No software, but these are he essentials
Apktool
7zip/WINrar
GIMP/Photoshop/Paint.net
General idea where things are at
I Mean, the Stausbar and dropdown images are easy. Wouldn't make me long to do that. But a full theme, it's ridiculous how long it takes. Things are so different from the S3 too. I'm not even close to being done with mine lol.

Yeah of course. Lemme track one down for ya now, u first you need to DL the Android Sdk and Java JDK. But that stuff may be part of the Guide that I'm looking for. Hang tight!
I always liked this guide for ADB. Setting up he system variables is very important. That where the PATH comes into play with ADB.
http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-set-up-android-adb-and-fastboot-on-windows-tutorial/
Take a read here for apktool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2213985
I must warn you, with our devices there are work arounds with a bunch of system apps and framework as well. Before you jump n with both feet, I'd do a bunch of reading as you go along. I mean read abut everything.
How to properly edit .9 PNGs
Xmls
Smali
And such......
But once you get the android Sdk installed and apktool (make sure you extract all 3 files to your Windows directory) the easiest for me to start with was the systemui.apk. That's where you'll find the statusbar Icons, and toggles, dropdown, and such. I could keep going, and going lol but I sure don't have the time for tht lol. There are a TON of amazing Guides out there. I'm still a novice myself, but there's always something to learn. Hope this helps ya out a bit

Yeah it is super overwhelming alot of the times. Unfortunately for myself, Instead of focusing on one task at a time, i try to do 6 or 7 at a time. Dont do that lol, cause you'll stress out. I don't mind admitting that:thumbup:
But if i were you, you already have the SDK and I'm assuming ADB all set. Extract the 3 necessary files for apktool. Rip my SystemUI.apk from my ICS theme, and see what I edited. Look at the titles. Same may look and sound familiar and most will boggle yur mind. Take all those images from drawable-xxhdpi and put them in a new folder. Grab a Fresh systemui.apk from a stock ROM and decompile it. Take my images and start changing the colors. Be careful of the .9 images. You'll see the Black ticks on the outside of them. Make sure they don't get touched, or the apk won't compile, and if it does things will not look right or even FC.
This is where I started, with the systemui.apk. But Read, Read, read. It'd the best way to learn. I could help with the basics, and some other things, but i still bug the he'll out of other themers. Mainly Dazednconfused and Rompnit, but there super cool about it. They love that they can give back. Anyway, im turning this into a Guide/Novel haha.... You can hit menus on Gtalk if ya need to. Porting a theme is also a great way to learn the ins and outs of theming.

[DIY]Boot to Gecko (3G/4G)

This site gives pretty nice instructions on how to make the build yourself
I would make it, but I don't have a large enough hard drive
Right now it's slow and in early alpha, Hardware Acceleration doesn't work as of now.
So until someone can dump the IMG files, this is how it's done.

A friend of mine is right now for the 4G. Let's see how this works..
the result file should be .img files that have to be flashed via fastboot.
So everything will be erased, recoveries, ROM's and your SDCARD/eMMC
Does it wipe SD card?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
He did say sdcard, so yeah.... it will be the same as when you rooted your phone for the first time. Same system.

I remember reading about this awhile back and wanting it on our phones.. I have a pretty decent size harddrive, I can help with some things if needed
Im digging in and getting a build going. I wanna play with this haha

My friend is currently trying to get a version that we can flash, because normally it just transfers straight from adb. He has to fix permissions and symlinks of the dump. Hopefully if everything goes right we should have a build by tonight
I would really appreciate this, been wanting to try it out, but don't have a PC running linux now.
Interesting. If I get time I might setup Ubuntu in Virtual Box and give it a try.
I'm so trying this when it's fully functional, even if I have to wait a long time.
Whoever is in charge of the UI is great at what they do, it's really nice looking. Especially the dialer.
Wow , I find this thread now ... I feel stupid for posting my thread now .. Alright Everything is Done , but one question ... If I flash this will clockworkmod go away, or anything from my memory ? like all my music and etc ... Just need to get things clear

what happened to the thread you posted with the precompiled zip?? I was able to pull it up on google cache, but it's deleted from XDA for some reason.
was there an issue with the build that caused it to get pulled?? I'd like to try it out since I've already got your zip.

I'd give real money for....

So I've just about got my continuum set the way I want it... For now anyway. There are two things I'm missing that I'd like to have though, the AOSP lock screen and the extra power off options. Both are in TB's Everything mod, unfortunately when I use that I have two apps that break, one of them I need for work. Right now I'm running Ciscogee's deodexed Ec09 and ICS theme. I'm hoping someone would be willing and able to whip me up a zip with those. I would be happy to buy you and a friend's Friday night beverage of choice.

sucky, im pretty sick right now.
but just to clearify:
You would like to see aosp lock screen and reboot options added to my current inital ics theme?
i will clean up some noob themeing mistakes in my theme while im in there (i noticed them as i was themeing another device).
anything else u would like to see?
The only other things that really stick out to me are:
Center the date and time in the ticker,
Remove the time from the notification bar... Kinda redundant on a continuum.
BUT... I know how it is with kids and school/work, and I know you're working on the kernel, so if you can't get to this, its all good.
Off topic: ever had any issues with the ticker WB not refreshing? Pretty sure it's something on my end, but it will never update... Even if I try a manual refresh.

The ticker stuff is trailblazers department. As well as time in date in settings. Those might take more time since I used his mod to theme on top of on those.
Ill see what I can do.
Ps
The WB won't update due to clearing lvl 2 ram. I believe

If you don't even know how to search for the needed info yourself without asking, you've got ZERO chance of making the "best ROM".
Most "developers" are just "modding" or replacing stuff with winzip. If you like stock but with some other theme and couple of mods this is your way togo. I myself am not very fond of this method an skip these roms. Personally im keeping my note stock till an official MIUI or CM rom arrives.

Installing apps from old ROMs lying around

Hey all,
I'm new to Android but I'm a programmer so I usually learn pretty quick. This is my first post on XDA so be gentle!
I am not sure if everyone knows this or not, but I only figured it out today so I said I'd share:
If you are looking for an app or an apk, eg stock APK, you can sometimes install from an old ROM if you kept the zip file lying around.
For example in my case I had just flashed a new ROM which didn't come with S Voice so I unzipped one of my old ROMs and did an apk search of the extracted files on my PC. In this case SVoice was called talkback.apk .
Next I just connected my phone to the PC using hotspot on LAN in Root Explorer, found the apk, and just clicked on it to install.
This worked for all the apk's I tried (4-5) except S Memo.
Not sure if this will help anyone, but its a handy way to customize a ROM that you like, if it doesen't come with all the apps you want. This may work with galleries/cameras/music players etc, but I haven't tried it yet..
Seriously....
Don't you think this is common sense?
