Unable to receive SMS/MMS after porting to T-Mobile - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I just joined T-mobile last week and ported over my old phone number to it. I'm able to receive and make phone calls just fine, but I'm unable to receive SMS/MMS messages. Oddly I can send them to my friends, and they have all confirmed receiving the messages (they called/emailed me to let me know). I was told it would take 2-8 hours on average to port my number over, but up to 48 hours worst case. It's been 5 days now.
I've contacted T-Mobile about 8 times now over the phone, and each time I'm told to check my APN settings, clear my data and cache in the messaging app, reboot the phone, put it into airplane mode then out of airplane mode. Nothing is working. Upon googling, some people have said to contact their technical department and to ask for a number rebroadcast. They're not working on this, and I hope it works as I sent and received several text messages on a daily basis, both work and personal.
Has anyone ever had issues like this? I'm scared that it'll never be fixed, and I really don't want to resort to getting a new phone number just to "fix" the issue. Some people on google in the past have said a rebroadcast has fixed it for them, while others have gone weeks without resolve. All of these horror stories were from 2009 or 10, so I'm hoping now that a few years have passed, T-Mobile has their act straightened and can fix this.

Try this: open the dialer and press *#*#4636#*#*
Then phone information.
Scroll down to SMSC and hit refresh. Make sure it reads "+12063130004",145. (Including quotations) if not change it to that.
See if that helps.
P.S. you may want to write down the smsc before you change it.

It matched exactly. Not sure what to do but wait 24 hours like they said I guess. Although I've waited the past 3 days every time they've told me they were trying something new. I really do appreciate your help though. I noticed WCDMA was selected as my primary network type, is this correct?

Yep that's correct. Wcdma preferred. One more thing to check. Is your old phone still on? That can mess up SMS as well during porting.

I ported my number from a Google voice account. Friends of mine have done this a few times flawlessly, so I figured I'd port mine over too since everyone practically calls/texted me at that number. Google claims the number has been transferred completely over to T-mobile, so it's their issue if I'm not receiving SMS messages.

Hmmm. Well I'm out of ideas. Hopefully it sorts itself out Good luck!

I'm not on the prepaid plan if that helps. I noticed some users on google searches had different APN settings for prepaid plans. I'm on their new $50 unlimited text, talk, web plan. Also to jonapunk, funny thing is I can text myself and receive it near instantly, but I can't receive messages from other T-Mobile users, or any other carrier.

I don't think apn settings make a difference when it comes to your plan.
What radio are you on? Look under settings/about phone/ what are the last 2 digits where it says baseband version?

I would test it out on another phone, if that does not work it's mostly something wrong on t-mobiles side. Had a similar issue but it resorted itself out after some time when porting to t-mobile.

Disable data while allowing mms

Still can't figure this out. Trying apndroid but not working. Do I need to turn on or off n e thing in settings?? Data? 2g only? According to statement online, still going online
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I think this depends on your carrier's apn settings.
On Orange in the UK, I have separate apns for data and mms, so I can disable or enable them separetely.
Other carriers use a single apn for both however.
there is no way to do this because of the way android uses access points. i know, i want to do this too. i dont like how android only has either on or off data. other phones, like my symbian devices for example, data only turns on when you open an app that needs data. and when you close that app the data session terminates, which saves a tremendous amount of battery life.
android on the other hand keeps an always-on data connection, no matter what, even when the phone is not doing anything or using any data. this is why android devices get such poor battery life compared to other devices.
yah. in settings, theres only 1 apn for t-mobile. thats sucks. some ppl said apndroid works but i cant seem to figure out a way to make it not go on net while allowing mms. that sux. =3 was soo hoping i can use mms now since my old 1st gen iphone couldnt
thats kinda stupid too cuz im tryin to accept pictures which should theoretically count as just messages or counted under the texting plan (unlimited for me) but the phone uses "data" to download it.
I don't see the point on using mms at all in smartphones, it is so much easier to just attach the picture to an email.
Well, for me at least, since my carrier gives me unlimited data an no mms at all. But still, its been ages I don't get an mms from someone.
Back to the topic, unless you have separated apn for data and mms there's no way to disable one and keep the other. At least I don't know how.

I'm pretty sure if you create a APN with only the MMS settings, and set it as MMS type, it should only do mms.
OP, have you called your carrier and asked them for proper APN settings for what you want to to do?

i dont think that will work. he currently has mms working fine. this is a limitation with android OS. for example symbian you can turn off the data connection, and when an mms comes in, the data turns on and retrieves the message, then closes the data connection. android cannot do this. with android data is either on completely, all the time, or off completely all the time. and since mms grabs the pic via the data connection, it wont work if data is turned off.

i stand corrected, i was wrong i thought it was tied to the system data connection.
Yeah, just create a second APN and set its type to 'mms'. Keep your main one as type 'default, supl'. That way, you can disable your main APN and your MMS will still work fine (if that's what you want)
when i change the 2nd one to mms, i lose the dot next to the APN to enable it? i tried deleting the 1st apn but i cant recieve again
umm im confused what are you trying to do? receive mms? i have the 10 tmobile data plan and what i did was change the default apn name to
T-Mobile US-MMS
then the apn type to
mms
create a second apn and name it
T-Mobile US

Anyone else with simple mobile having problems receiving mms on there G2?

Title says it all, mine only work every once in a blue moon.
Its the one thing that is frustrating me with their service. It has worked MAYBE Twice.
Its the APN settings. It has to be something, no pun intended, simple in them that has to be added or taken away.

Agreed, I'm trying to figure it out
Keep me posted. I have tried everything from their website to their facebook page and even from a couple of threads here on xda. It seems that its somewhat device specific. There is no true 'setting'. I just got tired of trying different things and told everyone to email me because most everyone I know has a smartphone to do that with nowadays... still would like the option though. Knowing its busted annoys.
Maybe this will help:

What's interesting is there are no MMS Protocol option in my apn settings. I am trying these and will post results anyway, though. But my experience is always different when the variables are not the same.
Edit:
Yeah, doesn't seem to be working. Just keeps sending but never finishes. This is annoying!

I was playing around with settings and found that if I use chap authentication... BAM!!!
Also default, supl, mms in the last line as well.

sorry let me rephrase, I called simple mobile, there customer service(which is horrible btw), told me to create two apn's, one for web and the other for mms, did you do that or do you have one apn?
What is the success rate of downloading your picture messages?
also, can you just post your APN settings?

Have you tried changing the authentication settings as yet?
I just have one apn. The thing I noticed when I put two in is that our phones only use one at a time. There is no switch off component. we choose which settings and thatss the one it uses. I did that with the recommendation from the user who posted the settings and had a differnt set for the mms. After doing it I saw that it was useless because of the fact that you can only use one at a time.
I have sent myself photes on a number of occasions and they have worked everytime. I have noticed that it DOES NOT work on wifi. My apn settings are the default set with the authentication set to chap. That's it! Go to the apn settings and hit menu, then hit reset to default. It takes a minute or two. After, when it gets set, go to the and set chap auth. That's it.
I have tried to upload a screen shot but all the browsers and even the xda app won't let me. But that's the subject of another thread!
Hope this helps. Let me know when you have tried it.
I get them but they r almost always jacked up some how. The text won't show or the picture won't show or the pic will flash on the screen for like .01 seconds...
They is why I like email on my phone lol

anyone having issues with apps like gosms handling images are prob not gonna have them anymore thanks to this new config.

Quadrupled my speeds! I now have fiber optic business line speeds to my phone!!!
...Or not. This works just fine for me. I think it's pretty much the same for me speed-wise, though it does feel like the network responds a bit quicker. Can I get a "PLACEEEEEEEBOOOOOO" chorus? I'll use it and see if AT&T thinks I'm tethering or some other hot topic. I had no complaints previously, but I see no reason not to use this.

That is disappointing. Regular texts are perfect. MMS messages, whether picture or long text, do not send. I should have checked MMS earlier. Thanks!
No speed increase for me. Might actually be a bit slower. Thanks for post anyway.

Put in the sim card, go to settings - wireless and networks - mobile networks - check "on" Use packet data. Than press Acces point names and create new APN. Depends on what data plan you have you enter the APN settings. I am on grandfathered unlimited AT & T data plan so I created APN called cingular 410. All the settings for this APN you will find easy on this forum, if not, send me private email I will email it to you.It is not hard to set it up even if you are not really computer geek. ( I am not )

I was told just delete any apn in there. Create a new one and put ATT and Phone in the first two lines and the system will do the rest.
However, I have the same problem as the poster above, I can send/receive calls, get text but no picture message
It just sits there trying to send it out for ever...see picture below
At the bottom of your apn settings under apn type make sure you have internet and mms checked.
check but still no go on MMS
What is mmsc and what should that be at god this is really pissing me off I have done everything three time and still can't get it to work
I have this problem too! I added port 80 to my apn settings for mms port. At first I thought that cleared it up. But I still have a problem from time to time. Anyone?
Note: I only have issues with sending attachments, like pictures, to text messages (ie mms). Emailing attachments works fine.

Ok, I went through this drill with AT&T and it took a couple calls to get things sorted out after I activated my new line for my phone. I had precisely the same issue that you did where everything worked except MMS.
#1 - Be SURE they double checked that they provisioned your phone correctly on the back end. Unless your phone was correctly provisioned, your phone's APN settings don't mean jack. Ensure that AT&T setup your phone on the back end as though it was a Samsung Galaxy S2 (not the Skyrocket though). I had to get past tier 1 support to get my issues corrected.
#2 - Remove any and all APN entries you already have there and setup your phone as follows:
Under Settings\Mobile network settings: Use packet data (check to enable)
Tap 'Access Point Names'
Tap the menu button, left of the home button and choose 'New APN'
Name: AT&T WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username <not set> - Leave this alone
Password: <not set> - Leave this alone
Server: <not set> - Leave this alone
MMSC: http:/mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <not set> - Leave this alone
APN type: internet + mms
Do NOT forget to tap menu again and choose 'save'
This should work without rebooting the phone, but I rebooted mine anyway because they asked me to.
Again, make sure they correctly provisioned your phone and tell them that it should be setup as though it is a Galaxy S2 (not the Skyrocket).
My phone went from 3G/H+ with only sms and NO MMS reading/sending to full functionality once they fixed a provisioning issue AND only with the right APN settings, which AT&T gave me from their Galaxy S2 phone configs.
Enjoy.

the MMSC url should have read http with 2 slashes and not one like this: "http:/"
XDA won't let me post proper URL's until I have 8 posts, so forgive the intentional typo It keeps stopping me each time to try and find a way to fix it. I even had to wait 5 minutes to make the point of correction.
Spammers really have a way of making this suck for the rest of us...

OK so after all of that now does your Gnote say At&t on the top in the notification bar? Just a question as mine is working without me having to call att but took alot of work on my end and troubleshooting..but no at$t on the top just 3g and h+

Nope, no AT&T banner at all.
Me neither. . . My Sgt actually did have a att banner. . . Not sure that provides any insight on what a sgn should do...
I am still borkes on this front. My sgn works really well otherwise. . . .

Can't Receive MMS on T-Mo

I just switched from VZW to T-Mo and got a Nexus 4. Everyone is working perfect, but I can't send MMS's...only receive them. I've tried in both the stock messaging app and in Go SMS.
Does anyone know if there is something that needs to be set to receive MMS's? Below are my APN settings.
Thanks!

... I can send MMS and receive em' just fine. What are you talking about?
My setting is the same as OP.
Note: It's strange, but my data has to be toggled on in order to send MMS. I can't send any when it's off or when I'm on wi-fi.
Stock app works flawless for me but others do not.

Pushed thanks on accident.
On my G2x, it was problematic. It was APN settings that were a little off. On my i9300, nary a problem.
I'm using the stock app and uninstalled Go SMS Pro and still can't receive any MMS's....only send.
No one has any tips or tricks?
To send the fastest way is to be on 3g/h mode. To receive you can either be on E/3G/H or wifi. Make sure u aleays have a data connection if you have "auto retrieve" on.

As stated earlier, you have to have a data connection, not just voice (as with plain text messages). That explains why you have to have it toggled on.
Looks like they are showing up now....weird....
Is there a concrete fix

I'm definitely having some issues similar to this and I'm not trying to create a thread about it. I didn't find a concrete solution.
I have a notification that I have a mms but no message, If I don't get rid of the notification it's going to bug the hell out of me. Please help if you can.

I'm having this exact issue too (on my nexus 4) - I get notification of a text, but if it's MMS or a text to multiple people, then it's just empty. Only way to get rid of the notification is to tap the clear all notifications icon. But they come back. Quite the frustrating little problem.

I just started using the stock text app and all my issues went away.
