTC one did.
The main reason that someone wouldn't like Touchwiz is because they're so used to Sense. It's just like going from iPhone to Android. The person that's used to the iPhone would prefer the iPhone over an Android phone, and vice versa.

They both come with the same stock music player.
I came from my touch 3g.. On att so no 3g and it was my first android experience. I was sold within a week then waited for captivate to come out to use my upgrade. Never going back. Sense vs touchwiz is moot if you actually plan on using all the great upgrades in these forums. Stock stuff can and usually should be replaced even if its super duper pretty. Set priorities on hardware.

For those who are coming from sense and love the weather and clock widget, google "fancy widget". Its an exact duplicate. If you miss the other widgets from sense like the bookmarks, calander, people, etc., Launcher Pro has your back there. It is bringing all the sense ui goods
I'm coming from WinMo 6.5. I liked Sense, but are Sense, TouchWiz, etc. really even needed? I played with the Android port to WM, and IIRC, you can install widgets and such on top of stock Android. Just wondering if there would be more benefit to just rooting and getting that off the phone period.

Absolutely not, in the end they add very little in the way of functionality, though at least Touchwiz attempts to with 5.1 sound and the power control shortcuts in the notification bar.

Level up turned Beautiful Widgets into Ugly Widgets? Any alternatives?

Hey all,
So seeing as level up have ruined beautiful widgets, does anyone know of any good alternatives?
Most if not all of the clocks and weather themes I used are gone, and the clocks are low rez, lose time,
and the Home weather widget is gone. The weather part of the app is ugly and poorly designed now too.
So i'm trying to find some clock widgets to replace it as I am furious they took an app I loved and replaced it with
an abomination lol.
Cheers.
I actually prefer the new version of BW. Using the HTC One X theme found on the theme market
But I see that HD Widgets is pretty up there in popularity. Not a fan of it though.

Thanks I will take a look. More than anything I need one that keeps time, which this one it seems still doesn't
I am annoyed because almost all the themes left for the clocks are exactly the same, all the home weather one's I liked, unless i'm not looking properly like angry birds, are gone, and the app is now slow and laggy.
Guess it's all down to personal preference but I just wish they would offer the old version.

HD Widgets looks excellent I might have to give it a go. Although I'm reluctant to give another Dev my cash, they
are editors choice on the play market, and I guess I could backup the .apk in case it is updated in future

Hit the thanks button if I helped I bought BW when it was on sale so I'm not too crazed about it, idk I like the improvement of BW 5.0 doesnt feel laggy at all, especially not on the N4.
I have both HD Widgets and Beautiful Widgets. There are a lot more style choices in HD Widgets. HD Widgets also allows you to customize the look of the widget more than BW.

I used The 4x1 Weather widget in Beautiful widgets with the SimpleSolid skin. But when the 5.0 update came, it made the icons in the widget bigger and due to that they don't fit into the 4x1 space properly anymore. Parts of the images get cut off because they extend outside the widget boundaries.
I had to switch to another skin that uses much smaller icons but I really liked the SimpleSolid skin and will probably explore alternative widget options.
I have both and I prefer HD widgets because I don't have to search for widget themes as you can edit the widgets through the app and HD widgets has switches that I use a lot.

[Q] AOSP Rom with Samsung features?

Is it possible to have an AOSP rom (like CM), but with Smart Stay, IR, Air View, Air Gesture, Driving Mode, S Translate, and the DLNA/media player features? Or at the very least IR, Air View and the media stuff? (I have a Samsung TV)
Most likely no....here's like a .01% chance any of that stuff is gonna work on aosp

All those programs likely require TouchWiz framework
Well, then, what about a ROM with all TW features, but AOSP apps, menus, statusbar and lockscreen? And maybe even Settings app?

I'm coming from an iPhone and don't know much about Android, so I'm wondering if it's easy to just have basic homescreens with a grid of app icons like the iPhone. Looking at Android, I always see a homescreen with a giant clock and weather info. I don't want all that stuff taking up space when the time is already shown in the statusbar, and I usually only need to the check the weather once or twice a day.

That the main aspect of android. Being able to custimize everything. There are a few launchers that look like the iPhone but other then that you will be hard pressed as android devs tend to avoid the iPhone look. There are a few china based things that mimic the iPhone. What you see if just what people have on it. Like I use a small clock and small weather as I remove the clock in the status bar.

This post is misleading. ALL launchers have the ability to look like an iPhone. Just delete all widgets and put only app shortcuts on homescreen. No idea why somebody would want to do that, but a simple task if you do.

Those huge clocks and such are Widgets which, more than anything, are what set Android apart iOS. But, since Android is about choice, yes, you can set up your screen with a grid of app icons just like an iPhone.
Note: I don't think he wants it to LOOK like an iPhone but that is possible.

Look, I know you're coming from the digital prison that is iOS, but you're free now. If you don't want the widgets, delete the widgets. If you want shortcuts for your favorite apps on your homescreens, put shortcuts for your favorite apps on your homescreens. Remember, all your apps are right in your app drawer whenever you need them...

You won't get the exact app to work on aosp but you can have third party software to work in the similar way. Example would be the spen from Galaxy Note series.
As long as the various drivers are available and working in aosp, you can make use of the functions with the help of 3rd party apps. I'm sure many developers are already working on this right now ask we speak because this is a highly popular device.

wow good thread, im a noob coming off of s3's and i wasnt expecting that id loose all those features through a custom rom. i think ill pass. thanks for raising the question i never wouldve known

Any way (MOD?) to increase number of homescreens?

I love the that homescreens are added, removed and moved in touchwiz but wish that we could add a few more of them. Anyone know of a mod or something to change the limit?
Have you tried any of the launchers, like Go Launcher or Nova? Not only can you add more screens, you can increase your grid to like 5x5 (and other choices) so that you might not need as many screens.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I have tried both of those, and a couple of others, on my tablet, but they are not really appealing to my tastes. I know lots of people love them though.
I know there are mods to increase the # homescreens from 7 to 9 in the S3, as well as changed the # icons per screen :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155862
And someone has increased already changed the #icons in the S4 on one carrier (not sure if carrier makes a difference):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272582
So, I am hopeful we can see this on a Sprint S4 soon

Looks like that mod has issues in that it does not play well with TW widgets.
Sounds like you've not tried any of the launchers on your S4 yet. Might want to give one of them a shot. I have used both on my S4. Currently using Nova, but may go back to Go. Go has some nice features, like the home screens rotate. But both work well.
What is it about the launchers you don't like? I've read this in other places and don't understand it, so am curious. I have not been able to see a downside to them so far.

You are right, that mod on the S3 didn't play well with some of the TW widgets. Which is not a big deal for me, but more icons and homescreens is.
What don't I like about Go etc? Well, its sort of like asking me why I like fat, heavy pens while you like skinny, light pens, for example. It just doesn't 'feel' as good to me. I tried using GO for quite a while on my CM10 tablet, and there were definitely some things that I liked. But honestly, its been months since I used it and I can't remember the specifics. I do remember thinking that there were a lot of features but it just didn't feel as good to me as Trebuchet on CM10. Sorry I can't offer a more helpful reply.

[Q] What features / widgets do you lose if you don't use TouchWiz?

I know we lose the TouchWiz calendar widgets, but is there anything else? There are some really sweet launchers on the market and I just want to know what I'm losing if I ditch TouchWiz?
Also, how do you tell how much RAM a launcher uses?
Which launcher is most efficient at using RAM?

Why do you care about RAM?
You got 3 gigs.
Anyway. Nova launcher is pretty light.

Nova & Apex are almost like original android nexus launcher so u will get very good responsibility from launcher.
u won't lose any system features like multi-window, pen windows and etc but launcher features (touch-wiz) u will lose just widgets.
about RAM;
this is galaxy devices problem that cannot manage ram so good. so note3 will be smoother by android KK
:good:
You lose the stock camera, s-note, all the samsung add-on stuff like the widgets, s-voice, all that "S" stuff. There are replacements for most of the sansung stuff for AOSP though, and I seriously don't miss TW at all. I'm also gonna recommend Nova launcher as well.

I think he (she...?) was talking about changing just the laumcher. Not the whole ROM.
You only lose the Samsung widgets.
Spen, Action Menu, Camera and everything else remains fully functional, as do all the gestures and the Samsung apps themselves. (S Note and Calendar do still work fine as an app.)
I'm using Apex. Wonderfully fast. Nova is also good, it's just a matter of preference between the two.
