For non-Nexus devices I'd say go for the naked drivers, absolutely, but for Nexus devices the Google ones do the job fine IMO seeing as they're designed for them!

Need Help Rooting, Really Confused!

Guys I have Nexus S i9020T runnig Android version 2.3.4, Baseband version I9020XXKD1, Build number GRJ22. I have looked around a lot and am confused on how to root my phone, is there any simple way of rooting my phone with super user? I run a very old PC so installing the sdk is pretty hard, so could anyone give me a step by step simple tutorial? This is my first Android phone and am a complete noob at this
Did you read the sticky yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
It's a step-by-step tutorial and exactly how you should do it.
The SDK shouldn't really be a strain for your PC.
Good luck,
Greetz
You don't need the entire SDK. Grab PDAnet USB divers and then choose to download just the 2.3.3 SDK and Google USB drivers from the SDK. Worked fine for me this way. You don't need all the stuff the SDK wants to install by default.

Yes that guide works regardless of what Android version you're using because Android version is not a factor. It's the bootloader.
No, it is impossible to root without the SDK because you have to unlock the bootloader using the SDK. You won't get stuck at the Google screen. People are messing up because they're unable to follow instructions.

I've helped people in this topic many times.
The easiest way I can say is to first download the Android SDK listed in that step-by-step thread. It's not that difficult and you shouldn't be scared to do it. Unless you're flashing something for another model of the phone (such as NS4G) everything should be fixable.
Download http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html to your respective OS. If its for windows, I know it says recommended for exe but I prefer using the .zip version of it. So download that first if you haven't already.

Don't know why you're downloading the JDK but okay. Extract it and rename the folder android-sdk-windows-r12 to /sdk/ and place it on the root of your C drive. So it'd be located in C:\sdk\
You need to put your phone into bootloader mode (while phone is off; VOL UP + Power) while plugged in. Do what the instructions say and set up the drivers.
The step-by-step guide is self-explanatory. I don't really want to paraphrase what the guide says because it's pretty simple. Follow the guide you linked earlier and tell me if you experience any problems or have problems understanding what is being asked.
Edit: In part 2, where it says:
switch to the directory where you downloaded & unzipped the ..\android-sdk-windows\tools

download: http://www.mediafire.com/?y3is5c9n5fi1sd6 instead
when you finish downloading it, place it in C:\sdk\tools\
and type:

This is a newer version of the Recovery and it should function better.

Unfortunately there is a bug with the windows sdk that makes developing on some phones a pain in the a##, because it fails to connect to the phone so you can't deploy your app to test it (could be ok with the a500 - I haven't tried in windows). I would suggest you install linux on a vm and use that instead. There is no need for drivers with linux and everything works flawlessly. I'm not trying to "convert" you into using linux or anything - the bug is Google's fault (not MS) and they are aware of it but don't seem to care. I installed a linux vm just for developement and use windows for everything else that can't be done on the iconia.

[Tool][Windows]Thunderbolt Auto-Unrooter

Outdated! Use the thunderbolt tool here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703455
This is an open-source tool that automatically unroots your thunderbolt.
NOTICE: This is designed for people who used REVOLUTIONARY to root, but works fine with other methods.
Great for people not comfortable with adb or fastboot commands, or people who just want everything in one place and made easy.
*THIS WILL WIPE ALL DATA, BE WARNED*
This tool will:
Install the Fastboot drivers for you (If needed)
Unroot in one reboot
This would most likely be used for people that need a warranty replacement.
HUGE thanks to AndroidGod on ThunderboltForums for support, patience, advice, TOTALLY RISKING HIS THUNDERBOLT for testing, and simply being cool.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check the MD5 Sum of this. It is a very large (~450 MB) file.
PLEASE follow ALL instructions in the program.
I am NOT responsible for any damages. (Standard disclaimer)
FILE: Download UnrootV3.zip
MD5 sum is on the download page.
Program has integrated OTA updates! No new releases!
If you have any questions or run in to any issues feel free to add me on GTalk: [email protected] . I can reply from about 3:30-10:00 PM EST. If it is outside that time, you can still ask, but there might be a late reply. If you don't have a gmail account, you can just email me at that address.
