Been using NC with CM7 for over a year plus. Never any problems - until today. I haven't messed with any base settings for at least three months. The Nuance Swype and Dragon Trial app ran out today - the only thing that I messed with.
Was using it this afternoon on Google+ just cruising around. I put the NC down for about 20 minutes for an errand. Came back and I can't wake it up through the usual press of the "N". Long Press the N - no luck. Tap the Power button - no help. The only thing I could think to do was press and hold the Power button - nothing happened. Long press Power for about 15 seconds and I saw the screen flicker and the Cyanogen Mod green icon appear - like a normal start up. So the desktop arrives and I note that the Wi-Fi is turned off. Usually I have it set to autoconnect to my house router which it has faithfully done since forever. But Wi-Fi is turned off. I clicked it on and after a brief moment I see "Connecting..." up at the top of Wi-Fi Settings but every Access Point including the house router is "Not in Range". Eventually "Connecting..." turns into "Disconnected". Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. No difference. I think that whatever caused the blowout earlier this afternoon has left the NC wi-fi system in some sort of in-between state.
Later on as I was working with this, I got up to answer the phone, came back and it's shut off again. I was able to re-engage it twice more after pressing this n' that trying to wake the Wi-Fi up. Once engaged it's fine. But as soon as you power down (or it blows up like earlier), Wi-Fi is disonnected, turned off and very hard to re-establish. Incidentally, all other Android devices, tablet, phones in the house off that router work just fine so I don't think it's a matter of a router issue.
Question: Is there a way to "reset" the Wi-Fi functions in the NC? I'm thinking some sort of hard reset is needed but I'm not sure.
Question: What would be my next step to figure out what is causing the unwanted shut down?

First that 'unwanted shutdown' is called SOD, Screen of Death. Very common with some devices and combination of apps. Do a little searching on that and you will get overwhelmed with info. Since you were not having it before, it must have something to do with that app or apps that you had to adjust recently. It is tied in with deep sleep and wifi.
Have you tried just forgetting the routers in your wifi list?
Edit: I just reread your post. How long have you had Google + installed? Did you recently just update that?
Edit2: Fortunately, for CM7 there is a patch that fixes SOD. If you want it, I can post a link.
Edit3: Here. Flash this with CWM. It will replace your wifi driver with a patched one that resists SOD.

Lots of good information here. Google+ has been installed for at leat 6-9 months that I can recall. I could uninstall and reinstall, I guess. But...
It's seemed to have righted itself two days ago, so I haven't had a problem - until...
Last evening. I was doing some eMail using K-9 plus floating through Google+. And I put it down to go do something. Came back and it's still working (pulled up the desktop by clicking the "N") but the Wi-Fi is shut off again. Went to Wireless and Network Settings and what I see is "Wi-Fi" sitting on the words "Turning off...". Everything beneath it is greyed out. Decided to just leave it and see. Half hour or so later, it's still in a state of "Turning off...". I backed all the way out and did a restart. On restart, Wi-Fi is turned off so I hit the box to turn it on, it obeyed and went directly to my home router, signed in and I'm back on again.
As the evening progressed, what I got in the habit of doing is short-pressing the Power button to turn off the screen. I found I could reliably come back, wake it up and the Wi-Fi would start back up again on its own without intervention.
So until I get a chance to sort out all the stuff you gave me to do/patch, I'll try to just manually "sleep" the system. I have to study up more on what you said because the terminology and procedures, while probably very clear to most, are not exactly clear to me.

@leapin. I should have come back to post add info. My apologies. I believe I was able to resolve this a bit later. I looked at Juice Defender (free) and what it does. I uninstalled it. As soon as I did that, I suffered no more of these SOD problems. Been running great since June.
So was this the real SOD? Or was it Juice Defender setting the power profile in such a way that the Wi-Fi never got the signal to reawaken? What do you think?

It could have been the real SOD being triggered by Juice Defender. Usually it is some app that triggers it (trying to use wifi while the device is in deep sleep), but the underlying problem is SOD. Some folks never experience an SOD.

First of all I can't turn Wifi off and keep it off. Everytime I go into the menu to check on it, it's checked, so I uncheck it, and it'll turn off for a minute or two and then all of a sudden turns right back on. This is extremely annoying.
And the other is that it seems like in some apps my touchscreen presses don't keep the phone awake. So I can be interacting with the screen and then all of a sudden it'll go dim. I'll keep pressing on screen buttons and a few seconds later the display will shut off completely. The only way I can jog it back awake in its dimmed state is to move the trackball or press some other hardware button.
Anyone else seen these problems?

I've seen similar issue with the screen staying awake, thought it's just the phone. Also not sure if it's related sometimes I'll click on a button for example, but it will almost not recognize the spot i'm clicking on and click something else on the screen.
These are the same problems I've been seeing on my phone. I imagine it is due to the multitouch hack, but I haven't gotten the motivation to downgrade my phone back to 1.31.
Do you have anything installed like power manager or locale? One of those progams may be turning on wifi.

Nope, I had installed Power Manager once a while back and didn't like how it worked so I uninstalled it. Don't have Locale installed either. I ran the task manager to see what was running and there was nothing that I could tell that would turn the wifi on.
The touch issues are rather widespread amongst 1.41 users. However, don't know what's up with ur wifi. I have a strange issue with my wifi as well though. Whenever I boot up my phone and wifi was enabled when it turned it off. I get 2 not responding errors. Everytime. Its like clockwork. With 3g? Never. It took me about 20 wipes and 10 or so hours to finally figure it out. Hopefully all these problems will be fixed with rc33
I have also noticed that Applications don't check for new updates anymore. even when I go to "My Downloads", It used to show "free" next to any application that has an update or has been uninstalled. Now it shows "Installed" next to all the applications but when I go to the application by category, It shows up as "Free" meaning that there is a new version.
the case in simple points:
1. when I open the Application..... It doesn't detect the update.
2. when I go to "My Downloads" in the market, It doesn't show "Free" next to any application that has an update.
But if I go to the application by category, It shows "Free".

i havnt had a problem with it staying on, i noticed that my phone was dimming to quickly. I know theres probably an adjustment somwhere (i think at least) but i havnt had any problems what so ever with it.
Very strange. I haven't had either problem (wifi or touchscreen). I have noticed that my battery drains more quickly than it used to, but I have been blaming this on the DroidSans autorotate feature always flipping the screen everytime I move the phone (I mess with the phone an awful lot).

DroidSans Tweaks checks the version. At the moment it's not going to recognize RC33 as a valid version. Wait for it to be updated.

Ok about a couple hours ago I noticed my wifi would turn itself on multiple times, and I turn it off and it keeps coming on, I think it does it when I put my phone to sleep, im not sure. I think it started happening since I installed the Blue Star 5 theme. Any ideas?

Figured I would ask. I have mine set up so that it would automatically fire up my wifi because although I get 3G outside I can't get it through my mighty wooden walls where I live. Go figure. Every so often I guess Locale looses my position and it puts me on and off the network. Pretty annoying. So I disabled that and installed some apps to keep my wifi on even while my phone sleeps. There's a few out there, Wifi Insomnia, Wi-Fi Lock, KeepWiFi are a few that I have experiment with. Although since I have all three installed now... I'm honestly not sure which one I'm using.

Hmmm. Well... maybe try seeing if it does it in safe mode if that doesn't work. If it does it in safe mode too then I dunno. If it doesn't then it's probably an app messing with it.
I heard it could be ShopSavvy that is causing that.
If you have an app like keepwifi that basically keeps your wifi signal on, that might be whats causing it. If not, you might want to try other apps that require things such as internet access or access to settings.
We need an list of apps you have installed. Power Manager will do this also.
I too am having this problem!
Sometime the wifi doesn't stay on and I only knew it was turning on thanks to wifi toggle's symbol at the top.

Okay,figured out what it is. Its the theme u downloaded. Couple hours ago my g1 started turning on the wifi whenever it felt like it.I figured it was something I downloaded recently but I downloaded apps to check them out& then uninstalled them.apps have no effect after u uninstall them.then u mentioned the theme u just downloaded. Well go figure,I just downloaded the same theme wit a few others today.then my wifi started acting up.concidence? I think not.

Hmmm, im not sure if its the theme, someone mentioned the setting on ShopSavvy, after I took it off it hasnt been turning on. I still have the theme on btw, but I modified it, so it may have been ShopSavvy

Weird, i had shopsavvy from day one, never encountered such a problem. still have it, and deleted the theme. Now the wifi is back to normal. problem with the G1 is, everyone can have the same problems or issues but different solutions with each device lol. the beauty of the G1.
Btw, does anyone know if the "shake awake" app really kills the battery?

ShopSavvy is a definite cause of this problem. I've been in touch with the developers over it, and they have admitted that there's a problem with the WiFi coming on randomly
they've assured me that the next update will fix it. i hope so, because ShopSavvy was useful until it started doing this

yes, this fixes the issue of ShopSavvy randomly switching on the WiFi and disconnecting ongoing sessions, but it completely renders the most useful thing about ShopSavvy useless.
I've been beta testing the latest version of ShopSavvy, and it doesn't seem to be doing this random WiFi anymore. It is also a version of ShopSavvy that is compatible with Cupcake 1.5.
I just noticed this morning that when I hit the power button the screen only dims now. I swear it used to shut off the display completely before today, and I know for certain that is how it worked on 1.6. This really is annoying, because now when I put it in my pocket the 3 buttons are constantly being depresses and they vibrate, which lights the display again. That coupled with this stupid lock screen that I have to try to open 3-4 times is really making me angry. Maybe it's just me thugh.....
I'm assuming you upgraded to 2.1?
I remember reading somewhere that someone had a similar issue after upgrading to 2.1 but then they re flashed 2.1 a different way and problem went away.
Same issue here, it really eats up my battery life, and I do end up pushing those soft keys all-too often... I am on 2.1 and that is definitely when the problem started, I'm going to try reflashing to see if I can eliminate the issue.
try the steps found here on streaksmart.com. She reports that she has no issues when its done that way. I don't have my streak yet but will follow these steps when i get it.
I had a similar problem before, only the screen would go off and on again and stay on!
Turns out it was an APP that done this.
It is possible an app is causing the problem.
Don't leave wifi on when not using and the problem disappears.

I've been experimenting with what's been causing this on mine, and I noticed that sometimes wifi will not shut all the way off. It hangs at "Turning off..."
So I tried not letting it sleep with wifi on, I turn it on if I need it, then turn it off (really a big pain in the butt) but went two days with no "no sleep" problems.
Today I tried leaving wifi on all the time, not two hours later it happened.
Since it's not happening to everybody, I wonder if it has something to do with our wifi setups. Maybe the router brand, or the encryption type, or something?
Last night I powered off the phone before better. I have wifi on all the time and I never shut it off. Today though, I have had no issues with the sleep function. It's still mid afternoon so we'll see if it continues this way. If so I will explore the wifi solution as well.

mine was checked and we all know what that mean. Check yours to be sure if your not up for flashing again. Just a thought in case you overlooked this...

Yes, it means the screen will not time out and go off when it's being charged, but you can still turn it off, and mine wasn't plugged in when I couldn't turn it off.

It seems that Bluetooth did it today. I was fine all day going black on sleep with power button, but once I switched on wireless to connect to my car stereo it never went off again. Even if I turn off the wireless I have to shut down and reboot.

Same here. Started car and it showed zero signal strength for the phone on the dashboard display. Pressed the power button on the Dell Streak and the car display then displayed the signal strength. From then on, the screen would dim but not shut off.

Yes, and I couldn't turn it off once the "screen dim bug" took hold. Today I've rebooted and left Bluetooth OFF and Wireless ON and have not had an issue all day long, and that's making calls, using 3G, wireless and running a pile of apps. I think I can live with no Bluetooth until the next release.

Fair call. However, I've now had BT off for 6 hours and I'm using 3G, wireless and USB transfers and it hasn't hiccuped yet. This is the longest I've had with no screen dim bug.
I did notice that when I walked out to the car, the Streak could still "see" my home wireless network, then starting the car and the BT pairing and connecting is when the screen dim bug came back.
Maybe it's when both are run at the same time and both are connected/paired?

I agree its looks like its a wifi issue. I always keep my bluetooth off and it still did it.
I got mine fixed... but the problem is i did a bunch of steps and now cant figure out which one actually fixed it. its been running great for 12hrs now.
What I did, since I noticed that wifi sometimes didn't sleep or wake itself up properly all the time (which i think is what's affecting our Streak sleeping), was turn off the wifi sleep. In other words when my device shuts off wifi stays active.
However, I then used "Tasker" from the Market and setup two profiles. When the screen goes off it shuts off 3G, wifi and autosync. Then when the screen comes on it turns on 3g/wifi, waits 20 secs and enables autosync (which then initiates a mail/calendar/contacts sync).
This has worked perfectly, and I get mad good battery life to boot. Now this means I don't get mail/updates (facebook, weather, etc - still get calls and txts obviously) but for me it's not a big deal especially for the battery life.
I may eventually setup more Tasker events to duplicate "Juice Defender" and poll every half hour (3G only, when screen is off only) to get my updates, but for now it's been working great.
I also setup profiles so if I'm not where I have wifi pairings it shuts down wifi. Also if it detects I'm connected via wifi (at home for instance) it disables my lock screen. I also have it set to only start GPS for apps that need it (Maps, Navigation, Places, etc) and that helps save battery too.
Tasker is an awesome app for $3.99. It has a steep learning curve, but there are enough walk-throughs available to teach you how to do the basics.

Found the fix on Modaco. Have a look at the last page of the thread called "2.1 Bugs ....., Add what you find please....."
I never knew there was an "Advanced" menu for WiFi!
yeah that is not it. I also have mine set to never time out so does that mean it will never shut off either? Anyway, it keeps happening through the day. Wifi and bluetooth do seem to have something to do with it, but I need them both on all the time so the only thing I can do is reboot. Then it is good for a couple hours. Are the any apps that have a reboot? That's one thing I miss on the iPhone.

I recently noticed an issue with my wifi (stock 2.3.3), where an app that needs to update regularly didn't seem to be doing it when the screen was off. As the phone always sits on its dock when I'm at home, I "solved" the issue by making the screen never turn off.
However, today I decided to give SIPdroid another go, as I tested it when I first got my phone and it wasn't working properly. I found out why, the second I put the phone to my ear, the screen turns off and the sound cuts. If I take the phone away, I suddenly get all the audio high speed as it catches back up.
A bit of googling showed this to be a known issue, the wifi goes into power saving mode when the screen turns off - on SIPdroid there's an option to keep the screen off and it seems to work well, it just dims the screen instead. But that's still an unnecessary battery drain.
I had trouble finding any recent info on the issue (within the past 6 months), maybe I was just using the wrong keywords. So I thought I'd ask here. Does anyone know anything about this issue? Is it likely to be fixed in the next version of android if it ever comes to the desire HD? Maybe there's a fix out there already (preferably without rooting and/or installing custom rom, my phone is just right as it is now...).

That'll prevent the wifi turning off when the screen turns off.

I tried that before posting, it makes no difference whatsoever (besides, the sleep policy is either never or 15 minutes, this problem occurs the second the screen goes off).

This problem has been going on for a week or two now. Phone worked great when I first got it, but something must have changed (newest Verizon update, perhaps?)
Let me preface this by saying I've seen this happen both on Wi-fi and 4G. When on Wi-fi, and it happens, I've tried turning Wi-fi off and still get the same errors.
The apps affected seem to be random. A couple days ago it was Google Maps, I was getting the "offline navigation" prompt. Today it was Chase (couldn't screenshot it), TeamViewer, IMDb and so on.

- First encountered the problem when opening TeamViewer.
- Did a Speedtest to confirm that yes, I'm really on 4G as the phone shows, and it's quite a stable and fast connection too.
- Let's try some more apps. Here's Target's Cartwheel
- Delta app? Same problem.
- TeamViewer Host app. Same problem as the client.
- IMDb. One more random one not working.
- Lastly, I went back to Pokémon Go to confirm I DO still have network connectivity (not sure why the screenshot got ghosted like that, but you can see I just redeemed items from a Pokéstop I was near with no errors)
So as you can see, the phone itself, as well as certain apps, work fine. But others don't. I tried turning airplane mode on and back off, disabling/enabling mobile networks, nothing works. The only thing I can do is reboot the phone.
Any ideas? This gets incredibly annoying as I can't seem to go a whole day without *some* app whining that it has no network access. Some apps work flawlessly every time (like the aforementioned Pokémon Go) but others don't.
By the way, that little screenshot button in the bottom left is from this neat app called Custom Navigation Bar. I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with this problem, though, all it does is add buttons.

Let me preface this by saying I've seen this happen both on Wi-fi and 4G. When on Wi-fi, and it happens, I've tried turning Wi-fi off and still get the same errors.

Do you have powersave mode on? I've had some problems with it enabled..
No I don't have power save mode on. Should I turn off the power monitoring of apps as well? Didn't think that mattered as long as power save mode was off.

You could try. I dont know, what i Said about powersave profile in battery settings Was My bet.

I turned all the power saving stuff off and still have this happening. As in, I set it to not even monitor how much power each app is using.
