Trouble with downloads - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

MY wife and I received 2 new galaxy S4 non rooted right now. Both phones can download torrents but when I try and start the torrent on either phone using utorrent. It looks like its opens flashes saying adding url but when I check the app nothing is started. Same on computer as well. And a similar problem trying to download anything from my rss reader on both phones as well. I press the download button but nothing i downloading on my phone. It doesn't even try and start. I checked over the setting multiple times but I'm stumped.

Have you tried downloading the torrents by PC? You'll need to do this anyway for rooting and such. Don't do this by phone. You need a PC to install the Samsung drivers and use adb to push the root exploit via the run.bat file.

No that shouldn't be necessary. I gave my brother my Skyrocket and its working out for him just fine.

HTC Sync 2.0.31

If (for any reason) you lost the install on your SD card that came with the Evo, I have created a torrent for this.
If you've never used a torrent before, just go and download uTorrent to open the file.
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5609530/HTC_Sync_2.0.31_(Evo_4G)
You may ask "Why use a Torrent?", well it doesn't bog down the xda servers and can offer very fast download speeds when used en-masse.
Enjoy!
Why not just go to the source and get the latest version (which is 2.0.35 by the way):

some people, apparently, can't access it. maybe they're out of country or something. i posted the same link in a thread yesterday, and someone couldn't get it.
I can't get it. it takes me to a screen where it wants you to select your phone, and the EVO is not listed.
v2.0.33 is available further down, but will not install on my Win 7x64 system.
Sorry, it installs, but won't run; some .dll missing, I uninstalled it. I reinstalled as admin, and same thing, uninstalled again.
Can anyone post up the v.35 file somewhere?
thanks
They don't make a mac version, do they?

I had the same thing happen to me (some log.something was missing) with the shiopped version (2.0.31). I just ran the installer again and ran the app after connecting the phone and it worked.
Edit: and yes, you have to disable virus protection (and a reboot after install couldn't hurt either).

[Q] can some one clarify...

This is my first android phone im trying to figure out how to install apks onto my phone i read some threads and looked on youtube but still no cigar what programs do i need installed on my phone or computer, right now i have eoe app installer and i thought i put a apk file on my phone but its saying nothing found if some one could quickly break down the process for me or point me to the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.... once again this is my first android phone im a iphone convert(i see the light) so i gotta learn how to think again
There are a few ways of doing this. I like to use tAttachApkInstaller from the Android Market. Install that, than just email yourself via gmail the apk file. Once you recieve the email you'll see an option on what to use to download the APK. Use the app I just told you about, and you're good.
what your looking for is "sideloading".
there should be a couple stickys describing how to enable sideloading.
Just download a file manager.
Have Root (if not, you should), then get Root Explorer.
Do not have Root (again, you should), then get Astro
I just drag the apk file to the sd card and then disconnect the phone from the computer and look for the apk with the file explorer that the phone brings and just click it... done!
^ if you use Awesome Drop you wont need to use a cable.... I usually just download apps straight to the phone using the browser.
Thanks for the feedback it's seems like there are a few different ways to skin a cat I'm try some of the suggestions

[Q] How to install 3rd party apps on AT&T Galaxy Tab?

I just bought my AT&T Galaxy Tab and like it, but I can't figure out how to install any apps that didn't come from the Android Market. Can anybody help me out with this? My goal is to use my jailbroken iPhone 4 as a modem for the tab instead of buying another data plan.
I'm totally new to Android and know nothing about programming. So, if someone could walk me through this process step-by-step, I would be very greatful! Thanks!
This is my first attempt at an answer, so here goes -
The first step is to ensure that applications from unknown sources are allowed. Go to Settings (Menu key from Home screen) and then select 'Applications' and ensure that the 'Allow install of non-Market applications' is ticked.
From there it should just be a matter of downloading an app you have found (on a reputable website) via your browser.
Find the file, usually in the 'download' or 'downloads' directory using the stock 'My files' (or any other file manager you may have installed from the market).
Select the file and you should be able to install it from the menu that pops up.
Hope this helps
Att tabs don't have the above option avail. You'll have to root your device, there is a sticky thread in the tab dev section that will give you all the steps. You just download a special program on your pc, connect and press a single button. Takes about 5 min, after rooted there is an option to allow 3rd party apps within the same pc program. Once you've downloaded the program it'll make more sense.
If the app doesn't require the tab to be rooted then you could just either get the apk to the tab by emailing it to yourself or whatever method or install Android-sdk and use "adb install packagename.apk".
As for using iPhone as modem, searc for "wpa_supplicant" in General forum, you will see tons of answers. I dunno if it will work w iPhone but I use the tab with Nokia and it works.
Another question
Okay. I'm still kind of new to the forums as well. Can you tell me where the "sticky tab" thing is? Sorry to be such a pain, but I'm still trying to figure this stuff out. I think I'll be able to figure a lot of it out once I can get it to let me install the 3rd party apps.
Wonder why AT&T blocked that option? I thought that was the whole point of Android- to allow everyone to modify it as they wished? I'm sure it's so you'll have to buy a data package from them. As bad as I hate to say it, it was a LOT easier to jailbrake my phone than it is my Tab.

Install the app on your pc. First use option 1 and Root your Tab. Second choose option 4 (Allow Non Market Apps) and your done. You can test it by either trying to install an app from a link off a website (such as here) or directly from your SD card. Both will now work just fine. I also am running an AT&T Tab and this worked fine for me.
You can just put your iphone sim card in your tab and get 3g data. If you want voice capability too, you will have to flash a rom that has a phone dialer. Roto JME thread is a good place to start learning this business.

I tried rooting it this way, but it won't work. SuperOneClick gets to a point and says "waiting for device" and it just sits there. I've tried having the Tab in USB Debugging mode and out of that mode, but it makes no difference. At this point, I'm about willing to let you remote in to my laptop via TeamViewer and see if you can make it work. lol I'll keep digging through here and see what I can come up with.
How long did you wait while it said "waiting for device"

If you have not installed the usb driver for the tab using either android-sdk included driver or installing Skies, I don't think SuperOneClick will detect the tab.
You could try the Sideload Wonder Machine.

Quattr0 is correct. The issue is not with the app but with the drivers. You need to install the usb drivers to allow for a successful connection.

That may be the problem. My PC doesn't seem to recognize my Tab, no matter if I try it in Windows or Ubuntu. Where do I get the drivers or Skies software? I've tried to find it in numerous places, but I'm not finding any for the AT&T Tab.
Also tried taking the SIM card out of my Mercury USB modem and installing in the Tab so I;d have totally unlimited data, but it wouldn't work. Haven't tried the one out of my iPhone 4 yet.
There's a link for the drivers on the superoneclick post, if you don't see it just goto the samsung site

Sideloading Wonder Machine taken Down

It would appear that even on the website (which shows At&T blocked apps) that the sideloading wonder machine is gone.
Dang! wish I had got the sideloading machine.
isnt it still available at android central? Those are the guys who wrote it, I thought...
if at was at androidcentral then you would have to sideload it, completely defeating the purpose.
Why don't you just put the .apk on your phone and install it?

that's sideloading. Anything other than a direct market download is sideloading, and blocked by At&T

Yea...that's what I'm saying. Enable side loading it takes like 30 seconds. It's more of a hassle to use wonder machine.

lol....The Side load wondermachine stays on your computer. You download an .APK file oyu want, plug the phone in and it will side load it to your phone for you. You do not place the APK on the phone at all.
There is also a video on how to use the program:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzs_1DeSgWI&feature=player_embedded
Quote from the website:
"Installation:
Unzip the SWM folder to a conveinent place on your Windows computer. The program, and all files inside the SWM folder need to stay together.
You will need to install the USB driver for your model of Android device. Information about this can be had from your carrier, or from your device manufacturer.
Usage:
Ensure that USB debugging is enabled on your Android device. For most devices, this can be found in menu>settings>applications>development
Plug your Android device into a high speed USB port on your computer.
Start the application, and browse to the apk file you would like to install by clicking the "Choose a file" button.
Once you have chosen the apk to install, the "Go" button will be enabled. Click it, and you'll see the command window which prompts you as it installs the file. "

Root the phone. It's completely safe. If you follow DG's instructions on the thread it's pretty much idiot proof too. And then sideloading will be enabled!
edit: a bunch of other things will be enabled too. and he also has an unroot script there for you.
Yeah, I don't really get this. Download SuperOneClick. You can root your phone and enable sideloading all at once. If you ever want to go back SuperOneClick will also unroot your phone as well. There's no danger doing it this way.
SuperOneClick isn't the best way to root and enable your phone. There is an issue with Busybox. Designergears recommends using aroot to root and enable sideloading. If you used SuperOneClick to root...simply unroot it.
I'm afraid I don't know enough about software to use superoneclick and such.

Hey, i think the best way for you is to do it like it says in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=981866
except if you have a bell atrix, i think than youll have to wait a bit so the devs make it for it (im not sure if its a problem tho)
use aroot. I rooted with super one click and also clicked enable outside apps but it didn't work. I then used aroot and everything worked fine.

You didnt try the Sideload wonder machine? Check out all the links and instructions I posted. It is really easy, especailly if you dont trust yourself enough to root the phone.

Seriously, he posts that the SWM is down but I don't think he even knows what the SWM is.
And for everyone telling him to root, transferring files with SWM is so much easier that rooting just for side loading is kind of a waste.
You can also sideload via adb without root.
I've used wonder machine and worked beautifully.
you can always use Droidexplorer or adb
and if you can navigate this website and consciously comprehend what is being discussed (aka process the text on the screen in your mind) you should be able to follow DGs root method

[Q] Help with Root

So I'm stuck at the command prompts. I have messed around with several things, and have also updated the usb driver correctly. Where I am stuck at is getting the adb usb.ini file to show up. I can run C: START adb update usb, and something runs for a split second, but after that I'm still unable to get the ini file to show up. Is there something wrong I'm doing?
just follow this tutorial, its noob proof. I hope this helps........
http://rootkindlefire.com/kindle-fire-root/how-to-root-kindle-fire/
its easier then the tut here
Well I've tried both tutorials but for some reason I must be doing something wrong, because I'm unable to get the usb driver.ini file to show up, so that it can be copied and pasted to the .android folder. I was advised that I had to do the adb update usb command in cmd, so i tried START adb update usb but all it does is run something for a split second then nothing shows up. I'm in the correct directory as far as I know, and I tried different directories for about 3 hours last night. I was able to successfully update the usb drivers through device manager, not sure if I was supposed to run the adb usb update before actually updating through device manager?
Then you didn't follow the instructions because the file would automatically be there if you did.
Movieaddict, you are a godsend. I did attempt to do this by watching the Youtube vid, but the link you sent me actually just showed pictures of what to do. It worked! Now I just have to figure out what to do now that it's rooted lol. Thanks so much!

Soooo...I'm back again. Finished the root process, everything went hunky-dory until I actually tried to install something from the Android Market. Now everything force closes from Android Market, though my Amazon market still works. Also my games are force closing as well. The only way I can actually get back into the Market is if I clear all data to it, then can do searches. Also with my games, I am completely unable to get to work even after reinstalling them. Any ideas?
