Camera not working? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have had this phone for 5 days now. Everything has been fine but today the camera has randomly stopped working.
When I load the camera app it just shows a black screen with all the usual camera logos.
I have tried accessing the camera from facebook app and its the same. I have also tried from snapchat and in snapchat the front camera works but when I switch to back the app almost locks up.
I have tried restarting the phone several times. I have force closed the camera apk and wiped the cache.
Does this sound like a hardware fault?

Sounds like it, yes. If you are getting no picture from the camera with multiple apps, it must be a hardware fault. Instead of trying to fix the problem yourself, just return the phone under warranty and let Samsung fix it. I'll assume you're still stock? You didn't specify this.

Yes it is still stock.
I phoned up phones4u coz thats where I got the phone from. I have insurance with them so if the phone is ever faulty I get a brand new sealed unit instead of it being repaired.
They advised me first to try a factory reset incase there is a corrupt driver. If not I take it back this afternoon and they will give me a brand new one

[Q] Galaxy S4 - reboot launching camera from lockscreen

I have a weird 'bug' that has been occurring randomly. When I launch the camera using the locksreen widget. App start, camera shows no image and bam, reboot. After they reboot, doing the same thing doesn't cause a reboot. Weird. Anyone else have this 'bug:?

From the other tread by samir_a
Well it happens after the phone restarts it should work not something you should worry about since the processor is completely new there will be lots of bugs you just need to live it for few months before they are sorted out

I see this about 50% of the time I launch the camera from the the home screen. I haven't seen it yet when I launch the camera from the lock screen.
I also have this problem after the update whenever I launch the camera not only from the lock screen.
Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk 2
Happening here too, works after reboot though. Think its got something to do with device heat? Cause the other day the cam app force closed cause device was too hot -_-
I am facing this problem but not just open from the lock screen. It happens even when I open other camera app.
And the camera start up time is way too slow compared to my previous Android phones.
auto reboot

Agreed ! Mine is the same... When I launch the camera in whatsapp, it will 100% reboot !
A lot of people got this problem I got it too on my gt-i9500
Go to developer options and change "limit background processes" to 4. It should work.

my s4 (i9500) has rebooted couple of times whenever I open camera app. (running latest firmware)
I'm also experiencing the same problems, also, sometimes when i tap the take picture button it won't take a picture regardless of how many times I tap the button.
Lets hope update comes soon too fix this .. its getting anoying
Thank god I'm not alone on this. I thought I had a bad unit. And yeah, on mine too it started after the update. It was fine before. It's less frequent now as I wake the phone, launch something else before going to the camera. Avoids an unnecessary reboot. But the camera launch lag is bad. Launching the camera on my S3 was much, much faster.
have the same issue..

This actually worked for me, I haven't experienced any restarts since I limited the background processes. Launching the camera is still laggy though.

Remember if you reboot, the developer options changes to standard. So make sure it's on 4 processers and see if it restars again..

Black lines on the camera?

Just wondering if any one else has experienced this problem where occasionally black lines appear across the screen on the camera? Seems like a battery problem to me.. any ideas?
*You can see it the most just after I take a picture

I couldnt see any black lines in the video
Watch it again maybe it was hard to see if you're viewing the video from a phone because of the orientation on YouTube

Compare these 2 screenshots taken with a half a second gap in between( look at the edges of the screen)
Only seems to do it on the Samsung camera app, I downloaded jb camera from playstore and no problems there but the camera sucks in comparison

That looks remarkably like Interlacing. Using a US model, by any chance?
It's probably just the software re-rendering the live view.

It's the European model I bought it within the UK no one else seems to be having the same problem, it totally ruins video capturing as it shows on the videos :/

And it doesn't happen on other camera apps? That's peculiar.
Have you tried emptying the data and cache of the camera app? Cleared the phone cache? Factory reset?

All of the above, plus do you have any pending software updates available to you? Does it do it everywhere you go? I thought I had a problem with my N2 camera once, but it was actually the florescent lighting in the room.

Omg i just cleared the data/cache in applications manager and then started the camera up again and it's perfect no sign of any more black lines /flickering!
Don't understand how but it worked thanks!

I see the lines in the original video! Can I ask what did you use to take that video of the screen? I'm still waiting on the AT&T version, but as soon as it gets in, I'll be looking for that issue as well. The Camera app is probably the most important to me.

My LED Flash bulb went out...

Disappointed in the quality. I'm 90% sure it's physically out, but let's see if there's any way to troubleshoot.
Basically, was working fine initially, but it is not something I often use camera/camera flash. I found a thread about the hidden "torchlight" setting so that holding up on the volume when the screen is off turns on the light of X amount of seconds. It was working fine, but then yesterday I saw that it wasn't working.
I didn't think much of it, maybe some app I downloaded caused a conflict. But I just tried it with the camera flash and other flashlight apps and I get no light at all.
Any suggestions? Or am I going to have to deal with VZW.
Had the same problem. Camera flash and flashlight app stopped working. Tried different apps no help. Rebooted the phone and all is working now. Mine is still stock, not rooted

That did it, thanks. Still wonder why this happened though
Idk but don't get me wrong I came from a Note2 to the Note 3 and I absolutely love this phone but there's quite a few little bugs I've noticed. We definitely need a software update! Idk if u guys experienced it yet but a few times now I had all my apps that were in folders I made just get completely thrown out of them. At first I thought it was just with 3rd party launchers but then it happened once with TW too. I am not rooted either.

I believe there has been a small software update to the Canadian and European note 3's. We should get that soon enough. Overall though a great phone

Camera problems!!!

Hi, im just new here and I've been having problemswith my s4. Nope i ddidn't root it. The camera is acting strange lately. Sometimes the camera stops and the screen just freezes. Here are the examples of the problems below
1st problem.
I took this picture in a dark room just after the camera freezed. This is a bit weirddd.
Second problem is that some of the pictures appear in half or some parts are erased. Just like these two pictures. I dunno what caused this problm. It is ANNOYING because it's like corrupting my pictures.
I Need help. Please looking forward to your answers.

Did you drop your phone recently?
Try to update the frameware using "Kies". if it didn't help, its probably hardware issue, return it to the seller.
Before i even dropped it it's already like that. and no i dont want to buy a replacement for the rear camera cos i only bought this phone for like a month ago

If the live image on screen looks OK I would say you probably have a faulty SD card.
Do you store images on ext SD? If so change the storage location to internal SD and see if it still happens. Or vise versa.
Maybe try backing up data and formating internal or ext SD to see if it helps.

Camera freezes and reboot

This happens when I focus on an object with the flash enabled .after taking the picture when it again auto focuses it gives a crackling sound and freezes and soon after the phone reboots itself .
This is so frustrating. Lollipop has arrived but still this bug is living .

My wife's N4 has this exact same issue, I was able to reproduce the issue while running logcat and nothing really popped out at me. I'm going to be looking further into it.
