[Q] Help me pick a ROM - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I just got my Nexus 4, and before I start playing with it, I'd like to go ahead and ROM it.
I want really good battery life, and lots of customization options for the UI.
I don't know a TON about ROMs aside from how to install them etc. I've done that a bit with several phones.
My big question is nightlies. I REALLY don't want to have to reinstall a new ROM every day, or even every week... I want one that I can install, and use for a long time that updates itself (like the stock ROM does with Google). My understanding of nightlies might be completely wrong, but it sounds like I have to reinstall the ROM every day?
What are your thoughts/opinions? I'm leaning toward CM10.1, but like I said, I don't want to have to reinstall every day. Does it auto update these "nightlies"?

If a nightly rom is fine you don't have to update it if you don't want to.

Will it auto-update? If not, when I update it, is it a full re-install basically? Will that clear all my apps and settings etc?

I think I'm going with the PA, if I can find a working download link... : \

It wont auto-update. You have to flash it. And when new nightlies come out, there usually arent huge changes to the rom.
You can dirty flash the rom and all apps and settings should remain, however thats not the best way to install a rom for stabilty. Its recommended that you do a full wipe.
On a side note, if your looking for lots of customization options i wouldnt go with cm10.1. Try roms based on AOKP like carbon, liquid smooth, etc.
They have tons of settings to play around with which cyanogenmod lacks.

So every night, when a new update comes out, I would have to re-install all my apps, re-config my Google/yahoo accounts etc, and re-setup the phone settings etc? That seems like a major pain in the ass... I'm presently downloading 2 Paranoid ROMs:
PA_MAKO_3.15-26APR2013

Those were the newest 2 I could find... : \

Well, most people that flash nightlies consistantly dirty flash the rom so that their stuff isnt wiped.
I honestly dont see the point of flashing nightlies every single time they come out.
If your going to go with paranoid android try one of their alphas, which come with halo.
You can get their latest builds here: http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/mako/alpha

When a new nightly comes out and you was it, just flash the new update rom on top of the old one. Don't worry about installing your apps again. As long as you don't do a factory reset your apps should be on your device.
The latest PA rom is May 26 in the alpha folder of goo.im.

Indeed, I cancelled the other downloads, and grabbed the May 26th one.
If I flash it on top of the other ROM, will my google account still be sync'd with the phone? That's how I update my contacts etc. Also text messages will stay? Settings will stay the same? Ringtones? All of it?

If you are coming from a different ROM you should probably do a full wipe.
Dirty flashing may cause bugs. But if you are upgrading the same ROM dirty flashing will allow you to keep everything.

What exactly is dirty flashing? I'm guessing flashing over the top of another ROM without doing a factory reset?

Yah dirty flashing is installing a ROM without fully wiping the previous one.
A lot of people seem to be complaining about goo.im download speeds. There's a couple mirrors on their g+ if its unbearably slow.

Yes, everything will still be there as long as you don't initialize a factory reset.

Sweet. Including widget placement and alarm clocks etc etc?
That makes this ROMing thing a deal better to me. I was worried that i'd have to set everything back up every time, and that was a major turn off.
Thank you all so much for the very helpful input.

[INFO] [i9020] CyanogenMod 7 Nightly

Now that the Nightly Builds are back, figured their should be one thread were all of that is maintained.
First things, first. I take Zero, Nada, Zilch credit for any of these builds. For that we all have Cyanogen and TeamDouche to thank. This thread is merely a place to discuss all things nightly and link to download the Nightly Roms.
This Rom does not include the Google Apps and those you have to flash separately.
As always, Nandroid before installing.
Nightly Builds can be found here:http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=crespo
Google Apps here:http://goo-inside.me/gapps/
Status of latest nightly build: http://buildbot.teamdouche.net/builders/cm_crespo_full
Changelog for Nightlies: http://cm-nightlies.appspot.com/?device=crespo
UPDATE: A kang is an unofficial nightly that someone with a spare computer builds from CM's github. It is NOT AN OFFICIAL NIGHTLY AND ONLY THOSE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING SHOULD FLASH THEM.

if it works on Android 2.3.1 then it'll work on CM7.
Edit: Installed it and it doesn't appear on apps menu. Market comments also says the same.
Hooray beer!
No wipe needed coming from crackflashers, but I guess that makes sense since they are really the same thing (same should apply to Alpha2/3 from koush).
Itried installing Car Home, it seemed to install OK but it didn't show up in the app drawer. I uninstalled and tried again with the same result.
hey
is there somewhere a list waht is includet or not?

As the OP seem busy, I will add the known bugs and what is still missing
Missing from usual CM features:
* Numeric battery indicator
* Status Bar customisation (colors)
Bugs:
* Some issues with GMail (fix permission or uninstall/reinstall seem to fix)
* Phone reboot during phone call (Known Gingerbread bug)
* Torch is not working.
* Some people report random reboots (Never had one, seem very unusual)

1) Copy zips to sd card
2) Backup with ti backup
3) Flash latest clockwork recovery through rom manager
4) Reboot into clockwork recover and run backup from clockwork recovery (aka nandroid)
5) mount usb storage in clockwork recovery and copy ti backups and clockwork recovery backup to your computer. Also copy any other important files on the sdcard (Especially pictures in the DCIM folder).
6) Copy nightly and gapps zips file to phone's sdcard
7) Wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache (under advanced), wipe battery stats
8) Install zips from sd card in this order:
a) CM_Speedyxxx.zip
b) googleapps 828-signed.zip
c) newtalk.zip
9) Reboot phone and wait 10 minutes phone should be in cm7 and working.
10) verify you can open market.
11) If you have problems try starting back at step 7 in clockwork and wipe data/factory reset

These builds may be marked as Rc1 and stable but they are way old and NOT stable.
Before you ask, as of right now the nightlies are the most stable version of CM7 being release right now.
bump.
Please sticky this.
I agree with these not being stable, and the nightlies are far more stable. But you might want to revise the bootlooping on RC1 statement. It can be stopped from bootlooping by flash it, full wipe while its flashed, flashing gaps, and then it will work fine. I haven't tried another kernel after doing that though.

Eh, I use mikshift anyway, but when It came out, it was the only rom I had on my sd card, and I needed to make a phone call, so I was forced to make it work. That method saved my life, or at least made it so I could get a ride home, other than that, I wouldn't use it.
In fact, the only reason I would consider the "stables" would be so that I can not have to pay so that I can get updates (with the only paid roms for the shift being the nightlies, I think there is no reason to buy full rom manager)
You don't have to pay for the nightlies, don't know if you are aware of the mirror for the nightlies, but no pay there. Only have to pay if you want to download thru rom manager. Just thought i'd point thay out

Yes, I'd still rather flash a nightly.
I'm 100% sure 7.1.0 Oct 9 2011 has bugs. Maybe not the bootloop 7.1 RC1 had but nightlies usually have newer features and more bugfixes than any milestone release.

If you haven't flashed it then you should avoid advising others not to flash it. And I have had that weird KB issue before but not in the last month or more, so I wouldn't assume a bug that you once had is still present in a ROM that you haven't flashed yet. And if it's no different than a nightly build, what's the point of telling people not to flash it but to instead flash a nightly? People should flash CM7.1 if they want to have official support. Bug reports on nightlies are laughed at.
Again, this PSA is outdated and unneeded now.

Works for me
The only bugs that I've noticed are with Music Folder Player Free and a one time bug with the camera.
Music Folder Player Free - With the screen on songs play fine until I go to scroll through a folder/list of songs or if the screen is rotated. It starts to stutter and skip while I'm interacting within the program. With the screen off music will randomly stutter and skip and get worse as the song plays. Stock Android music player doesn't have this issue.
Camera - I tried to take a picture today and my phone seemed to lockup; none of the capacitive buttons would work and a menu pop-up didn't go away. When I pulled my phone back out of my pocket the screen was completely garbled and grainy. Had to pull the battery, but afterward everything was fine again.

Nexus 7 PA 2.12 Wifi issues..

Posting here as I'm a noob, and consequently can't post to the P.A page directly.
Since this 2.12 update i've been having wifi issues, like from where i am positioned normally I get 1 bar, but its a steady one bar, now i'm often finding i have no internet connection in the same places as i would before.
I did do a dirty flash, so that is most probably where all my problems are arising from, but i'm still really new to this, and any step i take, i worry and fret over.
had some tablet ui bugs after running games, along with all applications running twice when i open recent apps. I don't know where why or when this recent apps double bug occurs, but i've come across it a few times. I believe the tablet ui bug may be related to when i set bobclock (widget) to force, adjusted the size on restart, but then would encounter the icons dropped off bottom of screen, and everything just out of place, like its reverted to old ui.
oh another issue, which has been mentioned many times before, is inability to use google play store, i've fiddled with all the different dpi settings and size, nothing seems to work.
a clean wipe would include
backing up apps/data/p.a sys pref(?)
wiping
cleaning cache's
flashing the same 2.12 p.a zip i dirty flashed before
caches again? or gapps
any dumbing down would be greatly appreciated

Wouldn't Kernel be more specifically tied to WiFi issues? I don't know what PA does to the kernel they include, but if your up to it, you could try another kernel, like franco.Kernel
Oh. Yes. i've been on that page and have trolled through a few hundred pages.
I think I just need to become a bit more familiar with everything in regards to roms flashing and such, its not difficult but i fear i'm sure to do something in the wrong order,
yes i've read guides before you point me there.
gosh this 5 min wait timer for new people is getting on my nerves i didn't think i'd be wanting to reply so fast, but when you guys are on it like this, i can't turn down that kinda service!
another question while i wait for my timer to finish.
initially i flashed pa. 2.11 then gapps along with doing cache business.
since then i flashed 2.12, but not gapps, and consequently having issues with play store (cant open)
can i just go to flashing 2.13 when it finishes downloading and then flash gapps after?
is the latest gapps jb-20120726-signed?

a kernel is one of these things i have no clue about.
i had a mac many years ago, and that got a kernel error, so my knowledge is limited to that its something root related, or there abouts anyway xd
How does one go about implementing one of these kernel do-hickeys?
on a side note, my wireless icon used to show grey and blue.
blue meant connected, grey, i'm not sure.. sometimes worked sometimes didn't
ever since going to 2.12 i've had nothing but grey, seem to have connection as i am downloading from goo, but as mentioned in initial post, connection is definately worse than it was before hand.. any ideas?

Sorry I took a while, I was in class. First, you always have to reflash gapps when you flash an update or a new ROM.
When you change to a different ROM (i.e. from Slim Bean to Paranoid) it's recommended to do a full wipe/factory reset before flashing the new ROM.
So the procedure for new ROMs is this. Factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, flash ROM, flash gapps, reboot.
The procedure for a ROM update is the same, you just omit the factory reset.
The latest gapps is gapps jb-20120810. You can download it in Goo manager.

How does one go about implementing one of these kernel do-hickeys?

A kernel is what governs your CPU clock speeds and voltage levels, as well as some other things. To flash a kernel, you don't have to wipe anything, just flash the zip file. Whenever you flash a new ROM, it changes your kernel to whatever is stock for that ROM. So if you use a custom kernel, you will have to reflash it.

p.a 2.13
might anyone have any idea why after;
wiping both cashes and installing p.a 2.13 then gapps
my youtube comes up with an error from the beginning, unable to start, same goes for if you click it in the app drawer.
i fiddled about with dpi size force and such, but to no avail.
some settings transferred but not all, like the ui, after switching ui back to what i wanted, tab small/mid
i started to recieve trebuchet has stopped working, this keeps popping up but you can just leave it in the back ground and work around it..
wish i could post this in the correct thread..
ah well.
thinking of just re-flashing them both, will do whatever i did this previous time, see if the error returns.
edit: just finished the reflashing of both, no trebuchet error as expected, the youtube one is back, same as the previous flash.
i really don't think i've done anything wrong, but i haven't seen anyone else reporting this error..
edit edit: simple uninstall and reinstall for youtube and problem solved.
hope its an issue localised to me.

Yeah I would reflash. It could also be a corrupted download, try re-downloading paranoid android 2.13 and then flashing the newer zip to see if that fixes it.

Was this rom built using the paranoid android port guide?
......
Definitely a HUGE thanks to Socim!! The Paranoid rom is working really well on my phone. Only 1 reboot during initial setup with an up time of 45h. Very stable.
Thread needs to be retitled look at cm9 or Cm10 thread title for format. If not following proper thread title etiquette for custom roms we may get locked by mod.
Screenshots are a big + for rom thread, list of features.
List of working and non working elements of the rom with current release. Ensure this remains updated with each build.
Thanks

I have just transferred my data to new hard disk and it cost me two days.
Hopefully new build will be uploaded later today. With new kernel config it should be highly stable, many thanks to dr4stic. My phone haven't met any reboot for 52hrs.

Thanks for the updated ROM Socim. Just downloading and flashing now.
Quick Q - has anyone tried the Gapps version 20121011? Goo Manager informed me an update was available and I have downloaded it, but haven't flashed it yet.

I am still having some random reboot when I try to light up the screen from idle. But otherwise everything work fine and fast. ROM look amazing
Everything was great for me too... No reboots for 2 days, but what I did experience is lockups and slowdowns. I tried modifying cpu thresholds to no avail. Also had camera probs.
Really cool rom, I hope it gets support in the future to make totally stable... For now, had to revert back to 0829 cm9...stable stable land! Haha
Cheers

Weird, I've never encountered that issue. I assume you did a complete clean install of the Paranoid rom? Maybe get cat log running and log the event if it happens, I hear that helps devs track down the issue. Are any specific apps running when these reboots occur?
been running this ROM for around 24 hours noticed around 4 or 5 random resets and am still having the issue with instagram and youtube controls being put in the background. Otherwise the build is quite reliable and very snappy, Thanks for the effort!
The reboot for me only occurs during screen unlock. I have remove the patern unclock and since then did not see any reboot. Will let you know tomorrow the result
Update: I got another reboot this morning without any lock active. Will try another fresh install to see

Customise navigatiob bar w/o Custom ROM ?

Hi,
Is it possible to customise the navigation bar (get PIE controls, reduce the size) without changing ROM ?
Thanks.
why'd you wanna do that. you would need to take inferior stuff and dork around with hacks and exploits. if you go that route dont pride yourself running stock afterwards, it'll be a patchy mess, far away from a polished experience.
to some extend i can appreciate whats possible with hacks - but i wouldnt be able to cope with the patchyness of it.
but yeah, the pie thing is lmt. and the navbar thing is a mod you find on xda - you get to choose fixed sizes that you can flash. both is stone age compared to what you could do with integrated solutions.

I'm on stock rom, but rooted. I use HideBar: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=be.ppareit.hidebar . Works well on the phones with a navigation bar, but was originally written for tablets. The developer has recently received a Nexus 4, so we can expect some love for our phones.
Thanks for your replies, I guess I will have to install PA, I didn't want to install a custom ROM because flashing Gaaos with recovery after each PA update is very anoying (is it the same with CM ?), and also Stock version et the updates first !
How long it takes for PA and CM to add the stock updates to their ROMs please ?

It's strange because with my Motorola Defy, when I installed a new update of CM10, I never had to reinstall Gaaps, only the first time...
Reinstalling Gaaps after each updates of PA or CM is only because of the Nexus 4 ?
I think you get something wrong there. "Reinstalling" means literally one more tap in twrp or cwm. You dont have to set them up again, you just do that tap and its done. It has gapp backup, so not even that tap is needed, but not sure if its unlocked already.
