Hi bought nook simple touch glow
Want to know what you Dev and users recommend here re root it or not
Where can I get books for kids 0-5 from the net free to download
Thanks
Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org) has several thousand public domain books, including many old reading primers. My kids and I have enjoyed the "Old Mother West Wind" series by Thornton W. Burgess, and are currently engrossed in the Tarzan and John Carter books by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
I have also had some luck with www.epubbooks.com, and the Library of Congress digital collection (www.read.gov). The Nook store itself used to have a few good free kids' titles, but they seem to have vanished...
Here's a few more from Gutenberg:
Poems Every Child Should Know_by_Mary E. Burt__pg16436-images.epub
Required Poems for Reading and Memorizing_by_Anonymous__pg10131.epub
Rippling Rhymes_by_Walt Mason__pg22692-images.epub
The Children's Garland from the Best Poets_by_Coventry Patmore__pg27441-images.epub
---------------------------
The Red Room by H. G. Wells__pg23218.epub
The Sea Lady by H. G. Wells__pg35920-images.epub
The World Set Free by H. G. Wells__pg1059.epub
When the Sleeper Wakes by H. G. Wells__pg775.epub
Tales of Space and Time by H. G. Wells__pg27365-images [ss].epub
The Door in the Wall and Other Stories by H. G. Wells__pg456 [ss].epub
Twelve Stories and a Dream by H. G. Wells__pg1743 [ss].epub
If your kids have a library card, all of the UK and US libraries seem to use the Overdrive e-lending system which lets you DL DRM protected ePub and pdf books - Which helpfully work really well with our Nooks!
(For my local library anyway) You won't get every book you could borrow in hard copy (I could only find 4-5 Michael Morpurgo books available to borrow) - and the online search is a bit crap (searching "robert louis stevenson" turns up all authors with a "obert", or a "Louis" or a "Stevenson" in their name) so you'll have to be content with browsing the children's books rather than diving in by sub-genre or author but (particularly for kids) this will still save you an absolute fortune. If the kids really like something you don't mind buying it but if they can borrow 4-5 current ebooks at a time then its a huge bonus.
Thanks everybody will have a look this weekend

First thing, go to the Overdrive site ( www.overdrive.com ) and check to see if a library you have a card at is a participating one. If so, choose it from the search results and go to the Overdrive sub site for that library/ring of libraries. Sign in process may be different for different rings, but for my local one you choose the local library and type your library card number as part of the sign in process. After that you'll need to authorise both the account and the Nook to Adobe Digital Editions (authorising Nook may not be required if you root and install the Overdrive app or strip the DRM from the book) and you should be able to figure it out from there
My library unfortunately is not a part of this

Could anyone point me in the direction of a good ebook resource, cheaper the better or preferably free, for the HD2 please? I recently bought a couple from the WH Smith ebook site. While I admit they were a very good read, they were also very expensive. I've tried Project Gothenburg, their books aren't to my taste I'm afraid, I'm not into classical literature. I just prefer a straight forward, preferably true, read i.e non-fiction, auto-biographies, true crime etc.
By the way, I use the MobiReader software, although I'm thinking of changing this as it's not perfect on the HD2. Or either I'm not using it correctly??
I would appreciate any pointers please on both points.
Thx.
Gutenberg
Here's the mother of all free online libraries:
http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page
I also use ereader.com a lot, and have started to use the Barnes and Noble client that came on my US version. The cab file is around since it gets updated when you first start it, so if you want it let me know if your phone didn't have it.

Thx for the reply, appreciate it. As I stated in my thread, I'd already looked at the gutenberg website and their books weren't for me. I'm not really into classical literature. Thanks all the same tho.
I'm absolutely staggered at some of the prices we're expected to pay for an ebook, an ebook for gods sake! It's not even a real book with pages and a cover that sits nicely on your bookshelf!!!
I've just looked on several uk based websites and I'm astounded at the prices!
For instance, a cricketing hero of mine, his auto-biography in ebook format is over £17!! What??!! Ryan Giggs auto is £9+! I actually purchased this book (proper) around 18 months ago and I think I paid £6.99.
What's going on? Something is very, very wrong indeed!
There is a new free Kindle version in the Market for Android.
I installed it, and I was thinking about buying a book to give it a try.
But in the Amazon store, there is a list: This item works for so and so and so, and lists most Kindles, except for Android. So I didn't buy it.
Maybe it would work, maybe it's just that they need to update their list of devices.
Has somebody used this application already?
Thanks.
I'd go try it on a free book first, and see if it'll sync over. I know a previous book I bought through the kindle store made it over just fine so I don't see why it wouldn't work...

Look up anything in the public domain. I think 20000 leagues under the sea, the adventures of sherlock holmes, that stuff..
it should all be free (was for me)
BTW - If a book lists nearly every device but left out Android, I'd bet a fair sum of money that's only because their website guys havn't updated the pages to included Kindle for Android. Again, not promising, but I'd bet thats what happened. They just need a few days to make sure everything is up to date and reflects the existence of Kindle for Android.
thanks all, I'll try.
Just use calibre to convert and book and use any book reader !
I searched "public domain". I found some $0.00 books. I selected one. they asked me for my credit card info, even though it's free. It downloaded it in a couple of seconds.
It looks great, a little bright to read, but I can adjust it.
thanks.
Aldiko Book Reader is free and it has a few free books, not sure if there is a way to save them and open them in Kindle, but it might be worth looking into.
Kindle app for Android works great and it syncs back with the Kindle. I just got a Kindle yesterday and had been reading like crazy... then I did a search for Kindle Android on Google and noticed they launched the app... downloaded it and it picked up right where I left off in my book. It puts all your books in the archive and downloads them when you decide to read one.
I just wish that pinch to zoom worked... or there was a zoom feature on the Kindle for pages that have diagrams and such...
One annoying thing - it locks the backlight at MAXIMUM brightness. Battery killer, hot phone, and too bright...
I used kindle extensively on my ipod touch and was anticipating the release of this app on android. After I installed, all my books showed up on my phone and I dl'd the last one I was reading and it synced up just fine and put me right where I left off on my ipod. I don't mind using some of the other free apps, but when I'm not at home and finish a book on the go it's kind of a drag to not have anything till I get home to convert another book to use on one of the other apps. With kindle, it's soo easy to just get another book off of the kindle store and have it right there on the phone with no conversion, of course everything comes with a price

Most if not all of the books in the Aldiko E-Book app are free, FYI

Are you talking about Amazon's/Kindle's "Whispersync?" It's supposed to support the Android app- I guess that info you saw was just not updated as the Android app was released...
That's my two cents
Its actually cheaper for Amazon to have people use devices besides the Kindle for their book purchases and downloads so they are trying to expand to as many devices and platforms as possible. I'm going to grab their PC app today and see if I can actually see the graphics in my books.

Opened up the Readers Hub today, just to check if it was working yet, and was welcomed by two little green 'install' buttons on both the magazines and newspapers option. These buttons open up a Samsung modified app installer, and now...it's all working.
This is in Switzerland, running an unbranded unlocked 16GB SGT on Swisscom Liberty Grande contract.
EDIT: Ok, my excitement is growing less by the minute. While it works nicely, it seems there's no free content, neither in Newspapers nor in Zinio. Even the free papers that you can pick up at every bus stop around here (20Minuten) want to charge you. Not interested in paying for news when I can just use the the browser to read the online version for free.
EDIT 2: Right, it seems when you go through the Zinio website there's an option to search for free issues, and there's quite a few good ones there. No such option on PressDisplay however.
hm, still waitin...buy the way tnx for report
Just checked mine here in the UK and was greeted with the install buttons
Thanks for the heads up.

Just showed up for me today in Australia too.
Installed and bought a few issues through Zinio already.
Running well so far except for one of my subscriptions having problems downloading.
Got to laugh, daily star which costs around 35 pence or maybe less for a hard copy is costing 99 pence per issue. Not tempted to go digital at that price, just going to do the usual and fire up the car on a morning and buy it

Zinio is great value, as a UK magazine reader being able to subscribe to US versions of magazines for around $10 for a years subscription is superb value to me! (They look great on my iPad, hoping they look just as good on my RoadWarrior SGT!)
With PressReader, if you have an online subscription to The Times (about £9 a month) you can download the Daily and Sunday editions (+All the extra magazines), perfect for my commute!
The readers hub was a huge deciding factor for me in buying a SGT, Im looking forward to trying it out once I get home today!
i have the tmobile tab and i don't even see the readers hub app. How can I get it?
too bad zinio is mostly usless for non-english ppl. I don't get why we get kobo and zinio but no media hub in europe.

Also in the UK. Works fine
PS: free samples can be added to your Zinio account via the web interface. Then use the app to read the content.
Note: By the way, my Galaxy Tab is flashed with the latest P1000XWJK1 firmware (November 2010). I don't think this would make a difference, as the Samsung App Market functions normally (I see 2 apps in there).
WTH? So I just lost access to my FHM subscription on the galaxy tab. Even the issue that I had downloaded earlier today had magically vanished.
Can't even see similar magazines through the tab any more.
I hope this is isn't some kind of iPad compatibility issue... What with it being two competing devices with different philosophical views on censorship.
can someone post the zinio apk. in my hub, i installed the kobo one
Here in Finland in Tab there is Readers hub with PressDisplay, Kobo and Zinio.
PressDisplay gave some freebies.
In Kobo there is about 200 free books to choose.
Zinio, no freebies.
About PressDisplay; the biggest newspaper in Finland, Helsingin Sanomat is missing, only 11 smaller ones available. And yes, those free trainstation-takeaway-b****-publications cost also 0,99€ -no thanks.
First I was exited, but not any more. Newsroom is still my killer app.
Greediness kills a lot good ideas.
PressDisplay and Zinio now online in the Philippines. Finally!!!!

You will need the .apk files for those programs.
If the generous international users can dump their .apk files for us Americans, it would be greatly appreaciated. Sharing is caring.

Hello guys.
Wich would you consider to be the best office document editing app (especially for excell files) out there on the market, regardless of price?
Best MS compatibility for ME!!
QuickOffice HD- best compatibility I've found - about £9 in the market.
Only downside is that the app only accesses the internal memory (SDCard) not any external memory.
Hope someone can show me how soon.....
I use docs to go.there are several none out there that is great at everything
Another options get a Hotmail account. Windows live.they have a cloud service you store documents with them and can edit and create Ms documents but it requires data services
I found Polaris Office to be the best. You can even have it using all your favorite fonts if you put them in system/fonts.
Quickoffice HD is second best since it does miss proper size/alignments in ppt.
The rest can't even get page margins right, no use wasting your time for now.
I am currently on my quest to fin the perfect office app as well. I mainly bought my Iconia for college so I need an app to be able to write papers with. I bought QuickOffice HD and yeah you can change the font, align text and font size, but you can't really do much else. You can't resize margins, can't edit or insert headers, can't even I out bullets! All of these crucial features for writting your MLA paper. I even tried importing a document that already had a header in it and you can see the header but you can't edit it.
I gave DocsToGo a shot and it seemed more featured packed with the paragraph edit and bullet input options, but I didn't go too far I depth with it since it was only the trial.

I'll have to give this one a try will report back!
polaris office is the very best IMO
You guys can apply for the beta for softmaker. I won't give more details, it's nothing to be curious about unless you really want to help. It is laggy and unusable on tablets and the UI is not yet optimized, but it can display the page perfectly, paragraphs columns, everything and won't break the compatibility with MSoffice.
Polaris!
I have Polaris office but since I upgraded to android 3.1 I keep getting force close issues.

If you're rooted you can get USB Mount All, which can mount your external_sd under the internal one so any other app can access it. Works for me on QuickOffice HD and Docs to Go.

Yes, that's libre office. But Oracle has now donated OpenOffice back to the open source world (APACHE) and IBM has donated millions of lines of code to OpenOffice from its Symphony product, so I think this'll breathe new life into OpenOffice now. See

Hi all,
Found this earlier whilst trawling the tinter web:
http://blog.laptopmag.com/how-to-add-your-own-music-to-the-google-play-music-cloud
Only available in the States at the moment though! :crying:
Is there anything similar for us Brits??
I know about Dropbox etc. but this service looks so cool!
Thanks for looking.
If you've got the patience, sign up for an IPv6 address here and connect to the servers in north America.
Google prefers IPv6 so they will think you're in America and will show you all of their services. This also enables Movies, Magazines etc.
The process is not so simple, so if you're not technically minded it might not be for you. However if you set it up you also get the bonus that you can buy apps in dollars, which means things are cheaper.
Perhaps there's a guide here on XDA but I haven't checked since I didn't need it. Its worth the hassle.
You could always use the program called tor on a pc there is plenty of guides floating about on here
