I was running CyanogenMod 10.1 Loki'd and the clock widget locked up. I rebooted figuring that would fix it, but it it didn't. I decided to put the Slim Rom on it and went into TWRP. It locked up & I rebooted it and now I'm at the dreaded "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue." Kies says device not responding and won't connect. I then tried to reinstall the stock using Odin 3.07 and it errors out after it tries to write. The error says Complete (Write) Operation failed. All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1
Can someone please help? I've read & searched till I'm blue in the face.

It seems like my TWRP recovery is gone. It will only either go into Download mode or the triangle recovery failed mode. I haven't found anything I can do at this point.
Wipe data/Factory Reset in recovery mode (not in TWRP).
Then try ODIN again.

It won't go into recovery. This triangle recovery error screen seems to have taken over recovery. I've tried mucho times to get into recovery by holding power, volume up & home at the same time.
Maybe you can try Adam's Casual tool (in Development section) to see if it will work. It is supposed to "one click" CWM or TWRP onto your phone. If it works, you will have recovery to flash another ROM to get you back going. It might be worth a try anyway.
This is beyond my knowledge.
Since you did everything already (via KIES, ODIN and Recovery).
Sorry and hopefully someone can guide you to right direction.
Thank Scott. I'll give it a whirl.
That was a no go. It didn't see my phone just like Kies. I wonder why Odin has the error I put in my OP.
It sounds like you have a driver issue. Has your PC recognized your phone before this?
Also, see if you can get your hands on an earlier version of ODIN (1.87 Maybe or another) and give it a try. At this point I don't think you have much to lose.

Oh yes. It's never not connected. It's doing the same here on my laptop. The phone's drives don't even show in Explorer since this has happened.
The phone won't stay turned off in this state unless I take the battery out.
I'm calling it a night. Maybe the day crew can help me out on up this morning. I sure hope so.

Did you try to push the "volume up" key after the phone displayed the triangle? Once the phone shows the triangle and you have let go of all of the buttons, try to push the volume up button again and see if anything happens.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried the volume up & it did nothing after the triangle screen came and I released all three buttons. So I then tried the volume down button and still had no result.

ODIN will error everytime if you have the worthless keis installed, remove keis, load the newest samsung att g4 drivers , and it will NOT error again. I setup a workstation at the house JUST FOR THE PHONES a year ago, smooth ever since. lets see, $200 for a computer, $600 for a paper weight, best move I ever made. Nothing loaded on that puter but win 7 and samsung drivers, and any prog I need to do whatever, NEVER has odin errored on me...ever.

Well, might be that. But I have KIES on my everyday PC, I can restore using KIES or ODIN without problem :good:
I didn't install Kies till Odin was failing. I downloaded the Rom from Samfirms; I think its called.

Sounds like a boot loop, but I can't figure out why you would get one with the stock odin flash. Try doing a factory reset? it shouldn't be needed, but who knows?

In recovery.. there should be a factory reset option. I thought odin did that though.
when it is resetting I can read "mbr checksum error" or similar in yellow text before it's wiping data etc...
Try this ...turn you phone off but keep it plugged into you cpu usb cord and open oidin, next put your phone in download mode and put the needed files in oden and click start I had a hard time getting odin to work right for some reason this may not help but it worked for me. Good luck I don't think you bricked I think you can come out of this.
I assume that you used the partition in ROM Manager? If so I had the same problem as you. The phone would boot up to a black screen with only the buttons working. What I did was flash Eugenes 2.2 Froyo Rom, I surprised that it booted up and worked. After that I flashed back to stock rom and it work as it did before!

I turned the phone off while the usb was connected when the phone if off open odin ounce its open boot up the phone and boot it into download mode from there odin will connect and you can put the files you need into it and click start. This worked well for me when I needed to revert back to factory vibrant after flashing the "Real lag FIX" kernel that made my ear piece not work and some of my buttons not work but boy was my phone snappy and my benchmarks were awesome but what good does that do when your girl calls you and you cant hear her and all she can hear is you saying hellllllllooooooo .

here's what happened to me. i was flashing back to stock and was in download mode. the blue bar was moving etc and murphy and his dumb law decided to kill my my usb port... i thought the phone was DEAD! nothing i did woke the phone up. no battery indicator, buttons didn't do anything... it was all black. holding up/down and power didnt turn the phone on and into recovery or download mode... the phone was DEAD...
then after scouring the forum forever, i finally got the phone into download mode...
NOTE: i don't recall if the usb wire was plugged into the computer or not... i think it was though...
NOTE2: samsung drivers should have been installed already...
- remove the battery
- hold vol up and vol down buttons
- reinsert battery
i thought WOO HOO!! I GOT INTO DOWNLOAD MODE!!!
the next issue i had was getting odin to recognize the phone... it didn't detect what com port i had. but after a lot of reading, i finally got it to work...
- open odin first
- then get into download mode using the steps above...
after odin recognized the port the phone was plugged into, i flashed back to stock rom using the instructions given on this site... and my dead phone works again...
i was able to fix a dead phone!! this phone could be un-brickable!!
i hope this helps...

Open odin first, then plug in your phone.
I have a phone I am fixing for a friend, so I don't have a complete accurate history of what happened, so please bare with me.
Basically, you put the battery in and it boots right to download mode (Factory Mode), no power button required. I can then reboot it using the power, hold down the Vol-Down button and then I am prompted if I want to enter D/L mode, in which you can use Vol-Down to cancel and it boots like normal.
I have tried the following, nothing fixes it!
Factory Wipe
Root using CF-Auto Root
Every Key Combination Possible on Boot
Odin Stock Install
Kies Upgrade (just stalls on that)
It was not rooted when I got it, and now it is. I haven't installed any recovery yet, but am willing too. It has possible water damage, so it ain't going back to the store anytime soon. I can't even get USB Debugging to appear that it is connected, nor will ADB recognize it. But the USB is working and read/writing.
This isn't my first time working with this sort of stuff, I am just at my wits end, plus I'm a Sony/HTC/LG person, so if there is something I am missing with this wonderful(ly crappy) bootloader, let me know.
Thanks in advance!

If you can hold the vol-down and home button when you boot it up and get into Odin mode you should be about to flash the stock MD5 for your phone. Stock Canadian Odin files here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269304
Also make sure to use the lastest version of Odin, 3.07 I believe. After you are done flashing with Odin you will have to boot into Recovery (vol-up when booting) and do a factory reset. This has always fixed any boot problems with my phone.

So did you go into settings, more, developer mode to check usb/debug?
USB debugging isn't required to flash the Odin MD5. One thing I did notice is that you should boot into Odin download mode before connecting your USB cable. I was having issues with Odin not detecting my phone and waiting to connect the USB cable solved that.

I was referring going to adb fastboot
see the thing is that flashing did work fine, it just didn't fix the problem. I guess in Samsung terms I am stuck in Odin download mode when turning the phone on. This is why I wanted to see of I could push some standard reboot command via adb to see of it would "jig" it into place, but no matter what I try it always boots into download mode first.
and yes, I did turn on usb debugging

Nothing is wrong with the pins, USB is working fine and can be used in any other mode. I got ADB finally, I guess it was just not playing nice with me before. However, still anything I try the bloody thing still insists on booting first into download mode.
Just an update, it is still booting into download mode, tried a couple different stocks and still no good result. Anyone suggest any of the options in Odin might help work? Like F Reset Time or Phone EFS Clear?

I have seen this elsewhere, one guy suggested, using Keis, and it took him 2-3 times to get the stock to stick.
As far as checking those items in odin, could brick the phone. he also said, he got nowhere using odin in this situation.
Have you tried maybe flashing a recovery via odin? could be the recovery is corrupt.
what does this mean: in which you can use Vol-Down to cancel and it boots like normal. <<< Can you boot to the OS?
I can imagine your frustration here...good luck.
I did try Kies and it would keep getting stuck at 10% (I let it sit overnight) so I had no luck with that...

Yes, I have gone from stock recovery to CMW and back to Stock and still nothing. As for you other question, yes, I can boot into Android. The downside is I can't turn the phone off unless the battery is pulled out. This is why I bought an HTC One and not an S4 lol .. thank god this isn't my phone, but it is frustrating because of all the things I've tried to do to fix it.
Hello there,
I'm using a vodafone bloated version of the i9505 and wanted to flash CM or a clean stock 4.3 because I don't want to wait for vodafone to release updates.
I downloaded Odin and CWM for my device and followed the instructions correctly. All went as it should. But when I tried to boot into recovery, I got the boot logo and in the upper left corner it said in small blue text "booting recovery..." but it would just give me a black screen after a while and restart into normal mode. I tried flashing different versions of CWM via Odin. My next approach was to root the phone with cf auto root which succeeded. After that, I tried all of the above again, and still didnt get any results. I even tried the Cyanogenmod desktop intsaller and after a while it said: "cant communicate with your phone"
Please help!
I believe I had the same issue once. When you flash the recovery true Odin, make sure Auto Reboot is not selected in Odin. That fixed it for me. After the flashing is done, you need to remove the battery and insert it again. Then it should probably work.

I tried what you suggested, and hat the same thing as before but after the second restart I kept holding the volume up key as someone suggested on the internet and got a CM boot screen with on screen buttons like in CWM. after a brief pause I got a violet screen with nothing on it. I am now very confused and have no idea how to fix this. The phone itself can be booted normally though.
It seems to be that something remained from the failed CM installation.
Any suggestions?

Hello again, I flashed TWRP and it worked! I had to hold the volume up button even after the logo with the small blue print showed up in order to boot into recovery. Still couldnt get it to boot into CWM though. But thank God there is no need for that anymore!
My brother has a rooted Sprint GS4 and he says he clicked to install a Samsung update that was pushed through his phone (probably 4.3). The phone cannot boot into recovery. Trying to get into recovery leads to a screen saying the update is installing and it always fails and restarts the phone. The phone cannot boot and freezes on the Sprint screen.
*EDIT: Now the phone won't even get past the black galaxy s4 screen!!
How I've been troubleshooting:
The battery was taken out for over 6 hours and same thing.
I tried to use ODIN to flash 4.2, ODIN stops on a write error
(following the QB King video)
Should I try to find 4.3 and attempt to flash? Is there anything else I could do? Thanks!!
If the phone was already 4.3, you have to use Odin to flash MK2. Anything older than that will not work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601443
If the update to 4.4.2 (NAE) failed, you may have to use one of the 4.4.2 ROMs to get the phone to boot until the official 4.4.2.tar comes out. Try MK2 first though.

There is a MJA full tar available from rwilco12's repository. First charge the phone for a couple hours. Then put into download mode - volume down+ power, then volume up to confirm. Run Odin as administrator, put the tar.md5 file in the pda shot, connect the phone and flash with Odin 3.07 or 3.09.
First boot may take five earth minutes or more.
If it gets stuck on yellow screen for more that ten minutes, boot into stock recovery and factory reset. Should be good to go.

That is a big thing, it really helps the community.
Since the phone will be on the full stock it will probably get the OTA update notification.
Might want to hold off on that for a bit.
To turn off the notification for these in the future:
1. from the homescreen click menu.
2. click settings.
3. click more
4. click application manager.
5. scroll over to all
6. find google services framework.
7. uncheck "show notifications"
the short cut?
1. pull down the notification bar
2. long press on the system update notification
3. press app info
4. uncheck "show notifications"
Have fun and good luck with your new phone.
Spend some time reading, searching and reading and you all will sure enjoy this device.
Good luck.
Hi. Browsed for ages and always come here for answers.
Here's my problem.
2x S8s. SM-950f.
Updated to most recent software through software update. Both phones were glitchy and crashing and just generally irritating after.
Factory data reset etc. This did not resolve the problems, also led to one of them having issues with FRP (annoying)
Used Odin to try and flash the latest firmware (from sammobile, UK BTU) after flashing both, they reset and powered on. Got stuck at the S8 screen.
Restarted then both were at the "an error occurred during update" screen.
Managed to get back to download screen. Re checked the software and model numbers, even that the bootloader was the correct version etc. All was fine.
Connected to Odin, shows that it is connected, but nothing happens when clicking start.
Now after attempting that, both phones will not power on.
(One will when placed on the wireless charger, but just sticks at S8 screen) and download mode or reset screen can not be accessed. So, not exactly happy. And totally out of ideas
Any suggestions, beyond taking it to a shop to see if anyone can help.
yes .....dont tuch the phones for 24 hours let the battery die ...it will...connect to pc and then try download mode....u may need to press combination for like 1 minute to get to download mode....flash twrp reboot directly into it when odin says successfully .....wipe system data ....dont turn on phone download any custom rom flash and enjoy.....it will trip knox but worth than getting a new board....
Okay, will give that a try.

Just said, wait until your device powers off due battery insufficience. Plug cable and hold at the same moment vol(down)+bixby+power. Then press vol(up) at the warning screen to proceed to odin mode. Let it charging a while like 1 h. Then unplug it and plug it to your pc. In Odin select ap the previous downloaded file. Take your mobile in your hand. With one hand, prepare your fingers to vol(up)+bixby and with the other hand start the flashibg process. Be careful, and take your hand directly from the mouse if you clicked start in odin, and position your one finger to power button, but dont click. If odin start pass, press immidiately the buttons (vol(up)+bixby+power) and let it to start into recovery. If you arrived to recovery, reply to us if not search for help!!!
Good luck

1. Trying to flash twrp is kinda of useless if you can't get into your system need oem unlock for that.
2. Have you tried taking out Sim card and SD card and reboot.
3. If you can at least boot try smart switch as it has a emergency recovery option.
