Which rom is good for daily use?? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a question: I aim getting a new nexus 4 (by June 10) and I wanted to ask a few question. 1. Which color should I get. (Prefer black but open for suggestion) and 2. Which cm10.1/PAC/ SlimBean rom should I prefer??? Nightly builds would be ok but RC or weekly builds would be ok... I will flash it within a week of getting it. I will be getting this phone for primary use so basic calling function is needed

Every rom is good for daily use. Most rom's are rock solid and stable. Even the nightlys only have minor bugs. These are the advantages on nexus devices.
Get the black nexus. The only-back-white one looks kind of weird.

You have to decide on your own. You have to make that judgement call. When you get your phone, flash the ROM and see if you like it or not base on your wants.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

As above. Most are very stable. If you want a kind of stock android on steroids then CyanogenMod is great. Very professionally run team and the roms (even the nightlies) are smooth and without bugs. If you like customisation then AOKP, AOSPA or one of the derivatives are great. Also very smooth and solid but with more original features and you can customise just about anything.

Carbon Rom. Hands down.

Can anyone tell me the main differences between xylon rom and aokp? I'm really confused what to flash :S

I would vote for CyanogenMod or any derivative of it - find one that suits your needs regarding updates and features...

Only thing I dislike about cm is their refusal to put navigation bar resize.
Try carbon if you haven't yet. It's the best of all roms. It has features from cm, aokp, paranoid android. The latest alpha currently has paranoid androids halo feature. All while maintaining the best speed. Only complaint is that goo servers are slightly slow. So if you plan on giving the rom a try them look at the last couple pages for a mirror and you'll download the rom faster.

Would really help if anyone could explain this to me?

Any rom based off CyanogenMod is stable enough for daily use, Whether it be AOKP, ParanoidAndroid, PacMan etc.

Thanks for this great thread there should be a users feedback about every Rom ,to make things easy on other users,I will try the carbon myself and see what it looks like

They already have that... you just have to look in each thread and the last couple of pages would of give you a good reflection on what the rom is like. Some people on youtube do video reviews on the rom too.

Hi shortlisted PA and carbon. Which is fast and good for daily use??? Although being a nexus both are fully feature on this phone but is pa or carbon better in stability and phone calls and other things???? I will later try all roms but what should I begin with????? This would be my daily driver. Selected black.

After writing this i was checking for all roms and settled with downloading carbon and cm for now. Will check as soon as device comes and then decide. By the way, what is the actual free user available space on the device???

[Q] Custom rom for Nexus 4

Which one is better in terms of device performance and battery consumption ?
Cyanogenmod or Paranoid Android
In my experience they are both relatively the same battery and performance.

As is always the case in threads like this there is one answer.
Try them and see for yourself. The effectiveness of a ROM is usually a very personal thing based on how you use your phone.
Anyway where is the fun in only trying one ROM?

Cyanogenmod is the rom that mostly everyone bases their work/rom from. It's crazy stable for me, and battery life is really good. I'll use nothing other than CM.

To be honest, I hate backup/restore steps. As we know that installing a new ROM (in case of Nexus 4) means factory reset and complete wipe-up of the device.
One of the main objective of posting this query is to be save myself from this thing.

not true. aosp is what most base their roms on, even cm was first based on aosp. there is no best rom, only the rom that best suits YOUR needs. try them all out, find whats best for you. besides, for best performance and battery, you want to find the best kernel for your needs, not rom.

You only need to wipe on the first flash and after that 'dirty' flashing usually gives no issues (at least in my experience). Make a Titanium backup and you can restore your apps very quickly and easily (even faster using the Pro version).

[Opinion] Best optimized rom for gaming?

Hello! So I'm sure you've been asked this question before, but I'm curious to see some updated answers since there is a decent handful of roms available for the S4-1337 now.
I am very much an Android gamer, I've been using the sixaxis application with a Dual Shock 3 controller since the application was released; and have been hooking my phones up to TV's since I could. It's essentially my "gaming console".
Currently I'm not running any custom rom on my s4, it's just rooted and using xposed framework with wanam installed (for stock touchwiz customization).
I however have noticed that no matter what I do, I won't get the speed and frame rate I desire with the stock rom; as it's just too heavy on the phone. I'd like the opinions of other Android gamers here about what custom rom they find is best optimized for gaming and overclocking (if necessary). Generally something that's lite but has a lot of customization that I desire.
I currently am a devout player of the Modern Combat series, other games are touch and go once in awhile.
Thanks,
Branden.
I just want to give you a heads up, this might get closed down as "best for xxxxx" isn't allowed.
My suggestion to you is to flash a slimmed down ROM or a ROM thats well known and slim it down your self. Also, the stock Google edition base is a goof foundation. Don't forget kernel settings tweaks!

I don't really want to give out names as I don't love to play favorites but since your new.. I'd advise against CM/AOKP ROMs that are nightlies as I think they're not for casual gaming since commits change daily. @task650 tends to put out some stable choices for a ROM based on aosp. (Aokp).
For kernels I've found there is community favorites. Faux, chronic, ktoon. (No order). Try them out and see for yourself.

Official CM11-Nightlies for N7 flo

I am not a developer by any stretch. I posted here because I had nothing to do with this and take no credit. Moderators, feel free to delete or move, or re-word this. There are OFFICIAL CM11 Nightlies available and it should be known. I am a long time fan of CM Roms. I am surprised there isn't an Official Thread already.
Download ROM: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=flo
I am currently using Invisiblek's Gapps found here: http://www.invisiblek.org/gapps/
Obviously thank you to whomever is working on the Flo CM11 Official ROMS and the entire CM team. You guys are awesome!! I am not taking any credit whatsoever, just trying to get the word out!! Whomever the developer is that is actually working on this please make yourself known to get the recognition. I am excited and look forward to further builds!!!!
CM is the best!!!!!
Added bonus.. [4.4/4.4.x][PATCH] Qualcomm-optimized Dalvik & Bionic libraries
These really do work.. installed them on my VZW GS4 and also now on my N7 Flo for a performance boost.. Who needs ART? Link is for the OP, I had nothing to do with these either.
Antuntu: 24220 Quad: 9585 (on N7 Flo with 12/30 Nightly)
I have been CM fan since CM 6, it has been my absolute favourite rom on all my nexus devices.
UNTIL RECENTLY...........somehow they decided to stop using aosp and made their own code, it is incompatible with most of the kernels out there, leaving us with very few choices. =/
Also I find it a little odd that you are posting this after like 2 months lol.
Can anyone get otg to work?

I'm ruining cm11 m2 and I've been experiencing a few issues and I'm wondering if
they are happening to anyone else and if they are fixed in the latest nightlies
1. Random reboots(rare)
2. Keyboard weirdly unresponsive
3. 6th dockbar icon won't set.
4. Don't remember...
I haven't seen any issues like that so far. Will keep an eye out though.

I don't know whats happening to everybody..
really i think CM is overdoing it.. i can't remember the last great feature they added..
and they take a real long time to release a stable build.. maybe people decided to stay with
root stock rom and use the xposed framework with gravity box.. and maybe a custom kernel.
Last time I was running CM11 the audio would periodically freeze/buzz while watching videos. Can anyone confirm if this is still the case?

I think uoure right. Maybe people have some afraid to root their devices.
Im still like CM always did. Theyre the best in custom roms.
Lets keep this good topic live. Thank you all.
I'm actually surprised that this thread is this short :| been on cm11 just yesterday and i've encountered 1 lockup, dozens of audio/video glitches with mx player
The buzz noise is directly related to the kernel.
Flash glitches new kernel v121 or newer and it'll completely disappear.
Just fyi, there is maybe 1-2 that work on the devices, kinda a **** move to complain about stable releases. Just because it's goggles new x.y.z Doesn't even mean that piece of crap is actually stable.
With that said since day one of nightlies minus kernel buzz, it's been rock solid. WiFi only here though.
I'm using the 4-21 CM 11 nightly and it works great. ElementalX has a CAF kernel now which is a huge plus. I opted to try the beta Xposed Framework that is CM compatible and so far so good. I added Gravity Box as well to get a working PIE function as well as a few other extras. No complaints from me. CM 11 for Flo has come a long way.
Note: Trying Xposed and Gravity Box may or may not work for you when running this ROM. I recommend having a Nandroid backup in your recovery just in case you try them.
I don't know why but no caf kernels work with my official cm
I even tried aosp kernels with no luck

There are no ROMS here yet because the people who developed the device repo have not given the green light (since not everything is working yet, such as camera)
Please talk to them before you post anything, since last I checked I was asked NOT to post anything yet.
Plus bump is not out yet as well.
But trust me there are at least 10 different ROMS ready to be posted, when we get a green light
Slimkat would be a good rom.

I would vote for CM11 and Paranoid equally, but I voted for Paranoid in this case cuz I want those two to have even votes
Both roms are very super great (can I say that? :S). What is a clear win for CM11 to me is customization, and for Paranoid is DPI controls and ability to configure Phone/Phablet/Tablet mode which I think would be killer on our 5.5 inch screens.
Omni rom is great rom too, but I think that Paranoid and CM11 are best and should be priority numero uno

Both are very nice rom bases.
Some people like cm but some like aosp (pure nexus).
Stock rom is always boring and have no features.
Flash 2-3 roms and check their features...
Almost all roms are stable but difference is features...
I like Dirty Unicorn... It's aosp based with cyanogen theme engine + a hell lot of features...
Im using Pure Nexus at the moment, but i want to try something else.
Years ago i only used CM but with that whole new Microsoft, Cortana **** i dont know.
I like Pure Nexus (and AOSP in general) better because it's still stock Android with additional features. It is boring compared to CM and CM based ROMS but that is what also makes AOSP based ROMs less buggy. While CM goes in the opposite direction. If you want a ROM that you can customize down to the littlest detail, go with CM. Just be aware of the Bluetooth bug found in every CM based ROM.

Benzo Rom is really good, I been running it for about a month and it's stable as. As for Cortana its actually pretty good, I've been using 'her' a lot in the Xbox Preview Program and it's actually incredible, Xbox is actually the perfect platform for 'her'
I have used CM12/13 on my Nexus 5 since the last 2 years and have loved every minute of the Cyanogen experience.
Recently got the Nexus 6p. Unlocked and rooted it the same day. Used CM13 on it for a week and found that my phone was randomly restarting. Used Resurrection Remix since i was not satisfied with CM13. Loved the level of customization RR offers, but was still experience random reboots along with other bugs. Have been using Pure Nexus since 3 days now and am glad to note that the random reboot issue seems to have been resolved. Although PN does not offer the level of customization that comes with CM/RR ROMs, it does offer the overall stability and amazing battery life. Which for me is a priority.
It may just be me but, I can't use CM. Every time I install a CM based ROM on my phone I get noticeably worse signal. Instead of having 4G where I am, I will have 3G. The moment I switch back to an AOSP based ROM (DU, Pure Nexus) I go back to getting normal signal. I can't say its CMS fault because I never really read up on CM causing this issue for anyone else so its purely anecdotal.

CM is caf based where it gets updates from Qualcomm directly which is why your signal bars look lower. That is your actual signal unlike aosp ROMs which aren't accurate.
