I believe goo.im (goomanager) have connection problems atm.
If that happens goomanager can go a little crazy with the updates.

Yeah, goomanager is telling there's a new version of the ROM your running, you can download the new version (look for it in the forum) and then install it (flash it) via recovery, or keep your old one. I personally like stock, don't like custom ROMs on nexus devices.

Yep: Paranoid android = ROM and CWM/clockwordmod = recovery
And yes, you download and flash roms to install new ones.

Nope. Reboot into recovery, install .zip from SD card, find the downloaded ROM zip you want to flash, wipe cache/dalvik cache and reboot. None of your data should be lost

But play store, google backup transport and other google apps are to be flashed saperately in order for play store to work. And the contacts sync and other stuff can only be got by flashing gaps.

Goo.im manager is the software that can be used by developers to provide ota updates to users of their custom roms. It sometimes goes mad and asks to update rom. It could be some data problem. Just erase the app data and restart app. This works most of times.

WELCOME to android!
just remember this.
flashing for update:: clear cache/dalvik cache, flash update, flash Gapps,
flashing new rom, factory reset, flash rom, flash Gapps, clear cache/dalvik. reboot, restore apps using Titanium Backup

I rooted my phone today, then installed Rom Manager. Using Rom Manager I tried to install Cyanogen Mod 7 RC 1. It seemed to install fine, but when it starts up it goes to the Cyanogen Mod 7 splash screen and loads for a few seconds, then restarts(not the phone, it just replays the splash screen). I backed up my previous Rom, but I don't know how to restore it. Can someone help me get CM7 working or tell me how to restore my previous rom.
EDIT: I got the standard rom recovered, so I don't really have to worry about that part anymore? But how could I get CM 7 to work if I wanted to re flash it?
Do a nandroid backup through ROM manager first off if you haven't already.
Did you do a full data/cache/dalvik cache wipe before you flashed CM7RC1?
Did you flash Gapps at the same time as the ROM?
btw the RC2 has been out for a while.
Er...no. How do I do wipe the cache data? Also, I don't even know what Gapps is. I'm quite ignorant on the subject of roms.

It really is good to do this through recovery, although if you're not comfortable with general use of recovery, I think if you flash the CM7 zip through ROM manager you can check the box for "wipe data + cache".
Gapps is "Google Apps" aka market etc. etc.. These aren't included in the ROM, and I bet you'd like to have them . The link for the latest Gapps is in the CM7 ROM thread in the dev section. Haven't used ROM manager to flash in a long time (I do it through recovery manually) but I think you can check the box to install Gapps at the same time too if you don't wanna do it manually.
Yeah, I chose to install Google Apps. But are you saying if I download the zip file for CM7 like on my pc, then transfer it to my sdcard then fflash it that way, then I should be able to wipe the cache?

And data. it is extremely paramount (imho) that you wipe all of your data/cache/dalvik before flashing to ensure you get a good quality install.
Also, make sure you have the latest CWM recovery installed via ROM manager (assuming that you do already). Its 3.0.0.5 .
Like I said ROM manager can do this, but for nightlies/RC I just do it through recovery and make sure it gets done right.
I'm a noob at the whole flashing ROMs and the business that goes with it, so go easy on me.
So.. I'm flashing a ROM for the very first time, AOKP. I've already installed it, I installed GApps from Androidroothelp.com and when installing, it came up with 'Google Apps for Android 4.1.1 2012-07-26.
I want to know if it would be possible to replace the 4.1.1 Google Apps with 4.2.2. I haven't moved from the CWM recovery screen after install.
Would I have to factory reset to install the GApps for 4.2.2??
Thank You!
Dirty flash your rom(flash without wiping anything ) and then flash 4.2.2 gapps. That should fix it.

1. you can update most the gapps in the play market.
2. you can boot up, download a different gapps pack(4.2.2), then go back into recovery and flash it.

How would I go about doing that? Should I reboot the phone, go back to CWM recovery, download the 4.2.2 gapps, do the process like I did before??
After rebooting, it says 'Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped' and I hit OK and it said 'Unfortunately, Setup Wizard has stopped'
What do I do?! :crying:

download a new gapps on your phone if you can, then go to recovery and flash it. or download it via your computer, then move the to your phone via the recovery and adb. or, if you made a nandroid backup, restore it. then boot up and download the right gapps, then flash your rom and gapps again.

I have CWM as my recovery and PA on the device.
I got a message today saying a new PA is out and grabbed the zip from goo manager.
Now I understand with goo manager you need a openscript recovery to use that to update though it appears CWM recovery doesn't use that but TWP does.
In CM10 you go to the settings and update from the OTA section in the about tab.
PA doesn't use those OTA updates it seems when CM does.
I would still be using CM but was getting a lot of crashes on M3 so I decided to try a few roms and currently running PA.
So what's the best way to update can I just flash the rom over the top of the current system without formatting first?
Thanks

Move the zip containing the update to /sdcard (your root documents directory, where all your files are stored- ANdroid, Data, DCIM, Downloads, etc), reboot to CWM, flash zip, select zip and go. That should be all you have to do. :good:
It worked fine for me using CWM and the usual method to update (recovery->install zip->select from SD). The only problem I'm having is a DPI issue in the launcher. Make sure to install the newest gapps as well and clear the cache.

Hey XDA,
I'm tempted to install a kernel on my Nexus 4. This is the first time doing a Kernel (already have the nexus 5 rom) but what I was wondering is:
How will I get the stock kernel (3.1.0 if im right?) back on the phone when I want to undo things?
Is it as simple as doing a stock recovery or something else. From what I think recovery is only for the OS and not kernel?
You just dirty flash your current rom. (flash it, then wipe cache and dalvik)

its pointless wiping dalvik and cache, as they get wiped when you flash the rom. also, if just flashing a kernel, wiping dalvik and cache have nothing to do with it, so no need to wipe.

Yes. Go into recovery (clockworkmod), and simply flash the rom. Like simms22 said, wiping cache and dalvik isnt necessary, but it wont hurt anyone
Franco packages his kernel as a boot.img (which is installed using fastboot) and as a zip (which is flashable via recovery). Pick the one that you want and install it using the appropriate method.

whenever you flash any rom, it removes the custom kernel, replaces it with the one from the rom(until you flash it again).

So just to make sure I understand. When I go into clockwork and whip the phone etc etc it will also whip the custom ROM AND custom Kernel.
So when it boots back into stock android again it also has the original kernel that the nexus 4 was running on?

So i finally rooted and went into twrp. This is the first rom im installing. Ive done this whole root thing for a little over 4 years now.
I went to do a wipe, system, cache, dav....and its been stuck on "factory reset" for 10 mins now what do i do. did i do something wrong?
formatting cache using make_ext4s function" is what its saying
the phone shut of and i thought it was done for. It did reboot but nothing was wiped. am i doing something wrong here?
normally you just go into the twrp, slide to wipe everything, install rom, gapps, wipe cache and dav and reboot.

If you want to flash 4.4. Try the philz cwm recovery link...its a zip so just flash and reboot recovery....there's a unofficial 2.6.3.4 in android development section but no longer supported......I would choose philz over 2.6.3.4 IMO only....and thanks for all the thanks!!!! Just saw them
