My S4's camera app gets stuck at 10-15cm focus and won't focus.
Ending processes does not help, restart does not help, but powering off and starting up resolves it.
Everything is standard with the latest updates.
The problem is that it occurred frequently, I could recreate it within 5 minutes.
But then I did a reset to factory defaults because this is what will happen when I return the phone for testing?
Then after installing a few (non-camera) apps, it happened twice over a weekend.
So currently I am trying to recreate the problem after uninstalling a talking tom cat app... if it does happen then I have to factory reset and try to recreate it.
If it takes days to recreate, how can i return it?
And if it is software-related, is that acceptable?

Did you find a solution for this? Mine is doing the same thing. It focuses about a foot from the phone and nothing I do will change it. I don't even get it temporarily working with a reboot.
Hm actually I stopped using the Samsung vanilla cam app the first week I've got the phone for pretty much the same reason. I'm using camera FV5 instead and that allows me to even take very nice macros.

So yesterday I accidentally dropped my phone in milk. I picked got my phone out of it almost immediately, and dried it off. I didn't really think much of it, because everything was still working properly. Today, I tried to use my camera, but when I hit the camera button, the camera app FC'd. I reopened it and I got an error saying "Can't connect to camera". I thought maybe something happened in the ROM, so I restored a backup from about 2 weeks ago, and I got the same message.
Currently, I've got the phone in rice, just in case. Is it possible that the milk is what is causing this? If so, is there any chance that I can fix the camera without sending it in? (I don't have insurance)
The only thing that's keeping me from thinking that the milk is what's causing this, is the fact that everything else is working normally on the phone. I've called people, texted, games, everything is working fine, but the camera.
I'm running Zips most recent build, and my backup was IceColdSandwich. In a few hours when I take my phone out, I'll try a GB rom, but for now, does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Yea, MOST of the time, but NOT always, you can go into the phones settings, then into Applications, select the 'All' tab, and find the Camera on the list. Clear the cache, also clear data...that usually works. If not, maybe fix permissions? I always try those methods. But I don't care for ICS so I don't know if its the same as 3.5.....but try that.

Haha so am I. Thanks for the help though, I appreciate it.
Ya it definitely sounds like you nuked a critical component of the camera. Definitely lucky it didn't fry any of the other parts. If you've tried doing a factory reset and completely wiping your disks, don't think there's anything else you can do other than sending it in or attempting to fix it yourself which would require quite a bit of skill and probably some soldering expertise.
I'm using the same rom as you and the same thing happened to me at one point. I managed to fix it though by clearing camera cache, disabling and re-enabling it, and then clearing the dalvik cache and fixing permissions just for kicks. One or all of those things fixed it for me. Try that maybe?

Alright. I'll try it haha. I've been given new hope because the flashlight is working now, so I'm hoping the camera might start working again.
One question though, what do you mean by disabling it and re-enabling it?
When you go to clear the app cache you'll see a button next to the force stop option that says disable. From my understanding its basically like turning off the drivers for the camera. When you re-enable it (same button btw) you reactivate the drivers and it will communicate with the camera again hopefully.
If I'm wrong about any of that someone can correct me. But it still worked to fix my problem anyways

Alright, I'll try to find that. The website that I'm ordering the camera from apparently sends step by step instructions.
I guess that's one thing I enjoy about iPhones. They come apart and can be repaired very easily haha
Hope?
Okay, so I randomly tried opening the camera again today, and to my surprise, the app didn't force close or give me the message saying it couldn't connect. Nothing was appearing though, so I didn't think much of it. Then I remembered in Zips build you had to turn force preview on, so I did. Nothing happened, but I tried to take a picture, and the screen turned green with a weird little brownish area in the middle.
I'll upload a picture of it later if anyone wants and thinks maybe they can help me figure it out a little more.
The fact that it's working all of the sudden makes me think it might just randomly go back to normal. However, it might not.
But the fact that the camera is actually turning on now, that means that if anythings broken, its the camera itself, right? Not the hardware around it?
Hmm, upload a picture. My camera started taking those glitchy looking photos before it died on me. If you hadn't mentioned the green and brown detail I would have forgotten.
I'm not saying I can give any more suggestions than I already did but if you're getting the same problem I had then maybe you can categorize this back in the realm of software issues. Better than a hardware failure at least...

So, the MyTouch 4G has shown several camera issues; from a black screen to FCing when opening the app. It seemed to be like an update issue to the newest GB but even stock phones that hadn't been updated were also having issues. If anyone has anymore info on this subject please reply here or PM me. I am very interested in this issue as I have a coworker witht the same problem. It has also been shown to reoccur after people think they have "fixed" it with a factory reset or such.
[APP] Quick-Fix for "Cannot Connect to Camera" error for Epinters CM10/CM10.1
I know this should go in Atrix development, but I am relatively new to the community and cannot post in the development section yet.
I have been frustrated by the camera connectivity issue that has been affecting Epinters CM10 ROM. Luckily, Epinter posted an easy solution to fix this without rebooting the device.. Looks like this works Epinters CM10.1 ROM based on comments in that thread (I have not tested it).
I decided that it would be a good idea to wrap this in a simple app that would allow a one-click fix!
This app requires root in order to kill the mediaserver process.
To Use:
1) Install
2) Open "Atrix Camera Fix"
3) Click "Run Fix!"
4) Grant Superuser permission
5) DONE!
If there is interest, I could create a one-click widget to do this as well.

Edit (Dec 11): Fixed typo. Thanks saldirai for letting me know!
Edit (Jan 1): Added changelog and updated apk

Edit (Apr 12): Reports of working with CM 10.1/10.2 i9300 (International Galaxy S3) & CM11 sprint galaxy s3
This would have been a nice addition few months back, but I personally haven't run into this issue since the early CM10 builds. Maybe because I started using Camera FX, but camera always works and is never laggy like before. Still thanks for your work, I'm sure it will definitely help someone.

I still see this issue when using the stock camera, mostly after opening the camera multiple times in a relatively short period (~15 minutes) from the lock screen. I imagine that I can't be the only one seeing this. If this helps just one person, i'm happy!
Haven't used the stock camera in a long while, I remember it being annoying to restart. I'm sure there are going to be people who will enjoy this.
Try camera360 from the play store. It's free and has lots of options. It doesn't crash either...

What version of Epinters ROM are you running?
Please ensure that you have granted Superuser permission?
My solution is to use tasker to run the shell command: kill -9 `pidof mediaserver`
On every screen wake. So every time I turn screen off and back on the cam is good to go.

My app does exactly that and adds the ability to kill Gallery, as it sometimes hangs when the camera stops working. Essentially the same solution with different implementation
Yeah I was pretty sure it did. I just wanted something a little more silent and automated. Useful regardless. Hopefully the new kernel devs will fix the problem with cameras entirely.
Note: although on the new alpha kernel the cam always connected for me, I still had problems where I would get "static" artifacts on the bottom of images. Running this fix solves that issue as well.

Hi guys,
I have been a silent follower but now I really need your help to get out of this mess.
Bought an s5 SM G900H on 23rd apr(India), since the very first day noticed a strange issue that when listening to songs for a long time, say an hour at a stretch the music app just crashes and then when I check my running applications all of them show restarting without actually restarting the services.
After this the phones response becomes pathetic and every app crashes the moment I start them. I have to reboot the device to get it working again. What seems to be the issue?
Only happening when I listen to music for quite some time.It seems the phone is just not able to free enough ram as ram usage peaks and no amount of killing all apps frees any ram.
Should I not get a replacement phone? Samsung svc people were telling me they'll update the software and then see, but then my DOA period would be over. I am regretting my decision to buy the phone.
Help guys!
Ps: Checked with kies and on sammobile, I am already running on the latest build. G900HXXU1ANCI

hi buddy! im glad i am not the only one xD I thought i had a defective device.
and for g900H, it is the international model of exynos chipset. g900F is the international model of snapdragon 801.
I thought this was a hardware issue. I hope they can do something about this. Samsung plz
Have you also seen a rare issue that your power button stops working? like if the button doesnt work. I think this may have been a problem related to greenify without root. Im scared to try it again so, if anything happens, you guys should know. xD uninstall greenify and restart.

Hi Mate,
The thing that surprises me is how an issue or a bug like this escaped the samsung testing team.
The power button at times becomes unresponsive if the services are stuck at restarting. Not just that the whole phone starts acting weird, my finger print scanner won't work intermittently and every app crashing, the homescreen resetting etc. I spoke to Samsung Head Office here in India and they asked me to send a detailed mail about the issue. I have done that. Now the best we can do is wait for them to release a fix.

Reboot once and then use google play music app for your music. No issues whatsoever. I have in fact hidden the samsung music app.

Search for it in Google, it doesn't appear in the Play Store in search but the link does work.

Yeap, thanks, I just downloaded it and looks like it crashed but lets see what happens if I listen to music for 1+ hour- I will report back.
Interesting, same use case in a G900H:
If wouldn’t be a Samsung phone without the occasional crashes and sadly, the S5 is no stranger to this. Despite being on KitKat 4.4.2, the S5 will lag intermittently and at times crawl to a halt, forcing you to restart the phone. We noticed this couple of times when listening to music. The song would just pause itself and OS would simply stop responding.
