Hello Nexus 4 users.
I just noticed this counter in my default Messaging client. It changes from time to time when I receive or send text messages. Am I missing some knowledge?

Thank you!
It's the unread message count.

That is the number of unread messages.
In your screenshot there are two unread messages so the counter shows 2

Yeah I thought that as well. But the unread messages keep being unread. If I press them and go back, it still counts as an unread one. Not sure if I'm doing some monkey business?

My guess is that you're doing it way too fast. Try to stay at message for a while, 'read' it and then it should mark it read.
Thanks for the answers! Turns out I'm kinda stupid . I thought that the conversations with a grey look were unread, and the white ones were read. I had a few white ones in the buttom, so I pressed them and now it's working as intended. I hope I gave you a great laugh!
Thank you for the input anyway.

is anyone can tell me what it is and how to cancel it (the below one)?
it is not missing call, not new message or email.

It looks like you have some kind of non-standard theme running there, perhaps uninstalling that would help? I don't have that voicemail lock on my HD2...even when I have a voicemail. I do get one for text messages though...

Hi all,
Today my friend bought a used white colored Xperia x10.His earlier phone was Nokia 5800.He doesn't like the android sms management system which shows message between users like chat conversation. He wants inbox/outbox display system. Is there any software for this.
Get him to download a third party SMS app like Handcent or Go SMS through the market. I'm not 100% sure if either of these can be setup the way he wants but they will both give him a lot more options to play around with in setting his SMS' up.
This type of messaging is called 'threaded view', and it is considered far superior..
What exactly is your friends problem..?

Could you point out how to get to that screen as I'm not seeing it. Thanks

Thanks! I'm still learning stuff lol
I just lol'd pretty hard from the last couple if posts in this thread
There is no way to get it to display just the name of the person messaging you without also previewing the message is there?
Is there any way of turning it off completely? I don't want a crappy looking banner.

Look for 'Preview Message' under the Notification Settings in the Messaging Settings menu.

No, that just allows it to display the first few words of the message if it's enabled. Even with that disabled the big banner still appears on the lockscreen stating I've got a new message. I want to stop it appearing at all.

Once in the Message app: SETTINGS -> Notification settings -> Notifications (uncheck)
This is just a guess though... I haven't received a text message yet to verify, haha. But it's worth a shot.
That'll stop you getting ANY notification at all though, no message tone, no unread count, etc. I still want that to work, I just want to stop it coming up on the lockscreen too!
This screenshot shows what I'm wanting to disable. I just want to stop this ugly banner appearing in place of my regular widget on the lockscreen when I get a text.

Hi guys!
I'm probably not the first one who thought about that, but I cannot find much about it here on xda and I'm curious why it hasn't already be done:
Wouldn't it be possible for devs to include an option to swipe notifications left to mark as read and right to delete (with an "undo" option popping up) in a similar way to the Gmail app? I don't know if this would work system-wide (say, for third-party apps like Whatsapp), but it should at least be possible for SMS and maybe the pre-installed exchange email app.
I think an option like this right inside the notification slide would come very handy for generic SMS no one ever reads like for example provider messages and the like.
What do you think?

}
Although that would be useful, I don't think the swipe gesture returns any value to the application. Swipe just gets rid of the notification. The app wouldn't know if it was swiped left or right!
Besides if there are multiple notifications from same app won't all the messages get deleted then?

Hm I don't know much about developing, but if you were to mark it as read, won't the app need more permissions?
I mean in this case THE APP, say gmail, is going to your mailbox and marking the item as read and then returning that "read" value to the gmail servers, instead of your PHONE just avoiding the notification.
Then again I could be completely wrong here. I really don't know
You could also use a third party app : NotifierPro.
by desactivating the notifications from the sms app, and NP pops a banner that you can swipe left/right, to launch/read/dismiss. You can customize that.
But I guess that it would be nice too, to have it directly in the notification panel.
