MDL Scrolling Blur - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I recently updated to MDL from MDC. Now I have this annoying purple blur when I scroll on a dark themed app. This is especially bad because I'm using the Blu Kuban ROM.
It has nothing to do with the ROM because I was seeing the purple blur when I was stock MDL.
I'm wondering if someone knows how to fix this issue? I feel like MDL runs much smoother but the blur is very annoying.

When I scroll it doesnt really blur but the screen darkens a bit
Normal?

Not too sure right off but some have suggested trying this app: Screen Adjuster

Yeah that works great. Just changed the contrast to -15, and left the RGB settings at 0 and now there's no more blur.

Did 1.47.651.1 improve color depth?

Before I updated, I remember noticing the background image in the Gallery application always showed distinct color banding (associated with the 16-bit colors, I would assume). I just applied the update and opened the gallery, and the background doesn't exhibit the same color banding now! I'm wondering... did HTC up the color depth to 24-bits?
In looking for a test image, I came across this website:
www . lagom . nl/lcd-test/gradient.php (sorry can't link yet)
If you view it on your Evo, it shows up as a smooth image (similar to what I see on my desktop)! If you drag the page though, it shows color banding...
So my question is: Did this update bring us up to 24-bit color, or is there some sort of dithering being applied to "spoof" the look of a higher color depth?
I heard jboots got nerfed.
The screen does look better, bandung is gone.
seems pretty doubtful although i was shocked to see that the gradients looked better then my laptop, but when you move it around, the gradients show really bad banding, its probably some dithering trick, it does however look very nice

What is jboots
Dotta love them 65k color. HTC really cheaped out in terms of the display.
I haven't updated yet and I know what you're talking about as I've seen the banding before but just launching the gallery right now doesn't exhibit this behavior. I know I've seen it do that before. Anyone know what steps to take exactly so I can confirm the problem exists before I apply the update?

The camera in low light is definately improved. It's faster on focus and a sharper.
The action once the button is pressed to take the picture is much quicker. So it is an improvement.

Check out the "link" in the OP and see what it looks like before you update. Note especially the behavior/look of the gradient image when you drag the page.
Wonder if improved color depth is why they deleted the "Android" wallpapers with this release. Maybe they were 16-bit color depth.

If it weren't for you guys I wouldn't have noticed it so quickly.
The way I can tell something on the display looks better is when you go to the weather widget. The background isn't as spotty where it faded to a light gray/white color from the darker gray around it. It's MUCH SMOOTHER.
In fact, a week or so ago I noticed how ****ty it looked. Wow looks wayyyyy better now.
Man yall are gonna convince me to unroot and update.. I cant though I need my wifi tether.
There's some kind of funny business going on here... If you go into the camera, and then hit the Gallery button from within there, immediately when the Gallery shows up the background looks crappy and banded again, but once the pictures pop up, it's smooth. If you bounce back into the camera for a few seconds, and then back into the Gallery it'll do the same thing again.
Something is wrong with my dithering.
MOAR DOTS!

Awesome Color Calibrator from the Nexus Forum!

This allows you to adjust the RGB Screen Colors. Check it out. Works on my EVO:

** I claim no credit, just the messenger.
What are your settings?
I only got Force Closes when trying it out...
This has been around forever, I also got Fc's trying to use it.
I have CM6 RC 2, works fine
just was wondering the setting people with EVO's are changing them to
This is built in Cyanogen Mod too.
Settings/user interface/render effect.
Can also be applied as a widget.
It helps a good bit, if you compare non-calibrated and calibrated, without calibration the colors look too washed out and not as dark and deep.

i want dark and deep, what are the settings to get it like that?
Well, this adjusts RBG but it doesn't adjust contrast for blacker blacks or color saturation. Basically what it will do is make your colors either warmer or cooler. Just play with it till you find one you like. If you want a more 3d effect, choose wallpapers in soft focus (or do it yourself using Photoshop) and icons will appear to "float" above the background.

Sorry, I had to. lol. Neat app!
thats pretty cool
I just tried the built in app in CM6.1 and it really gives my EVO a different look. Im using the N1 Low setting.
I find just N1 Calibrated (not cool or red) works best. It really does make a good bit of difference too, try watching a video with it off and it on. The colors feel a bit richer and more natural with the calibration.
I couldn't go back to keeping the default settings anymore
I agree that N1 is best on my EVO. Seems to make the blacks blacker which always makes the screen appear to "pop" more.
However, these are pre-settings. Wit the tweak I mentioned in the OP it is completely customizable. Anyway, whatever works for you.
Posted this in the other thread, but does anyone else get a green hue when scrolling (it's easiest to see in something like the "settings" menu when you scroll).
Any idea if this is correctable?

[Q] Ugly gradients in UI elements and apps

Hello,
I've run BiffMod-HD2 Vanilla Froyo and am currently running MDJ's CyanogenMod 7 Gingerbread on my HD2.
In both instances, UI elements and apps with gradients look low-quality and have step banding.
I think it may be only with PNG files used in backgrounds, buttons, and widgets etc. Anyway, its ugly. Does anybody know why this is and how to fix it?
I took screenshots, but they the gradients look perfectly smooth when I view them on my computer.
I'm having the same issue. It's happened on every ROM I've flashed. Hopefully someone will provide some insight here.
Does anybody know?
Same problem. I think, it happens because HD2 screen is 65k colours only, and Windows Mobile UI is adapted for this mode. But Android was designed for AMOLED screens with millions of colours...

Yes the banding is due to 65K color limitation to the HD2 screen. I guess the banding disappears while using the Launcher Pro.

Is it hardware or software limitation? Any way to unlock another color modes?
It is not hardware limitations. There is already another thread with a ton of info. If you want banding to go away, use LauncherPro WITHOUT a live wallpaper until a permanent fix is implemented.

Thanks. I didn't think it was because of the screen's color limitations. If so you would see banding in JPGs and video. The banding only seems to appear on PNG files, which happen to be used in most graphical UI elements.

Just tried Launcher Pro and I still have the same problem. I used to use Launcher Pro on BiffMod Froyo and the same thing. The problem presists with 2.2 Launcher, 2.3 Launcher, Zeam, ADW, and Launcher Pro.
And its not only in Widgets. It can be seen in most UI buttons, the call screen, and most predominantly in the voice command pop up. That thing looks like a coin would shoot out if Mario hit it with his fist.

The banding remains elsewhere, but using launcherpro, the banding disappears on the widgets and wallpaper. AGAIN YOU CAN NOT USE A LIVE WALLPAPER with launcerpro or else banding will appear. Then under advanced settings, select high quality scrolling so you dont see banding while scrolling.
I'm using LauncherPro with PureGingerbread this works for me.

I don't use live wallpapers. Still doesn't work for me. Oh well. Using Launcher Pro is really just. Bandaid anyway. The root of the problem is still unknown, at least to me and most people here.

Get rid of TouchWiz update?

How can I get back to before I updated this morning my galaxy tab 10.1? I hate the new white all over and want to go back.
No way back.... Besides installing CWM and flashing back to a previous version of 3.1... I don't care so much about the color but really enjoying the smooth homescreen.

Well, I hate the white swype and don't like the new color scheme, too white. I also don't notice any difference in speed. Don't like www browser color too. Too white or bright.

I do agree about Swype. I know Samsung is going for a unified look, but the dark one is far more slick.
Who cares for swype! It is for smart phones, I use Thumbkeyboard and I am loving it.

i'm not sure, but the swype beta was/is free, so you could uninstall swype and load that beta if its still out there
edit: check this link out
Thanks for the input. Is the beta swype darker like the default android keyboard?
I'm going to keep everything and hope there's a 3.2 update sometime. If I get too annoyed I might consider rooting it for the stock rom.

Don't count on any 3.2 update removing the TouchWiz.
SwiftKey X is better anyway.
Also, dude, chill out with the HELLLO???? stuff. No one here has to answer anything.

If you just got it new retail then it probably shipped with TouchWiz. Does your menu bar look like this or like the stock Honeycomb?
Smoother? my tab seems laggier if anything when moving through homescreens. I do have 3-4 widgets over all if that makes a difference, and picture frames.
1st one, got it, it means i already have touchwiz
it lags like **** though, not comparable with my phone's smoothness =(
i still can't the the info about sgt10.1 getting android 3.2, i've heard that it fixes most of the lags, does anybody know anything concerning the ETA?
Yeah. Laggy a bit.3. 2?

Is there any way to darken the lollipop UI to take advantage of the amoled screen?

I have been searching and searching but I cannot find a straight answer for non-aosp TouchWiz phones. Ever since I began using my girlfriend's phone on lollipop I have been blinded by the new "Material Design" whiteness of it. I can hear it sucking down the battery as I use the phone. This seems to be accurate as the battery life on my girlfriends phone on 5.0 BOK3 is much worse than my 4.4.4 NK2 S5. I really want to switch her phone to Dark Holo (I believe that is the name of the kitkat theme) but I cannot figure out how. I have already switched her to Textra for SMS with a dark theme and set her lock screen and home background to black but when she pops the samsung keyboard the white is almost blinding. Does anyone have any advice? Her phone is rooted and xposed is installed. Thanks in advance.

Other than custom roms with a theme on them no, there's nothing that I know of, if you find something let me know cause I'm interested in this as well. So far I took a theme from another s5 ROM and 'ported it' to mine, kind of an involved process.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why they decided to go with a blinding white theme, negating one of the biggest advantages of the expensive SAMOLED. /:
Seems like quite a waste.

So far I have as a kind-of-solution: Using Textra with Google Keyboard set to Dark. It's my girlfriend's phone so I can only try stuff if I can pry it out of her texting hands haha.

Amoled screens use no power to display black, so the advantage is that a systemwide dark theme improves battery life.

This may be of interest, but its only select system apps.
