On the Galaxy Nexus there is a kernel module that detects finger slides to wake the device. Has anyone come up with something like that for the Nexus 7. If the tablet is on the table it's hard to tap the power button and having some type of slide wake would be pretty cool.
Exactly what i'm looking for. Even breaking my lurker status to bump this.
Pressing the power button all the time is annoying since it's in an awkward position.
Isn't that why we have smart cases.?

Somewhat, yes. Since this is my second post it won't let me post a URL but go to the Play store and search for PGM Nexus, it has a demo video of it.
Does PGM Nexus definitely not work? I haven't gotten around to rooting my device but Google Play claims that it's compatible.
I would love to see an update for it that adds support if it doesn't have it already....
I tried PGM, no joy. Smart Screen ON proximity wake isn't compatible either.
It gave error message about the kernel.
We need another solution to wake without physical buttons.
I have not tried it personally, but does this app work?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827448
Wave Control listed as not compatible in Play store.
Does n7 even have a proximity sensor? If not (and I don't think so) no point in even considering the last two.

Well, the official Google tech spec sheet doesn't list it, but some others do list it.
There is definitely something next to the camera. As to wether it is used as a light sensor for the camera or backlight adjustment, I don't know.
Elixer shows me that my N7 has a Lite-On aI3010 Ambient Light Sensor with a relosution of 1 lux up to 72945 Lux.
I don't know if that is good enough to wave it awake.
Either way one of our kernel gods should be able to make the slide to wake work, because I'm pretty sure it has a touch screen.
Don't suppose anyone knows the PGM guy?
Bump. Any current kernel mod include this option?

When using the tablet in a dark room with auto brightness, launching Snote causes the screen to become much brighter when it's launched. Anybody else have this problem?
This is so irritating. It has hurt my eyes so many times. I wish that someone here fixes this ASAP. It just shoots the brightness to the maximum.

My S Note got this bug after updating the firmware. Also, S Note now has a scroll bar that I hated because it is touch sensitive and my hands always touches it accidentally. Gone also is the option to hide the sNote toolbar. My note was perfect before the update and now has this irritating bugs in s note.
Please help me if you find the solution.
Regards
I've noticed this on mine as well. Except I think that s note records what the screen brightness was when you last closed it, and will override your current brightness level with this stored one whenever you open it up.

Based on the way I take notes I actually like it. Some other folks here have made similar comments. The easy solution would be to provide a toggle in S-Note's settings so the feature could be turned off by those that don't like it. Samsung sold 2MM Note 10.1’s in two months. The odds of all 2MM purchasers using their devices the same way and wanting the same thing features wise is pretty slim.
I didn't have this problem until a couple of days ago. I fixed it by using the display brightness app. It basically manually overrides the android brightness so the brightness settings persist even when opening a note.

This works great, thanks!!
I wonder if Velis Auto Brightness can fix that.
OK, so I was getting really annoyed with this, but realised it happens in apps other than s-note (for me at least). especially when I'm using apps in portrait mode...
I even switched off auto brightness & used "lux auto brightness" thinking this might address the problem -- it doesn;t.
However for me the brightness dimming is caused by my hand/pen/anything getting close to the proximity sensor on the device (the hole top centre to the left). Go near there and within a second the screen dims. Move away it's normal.
On my S3 I seem to remember the proximity sensor could be disabled on ICS - but no option on Jellybean
Of course having the samsung logo the same side of the screen in portrait mode as your "handiness" helps too -- that way your hand is less likely to go near the proximity sensor.... this is my current "fix"
Ideas on sw configuration?
Here is a fix to increase sensitivity http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027476
Does you Nexus 4 touch screen not seem as sensitive as galaxy nexus? On mine it's not sensitive to light touches.
When I first bought the phone I had trouble pulling down the notification drawer, but dismissed it because I thought I touched under the screen. However, in the Gmail app today trying to click 'show pictures in message' it wouldn't register my touch as I do it really quick when I open a message. Also, the keyboard misses s few letters if I don't press harder on the screen.
I tested it by placing my finger on the screen very lightly but still feeling the screen on my finger and no touches registered until I pressed down harder. My Galaxy Nexus screen on the other hand is so sensitive, that before I even feel the screen it registers a touch.
Also, tested it on multi touch tester app and light touches wouldn't register.
Anyone else having this issue or is it just me?

I don't understand why they wouldn't make sure to get this right (lg). Missing taps especially when typing is extremely annoying.
The Galaxy Nexus actually experienced an intermittent bug (pre 4.2) that decreased the screen sensitivity tempoarily. Details here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576739
You can view the pressure by going to Settings -> Developer Options -> turn on Pointer Location. This will allow you to see the Prs of each tap in your status bar. Normally your lightest taps that register will show anywhere from 0.28 to 0.32. However, after this bug is activated, you will mostly get values over 0.40 for your light taps. This is actually a very noticeable increase, especially when trying to type quickly.

That's awful. People were noticing that values over .40 (for lightest taps) were noticeable when typing (me being one of them). This means the nexus 4 is even less sensitive than the galaxy nexus when the bug was present!!
I really hope this can be addressed in an update, but I'm worried that it's a hardware issue. Every manufacturer needs to use the iPhone as a standard regarding screen sensitivity...

I attempted to write an app to do this a long time ago. If its app-based like that, it needs to keep at least a partial wakelock on the phone to "listen" for the knock knock.
My guess is, on a multi-core CPU like the G2 has, they are turning off all but one core and putting that one core in the lowest MHz it will run, just to "listen" for the knock knock. Not app-based, but kernel based (like PGM). Clearly this doesnt use very much battery at all, as judged by the stellar battery life people have been reporting and that Ive seen on my own G2.

Edit:
The software platform is Android 4.2.2, and atop that is LG’s skin. LG has added a bunch of new features to its skinned Android experience, although its visual themeing remains essentially unchanged. Double tap to turn on and off uses the built in accelerometer to wake the phone up or turn it off – you just double tap quickly on the device when it’s in an off state to turn it on, and double tap quickly on a blank part of the display or status bar to turn it off. I don’t have a problem getting my index finger to the raised power button, but this is obviously an accommodation just in case that’s difficult.

I lose about 1% battery every 3-4 hours when idle the whole time so while it may consume more battery the amount lost doesn't matter to me since idle drain is still hardly anything.

I'm pretty sure it's NOT the accelerometer.
I tried it, and it even works with the slightest touch I can do. I hardly touched it at all. Can't believe, that there was any motion.
Furthermore it doesn't work when knocking with my fingernail or any other thing.
So I think, it really works by touch-recognition by the display.

you are right. it's definitely the touch screen waiting for the touches.
just try it on the edges on the screen - still works. next to the edges - doesn't work.
There's this post that I read somewhere from HardwareZone:
Not too sure if this is a solution, my imagination or simply I have gotten perfect overnight on using the KnockON feature but the insensitivity issue, that many and myself, have been facing is now gone - since last night, after I performed the following tests on my G2. (Yes, thses are merely TESTS, so wasn't expecting much..)
I got my set on the 26/9/13 and until last night this function got rather spot-on accurate and is not behaving in that erratic manner any more - at least for me. Here are the steps :
First Test
- Key in 3845#*802# on your phone dial.
- HW Device Test > Touch Test > Multi Touch Test
At this point, drag your finger across the screen from corner-to-corner and when your done. Press Volume-Up key once to exit.
Second Test
- From the same menu select "Touch Sensing Test 7*12"
- Tap in every box as many times as you want and on the red text as well at the bottom of the screen.
- Press Volume-Up Once to see result
- Press Volume-up again to Exit
- Finally, to exit the whole menu just use "return" soft key.
Once again, I like to highlight as strange as it may sound the above method has worked for me. And if not, then something definitely has. Do take note, Rockwell screen protector is still on and lastly, please do share your findings.

I tried it and strangely this seems to work. I can't tell if it's placebo but now I'm a hell lot more confident that my phone will wake up at the first pair of knocks.
Also, this is definitely true for me:
The knock on is 100% effective the first try when my phone is lying flat on my desk OR vertical on a car mount. In fact, these are the only 2 instances where I actually use KnockON. When I hold my phone, I naturally use the power button. Yes, I still do have probs with knockON when I use my thumb to wake it up while holding the phone.
3845#*802# did nothing for me. No menu.
There are apk for the knock on feature. But I'm sure there are libs and services involved

I think it's a combination of low power states enabled for the CPU & digitizer, and a kernel level wakelock. Essential's firmware probably doesn't have that included.

It's actually enabled by having the screen and its touch layer on a separate power rail to allow one to be powered on without sending power to another, this allows it to use very little power and work on some phones but use a considerable amount on others (like the PH-1)

Ok, thanks for the info. I'm guessing the PH-1 doesn't have separate power for the screen and touch layer, thus the high power consumption if we use tap to wake.
I guess a follow up question is does anyone make a battery case for the PH-1? I guess I would be ok with the power consumption if I can get a battery case with 5500mah, that should allow the phone to last a full day even with tap to wake.
Essential have "lift to check phone" menu, maybe for replace doble tap to wake menu ?
I guess if this menu is enabled will make more battery drain.

This is actually the ONLY way double tap to wake works...
If you wake the phone into doze mode... With lift to wake... You can then double tap the screen to wake it up...
So I hypothesize that if you were to use one of the AoD hacks... If they even work on this device... You could probably have double tap to wake

There's a way to do things and then there's a hacked together way to do things. You can make a lot of crap work, doesn't mean it works the best way.
I specifically asked @flar2 about this. Its totally possible if enabled in the kernel, but kills battery. Thats all.

No kidding... I get sick of idiotic apologists making up reasons for no tap to wake without real proven facts. First they come up with BS like "it uses too much power" waah waah! Then they come up with BS aboout how the hardware doesn't support it.
I don't have a PH-1 screen assembly, but just because there is one ribbon cable connecting it to the phone, doesn't mean that the screen and digitizer use the same power rail. Plenty of phones use tap to wake without any appreciable battery drain.

To quote a movie...
It's not an excuse not to have the feature available. I'm a big boy, I can decide how I want to drain my battery. Don't need anyone making choices for me.

Haha nice quote, great film. Then i would say go for it, i would use uber toolchain to compile a kernel with the DT2W.

I don't think the amount of cables has anything to do with the power distribution for the screen. You want DT2W? Make it happen.
Edit: also nobody said it wasn't possible, this thread wasn't full of BS until people came in spouting nonsense about how someone else supposedly said it "doesn't support it" acting as if that's the reason it hasn't been done yet on this device.
