Back and Menu buttons sometimes don't work - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heelo.
I have noticed that sometimes (happened to me 3 times in 4 weeks now) while doing random things (most recentone was when i was looking at a picture on facebook and wanted to exit the picture), back and menu buttons under the screen don't respond. Home button works, touchscreen works, but menu and back key doesn't. In order to make it work I have to turn the screen on and back on so that they start working. I am using OMEGA 3.1 ROM and Faux 003 kernel.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 2

Check if on stock rom it doesn't work either, or ask in the rom/kernel thread.
Sent with Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT I9505)

As I mentioned it happened 3 times in about 4 weeks now, so it's not a kind of thing that I could test with other roms, because it's very very rare. But I have also noticed that sometimes the same two buttons are less responsive than other times (like sometimes I can barelly press it with a tip of my index finger and it responds, but other times it does not respond when touched with point of finger, it only responds when I touch it with the pad of my finger - does it have something to do with electricity or softer skin on pads of fingers?).
Thank you

I've had this a few times in a bit over a week. Doesn't bother me as it's pretty rare and most likely a bug that will be fixed or possibly bugs in the apps themselves.
Good thing home button still works.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium

I also think it's a bug. Just had to ask as I didn't find anything with google
Thank you!!

I think he asked if you could test on a stock rom so you can see if its a hardware issue. Ive had mine for almost 4 weeks now and my back and menu button never failed to respond so far. Im on stock btw.

Same thing has happened to me a few times also.
I will be using an app or something, attempt to push the back button to get out of that app, and all of a sudden both the back button AND menu buttons die.... u press the area where they are located and nothing happens, no vibration, no light up, no nothing. The only way to fix it, is to restart the phone.
Only happens very rarely - and hard to guage when it might occur and repeat, due to its random nature.

Same thing happens to me. Also very rare, it's happened twice in 1 month

I also have it happen from time to time. Don't have to reboot tho, it will start working by itself after a while.

Where are these "many people", because I have also never heard this one?
Not saying it's not true, but I'm pretty active reading most of the major threads and haven't seen this as an issue before.
I would try flashing a different ROM just to make sure it's not a bad flash. If that doesn't clear it up, you can be sure that it's hardware related.
I had the same issue with my first vibrant. Call tmobile and get a replacement.

Bump anyon else experienced this ?

I experience this every once in awhile. I really think its just lag. I find myself pressing my back and menu button multiple times. But its usually when I have multiple apps running at the same time. But its not often of enough to call it broken. It was a orginal hardware lock phone.
I have this issue with the menu button sometimes. It doesn't feel like lag because the buttons don't even light up. Seems to be more prevalent on froyo roms.
***Swyped onto XDA via Vibrant***
So the conclusion is that its a software issue or hardware?
This problem does exist maybe not with the majority of users.. but I too suffer from this problem every now and then. Sometimes my home button will work flawless and sometimes it can be a pain in the ass!! literally becoming unresponsive to the point of multiple taps in order to get some response. I'm sure its not lag because this even takes place at the home screen with literally nothing going on in the background.
Had the exact same issue, it is software. In my case I've been using the Zeam launcher, it was NOT Zeam at fault, rather the Gingerbread Launcher Free that came loaded with my ROM. I found a post with the same symptoms from someone who was using LauncherPro. After removing the unused launcher (Gingerbread Launcher free) and rebooting the home key is behaving just as it should.
im willing to bet its not the same for everyone
if you have a screen protector on (such as realook), i guarantee that is your issue
In my case, it was the overclock settings with Setcpu. remove overclock to see if ok on yours.

i have same issue, sometimes really bad response - i use button remmaper for remap search to home and i have 2 home button now

[Q] Why does my Evo tend to lose its sense of touch??!!

I'm running on CM7 and sometimes i notice that my evo's touch is COMPLETELY out of calibration wher ei have to reboot. for example, if i touch the home key, it will tap on something at the top of the screen, etc...its like everything is complete uncalibrated. Has anyone else experienced this?
Only when my phone is plugged into a third-party charger, and even then it's sporadic.
The evo has a drinking problem. It's just a hangover and will subside shortly. Don't worry.

try a different ROM..
or make sure you wipe everything... 3 times..
there is even a mod that can make sure your phone is rally clean. look for it.
or your phone just does not like that ROM.
Actually, when my wonks out, all I have to do is change to a different home screen (as in swipe to the left or the right), and it resets.
Rom. Issue. Either in your download Or the Rom itself Or your installation. I have had 2 out of 15 roms do that and I will never use them again. On to the next one lol.
I have never had this problem.
Only experience this while being on the charger

Can't say I have had that happen. Only the ghost Haptic Touch. lol Like the phone will vibrate/wig out in your pocket when it has not been touched. Only happened to me a few times before though.

[Help] weird back button, event fires twice

Sometimes my backbutton fires twice. Its very annoying when browsing and going a page back and it actually jumps 2 pages back.
I checked the behaviour with the app "KeyEvent Display" and it clearly shows that sometimes 4 events are fired instead of 2 (keyup + keydown).
The app requests root, but you dont need it for only testing the keyevents. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks
Mine does exactly the same, from what I've worked out its related to the phone running slow but I have no idea how to fix it, if we find an answer if be very grateful its very annoying!

I feel left out haha ive never had this problem. I have however had an issue where the screen decides to freak out and decides to do things at random, it gets annoying when im typing and all of a sudden all the keys start being pressed on thier own.
locking and unlocking fixed is temporarily.
Does anyone have a custom rom flashed with this issue still happening? That would tell us pretty quick if it was hardware/software related.
I have had this problem too well since i upgraded to 2.3.3
I have a UK Sim free generic handset unmodded.

All the custom roms except for CM7 are based on the SE stock rom anyway, so if anyone on CM7 dosent have this problem the info would be useful
I have same issues with this for the up and down arrow it always post two key strokes in Bruce lee. I can't do some special moves and finish moves because of this I am wondering if I should try and get a replacement Verizon stock ROM
Could the double back button issue be caused by the circle button?
Maybe as you press the back button the back of the screen also pushes the circle button?
I dont have this issue btw.
Tbh i have only noticed this problem if i have the phone in my right hand and i use my thumb to press the back button (reaching over the phone to the back key). If i use the phone in my left hand and use my thumb no problem lol.
If i use it normally (phone in 1 hand and using a finger from my other hand) to press the keys i do not have this problem..... Strange
Well, I think I worked out what's happening. Try holding the 'R' shoulder key and press the back button.
I imagine what is happening is android is picking up the shoulder button press but it doesn't do anything. Then pressing the back button fires the event twice. The same way you can fool windows into repeating the wrong key when you hold 2 buttons down (may be fixed in windows ).
Now the question is, how the hell fan you fix it?
I'll submit it to SE later on tonight and see what they say.
EDIT: definitely seems to be certain apps. It doesn't happen in settings but does happen in tapatalk.

Lg g2 sprint variant "Knock on" feature broke

Well. It worked up until about 20 mins ago. Then randomly just stopped working. Ive rebooted, shut down, enabled and disabled the feature in settings. Fixed permissions for the heck of it. Cleaned the screen. Reset calibration, etc. Nothing seems to work. I can double tap to shut the screen off easily, and it works flawlessly, but trying double tap to wake is completely useless. Any suggestions?

Tons of lg users are experiencing this issue. Its a design flaw with a hardware component that easily breaks. Wonderful build quality -_-...right. So only option is replacing the phone. But to how soon, until the other one breaks. So its kinda like. Well. This blows. I suppose Ill install a custom kernel and enable screen wake features that way.

Okay. So after hours of tapping. Which might i add. My fingers hurt, I am now able to activate the screen. Pausing after each tap, using my finger print area to tap "not to be confused with finger tip". The screen will activate. Also note, the standard two taps works sometimes, but with four presses, i seem to get the best results. Give it a try people. I have a theory the hardware has not failed. But yet, the activation area pixel size value changed. Either due to a conflicting app install. A intermittent system glitch etc

I'm having the same issue with my G2. Knock-on/off was working fine. Had the phone in the sun for a little while (maybe 2 hours) and the knock-on has stopped working completely. Used a drawing app on my screen and found no dead pixels or strips. Knock off still works perfectly though.
This could also be an issue with your proximity sensor. If something (screen protector, finger, dust, etc.) is blocking your proximity sensor, it could be reporting to the phone that it is in a pocket, and to keep the screen off. Try to clean that area, and avoid obstructing the sensors "view". As for the leaving it in the sun, you could have damaged the sensor? You could test it by making a call real quick and see if the screen turns on when you pull the phone away from your face.

This^. For me I have to use my entire thumb or even palm, but it occasionally works.(still like 1/30 tries). This leads me to believe that it is software related. This one issue is killing me. I hate using the power button on the back so I only used knock on. Now that it's not working I'm hating this phone. Knock off works great and I know knock on is kernel based so maybe someone can create a kernel that fixes this issue.
This did work for me. Fixed the knock on feature on my D802.
Credit: Smith I Run (Thread from android central. Can't post link to thread)
There is a solution; (not sure about it, my friend had the same problem and he fixed it with this method)
Open dialer menu and type;
5689#*980# (Sprint)
3845#*801# (T-Mobile)
3845#*803# (AT&T Canada)
3845#*802# (International)
3845#*800# (At&T)
3845#*980# (Verizon)
And when hidden menu is showed up, go to "Settings"
and go to "Update Touch Firmware".
The touchscreen won't work until after 5 seconds, Wait for it and if touchscreen gets working, exit the menu.
Lock the phone and try knocking on the screen, It should be working

Action Memo lag

Does anyone know why the action memo often takes more than 10 secs sometimes to launch. Its very annoying especually when I'm trying to.write.something quickly
Sent from my SM-N910P using XDA Free mobile app
What? 10 seconds? Action memo on my Note4 is opened in just about 1 sec.
I was most likely exaggerating the time. Exact length of time but it wasnt instantaneous, which was frustrating when say for example i was saying oh note 4 this is one of the great features and it would be delayed.more than 1 or 2 secs which then would turn into embarrassment. It was a noticeable delay for.me.to post this topic.

Hi guys. Hope your all well.
I just got my note 4 (SD) a couple of days ago and seem to be having the same issue. All I have done so far is just rooted the device. So I don't even have a custom ROM. Yet, when I take out the s-pen, action memo takes ever so long and trust me, mine is longer than 10 secs. And just to top it up, I tried whilst reading your posts and now I have written this post on my phone, action memo is still not coming up!!! This is annoying.
Have you had any luck? @op
It has seemingly gone away latley. I did update fully to NK2 via ODIN then rooted on stockish NK2 deodexed. I dont know if it was a software bug or what. I was beyond frustrated.
Another issue that annoys me is often at weord times it freezes up when typing then there is a noticeable delay. Already had ot happen while typing this!
Experienced anything like that as well? Its still present was just wondering.

Action memo update: it never did pop up at the end. So rebooted the phone and tried as soon as it booted. And it worked straight away. So it seems to work ok for a bit after a reboot but then eventually disappears to a world of its own which i cant reach lol. Another thing i noticed compared to my Note 3 , action memo is not listed as "action memo" in root/system/app. It also does not showup in the list of applications via settings. I was checking this to see whether greenify hibernates it. But i cant tell if i cant find the damn app! Lol. Any thoughts on that ?
Regarding your question, i do tend to have a few lags whilst typing or doing certain tasks one after the other. Where i found the most lag with the keyboard is in whatsapp. Sometimes the lag is so bad that i think the phone has frozen and is about to reset itself (have had that before on note 3 a few times) but eventually the keyboard catches up with my fast typing fingers. I have also ,about 20 mins ago ,did the build prop edit regarding secure storage/s health as i have xposed framework installed. So lets see how much difference if any, it makes regarding lags. Btw, I'm on NK4.
18:43 update: action memo does not pop up now. If I reset the phone, it'll pop up. This is really p***ing me off now.
18:46 update: May have figured it out. I believe action memo is now embedded within s note.....which I put in the greenify list to hibernate. I unhibernated it and action memo seems to pop up with no problem. Will monitor it.
Can someone perhaps help me???? Mine doesn't even work!!! I updated my note 4 to lollipop a long time ago and last week I did a factory reset and now the action memo crashes almost 50 milliseconds after it pops up!!!! I looked everywhere and found only one solution that worked for someone having the problem and it was changing the animations in dev tools back to 1x. Mine were 1x but before I changed them to .5 and then back to 1 and I tried changing these several times and it DID NOT WORK. Can someone help??
I don't find solution
I have exactly the same problem. 10 seconds. It is not an exaggeration. Someone has a solution?
