Torch Light - Volume Up - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI All,
I have posted this question in another forum, but it does not seem anyone knew what I was talking about and I think the question belongs here anyway.
If you use a 3rd party launcher or a shortcut app and go into Activities, you will find the Torch Light settings under Settings>Torch Light.
I created a shortcut to it and it allows to set up VolUp long press to use the LED as a torch. This worked on the leaked S3 4.2.2 ROM, but on S4 it does not seem to do anything.
Has anyone tried setting up a shortcut key to enable torch light?
Thanks in advance,
Szadzik

Works on XXUABME

Works on mine.. I'm using STOCK S4 (Sprint) + Root with Nova Prime.
Here's what I did..
(Long Press) Desktop
Shortcuts
Activities
Settings
(Long Press) TorchLight Activity
Enable the shortcut and set an appropriate timeout.
And Volume Down turns it off..
Hope that helps!

Mate,
You just repeated what I said in my post. This did not work on earlier s4 firmwares and works fine now, I was the one who found this trick.

It's working fine in my I9500 UBUBMG9
Thanks for the tip. :highfive:

Which Torch app
I see there are several Torch Light apps. Which one are you guys using?
Thanks

It's a built in app, you don't need to download any third party app to avail the above mentioned feature. Oh wait, you do need a third party app, rather you should, because if you use the above procedure then you will have a half bright LED flashlight than any third party apps, which offers the flash to glow at max brightness.

How do you create shortcut?

Echoe Rom
I had this feature with the Echoe Rom!:good:

Works here on MKE 4.3 firmware. But it somehow doesn't work when the screen is off long time. Can only turn it on by lighting the screen up, then turn it off again then I can light the flash LED on...

Using an app called Torchie, just press both 'volume buttons' together to turn on/off torch anytime. It runs as a background service and just works anytime, even when screen off (if enabled from Torchie Settings). It kinda make your phone feel like a conventional battery operated torch.

AnyUnlock: An app to treat N1's power button problem (no root required)

Before developoing this app, I am using
1. Nolock
2. Flyscreen
3. lock widget
in order to
1. use any key to turn the phone on
2. use widget to turn off the phone
3. Use flyscreen to prevent the accident tap
However this combination is huge and invenient. So I deciced to develop a very small app (40k in size) it can
1. Use any key to turn on the phone
2. A widget turn phone off
3. A very simple lock screen to prevent accident tap.
Search AnyUnlock in Android Market and enjoy it. If there are any porblems, please report.
i like it!
perhaps you should include an option to enable or disable the 'lock screen to prevent the accidental tap.'

Yes, I will do that in next version.
It didn't work for my N1. I enabled the app, brought me to the 2nd window where I also enabled it and let the phone shut down and nothing, I had to use the power button to turn the screen back on. Back to nolock.
It was the way I installed it, working now but after installing gingerbread the trackball wake no longer wakes the screen, have to use the volume key. Still very effective but like the trackball wake.

Yes, there is a bug. If you don't allow the admin permission in the first time. The program will fail. You can disable it, uninstall it and reinstall to take effect.
I also couldn't pick up on an incoming call... it just went to the screen which shows the enable/disable anylock buttons. I couldn't press home or back. Uninstalled it for now.

I have updated to 1.2 with the option to disable simple lock screen. Also I tried to fix your phone call issue. Hopefully it is working.
OK 1.3 released with fixes to some non-n1 devices.
Works fantastic. After enabling the app I went back into settings and unchecked the lock screen. Now it works just the way I wanted. Thanks for the great app.

You can have a try. The power button is quite vunerable for HTC devices. I hope Android would make an official option to power on the device using any keys.
works brilliantly now! thanks.
maybe you should put in the description in the market that no root is required.
and an option to still use the slider when unlocking? that would be my favorite option.
just pressing the track ball brings you to the unlocking screen with the slider.
This is super awesome, thanks for making this!
Curious, what specific activity does the widget call? I would like to be able to shut the screen off using other things (dock swipe up, tasker, custom widget) etc. is it an android acitivity or one that is specific to AnyUnlock?
I tried each of the 4 or 5 activities in AnyUnlock but they didn't work.
Thanks for making this!

Just updated to Gingerbread on N1 and the trackball doesn't wake anymore, but volume button still works.
I can also confirm the trackball doesn't work to wake the screen up, but the volume buttons still do.
Hopefully the trackball wake issue will be resolved for gingerbread.

Yup, I noticed this also with other apps that disable the lockscreen (like Switchpro)
That's too bad.
No Lock too from what another user has stated. There's no way i'm changing from CM7 if there's no possibility of trackball wake!
Does this app just Wake the N1 or does it power ON a device which is powered off ?
I can already wake via the trackball using CM6 , but I need something which will Power it ON as my power button is broken.

Got nexus 4. Few questions

I bought my nexus 4 yesterday. I rooted it and now after 2 days using it I have some questions:
1. Is it possibile to personalize the notifications center by adding buttons. I miss so much the silent mode switch button from my galaxy s 2 with android 4.1.2
2. Is it possible to automatically search for contacts from the phone screen typing the letters of the contact we are searching for. In nexus 4 you can search for contacts only by the search screen
3. It seems that the only way to make lock screen appear is by pressing the lock phisic button. Is there an althernative method?
thank you guys
1. Download POWER TOGGLES from play store and you can have Data, Wifi, BT, Screen rotation, Torch, Volume changer to hi-lo etc.
2. Not exactly that but you cn download exDialer and search contact by clicking alphabets which are on numeric keys.
3. I NEVER use power button to turn screen on and off. Rather I use Screen ON & OFF app from play store.
And I am not rooted.

1. Many customs roms allow this. I recommend cyanogenmod or paranoidandroid (link in sig).
2. You can do this from the built in contacts/People app.
3. Touch Control: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.paranoid.touchcontrol

Thank you very much guys. filthykid, I can't find Screen ON & OFF app in the play store. I just found some apps that lock the screen. For unlocking I think is required root and touch control, isn't it?
I'm on CM 10.1 and it has the feature you are looking for.

The touch control features are not ROM related. You will need a compatible kernel. The touch control app offers you a stock kernel with module support to enable the slide2wake features. Or you can flash another custom kernel like francokernel or trinity, they also support touch control. The stock CM10.1 kernel does not support touch control.

can u tell us a app that doesn't use proximity sensor for locking and unlocking phone and DOES NOT require root. In short app that have features like tap to wake, slide to wake but without needing root?
To avoid using power button for screen off (I Hate using power button) there are couple of options.
1. Touch control - But I think requires root and specific kernel
2. Lots of apps which give shortcut on screen to sleep
3. I dont know about stock but some ROM provides go to sleep option in toggle shortcut
4. There are apps (Intellicover, tap tap app, smart screen off, smart cover) which uses proximity sensor to do that. Either Tap or hide etc in option to do that.
Recently I bout flip cover for my N4 and using smart cover app which works great. Wakes up and sleep with cover open and close. I removed lock screen too.

I use the app attached in the SC. It has tap to wake or wave.. BUT that too on proximity sensor. But trust me it works absolutely perfect. Been using it since Jan 2013.

There was one of this name.. I used it initially but it didn't work so I deleted it. Then I started using Screen OFF and Lock (Donate). However you can use its free version Here.
And for waking up the phone without using Power button, I use Smart Screen ON.
Screenshots attached for reference. I am also attaching an extra SC to show Power Toggles.
Hit Thanks, if this helped ppl
Hi guys. I tried the "non rooted" version using Smart Screen ON for waking up and "the rooted" version with Touch Control. I can conclude Touch Control is a way better because Smart Screen ON makes the phone wake up and unlock when it is in the poket. How is you experience?

It's also an action in Tasker.
What I do, is use Nova Prime launcher. You need the paid prime to enable double tap options. Point the double tap option to the screen off app.
Then whenever you double tap in the launcher, the device turns off, just like Stock.
Thanks a bunch, most apps for this had bad reviews related to spamming ads. That's why I wanted to check what you guys would suggest.
I thought it would be as easy as just creating a small app myself with a single line of code.
Player911 I actually wanted to get a button so when there is no room on home screen to tap I would use the button instead. I wish we could replace the quick shortcuts in LG G2 that show up with swipe from bottom, add sleep option or turn off screen option.

How To: Use Tasker to assign flashlight toggle to Active Key on S7 Active

Quick how to for any other S7 Active owners who like me were disappointed that the Active Key could not be used as a dedicated flashlight button.
I used the Tasker app with the free App Factory plugin to create an app that toggles the flashlight state.
1. Open Tasker and create a new task (I called mine Flashlight Toggle)
2. Click the Add action button (the + at the bottom) and the Select Action Category window will pop up
3. Type Torch into the filter at the bottom of the Select Action Category window
4. In the Action Edit screen select Toggle from the dropdown in Set
5. Press back to return to the Task Edit screen
6. In the lower right press and hold the icon button and assign the task an icon
7. Press back to return to main Tasker screen - press and hold on the Flashlight Toggle task (or whatever you called it) task to highlight it
8. Select Export from the menu button in the upper right and export as an app.
8a. You may need to install the apk you just created manually depending on permssion settings with tasker (thanks for heads up 78c10)
9. Now open Settings and Navigate to the Active Key settings
10. You should have an app named Flashlight Toggle that you can now assign to the Active Key
Congratulations, you now have a dedicated flashlight button on your S7 Active.
I don't mean to sound critical, so please forgive me, but wouldn't it have been easier to download a flashlight app, and set it to the button?
I personally can't believe you didn't get more feedback on this. What a beautiful, elegant solution.
I was shocked to find that there was no option available to bind a long press of the action key to flashlight, how stupid. You fixed it, and you fixed it in a beautiful way! Thanks.
@Chr0nos77 I had done this previously, but was plagued with either apps that would then open and not turn off the torch by holding it, or having ads emblazoned across my device.
Smooth solution. The only thing that differed from the instructions is that after I exported the app, I had to install it before I could use it. So, I guess don't miss out on that step.
For some reason, I had to factory reset my phone to get the app factory to install. Oh well.
Only problem I'm having with this is that even though I have the app in my whitelist, if the phone is in deep doze the button does not reliably launch the flashlight. Have to press unlock button first then the active key. Still good but would be good if I could somehow force it to work with aggressive doze.
Is there a way to set the flashlight to full brightness? When you turn on the flashlight in the notification panel, it's only set to 30% of it's brightness, but when you open the Activity Zone, you can turn it all the way up to 100%, is there some way to make the 100% setting standard?

I'm not sure in 5.0.1 - I used this with my S7A which was Android 6 out of the box.
gotta say.. works VERY well
Thank you for this, I've been looking for a way to be able to skip tracks with the active key and found a way to do it using the same logic you described here (made an app for next track and on for previous). If anyone is interested let me know and I'll put instructions for how I did it.

Finally, success!
I read another command in the posts, that did the job!
Just put that command in the adb shell:

Navigation Buttons Mod?

Call me a bit old fashioned, but I have a specific set of "keybinds" that I always work to achieve one way or another on my android devices.
The "Menu" button of old is more important to me than a "Recents" button - really just hoping to achieve inverted behavior of the square button: short press for menu, long press for recents.
Long pressing the "Back" button should kill the foreground app.
Any other bind to quickly toggle the torch light.
Using the menus in OxygenOS, I can't seem to achieve this. Any suggestions or secrets I've yet to find out about?
In Oxygen os you can set LONG PRESS RECENT BUTTON to perform MENU Action. I use it all the time.
About long press back button to kill app, I think this feature was removed in PIE.
Me too was looking for it but didn't find a solution.
Anyway I quickly realized that I don't need it. Op6t can keep a lot of app in memory so there's no need to kill.
When i want to kill one or all i use Recents.
Not a big deal for me.
Yep that's how I'm using everything now. It gets the job done, though I find myself reverting to old habits absent-mindedly. I'm sure I'll be perfectly adapted in a matter of days.

I don't think the permissions are the problem. The app doesn't complain about that, it just doesn't do anything to the nav bar during setup, and according to the app that's indicative of incompatibility.
