I have attempted to root my NST with Glowlight using thishttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706. I used dd to write the image to my SD card. The install file automatically decompressed, so I decompressed it. I copied it onto the root of the SD card. I followed the instructions to get it to install, and every time I try it just says "installing update... Instillation aborted". Any thoughts? Thanks.
Looks like I fixed that issue. I downloaded it using Firefox instead of Safari and saves the zip without automatically decompressing and used that, which worked.

Earlier I tried to root my G1 by flashing the RC29 dreaimg.nbh file onto it. When I copied the file to the microSD card and flashed it onto the bootloader, I didn't realize that the file wasn't finished downloading in chrome when I copied it to the microSD card. So I flashed that file on there and that obviously failed. I realized that the file never finished downloading and I restarted the download to be sure I didn't copy a bad file onto the microSD card again. When that was done I re-formatted the card to FAT-32 and copied the dreaimg.nbh file onto it.
Now whenever I plug the microSD card back into the phone and try to flash the image, it briefly goes to a white screen and says "No image found", even though the file's in the root directory and the card's been freshly formatted. I've tried to remedy this by restoring the phone to factory settings using a hard reset, but that always brings me back to the bootloader screen. I've exhausted all options I can find with no luck and I'm becoming extremely frustrated with my phone. Can anyone help with this?
This question may have been answered before but I just cant find it here.
I tried rooting my vibrant with the classic method described here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723479&highlight=issues+rooting+vibrant
It didn’t work and I got the following message:
E: can’t open /sd card/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted
I copied the update.zip file in DCIM of internal memory card and was still getting the same message.
I copied the update.zip file into my sd card and still got the same message.
I followed the steps exactly as they have been described in the rooting thread.
I haven't tried the one click root method yet.
Would anyone know what seems to be the problem.
Thanks.
You have to replace the update.zip file and flash it with recovery.

Are you saying I have to replace with a new update.zip file and repeat the method again?
I was doing it in recovery mode.
Use the one click method. You can find all the info on unlockr.com in the--how to -- (they have a nice video) If it doesn't work then you will need to flash back the T959UVJFD stock through Odin. Look in the bible or search in this website.
Why is your update.zip in DCIM? Download that one from the forum post, rename it to update.zip, and copy it to the root directory of your sd card.
Yea replace the update.zip with a modified one that gives you root access. Its should be on the bible(stickie post) and Recovery mode is correct.

Can you explain what is the root directory of internal sd card where I need to place the update.zip file?

Now my computer isn't recognizing the phone when I mount the sd card. It tries to install drivers for the phone and can not.
Ok, by root directory they just mean the internal 16gb memory.
Ok look, download update.zip. Rename it to "update" without the quotation marks. If you are running windows 7 you dont have to add ".zip" windows knows it is a .zip file, so again just name it update and windows and your phone will automatically know it is update.zip. maybe the problem is you are naming it "update.zip" and your phone is reading it as "update.zip.zip"
Anyways, I don't know why your drivers don't work, but once you get your computer to recognize your phone. Mount your phone to your computer.
Then go to your internal memory, the 16gb one, not the external sd card.
Now, DON'T GO INTO any folders, the root is just the internal memory, again don't go into any folders. Place the "update" file into the internal memory, don't place it into any folder.
Reboot your phone into recovery mode, and then reinstall packages.
good luck.

Nevermind. But thanks alot for your response and help. After looking around to find some alternative ways to root..I finally was able to root my vibrant using the method described
HERE
In the end, rooting was as easy as installing a simple app.
Now im going to do some research on ROMs and hopefully flash before doing titanium backup.

Ok, make sure you do lots of research. Read the bible, every last word of it.
Don't ever try to downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1 without having the proper 2.1 kernal, becareful with lagfix such as voodoo, and learn odin.
good luck
I have run into another issue. I can not mount my phone to computer.
With USB Debugging off... I dont even get a notification in the slide down menu asking me to either mount/unmount.
With USB Debugging on... I do get the option in slidedown menu to mount my phone. At the same time the computer shows a pop up message asking me to install driver software for Samsung_Android. In the meantime , I press mount sd card which by the way is still not recognized by the computer.
I dont have the driver for samsung_android to install on the computer.
Does anyone know a potential fix for this situation.
Thanks.

Follow this Guide to the letter and you will be fine!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
Thanks but isn't that the way to run it of the internal flash. I want to run it of the sd card so I can go back to the regular nook if I want to.

You need to run 7zip and unzip the file to a .img file. The dowload comes through as a .img.gz file. When you have that, write the file you extracted to your usd with win32diskimager or what ever burn program you like.
I am able to get as far as it is downloading it to the sd card. I can see the progress bar and as it is at 80% or 90% it says it can't read the image file. what gives?
What program are you using to copy the image to the sd card?
You may want to use win32diskimager or WinImage85 to copy image to SD card. You cannot simply copy files over to SD card.
Using any of these programs will reformat card in the process and copy image to SD card.
Make sure you're unzipping the installer and copying just single file from size agnostic installer. After the image is on SD card, go ahead and copy CM7 and Google Apps.
Insert SD card on NK and boot it, it will start installation automatically.
I tried using win32diskimager and winimage but neither can do it. With win32diskimager I can't even find the file and with winimage I can find it but when it is downloading it says it can't read the image file

With Win32diskimager ( What I use)--It will NOT see the file you need to burn to usd-Until you unzip the dowloaded file with 7zip. You MUST unzip the .img.gz file you download to get the extracted .img file for burning. Once you have it extracted to your desktop, click on the browse button in win32diskimager(the little folder next to the image line) and select the .img file. Select the drive you have your usd card mounted in (it will be a letter for your usb port), and click write.
what is 7zip

It is an unpacking/unzipping program--read about and download here:

thank you times a billion. I finally thing I got it all ready. now, is there anything I should know before I try it. Stuff like problems tricks or tips.
copy google apps to SD card. The installer should go ahead and install CM7 and google apps.
on mine it worked perfectly. it's not guaranteed that it works every time, but it worked for me so may want to give it a try and it will save you some time.
btw, on my earlier post I named the same program 2x, I meant to say win32diskimager or WinImage85. sorry about that.
OK, I was attempting to root my Simple touch and apparently I pulled the SD card too early.
Now all I have is the Nook by Barnes and Noble screen flashing every 3 seconds and not going any farther.
I can hold the power button down for 30 seconds and get the Read Forever screen that says Your Nook is now starting up, then it goes back to flashing.
Has anyone run into this problem?? Is there a fix? I'd still like to root this touch.
I was able to root my kindle fire with a little finesse in the instructions and I love the abilities it now has.
I know the touch won't have that kind of capabilities but, I'd like it to have more than it came with.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
PJ
Try this:
Touch-Formatter v2
or
n2T-Recovery + Force reset and upgrade to 1.1.
Then re-root with TouchNooter or any flavour of MinimalTouch
EdEd333,
Thanks for the qiuick reply.
I'm using the CRM program, I think I have everything in the right place. The NST has booted with the logo, I'm able to move through the menus, get to the part to Choose zip from SD card and it's telling me E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip.
I don't know if it's reading the SD card in the NST as the E drive but, when I pull the card out and check it on my laptop, I don't see any files named update.zip.
Did I miss a file somewhere?
the Alpha-formattouch-2.zip file is on the card as well. I've looked at it on my computer and I don't see an update.zip there either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You need to select "Choose zip from SD" or something to that effect.
Googie2149 is right.
I just updated the instructions on the thread.
This are the new steps for the v2 zip:
Copy the zip onto the root directory of the sdcard you burned the CWM.(Don't extract them)
Insert the sdcard on your nook, and boot it.
On CWM select install zip from sdcard
Then select choose zip from sdcard
Select Alpha-FormatTouch-2.zip, click yes and wait till the process finishes.
Go back, eject the sd card, and click reboot.
Hello everyone, I'm really new to rooting my NST and I have everything I need to do it. A SD card, a reader and I downloaded Win32DiskImager.
At first I was trying to root my 1.0.1 Nook with touchnooter but when I downloaded the zip file and tried to unzip it, it said it was empty. I downloaded touchnooter again and it still the same thing.
Now I have it upgraded to 1.2.1 to try it with nookmanager 0.5.0, and the zip file I downloaded still says it's empty.
Is there something I'm not noticing here?
